Oh, Karen! The Sarah Milthorp sampler is gorgeous & the project bag is so pretty! Love Hawk’s Hollow too! I like the single strand of licorice red on the 36 ct.Great tip on the door viewer too. Love how you researched the silk colors for your Dorcas sampler…it’s beautiful. And good gravy, your antiquing finds are glorious!
Thanks, Georgia!! 🙂 I’m really loving working on Dorcas Haynes, it is a beautiful sampler. It was a good visit to the local antique shop. Sometimes I go in there and don’t find much and other times I find some beautiful things. This was one of those good visits. 🙂 Thanks again for your note!!
Hi Karen, it was me that asked about Lakeside linen and what makes it so great. I really appreciate that you take the time to show and compare one linen to another and offer options. It’s very helpful. I will take a look at the video you mentioned with Nicola. I’m sure it will be interesting, because anything she talks about tends to be interesting! 😊
Hi Jackie! Thanks for letting me know. I looked and looked for your comment after we chatted and could not find it. Thank you for posting. 🙂 So glad you enjoyed the video. I think you will enjoy the FlossTube with Nicola and Pat. I watched it some time ago and think I will rewatch it. It was very interesting and I appreciate their time they took to make it. Thanks again!
Hi again. I enjoyed seeing all of your cross stitching. Your house one is my favorite. I would use 2 strands on the red sampler. Your haul leaflets , I loved! I want them too. Hope to see you soon.
Thank you Karen for another fun & informative video. PLEASE let us know if you found your silks. 🤞🏻 I really love the red licorice floss you are using- yes- personal preference & perhaps you’ll love it more if you take a peek through your ‘peep-hole’ eye glass. I’ve used one for quilting for years! Got it out of my front door when we repainted it. 😀
Hi KC, thanks so much! 🙂 I did finally find them, whew, I was started getting worried about where they could be! Will give details on the next FlossTube. 🙂 I’ve been playing with solutions for the Americana Red sampler, am pleased with what’s happening. I will show it next time. Working on it right now, in fact. 🙂🙂 Thanks again!
Hi Karen. I love your videos, you do a great job. Very informative with lots of good suggestions. I especially love your antique finds. I have another suggestion for viewing your cross stitch for any mistakes: take a picture of your piece with your phone. I was stitching a piece with hedgehogs on it as a gift for my sister. I took a picture and realized that I forgot to stitch a nose (4 stitches) on one of the hedgehogs. The picture is also a way for me to record my finishes. Thanks again for your videos. I can appreciate all the time you put in to record a video.
Hi Paulette, I agree, 36 count is sometimes that odd place. One strand may look thin, but 2 stands look too thick. . . I'm still pondering what to do. . . might stitch some of the denser motifs and see how they look. . . . Thanks so much for your note! 🙂
Hi Leslie, so glad you enjoy the video and thanks so much for your note. I need to get back to Sarah, its such a pretty sampler. I guess we all just need more time or not sleep or something. lol Thanks again!
OMG i can't believe you had the same idea as i had!! There are a gazillion dmc colors for let freedom ring, and i didn't want to put entire skein on project card, so i did just what you did. I used only those cards by LoRan 25 years ago and i loved their system.
Hi Susan, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. It's so much fun to hear you had the same idea!! Thanks for letting me know. :) I'm not familiar with LoRan. I will have to take a look .
Hi Karen, Dorcas blew my socks off! The richness of floss colors you chose so far are stunning. On your red sampler, you might co sider a re-start on a 40 count. I find some linen dyers' 36 count to be fairly loose. But, you'll make the choice you're most comfortable with! And, thank you for the talk on different linens. It was most informative. Unfortunately, after several years of trying to snag a piece of Lakeside, I'm out of luck. 40 is my count of choice and right now Number 12 Stitch Co and LFA Linens are my favorite. Hugs, Candace
Hi Candace, thanks so much for your nice note and I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! 🙂 I have tried a few things for the Americana Red sampler and am pleased with the final decision. . . after trying several solutions. I will share on a future FlossTube. I really enjoy Number12 Stitch Co linen. I’ve been able to get a few pieces and really love them. I agree about Legacy as well. Wonderful linen! We are so fortunate to have so many options for linen. . . . even if we can’t find the one we are searching for, we still have lovely options. 🙂 Thanks again!
Hi Karen-I received The Loara Standish Sampler!! I can't wait to start it. It is a bit overwhelming as I read thru some of the instructions but I'm hoping I figure it out as I go. Thank you for this wonderful recommendation. Also I wanted to thank you for the linen comparisons you have made. Since I don't have a stash this helps me to choose alternative linens when 'out of stock' seems to show up so often. I look forward to your floss tubes.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and congratulations on getting the Loara Standish sampler!! After I looked everything over, I pulled the information out for just band one and worked on that first. I found just focusing on each band at the time was very helpful and less overwhelming. I am working on band five right now. 🙂 Thanks so much for your note, so glad the linen comparisons have been helpful 🙂
How exciting you are in the 'Boro; I'm in Franklin. Will have to go searching for your local antique shops. Still want to get the Carter House chart. You added some beautiful samplers in your recent haul.
Thanks, Pat! So glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your note! I live about an hour from Murfreesboro, and get to Country Cupboard every few months. Beverly is so nice and I enjoy visiting her shop. Last time I checked, the gift shop at the Carter House had the charts kitted with linen and DMC. That’s where I got my chart, but I did change the linen to a higher count. Thanks again for your note!
If it was me, I would go to a more vibrant red or same color & lighten the linen. Thanks for the tip on piecing working copies together, as I have omit stitches! Thanks for another great video. Happy Stitching 😊
Thanks so much for your note, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. I'm still pondering what to do. The area of the border I showed is the lightest area of the stitching. The other motifs are more dense. I think I'm going to do a few of the denser areas and see how it looks. I'm may be happy with it, or I make need to change the thread. Still deciding, we will see . . . 🙂
Karen, Thanks for sharing your lovely stitching! If I were you I would use a different floss on on Americana Red. Darker floss, more toward burgundy would be nice on the linen. The floss you are using looks too pink to me. One thread, two threads would look bunchy in my opinion. As you said it is personal choice. Your work is beautiful!!!!
Hi Christy, Thanks so much for your note and I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂 I did try stitching with two strands after I taped the video, thought that might work. . . it is too thick for me. I'm still pondering what to do. . . We will see , , , 🙂
Your version of Dorcas is stunning! I hope you will publish your full conversion when it’s done as I really prefer your choices. Your suggestions for linen subs are also really helpful. Keep them coming please!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and thanks so much for your nice note! I'm so please with Dorcas so far. I just started on Band 3 and am keeping notes on what I'm using. It's such a pretty sampler and I'm really enjoying working on it. Thanks again for your note! 🙂
Hey Karen, Was that your Dorcus Haynes missing silks in your beautiful new thread cabinet?? I love that band sampler but don't have the time or dollars to get that one yet! Thanks for your informative videos, please keep them coming! Happy Stitching! xoxo
Hi Barbara, nope, silks weren’t in the cabinet. I finally found them. Will share details in the next FlossTube. Whew, I was getting worried, but they finally showed up. 🙂 Thanks for your note! 🙂🙂
I love the PTP Doubloon for your red sampler, so if it were mine, I'd darken the thread or maybe even consider using Sulky if you can find it in that lighter red. I hope you've found your silk. You know the best way to find it would be to order more! That's almost guaranteed to cause your lost thread to reappear!
I did finally find it. Whew! I was starting to worry. . . but you are right. The fastest way to find it is to order more. 😂 I really do love the doubloon. I do have Sulky thread as well as Flower thread. Might have to give them a try. 🙂
I'm so thankful I came across your flosstube videos Karen!! I love how you explain everything in detail! You care enough just to take the time to explain everything you're doing & why! I feel like I'm going to school learning how to Cross Stitch on higher counts which I am from the best teacher ever! You're amazing to say the least!! Thank you very much Karen! ❤ I've started from the beginning of your videos so I did not miss ANYTHING!! 🎉 I want to pass the test right! 😂 👍❤❤
Hi Melanie! I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos and thanks so much for your sweet comments! I'm really please the videos are helpful. You made my day!! 🙂
I have the same Star mercerized thread case you have! Love it. Congrats on the “find.”Re: the 36ct with the red licorice floss, I know what you mean about coverage but I have to say, 36ct and 1 over 2 is my favorite way to stitch so I would probably keep it that way. Funny, I just completed One Nation the same way, and kept looking at others’ 2 over 2 on the One Nation FB group and thinking they looked great, and I did question myself. But the *ease of one thread! Plus I think many were on a lower ct of linen. And mine looks fine. Currently stitching on Smoky Mountain Christmas and doing the same thing! Loving the 1 over 2, wondering about 2 over 2. Sorry I’m not much help! 🫤
Hi Melissa, thanks so much for your note and I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. I really love the thread case, so glad I found it. It fits perfectly in the corner of my sewing room. 🙂 I know what you mean about 36ct and questioning . . . I tried several things and finally decided what to do and I'm very pleased. Will describe the process in the next regular FlossTube. (I saw a friend working on One Nation and love it!) I watched the Evertote FlossTube last night and Jacob (Modern Folk Embroidery) was talking about stitching 1 over 2 . . . he basically does it on everything! Thanks again for your note!
Thank you for sharing your projects and your antique finds! Love them! I was wondering when you're holding up a project and the pattern w/the picture, if you wouldn't mind holding them up a little bit longer🤗 Thank you for considering!
Hi Susan, thank you for your nice note. I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate it. 🙂 I will make a point to hold them out a little longer.
Thanks, Ginny! So glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for your nice comment. Finally found the silks. I was missing 4 of them. I will tell what happened in a future FlossTube. Whew, so glad I found them, I was starting to get worried. 🙂
What an action packed video Karen! I really love what you are doing with the Dorcas Haynes sampler, it is looking amazing. I received the Loara Standish kit a few weeks ago! I think I'll start when I have the brain power to figure out how to convert the Standish stitch to over two threads, as I can't fathom doing the whole thing over three threads! I may do Elizabeth Harbourne first as a "practice piece." Looking forward to the next episode.
So glad you enjoyed the video. I do have Loara on my table to work on, when I'm not working on Dorcas. Both are so beautiful! I did the Standish Stitch over two. I'm the same way, just did not want to do it over three threads. I practiced a little on a scrap of linen and followed the illustration. . . . ignoring the 3 threads and did it over 2. It didn't take too long to get the hang of it and once it did, the stitch is really quite fun to create. Thanks so much for your note! 🙂
So glad you enjoyed the video and thanks so much for your nice note! You are correct, no “J” on the original sampler. From what I’ve researched, that letter ( and “U” as well) wasn’t in common use in the early 1700’s. Found that very interesting.
For your red Quaker, you might consider using a silk thread such as Gloriana or Belle Soie Cranberry (both brands have a Cranberry). I find that silks are usually not as tightly wound and have more body, so this might do the trick 😊
Hi Angela, I am still playing with the red sampler. I did stop by Nashville Needlework (mostly a needlepoint shop, but they have a lovely supply of silks.) and I picked up some different silks to try. I'm still on the fence about making changes, but I am going to try the silk. Thanks so much for your note! 🙂
Hi Bonnie, thank you for your nice comment, I am so glad you enjoyed the video. I get the black floss rings from Amazon. I think they are called black binder rings.
I have a question for you! When you darken your colors on Dorcas Haynes, do you use from the silks from Victoria Clayton you purchased for this sampler or use dmc or other silks? Do you have a list we could follow? I also love the darker colors! Thanks for having such great knowledge and knowhow with all of us!
Hi Jenny, I’ve been using a combination of the Vikki Clayton silks and some silks I have on hand. I’m out of town for the next month or so and don’t have my Dorcas Haynes notes with me. Once I’m home, I will see if I kept notes as to what I’ve used so far. 🙂 Thanks so much for your comment! 🙂
Is it an Antique… then sparse is good… little girls didn’t much at all.., Up here in Ohio the leaves 🍁 are birthing beautiful colors… Out in Amish Country it’s stunning… fields of gold, beautiful colors… little ones running around… clothes hanging on the line ….and Plenty of Peanut butter pie 🥧 Blessings
Not an antique, new design, but it does “feel” old. Our leaves are just starting to turn, still looks of green. Love Ohio Amish Country! What a beautiful place! 🙂
Hi Karen..I love your floss tube..I just started cross stitching about a year ago..I want to ask your advice..so far I have used only Aida..14. 16. And 18 counts..if I want to get to linen what should I use next. Evenweave .? Lugana ? What number..or jump in with linen..what count? Also how many threads for what counts of fabric ? I feel when I watch you I am watching my teacher…thank you for all your sharing ..I am working on live on little…which I saw yours…just beautiful. I am using 16 count Aida on mine
Hi Linda, I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos and thanks so much for your nice note! Isn't Live on Little a beautiful pattern?!? I am enjoying stitching on it so much! If you want to start stitching on linen, I would select a smaller project and do Lugana. It comes in sizes of 25, 28 and 32. You will be stitching over two threads, rather than one as on Aida. So 28 count Lugana over two (threads) is equal to 14 count Aida and 32 count Lugana (over 2) is equal to 16 count Aida. (I found this helps me think about the sizes when I am comparing Aida to linen.) Our little stitching group just met this week and my friend Sue wanted to switch from Aida to linen. She is working on 25 ct Lugana and is loving it. It only took her a short time to get used to counting the linen threads, rather than the (Aida) holes. We picked up some Lugana for her at cross stitch shop, I think she picked up Vintage Country Mocha. I know 123.stitch has a nice variety as well. I did a little mention of moving from stitching on Aida to linen in my FlossTube #17, about 18 minutes into the video. Here is a link: ruclips.net/video/xvLcg76iJxI/видео.htmlsi=8NyHbPqVQcvW1lz_ I hope this is helpful and let me know how it goes! Thanks again for your nice note! 🙂
I love the lighter touch for the red sampler. I wouldn’t change anything
Thanks, Patti! 🙂
Oh, Karen! The Sarah Milthorp sampler is gorgeous & the project bag is so pretty! Love Hawk’s Hollow too! I like the single strand of licorice red on the 36 ct.Great tip on the door viewer too. Hi Donna, silks have been found. Whew, I was getting a little worried. Thanks so much for your note, it is very much appreciated! 🙂
Thank you Karen for another fun & informative video. Lovely video! You grew such a cute little pumpkin!
Thanks, Shari! So glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂
Isn’t that little pumpkin the cutest???? I just love them. 🎃🎃🎃
Hi Shirley, taking a photo is a great idea! Thanks so much for your note and I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. :)
American Red I love the way the 1 strand looks, but that is what I like! Any count lower I would use 2 stands. Love all your projects!
Hi Paulette, I agree, 36 count is sometimes that odd place. One strand may look thin, but 2 stands look too thick. . . I'm still pondering what to do. . . might stitch some of the denser motifs and see how they look. . . .
Thanks so much for your note! 🙂
I am drooling over Dorcas Haynes and love your color choices. Really, though, I need to start on my Sarah Milthorp! 🙂
Hi Leslie, so glad you enjoy the video and thanks so much for your note. I need to get back to Sarah, its such a pretty sampler. I guess we all just need more time or not sleep or something. lol
Thanks again!
You have very interesting & informative videos.
Thanks for sharing.
Marilyn
Hi Marilyn, so glad you enjoyed the video and thank you so much for your nice note. 🙂
OMG i can't believe you had the same idea as i had!! There are a gazillion dmc colors for let freedom ring, and i didn't want to put entire skein on project card, so i did just what you did.

Hi Karen, Dorcas blew my socks off! The richness of floss colors you chose so far are stunning. On your red sampler, you might co sider a re-start on a 40 count. Hi Candace, thanks so much for your nice note and I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! 🙂
I have tried a few things for the Americana Red sampler and am pleased with the final decision. . . after trying several solutions.
Thanks again!
I kitted Dorcas Haynes yesterday at The Attic. I converted the chart AVAS to 100/3. I think they are lovely! 😍 Conversion available at The Attic.
That sounds lovely!!! Thanks for letting us know. 🙂
Hi Karen-I received The Loara Standish Sampler!! I can't wait to start it. It is a bit overwhelming as I read thru some of the instructions but I'm hoping I figure it out as I go.
Thanks so much for your note, so glad the linen comparisons have been helpful 🙂
How exciting you are in the 'Boro; I'm in Franklin. Will have to go searching for your local antique shops. Still want to get the Carter House chart. You added some beautiful samplers in your recent haul.

Thanks, Barbara!!
Finally found them, whew, I was starting to get worried. Will share the story on the next FlossTube.
Thanks again! 🙂🙂

Hey Karen, Was that your Dorcus Haynes missing silks in your beautiful new thread cabinet?? I love that band sampler but don't have the time or dollars to get that one yet! Thanks for your informative videos, please keep them coming! Happy Stitching! xoxo

You are correct, no “J” on the original sampler. From what I’ve researched, that letter ( and “U” as well) wasn’t in common use in the early 1700’s. Found that very interesting.
Either darken the thread or use 2 strands.😊
Really don’t like using two strands, so I need to either change the linen or darken the floss. Still debating. . . .
I think you need to change the floss or use two strands. If you don’t want to change the floss make the fabric lighter. Thanks for sharing.
I would use Sulky for your 36 count project
Thanks, Denise! I am thinking about that or maybe Flower thread. 🙂
On the Dorcas sampler is the J missing on purpose? A story behind that?
The J is missing on the original sampler. I believe the J wasn’t common at that time, but will have to do some research about it. 🙂
Good question! 🙂🙂
This was a wonderful and informative flosstube. Thank you. Where do you great your black floss rings from? Thanks
Hi Jenny,
I’ve been using a combination of the Vikki Clayton silks and some silks I have on hand.
I’m out of town for the next month or so and don’t have my Dorcas Haynes notes with me. Once I’m home, I will see if I kept notes as to what I’ve used so far. 🙂
Thanks so much for your comment! 🙂
Is it an Antique… then sparse is good… little girls didn’t much at all..,
Up here in Ohio the leaves 🍁 are birthing beautiful colors…
Out in Amish Country it’s stunning… fields of gold, beautiful colors… little ones running around… clothes hanging on the line ….and Plenty of Peanut butter pie 🥧
Blessings
(I found this helps me think about the sizes when I am comparing Aida to linen.)
Our little stitching group just met this week and my friend Sue wanted to switch from Aida to linen.
Here is a link: ruclips.net/video/xvLcg76iJxI/видео.htmlsi=8NyHbPqVQcvW1lz_
I hope this is helpful and let me know how it goes! Thanks again for your nice note! 🙂
