- There is no feeling as special or as gratifying as the moment you summon out your Boss Monster, whether it’s a game-ending threat, an absurd interruption, or even just the silly or unknown card that’s unique to your strategy that you’ve put everything into making.
And the anime manages to capture that feeling incredibly well, from the Cool and Creepy bosses of villains and rivals to the graceful and majestic monsters of our protagonists.
So today we’re going to be looking at the ten best Boss Monsters featured in the anime, how they were used in the show, and why they were so impactful in the TCG.

I got confused when I saw other magician cards have higher numbers but in the end yu gi oh is a game of card effects. And the effect on dark magician says he is the ultimate wizard in terms of atk and def, so he wins anyway
You wanna know something crazy about Gumblar? In the anime, it's EVEN STRONGER. It doesn't get rid of 2 cards, it destroys EVERY card in the hands.

Stardust Dragon is easily my favorite protagonist monster of all time. It negates effects by tributing itself. Its Spark variant is one of my favorite cards ever.
I just wish Spark had wound up being a Tuner like its original self.
It negates destruction effects.(Well if a card banishes tributes or sends it does nothing).

Honestly, Stardust Dragon is probably one of my favorite boss monsters, that isn't a Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl or Blue Eyes White Dragon Clone.
...well, I guess it kind of resembles Blue Eyes a little, but my point stands.
It embodies Yusei Fudo’s will to protect, even if he has to bear their pain himself. My favorite card and my favorite (YGO) character.

The funny thing is, that Fortuno didn't only have anime Shock Master, which is more busted, than the IRL banned version, but also Number 11: Big Eye, which is also very powerful.
He also apparently had another number he hide away that he said was stronger then both only for Kite to take that one, only thing is it’s never revealed what the number was and for the life of me can’t think of one that honestly could have been

Honestly, Number 16 makes sense, for a villain needed to be threatening, and being one-off meant they did not have to think about it getting directly supported or something.
I still wish we got a majestic form for Black Rose Dragon and got more out of the whole Psychic Duelists being a thing in 5Ds, after the Dark Signer arc it was just abruptly ended without any care for its story potential not only for Akiza who could have had her own arc or two from the fallout of Sayer no longer being the Arcadia Movement's leader and someone else likely taking his place, but how Psychic Duelists feel about Akiza leaving the group and their treatment by the people of society that has openly feared and hated them for having powers they can't control, much like Akiza herself.
She even LOST her powers out of nowhere for no clearly defined reason whatsoever! Talk about a waste of potential of a truly amazing and beautiful female character who had dueling prowess to keep up with the best of Team 5Ds. I still feel severely annoyed they let Aki lose in her team duel against Team Unicorn without taking a single member out, even after Jack lost before her. Forcing Yusei to face all three himself making her look weaker than she really is and nothing can convince this was nothing less than an insult to her skill as a duelist.
That’s the worst thing about Yu-Gi-Oh: it often forgets to have people besides the protagonist pull their weight. Ironic for a show with themes about the power of friendship, huh?
@@WDinATX A tragic irony honestly, which not only ruined Akiza's potential, but also those like Alexis, Bastion(I had high hopes for the genius), Luna(Her connection to the Duel Spirit Realm and how it impacts her life had serious potential), Rio, and Mai.
Aki got done really dirty in the 5D's anime, but she's still one of my favorites.
Divine was a really good villain, too. I wish Aki could've dueled him and won
@@Avrazael I would have LOVED to see that duel! An excellent opponent for Aki to summon Ruddy Rose Dragon against for the very first time to show she has moved on from Sayer/Divine, as well as her past as the /Black Rose Witch and how Yusei helped her grow as a person!

I love Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS. It has my favorite protagonist, Yusucka.
I find it hilarious that the reason Yusaku didn’t use Firewall Dragon that much because the writers find it difficult to right duels around it since it’s effects are THAT good. I’m glad Yusei and Aki’s boss monsters are considered really good!
Also because Firewall was banned so they weren't allowed to promote a banned monster, heck even in that Duel Power set what gave everyone all protagonist ace monsters with new art, they replaced Firewall with Decode Talker because it was banned when it released.

They had a canonical ban list in GX, but somehow Pot of Greed still wasn't banned.

A couple not on this list that I'm a little surprised but maybe makes sense.
Egyptian God Ra Sphere Mode - Would easily make the list because of it being a meta staple for a long time, but I'm guessing since it's not actual the boss Ra but a minor form and this card is more of a nod, maybe that's why it didn't count.
Exodia - Obviously one of the most famous, and competitive it still kinda comes up now and then, and who knows what the new Exodo stuff will do if anything. But also maybe it doesn't count as a boss because you aren't really making it the same way Idk.
There's even more to Firewall Dragon's story; when trying to balance the game to compensate for its broken FTK potential, Konami really dragged their feet on actually hitting Firewall Dragon itself and limited or banned other cards in its combos, leading to things like ABC Dragon Buster's decks being crippled by the limiting of A Assault Core just because it had loop potential with Firewall's effect
Yeah with Firewall Dragon being Playmaker's main boss monster, Konami had to wait to ban it due to all the already too far into production episodes it was gonna show up in. So they had to do some temporary measures until they could actually hit FWD.
BLS still has a lot of use in Duel Links. All of the Yugis have a skill that automatically drop a bunch of Light and Dark monsters in the Graveyard, letting you summon whatever BLS monster you want immediately. When the skill dropped, it ran rampant through Ranked Duels. It eventually got power crept by Neos Wiseman, Tenyi, and Tachyon Dragon, but it's still a strong skill.

You mean to tell me that "Neos Wiseman" is actually *good* in Duel links?!
@@user-bu7vb5tg6bbecause of a skill released at the middle of last year that allows you to normal summon Neos and just places Yubel on the field and pops her 3 times.
@user-bu7vb5tg6b There was a skill dropped a while back that allows you summon out every version of Yubel, Wiseman, and Kluber in a single turn. Also Normal Summon Neos and Yubel without tribute.
I actually run a deck that uses three of the monsters on this list: Crystal Wing, Stardust, and Black Rose. I have a deck that's based around Black Rose Dragon for the most part, but it has several possible combos that can set up a winning board. Black Rose is my all-time favorite Synchro Monster, and probably my #2 overall, second only to DMG.

Akiza is easily favorite yu gi oh waifu of all time and the reason I'm subscribed to you n black rose dragon has special place in my heart alongside stardust dragon n my boy yusei for my favorite yu gi oh protagonist
I still use 101 in my shark deck in TCG because it's a great option for nash Knight uses as food for its effect and not a bad option for dealing with anoying monsters with floating effects like mirrorjade or other stuffs.

I'm somewhat surprised I didn't see Goyo Guardian, boss monster of Officer Trudge, on this list. He was, after all, powerful enough of a card to be first banned and then given an erratum.

I was playing YGO when Yata and Chaos Dragon was in their prime. Using a Vampire Lord deck, I made the top 8 twice.

Also funny you mention number 101: Silent Honor ARK, because a secret pack with it just hit master duel and my first duel after I faced a guy using it… he over-extended and lost all of hit cards and 15+ material to soul crossing

Yeah back in the day a lot of Sonic fans were also YuGiOh fans
It's very hard to articulate it in a good title, but have you thought about Top 10 (or if there aren't that many, Top 5) Most Used Shared Card Names? For example, Harpies have quite a few cards that call themselves "Harpie Lady" on the field, Cyber Dragons have "Cyber Dragon", and a few Water Field Spells are "Umi".
EDIT: I knew I was blanking on one other big one, but Skull Servants have "Skull Servant" in grave.
Shoutouts to Shooting Quasar Dragon, a boss monster that was so crazy it spawned a whole archetype of decks specifically dedicated to summoning it. Quasar was one of the first omni-negates that lived in the Extra Deck, and it also had insane OTK potential because it could attack two times minimum. It also floats into Shooting Star when it leaves the field, so it was difficult to out.
Now, Quasar decks didn’t see that much competitive success, since most were basically Quasar or bust and didn’t have any other options. They were also particularly weak against Maxx C since they really couldn’t afford to stop Special Summoning once they got started. But on Dueling Network and YGOPro they were incredibly popular, particularly because it made you feel like an anime protagonist sinking all of your resources into summoning such a strong monster. Quasar is still a relevant monster in Synchron decks because the omni-negate is just that powerful. Quasar may not be that special of a monster anymore, but upon release it gave players a taste of the speed and power of the modern game while still demanding a lot of resources so the negate wasn’t overbearing. Many decks also couldn’t make Quasar turn 1 or make multiple Qyasars, so there were opportunities for counterplay, making for interesting games.
As you can tell, I love Quasar. I think it’s the perfectly-designed Extra Deck omni-negate. It’s a monster I could see summoned a bunch and still enjoy watching players pop off. It’s anime powerful without being obnoxious.

I really like this format of going through famous cards and talking about what context they appeared in in the anime or manga, and what characters used them, so I think you should do it more if you're ever hard up for video ideas. or, if you've already done a lot of them, maybe make a playlist or a compilation. I'm always interested in learning about the story theming of cards but I'm like, a grown adult so I'm not really gonna watch a multi-hundred-episode filler-laden kids anime just to find out, you know?
fun facts: the number 16 in the anime cannot be destroyed by battle except by other numbers ( basic effect) and the floodgate effect remains per 2 of your oponent turns.
and the topologic gumblar effect in the anime is more broken.
first: the hand wipe effect destroys EVERY CARD in the oponent hand (maxx c players cry).
second: the 3000 burn damage cannot be negated (yusaku to counter this he cut the damage in half 2x with the continuous trap card called drop frame wedge).
third: he countain one extra effect if he has in the extra monster zone, all co linked monsters cannot be destroyed by card effects (including himself).
The other thing to mention in regards to Chaos Emperor Dragon, in that particular duel Kaiba also used Dimension Fusion to special summon all his banished monsters back onto the field.
That duel is honestly a testament to just how broken CED and Dimension Fusion are.

Yeah, I've been trying to build a modern King Tiger Deck on Master Duel for a while now! It has backup in the forms of Burden of the Mighty and Destiny HERO - Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer (no prizes for guessing why), alongside the ancient Trap Card, Light of Intervention! The idea is to Fuse Malicious with Denier and pairing their Summoning Power with Nemeses Corridor cuz Colossus is Unlimited on there! Anyway, the idea is to use these as a trio to Link Climb and Accesscode Talker stands as the pinnacle of potential outcomes, not only being able to gain an extra 3000 ATK on Summon, but also having three or more card pops! Also, I can jus as easily run Crystal Wing in my T.G. deck as I can Baronne de Fleur! Not least of all cuz I actually own a copy... of BOTH of them! (I still maintain that the Extra Deck versatility of T.G. is jus insane! Change my mind!)
You should do a video on Spells/Traps with artwork of monsters that didn't exist at the time of release.

@@TheGreatSalsaManNever seen Zexal, but anime villains aren't exactly known for running the best interaction suites, and Utopia decks are pretty good at OTKs with cards like Double and Lightning. Stop the Shock Master once and the game might just be over then and there.

I don't think that negating the effects of the monster you attach is necessary, also this is a ridiculous beatstick for ritual decks (good thing it's got no protection).

THERE, made the soft OPT Ritual summon into its own card, replaced it with a protection effect like its kin’s, and made it so neither player takes battle damage from battles involving it… So basically it can devour your opponent’s monsters en masse during the battle phase without being an automatic KO, while also protecting you from any battle damage against anything that would actually be able to overpower this card.
Maybe a random one but i would have liked to have seen Rainbow Neos. It showed off the bond between Judai and Johan and it's also a pretty strong card to boot.

Disappointed the egyptian god cards/Ra aren’t featured here. Their abilities in the anime (and eventually once they had legal versions) they were among the most powerful single monster cards in the game.

Plus Yusei and Aki are my favorite 5D’s characters, but I do NOT ship them together. The scripted romance between them was awful!

Red Demon destroys all it considers inferior friend or foe
Black Rose can self destruct and reduce ATK power if you try yo get close
Ancient Fairy can summon more friends and can change the battlefield to a more peaceful one
Black Feather can take in effect damage meant for a player and unleash those emotions to bring others to their senses
Life Stream stops effect damage and recovers LP of all players

I remember getting TER out on field in a middle school game way back when PSV was the latest TCG booster set. It was really slow and not nearly as fun as the anime made it look. Everyone hated it and i never put it in my deck again lol.
