Have to comment further, teacher to teach. The delicacy of his trills, the shadings, the demand that we anticipate to the last possible second before we explode. It's exquisite beyond words. Beethoven does this for me. Ella does this for me. Previn does this for me. This is absolutely heart-stopping and heart-pounding in turns. Breathtakingly, achingly beautiful.
I've been watching this recording for 10 years. I showed it to all of my piano students when I still taught. An absolutely mesmerizing, timeless performance.
Just the best version ever. I listened to this version for years.... Then saw it on RUclips and think I was paralyzed with amazement and joy that I was actually watching what I held in such high esteem. Btw... How does Gene Harris play with such dynamics? And Geez his hands must kill after the crazy glissandoz at the end! To have something this fine captured for society to view is a human treasure for all times!
thank you "the bluesiest jazz pianist of 'em all" While the rest of the world seeks other more convoluted paths to musical Nirvana, I'm sticking with Les McCann and Gene Harris and Red Garland's methodes, cuz they take me there without fail, and I can't seem to really dig into th3 stuff that skims over the top of the swing. I need it deep and wide and ....well,,,,,,, obvious. I need to feel enough that I can't stop moving. There's latin and classical and Indian and Uzbek and Mongolian inside jazz now, of course, but if you're going to play a swing ballad or bop.. GODAMMIT IT's GOT TO HAVE THE BLUES UNDERNEATH IT or it is mental musical wankery, from a rhythmic standpoint. or at best a nice. intellectual stylistic experiment. TING TING TING TING bore bore bor-ing. No, you cannot reinvent the wheel. You can mess with the treads and the rubber or plastic or metal, but it's got to be round, and it's got to ROLL.
This is the greatest piano player that has ever lived, in my opinion. I first saw him in Chicago when I was 14 nyears old in a local club that is long gone. I have seen him perform across the US and take pride at being able to applaud his gift. Thanks, Gene.
OMG that left hand comping chords while that hand simply killin it. I saw this at Jazz Alley in Seattle in 1990 still one of the best shows I have ever been to.
Yes indeed! Yes indeed! I should show this to more of my piano students. Thanks for the reminder. I can't believe that I don't listen to this at least 5 times a year. Hell, I just listened to another recording by him of this and I'm about to listen to this again. I bet I'll listen to it 3 more times before the night is out. You sound like a great teacher!
@6:57 no matter how many times I hear it..i would never fail to forget to breathe cos of just how stunning it is~ @6:43 that little eyebrow raise Ray shot at Jeff Hamilton..and him beaming like a child throughout the performance says it all as to the genuine joy Jazz brings to its musicians and audience. I find it extremely touching. I feel like I missed out that by the time I discovered Jazz some 3 years ago..all these legendary Jazz musicians were gone..But I will always cherish these YT performances as the testament to their glory.
This is about as good as it gets. The Ray Brown Trio with the incomparable Gene Harris on Piano. His funky, bluesy, jazz style will brighten your day! :)
Gone nearly 45 years not really gettin Jazz. Listening to this I just got it...that's just given me that all too rare hairs up the back of the neck feeling. Thanks for posting this.
The groove here. Serve the song. I am a bass player. We have Ray Brown himself keeping it simple but with a little bit of spice. When I teach bass., I always ask my students to transcribe much of this bass line. When I was learning myself in college, this was the standard of serving the song and grooving in Jazz. In pop, it is Paul McCartney and Ringo.
Man do I sure miss these two performing live. Thank goodness this was recorded, for there's nothing like viewing Gene Harris and Ray Brown performing. I dug the low five at the end as if yeah to say: yeah man we got 'em agin!"
Gene Harris was one of the greatest! Purest, gospel and blues infused jazz with great musicality. What a great trio: Ray Brown one of the truest masters of the bass, and Jeff Hamilton right there with them, sensitive to every breath of the music.
If I ever get a chance, I want to cover Summertime this way. Go from this soulful as hell version of it right into a badass blues chug. AW HELL YEEEAAAHHH!!!!
OMG I think I was there during that engagement, definitely my only time seeing Gene Harris, my all-time favorite pianist. Same arrangement but taken to the nth degree, like 3 or 4 peaks instead of 1, each higher than the last. Brought the house down, and then the house came down again when Ray looked at him and said "you keep playing that piano like that, it's gonna follow you home!"

@@dangould7679 Yes, numerous peaks.

@@dangould7679 These were moments you carry all through your life. Never I was so happy.
@ Did Ray use the same line afterwards? I have wanted to commission a drawing or graphic cartoon of Gene walking away from the Blue Note with a piano walking behind him saying, 'Uh, Mr. Harris, could you play me again?"

@@dangould7679 No, what I remember was Ray telling two funny stories. And also at one time, while playing, he looked at me in the eyes, as if he was telling me : "Hey boy ! You did not expect what is happening to you now." Never been happier in my life.
Actually what would be nice is to see maybe a demonstration on some of the licks in this tune, and or chordal riffs, so like a tutorial but not a full version, just to see how you play them.
Yeah , very funny vato, but Jeff is simply a bad assed drummer. I suppose if you played drums with Ray, it would be ,. what? two and 3/4 black, cuz you so brown? No, it wouldn't, cuz can't swing like Jeff Hamilton. I know that for sure. it would be 2 musicians, and a minus .5 musician , you . ¡Caudate ese! i saw jeff and this group in SFin the 90's. All bad The best- All 3 of them. Just simply the baddest.. Not brown or black or white.

Once in a while a video is captured of an INDESPENSIBLE MUSICAL HAPPENING. This is one of those gifts to mankind that will never be topped.
Non ho parole per descrivere questo spettacolo...! Jeff, Gene & Brown

How on Earth I haven't heard about this pianist before. Gene Harris is out of this World!
Ele foi um grande pianista da sua era. Procure no spotify vc vai curtir demais.
The late, great Gene Harris, bluesiest jazz pianist of 'em all, and positively brilliant always!
Amazing musician, I watched this clip many years and back on it again today.... Still amazing

Divinal. The best version I've ever eard.
Total game-changer for this pianist. Been listening to Gene Harris since 5th grade, and what an influence. This one the greatest, easy.
Fantastica sempre la versione piu bella di tutti i tempi
Monumental. Probabably the best version I've seen in years.
I heard this on 89.3 WPFW in DC for the first time..Long live jazz radio!

probably the best version of summertime i've ever heard. definitely a fine example of why singers aren't essential.

Ray brown has a great voice.
Preach, Brother Gene! Tell us all about it!!!
After I listen to this I feel SO good I feel like someone who has had a blood transfusion.
Gene Harris was the best. When I first heard this, years ago, well the song’s never been the same since.
This isn't just a song, this is an entire universe. 5,102 views?!! Well let's just keep this our little secret. Awesome, Thanks for posting.

We can all play it, but we should acknowledge that it is an artform created and pioneered by Black Americans.
he knows how to entertain a crowd for sure ! great stuff
