I was in the audience that night. I have never, before or since, experienced such a magical evening of jazz. Gene Harris was a powerhouse on the piano. And he left us way too soon!
One of the best jazz pianists !!! Gene Harris grooves and plays total piano like Oscar Peterson. His trio work is masterful as Oscar Peterson and soulful as Ramsey Lewis.
The story goes. that gene harris was in a town to play a gig and his piano didn't show. He went to a local piano shop and asked for a "loaner", but they weren't interested. He asked them to let him play a piano they had and he ripped into such a rif and badass song that the mgr came out and said "let him take it" because in hearing him play he was totally floored.
I'm a life long guitar player and like most guitar players, I love the blues. But if you asked me who do I want to listen to when it comes to playin the blues, Gene Harris would be my one and only pick.
He played with such Soul ---- his music was so much fun--- Gene is my favorite piano man --- thank you for the great funky soul ---RIP--- we still listen and love
Wow...brings back some great memories. Gene Harris was virtually living at the Idanha Hotel in downtown Boise back in the 80s. We used to hang out there, knocking back tequila shots, and listening to some great music.
Many years ago I was walking down the beach in Redondo when I heard divine jazz being played up the street at the Lighthouse. It was the Three Sounds with Gene wailing away on the piano. I then became a devotee' of Gene and have since acquired many cd's of his wonderful music. Gene, if there is a heaven, I know you are up there playing your swinging music. What a talent, what a man. Love you!!
Yo, Gene was one of a kind. Technically exact on the piano with the soul of the blues plus he was a great guy and a good father. Love his music. Gene, rest in peace brother you are sorely missed. Rango8
I was on the Dorsey Band in the 90's and played this for Lin Blaisdell (with headphones during a long hit & run) and he got up in the aisle of the bus and danced. Anyone who knows Lin will understand this....
This is art! If it wasn't, then there would be a million other good players playing groove-time like this or being little imitation Gene Harris's...but there aren't any! I think only 3 pianists have consistently played time this good-Errol Garner , Basie and Oscar Peterson (in his early years.)
Gene Harris. One of the truly greatest jazz musicians regardless of instrument to walk this earth. And John Heard on bass with the perfect lines walking and swingin'. To play with John is an honor that I've had many times and it only reinforces my belief that there is no substitute for just flat out swingin'. Enjoy.
I've got sheets if anyone is interested, because I did some transcriptions of Gene Harris Songs (Summertime, Black and Blue, The Song Is You)...gooogle for geniusharris and jimdo and you will find it :) youtube blocks the direct way, sorry
@@edshanaphy633 Nope. There aren't any sheets like these. People are very thankful to get a chance to learn these very precise interpretations of Gene Harris :)
Wow. I had no idea this was caught in video - I have the CD and I LOVE this number, one of the best ever hard-swinging piano workouts. And to see it being performed makes it even more exciting. Gene seems to almost explode with the intensity of the swing he generates! I have two major regrets in my musical life - one is that I never got to see Mel Tormé perform. The other is that I never saw Gene Harris live.

Professor Barnhart, thank you for the comment. My friends and I saw you at the Newport Jazz Party, which is our favorite event of the year. Next time, we will definitely introduce ourselves. Perhaps we can play together sometime!
@Rango8 the CD is called Live At Otter Crest and was released by Concord at the end of their life cycle - don't know if it's still in print but you should be able to find it via Amazon or Ebay.
Hi Superyou918, Thanks for the comment and I had fun playing at the Newport Jazz Party. I think I am supposed to be there again next year. It'd be a pleasure to play with you sometime. Just tell me when and where ;-)
The Sensational (and happy) Gene Harris! He was a superb artist. I have more than 12 Gene's CDs. He died prematurely (age 66). I (specially) recommend "The Gene Harris Quartet at Ste. Chapelle Winery" But I have a question: Does someone know... What brand is Gene's beer? Happy beer to you! (Funny thing to do at the piano).
I'm trying my best to be that player. Actually, I doubt any pianist is working as hard as I am to try to do exactly what Gene did. He's my favorite also, obviously.
I think you could easily put George Shearing and Earl "Fatha" Hines in this group and all it takes a little stroll through iTunes to confirm it. Just "sampling" their stuff is more than enough to recognize either of them could fit into this group.

Gene is a genius ever since he emerged over 30 years ago with The Three Sounds.

Lee Candiotti I liked and agree with what you said about Gene Harris. His music spoils me for most other jazz/blues artists

I had the pleasure of spending time with Gene while going through Boise. A real treasure and what an entertainer' GOD BLESS YOU GENE!!!

We really miss old good times where our fathers would get together on Sundays drinking and listening to wonderful blues
Gene harris swings furiously just digg it!
The difference between being a technician and simply just being born to feel.. Gene is a GOD..
ABSOLUTELY one of the best musicians that ever walked this planet !!
I was on the Dorsey Band in the 90's and played this for Lin Blaisdell (with headphones during a long hit & run) and he got up in the aisle of the bus and danced. Anyone who knows Lin will understand this....
His style was so funny and soulful. He was and is the best. Rip soulman thank you
Yksi svengaagvimmista blueseistä mitä olen kuullut, tai yleensä on soitettu.Kiitos soittajille.
Gene Harris!!!
Funkiest piano player ever.
Always been a favorite of mine since his Three Sounds Days ...... I see the reason why. Superb!
I was always amazed at his talent and the talent of the great players that worked with him.

you shouldn't charge for these in my opinion. Congrats on completing them however, they look pretty accurate
Thanks! So I shouldn't charge them? What am I telling my Kid ? "Sorry no food today, I work for free now" ? Time is money :)
Do you ever get any grief from the original publishers of the songs?
@@edshanaphy633 Nope. There aren't any sheets like these. People are very thankful to get a chance to learn these very precise interpretations of Gene Harris :)
For me, the guy that really "ties the room together" is John Heard. Keepin' 'em honest and tellin' it like it is.
It always catches me by surprise when this video so suddenly ends. I get caught up in the musical tidal wave every time.
For me He was the pianist I heard quite every day !!!!!
I bought the album a long time ago ... great to see a video of them playing.
The whole scene, everything, is FUN.

Wow! How come Ive never heard of this guy before. What a great sound.
Huge thanks for uploading this! Heard the tune on the radio tonight driving home and it knocked me out, and now I can see it happening live.
That hat with the suit and tie is a good look.
I'm a piano player but when I hear Harris, I ain't.
More!!!...I demand more.
Oh Gene! You are the best!
Only just come across this video. Superb!
My fav blues/jazz pianist
Thanks for the share! Hope someone younger than Billy Graham discovers him!

Heard him many times with The 3 Sounds in Detroit
A true great piano player !
A lot of thanks
Thank you for posting this video!!!

Miss and love you so much, Gene!
Just .... Superb!! Another great example of what jazz music really is.
Ahhh!! I LOVE THIS!
That is soooo cool!!
Lucky you! I never got a chance to see him. I regret that I didn't get into jazz until shortly after his death.
Professor Barnhart, thank you for the comment. My friends and I saw you at the Newport Jazz Party, which is our favorite event of the year. Next time, we will definitely introduce ourselves. Perhaps we can play together sometime!

Never thought anyone would woo me away from Oscar

Who says a piano on its own cannot swing? and then introduce a bass, the effect is hypnotic go to 2mins 08 secs.
Hi, Is there another pianist with a style like Gene Harris? Please, give me names. Thank You!
Ramsey Lewis, Sonny Clark and Ray Bryant spring to mind. Btw check out 'The Three Sounds' for Gene Harris's best work

Play that thang piano man! Whoot!
The Holy Three: Oscar Peterson, Jaki Byard and, of course, Gene Harris.
Hupsaaaaa
I like his style, very close to Wynton Kelly sens of swing.
I know he slept good after that jam
