  • This week, Jack and Edwin make another questionable cheap car purchase, an unreliable classic V8 P38 Range Rover. They'll take it out on the road, see what it's like off-road on some of the UK's finest green lanes before taking it to a Land Rover specialist to find out everything wrong with our cheap 4x4...

'Tatey one chief financial officer' aka T81 CFO number plate came with the rangy when I bought her in March 2019. She needs a completely new wiring loom to fix the intermittent electrical issues, someone before me had hacked the existing one to death. If you buy an old P38 take out the body control unit (BCU) and open it up. Check that the printed circuit boards are not coming loose, that is what kills the BCUs. She still needs front axle oil seals, shocks and bushings but then should be pretty well complete. Paint needs doing properly too. I bought it for when I regularly visited the UK to see my old mum. It was intended too as a project car. Renting a car for several weeks is expensive, and you end up in tiny uncomfortable stick shifts and I prefer automatics. The plan was to do the work myself, which I started by replacing all of the cooling system, changing the auto transmission oil and filter and a general engine service. That heater return pipe that you found, is metal and I hadn't noticed it was weeping. The front hubs, CV joints, rotors / discs, suspension air bags, air compressor, air conditioning condenser and filter are all fairly new. Kyle fitted them because I couldn't get into the UK with the travel restrictions. It also had a complete new exhaust system, pity some low life loser had to steal part of it.
Travel restrictions stopped me travelling to the UK until February 2022. As things happened, I used Tatey One for a few weeks until Mum passed shortly after in April. 2022. I then no longer needed the car and passed it to Kyle. Even with the cost, had Covid not hit, then it would have been cheaper and better than renting. If you fix the remaining issues, I think you will have a great vehicle.
I am delighted to see her getting a new lease of life and probably being cared for properly. Living outside the UK it would cost me way more to visit and sell the car than to basically give it away. Enjoy it.

I bought my £800 p38 2.5 diesel manual about 6 years ago. It costs about a grand a year to maintain. It's easy enough to work on. Just replaced all the air bags and EAS pump myself. 28mpg if you're sensible.
The engine disabled is the battery in the key not making contact. Happens on mine and you just have to wiggle the battery cover on the key and try again!
The remote on the key has the same frequency as WiFi so it can drain the car battery depending on where you park as it keeps the car awake.
For the eas if it ever starts locking out definitely get an easkicker which resets it without a laptop. Also if it doesn't go up leave the door open and car running so it can get the air tank up to pressure before trying to go up.

Love the P38, I’ve had mine for 11 years now and I’ve always done preventive maintenance on it so it’s been perfectly reliable. The beauty of owning an old Land Rover is that you know what’s next to go wrong because all the faults are commonly known so you can prevent it before it happens, simple. I certainly won’t be parting with mine.

I bought a 1 owner 2000 4.6hse p38 here in the US for $2400. I’ve had it for a year, and so far the only stuff that has gone wrong are wheel speed sensors, cruise control, wiper motors, window motors, gauge cluster, sat nav screen, AC controls, every bulb, and it leaks from the radiator, front main, rear main, oil pan and valve cover gaskets. So it’s going great!Might trade up to an L322👍

Mine only needs a head gasket, a transmission, the air suspension rebuilt (it works, but I think it needs new bags, and a valve block rebuild). The ac display is disappearing, the radio needs the code (the code I have no longer works). I think that will fix the problems…. 😂
It’s a 1996 SSE modified by Cameron concepts. It’s supercharged so it’s not slow (it’s not fast, but it was in 1996!). Probably one of the first ones they did. One of my favorite vehicles.

Comments like this are EXACTLY what I was hoping these guys would achieve with this video, I knew she'd be going green laning (and considering what a stroppy old bag she'd been the last 6 months I figured she might not make it unscathed) but I hoped so much that whatever the outcome, it might encourage people to save a couple.
I loved this thing til I had to use it daily, neither myself or the rangy were ready for that situation and I don't blame the car at all, I did my best considering how rapidly the faults escalated and if nothing else I got her to the next relay point in her race so she had a chance! 😂
Very best of luck with yours, I hope you get it sorted and can enjoy what these wonderful, wafty, satisfying barges can offer once again 🤙

If you guys fancy doing a 90's 4X4 UK vs US any time I've got a small RUclips Chanel and a 1997 4.0 v6 Ford Explorer, arguably Americas answer to the Range Rover and I believe there's only about 200 of them left in the UK. I think it would make a pretty cool comparison video if you'd be interested!

sure, if you're in the UK, you won't say Land Rover anymore, but Land Roveh!

LOVE the P38! Had one back in 2010 for a couple of years. Used to go wrong just sitting outside my house.
Have an L322 now which is the same age as the P38 was and that gives much less trouble.
Gotta say - the Bordeaux gives me tingles in my special place 🥰😍

I bought a 99 Range Rover HSE 4.6 for $500USD, someone had stolen the Cats out of it, got a replacement for $400USD with all four O2 sensors, passed the American version of MOT, drove it for a year (loved it) then sold it for $2,000USD. It's still on the road 3 years later!

Any 400£ car is worthy of all sorts of janky fixes to keep it on the road, it just has to run and drive, needs headlights and working windscreenwipers, all the other stuff is unimportant, and is just a bonus 😄 ..and when its MOT time, well, just do the cheapest possible fixes 😂 ..and when all those janky fixes get out of hand then its time to say goodbye, and make at least 100£ profit on it 😂

Quick question to alleviate my ignorance, when Andy said the bolts on the exhaust system decide the labour charges, if they won't loosen can you not just gas axe them off? If they're some sort of stud it makes sense or maybe they can't use oxy cutters in their location?

When u lock the car don’t turn the key twice that should eliminate the key code lockout.
Iv had my p38 for over 4 years not and it’s always started and got me home. Even when it’s been damaged off road. Mines especially more unreliable as it’s got a supercharger bolted to the side of it lol. And a decent exhaust on the v8 you will never have the window up lol.

I've had my P38 for 12 years, in that time I've spent less on it than they've spent on this one in 4 years. It fails almost every MoT first time, and had an oil leak for the last 10 years, but its been reliable. Not bad for 3k in 2011, and now just touching 270k miles.

As for fuel, I consistently got 15-16 litres per 100km open road, 18 in the city 😂 as for the suspension, you can bypass the compressor and install valves instead, and pump them up at the service station.
