I picked up an n55 m235i and the previous owner put a v**f race exhaust on with a dinan performance midpipe. The system is lightweight and functional, but i knew that it wasn't meant for me long term and have actively begun searching on how or what I am going to fix/revise this. The tone and drone could have vastly been improved with tuned resonator, taking away that annoyance between 2700 and 3300 rpm. At some point in life, Id love to meet both you and alex from lsc, but more importantly, since im in the midwest as well, sometime have your team guide or build a way better "performance daily driver" exhaust. I love nice exhaust, but theres a difference between purpose volume and just loud and crass. Keep up the good work, hopefully a future client someday.

My question has always been where to place the mufflers and megaphones throughout the system. How does the position of these change the tone of the exhaust? Is it better to have megaphones at the beginning of the system, in the middle or at the end? How does the length of the megaphones affect the performance and sound? Is it better to have mufflers at the end of the exhaust system or in the middle? It would be great to know that information with the help of your experience. Great video!

I just finished my first full stainless with the right welding wire and gas this time. Ugly but functional welds. I had to use pie cuts to find different angles in 3 spot. I found myself using tape to hold them in place then peeled some back to tack. I noticed any angle cut pieces elongates the hole size and doesnt match exactly. Had to cut apart one section after it moved an inch off. Found welding my way back was better. Learnd cheap v bands are trash. Learnd v bands warp and need to be filed flatt. Came out okay. Made my own x pipe out of 45° to keep a low angle and didnt over cut the middle to cause a pinch point.

So the 1” per 100 hp rule… hp is linear and pipe diameter to cross section is exponential. So even in your example of 700hp with two 3.5” pipes (thats 19.2 square inches, 2.75 per 100) the rules falls apart because if you used one 7” pipe it would be 38.5 square inches (5.5 per 100hp), about half the exhaust velocity.
    Some examples I’m familiar with:
Stock SBC street engine with 300 hp two 2.5” pipes (breaks your rule), thats 3.3 square inches per 100 hp.
Racing SBC with 450 hp uses two 3.5” pipes, 4.3 square inches per 100hp.
Modern Corvette Z06 with 670hp, two 3” pipes. 2.11 inches per 100 hp (reflects average corvette driver).
Based on those I’d say a much better rule of thumb would be 2-3 square inches per 100hp on a street engine. 3-4 square inches on a racing engine. 4-5 square inches on hot race engine.
And your other example.. At 2.75 square inches per 100hp an 1800hp engine should have a single 8” pipe or two 5.5” pipes.

Solid work as is the standard for FMU.
Only disagreement is the X-pipe recommendation. For any large displacement V-8, true dual, equal length exhaust is the best sound. The rough, guttural roar is the brutal cacophony that makes other engines hide.

New to your channel and very happy to find experts in the field. I will be coming to you guys for my next build. Thankfully not too far away in Ohio LOL. What has been your experience with Venturi pipes? Many years ago, I had a 2007 Mitsubishi eclipse GT with a 3.8 l V6. I built a custom exhaust four times to get it right. Unfortunately it was the year before they switched to a dual exhaust design so an x-pipe wasn't in the cards. In the final build, it was the Venturi pipe that got me over the 300 WHP mark. I was pretty happy getting from 263 BHP to 300 WHP and still being NA. I am glad I stopped there because was starting to follow this wild Russian guy who frankensteined the Evo AWD system into his 4th Gen eclipse and went forced induction. My fabrication skills aren't that good lmao. Neither was the $10K price tab to pull that off.

  • @j4ck1eX3

So what’s the opinion on ovular cross-sections for pipes? I’ve always figured the flow is roughly the same as long as the internal volume is the same as a circular pipe. The only variation I can think of is bending along the long axis of the oval or the short axis leading to different amounts of air friction. Would love to hear more about this since I’m trying to custom fab a flatter exhaust header by using ovals instead of circles!

    Hey OJ,
Im curious; is there a rule of thumb that the exhaust should step up in diameter or step down in diameter as you progress from the collector to tailpipe? I'd always grown up hearing the old school train of thought that as the exhaust gasses cool they take up less space so you step down the pipe in size to speed up velocity which kind of made sense at the time but i have recently heard people reccomend stepping up in diameter for optimum performance.

Hype. Used them many times and while they do more than many after market options… it’s not better than a high quality straight through design.

We’ve been playing with exhaust development since 2008. A time where we weren’t video’n everything for the tube but lots of content written for our blog you can pour over on our website.
This video is about getting the best power AND sound.
The h pipe can perform similarly depending on the application but never sound as clean, they develop a blatty rasp from the 90’ degree intersections.
Some people like it cause they hear a decent sounding vehicle with an h pipe and they think it’s the h-pipe, not knowing what that that same config would sound like with a proper non-90 x pipe… ON THE SAME EXACT SYSTEM (it would sound cleaner)
Because this particular experience has formed our opinion- It doesn’t make more or less power, it sounds worse, so why use it if we feel it’s never better?

‘84 AMC Eagle. All original parts and setup. Already runs quiet even in 4x4. How would adding a second pipe effect performance and sound? Could I make it even quieter without cutting power?

Nice! I have an 07 Ridgeline and the muffler is getting a rust spot, what muffler would make the V6 sound good without sounding like a fart can?

Fantastic video! I'm local to you guys and have been considering inquiring with you guys about a catback system for my 2014 Cayman S. The current system now sounds great up top but during normal driving drones so bad.

Hey OJ, love the videos. I have a 2018 Tahoe with 6.2L and a Whipple supercharger with smog legal tune. I want to upgrade exhaust, but seems no one makes an exhaust with bigger than 3” tubing. Would you build me something cat back? You think 3.5” is worth it for 640hp at tie crank?
    Thank you

Is there a video of that blue mustang? With 4 vibrants and megaphones, it might be one of the very few s550 cars that actually sound good!

You shouldn't get any "sugaring" inside the pipe if you back purge a MIG weld just like you would a TIG.

What about the NA 2023 Nissan Frontier 3.8 v6? What size I want to use an H & X pipe for dual exhaust. Any advice would help. It's my first v6 to modify.👍

Dual 2.5… anything bigger you’ll be dealing with drone and other unpleasantries that won’t equate to power… also.. don’t use a H pipe if you care about it sounding decent.

I have a 7th gen Toyota Celica. The 2ZZ-GE engine has a 4 to 1 exhaust manifold, but also has a metal separator that protrudes out the manifold to join to the other side of the rest of the exhaust.
I’ve had 2 DC Sports manifolds and in both that metal separator has come off and one even blocked the pipe to the point where it destroyed my cat.
First question, if Toyota from factory has that separator in there, then wouldn’t buying an aftermarket manifold without it (most cheap ones don’t have it) be counter productive? They put it there for a reason and the joining pipe continues that separation.
Second, in an old car like mine, how would I now get a “performance” manifold or would it really matter? I have to now either keep using the DC sport one without the separator, or go back to stock.
I had more questions but I lost my train of thought.

You say you don't like the the H pipe because of less power and rasp. I don't disagree on the power aspect but every X-pipe I've heard sounds like it has more rasp and the H-pipe always seems to have a deeper more pleasant sound. Is your X-pipe just different than the others on the market and has less rasp?
