I totally enjoy your videos! Your work on the Loara Standish Sampler is beautiful! It was the first sampler I ever stitched and like you, I purchased my kit from Pilgrim’s Hall. That was back in the 90’s and a new rabbit hole opened. 😂 I then attended Joanne Harvey’s retreat at the Peabody-Essex Museum in Salem for the Mary Hollingworth Sampler. Fun!
    Enjoy your summer!

Karen, I so enjoyed this vlog. So much of what you talked about resonated with me. I too am trying to de-clutter. And I quilt also - I have ‘special’ fabric which I occasionally just pull out to admire. Making fabric and floss decisions where there are so many choices is something I find particularly challenging as a quilter who is newish to cross stitch. I am want to be bolder in my own choices - I am currently stitching The Dwelling Place by Kathy Barrick - when I saw your version it was an epiphany! I chose a burnt orange fabric - not Havana - a little lighter and I’ve chosen greys instead of greens for the brick work and Quaker motifs. I wanted it to resemble the mill houses in my native Northern England. Thanks for the inspiration. Loved your stitching. Regarding the French small pillow I very much agree with another comment suggesting JBW designs - her designs are very much in the same vein. Looking forward to your next flosstube. Kind regards, Stephanie ps if you miss quilt designing you could always do some cross stitch designing? Xxx

Hi Stephanie, thanks so much for your nice note and I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. :)
I love your idea of changing the colors a bit to resemble mill houses in New England. It's really fun to see the choices come together and then it becomes a little more personal.
I agree about the JBW designs, so elegant and would work well with the pillow I'm going to do. Might have to ponder that . . .
      Thanks again!

Hi, Karen! So nice to see your smile again 😊. I love the changes you made on the Shores of HRH, especially the darkening the house and removing the tree & changing the mermaid to a whale…perfect! Don’t you just love the fabric from Number 12 Stitch Co? Her colors are so gorgeous! It was absolutely fascinating to hear about the Loara Standish Sampler…I loved learning that history! Do you want to know a secret? I actually love the sound of crinkling ☺️🩷. My favorite choice to go with the elegant pillow is the rose, because it is also very elegant and the colors look similar. Thanks for all your hard work in preparing this video, it was great!

Your suggestion about doing a full cross stitch every 10th stitch on the border of the squares of Shores of Hawk Run Hollow is a game changer. As I was looking at your piece I wanted to share one change I have made. In the block with the lady standing on top of the house I changed the skin color to a flesh tone. To me I was not happy with the white for the skin. I'm hesitant to take out stitching but in this case happy I did! Thank you for the video.

I always enjoy watching your videos. I really think you would be happy stitching Ann Jonson on Bee’s Knees. At least from what I can tell from the colors on my monitor, that is the prettiest. Then for the one you were going to stitch on Bee’s Knees (can’t remember the name), do you have a piece of “Old Sheep” by Xju? That might be a good choice for that one. Whatever you decide, I’m sure it will be just right. You’ve got me VERY interested in the Laura Standish. I love American history, and that one would be such a gem to have framed on my wall. I have the Loara Standish sampler as a kit with silk floss which I purchased from The Examplerary shop on Etsy. I hadn't thought of getting a set of floss from Vicki Clayton but I will be doing a comparison of what came with the kit to the Vicki Clayton set. I like the fabric it came with so I doubt it will get changed out.
The samplers that come from The Examplerary shop do have extensive instructions but they are worth having. I've learned a few new tricks just from reading through them. One that has come in handy even before starting a different sampler (Margaret Hawden) is if a single thread cross stitch doesn't provide sufficient coverage, then add an extra cross on the top leg. For me this has helped work through the mystery of one thread or two DMC or other cotton floss on 36 count where one thread is too sparse looking but two threads is too heavy for coverage but the extra leg is just right. On 40 count, one thread is usually enough especially if it's Soie d'alger silk because it seems to fluff up enough for just right coverage.
