My black lab boy, Jax, is well past 8 years old and is still a nut for ducks. He was doing water retrieves at 10 weeks old, jumping off the dock at 3 months and retrieved his first birds (on Missouri river) at just shy of 6 months old. He's been going hard ever since!

Yeah silver labs etc aren't a recessive gene, they're a new breed if anything mixing labs with other dogs its no coincidence that the first silver labs came out of kennels which also had weimaraners Nothing against them if that's what people want, im sure they're nice dogs in their own right. it shouldn't really come into it when choosing a lab.

The chocolate ones really do tend to be less intelligent. I don’t pretend to know why, but I have seen it several times, and the stereotype didn’t fall out of the sky.
Is it possible to find a good hunting/FT dog that is brown? Yes. But, you just about have to start with looking for a good dog and then happen to come across a chocolate one.
Are all black labs great? No. Are all black labs with a FT champion line pedigree good hunter/FT dogs? Absolutely not.
But, it wasn’t until the 1990’s that ANY chocolate lab won a NFTC. That is probably because selective breeding for color in chocolate-only kennels had produced chocolate dogs without the requisite qualities needed for success in field trials. If you breed for color, hunting/FT is irrelevant and gets lost. If you breed for NFTC’s, color isn’t relevant and chocolates are rare.

We are planning to get our second mini schnauzer! She’s almost 2 weeks old!! I don’t have a backyard for a lab :( hopefully someday when we have a yard we will get a Labrador retriever!

Can't emphasize enough on quality genetics, these dogs will cost you more up front but chances are they will cost you less in vet bills they will give you more years of field service, we can breed out the inherent health issues, but we must support the breeders that are doing this, I loved all of my dogs and I never hesitated to take care of them medically, but I will never support a breeder that isn't consistently try to breed out unwanted genetics .

She had the body and endurance of an American and the demeanor of an English. I look forward to the next 4legged adventure partner 😊

I love labs. I like boys. I dont go for a specific color but to be honest when i went to pick out my last lab i was set on a black boy since my previous was black but i came home with a yellow boy who was so great he hung off my beard and pretty much picked me that day. He passed away a little while ago and that was super difficult. I just recently got a new lab puppy hes also yellow but this time i didn't have a color preference. I like the breeder i went through a lot she has silvers and reds and all the designer colors except white i believe white is more for english lab blood lines. But i really dont know how i feel about silvers/charcoals etc.. maybe im a little old school but i like the traditional colors. What i asked though was if i could just look at all the boys together regardless of litter and color lets look at them all and ill pick a boy and i picked my yellow boy Ben. Bens parents were a yellow and a dark yellow or fox red his mom is a beautiful deep fox red and usually i havent liked the reds so much like im not crazy for them but ive never seen one like her.
I really didn't want to factor price into my decision because its just not very important with such a decision to me i believe they should all be the same but i asked what her most expensive boy costs and made sure to bring enough so i could make a good choice.
A long time ago when i was purchasing a lab they wanted 480 for blacks and 500 for yellows i really just dont get that. But this new breeder i used charges between 1100 and 3000 i think but she is really nice and gave me a good price if i were to get the expensive colors. I believe they should be priced all the same or at least maybe not so crazy different but i had a great experience and would definitely go through this breeder again.

Just my opinion as a lab owner. If you want “a family dog that only hunts only a couple times of year” get the English lab from a breeder that breeds for retrieving. We have an English that LOVES retrieving.
You’ll have a nice calm dog for the 355 days a year that you are not hunting 😂

  • @barbararoberts571

There are "English" show labs that hunt. Some breeders have that as a goal.

I feel like they talked about English Labs with a stigma to them. Ive hunted with mainly English labs and they have all been amazing and some have been better than a lot of the American Labs Ive hunted with. I feel it comes down to the training of the dog.

If breeder hasn't done these checks but you swear you have found the right litter then at least try to interact with the sire and dam. Do they retrieve? Are they a mature age and of good health? That is how responsible hunters tried to check up on their litters back in the day.

I've had dogs forever, but I've never had two dogs at once that were all mine (despite living in a house with 8+ dogs that were family pets, and training quite a few German Shepherds, Mals, on and on). Well, as of now, I have a 12 month male lab. I'm for sure getting a second lab from a litter with parents I absolutely love! My decision dilemma is do I go with a male or a female as the second dog? The second dog will be a half sibling to my male lab. With that in mind, I'm thinking go with a male pup. The litter I'm buying from should be very similar to the lab I have. My lab has been ruling the roost over the last year since he arrived. Again, I'm thinking go with a male pup, as I intend on keeping both dogs intact. Generally, getting a female makes for a better choice given that I have a male, but they're half siblings and I don't want to risk any accidental breeding. I admit I'm lazy here on not wanting to keep up with an intact female, where I must kennel her due to heat cycles. I like either male or female for training purposes. This litter I'm buying from has a wonderful set of puppies male and female.
Would you get a female and just spay? Have any of you ever done the ovary sparing spay? That prevents any litters but keeps the hormones in place. Why would I bring this up? I've seen more than enough spay incontinence issues in conventionally spayed females. It's absolutely annoying with all the constant piddling peeing. If you don't do the traditional spay that takes the ovaries and the uterus, you don't get spay incontinence. Anyways, spaying seems a real hassle, if I can just get a male as the second pup, and not have to deal with it........*but* I would really like to get the right second dog so my male lab is a happy camper with the new one (none of that constant rivalry crap that is possible). I could go about keeping them in crates/kennels separate but that's a chore. I'd rather just set this up so I have a happy compatible team. Is it a stupid idea to get a male pup? Or, should I just get the female (half sibling), and deal with the whole spay surgery thing?
As far as pups in this litter I'm selecting from goes, they're a few weeks old now, and I really like the *entire* litter.
    What would you do?
Am I just over-thinking this issue?

      Try searching at huntinglabpedigree.com
Try asking through a retriever club to get a look at breeders that actually have working dogs.
Oops, I figure you may be looking for a German Shorthair Pointer? Not sure, lol. Well if you seek a Lab, then my link suggestion above can get you started.
