Basie once said of Tatum, "He didn't like spaces." Meaning Tatum went 100 mph at all times. He was a master, but to 'accompany' a pianist like Tatum was a fool's errand. Tatum was at his best as a soloist.
Tatum is so good it's hard for most people to even appreciate what he is actually doing, and what level of musical understanding he played at. The only one remotely close, was Oscar Peterson.
Erroll Garner has that rare ability to be technically innovative and yet appeal to a wide audience. Bud Powell, the guy who out Dizzed Dizzie Gillespie and out Birded Yardbird Parker when be-bop ruled. Petrucciani and Camilo both display virtuosity and that x factor that captivates a wide audience. Music is not like sports where you score points to be the best. Music is totally subjective... styles, technique , articulation, interpretation, expression...
When people understand that music is not about speed and technique, it´s not a horse race, they will value some other pianists like Bill Evans, Clare Fischer, Michel Petruccianni and Makoto Ozone. When I was a teenager I valued too much speed. Oscar Peterson, Liszt and many other were my idols. Keith Jarrett is my all time favorite pianist. I don’t hear anyone even close to his brilliant playing. God was sure very kind to him to give him a genius mind.

How can anyone take such a list seriously if it omits Earl Hines? The man practically invented jazz piano, recorded with Louis Armstrong in his Hot Five/Hot Seven phase. There was no one as commanding, as assured. And you can see at least some video of him on RUclips.
Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson (whose playing I don't even like), Herbie Hancock (due to his prolific 1960s solo work, time with Miles and his early proflic 1970s funk work, chart hits, etc), Barry Harris (because he has been and still is the only pure bebop pianist left on the planet), Patrice Rushen, McCoy Tyner for his work with Trane, Hazel Scott, Phineas Newborn, Jr., particularly when he was younger.
I would say that comparing is really not possible for each jazz pianist has his/her own style and listeners have preferences. That being said, a real comparison would be all playing the same piece (arrangements could be different, of course) and playing with ONLY the piano and no other instruments. The one I know who made a couple of albums alone was Bill Evans. His "Alone" album is a masterpiece. His single of "Never Leave Me" is 14 minutes plus of fabulous!

Hiromi is technically perfect, very creative, and I ❤️ her energy and cuteness. But has she coined an entire new style of piano playing and influenced thousands of pianists over half a century like McCoy and Chick?
Les McCann, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis, Calvin Jackson, McCoy Tyner, George Shearing, Oscar Petersen, the French Bach guy, Johnny Gibson.
People, let's chill out. It's impossible to choose only 10 jazz pianists to represent the best in the history. There's an insane amount of absolute monsters in this instrument. This list is just his personal favourites. I would say you can pick the top 10 most influential list, but that would be a different list. Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Art Tatum, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, they all come to mind when I think of influence. But to say only 10 that are THE best is impossible. Too much greatness.
Since no one did, I'll mention Cecil Taylor. A better example of Ellington's piano playing would be, the album, Money Jungle with Charles Mingus and Max Roach. He never played that way before or after. One of the nice things about this list is that, if you read about these pianists, they will lead you to other pianists.
Hampton Hawes, Errol Garner, John Hicks, Kenny Barron, George Cables, Wynton Kelly and Cedar Walton all dwarf some of these names. Bud Powell the master and father of modern jazz piano missing from this list makes it a complete joke.
@@markhiggins8315, that was a wonderful band! I saw them at Yoshi's in Oakland, three days before drummer Danny Richmond died! Definitely one of my finest live music experiences! Hard to believe that was over 30 years ago! I loved George Adams' sound! Both he and Pullen were rather distinct.

If you haven't watched the entire clip of Caravan by Peterson (which this video shows the start of), you should. NHOP's bass solo is out of this world.
Kenny Barron -Mariam McPartland - are missing but to not have Bud Powell and Teddy Wilson invalidates your list! One modern guy needs a mention Brad Mehldau
Great list, but I would have put Mary Lou Williams in the mix before Duke Ellington. She was the creator of Jazz piano and the way it was played by a lot of/all the men listed.
James Booker was a technical marvel. More of a blues artist, but played jazz a lot. Wynton Kelly - very underrated. Was on half the Kind of Blue tracks. Red Garland. McCoy Tyner. Bud Powell.
This is a terrific video and an excellent list; just expand it to include Michel Camilo, Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Marian McPartland, and McCoy Tyner.
Hard to pick a top ten. All these musicians are awesome in their own right. Have to mention some of my favorites among those that are featured here. Joe Sample, Lyle Mays, Michael Petrucciani and last but not least the phenomenal Eliane Elias.

Bayu Tri Autumn Leaves
Good list. I have grown to appreciate Dave Brubeck more. His improvisational style was unique. Erroll was great also.
Clunky
it's impossible to name ten - good choices however - I'm wondering what my list would look like - IMPOSSIBLE!
*1. McCoy Tyner*
2. Chick Corea
3. Hiromi Uehara
4. Lyle Mays
5. Herbie Hancock
6. Keith Jarrett
7. George Duke
8. Mulgrew Miller
9. Bobo Stensson
10. Cedar Walton
Hiromi is technically perfect, very creative, and I ❤️ her energy and cuteness.
But has she coined an entire new style of piano playing and influenced thousands of pianists over half a century like McCoy and Chick?
@@alainverrier6125 Therefore she’s no. 3 in my list, higher than ‘giants’ like Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett. :)
I can't believe Michel Petrucciani is not there...
Denne samlingen er en liten gave for jazz piano elskere.Jeg takker av hele mitt hjerte!
Brynjar Hoff

Great choices, thanks for sharing. For myself, I'd include Dave Brubeck in there somewhere. Maybe stretch the list to 11? :-)
Very well-informed list, but let us not forget Hiromi , Gerri Allen and Renee Rosnes...xxx
Without Bud Powell, this list is incomplete.
Yes
4 more...Lyle Mays....Art Tatum...Bill Evans....Michael Petruciani. I would listen to any of these 10 Legends all day....any day!!
It is very good list ,that would agree with ,I would have added Dave Brubeck
Hampton Hawes, Errol Garner, John Hicks, Kenny Barron, George Cables, Wynton Kelly and Cedar Walton all dwarf some of these names. Bud Powell the master and father of modern jazz piano missing from this list makes it a complete joke.
I do like your taste!! I might add Don Pullen to those you list. Certainly several of my personal favorites!! Hicks!! Kelly and Walton.
@@jmichaelshort4160 Yes Don Pullen, fabulous player. I'm a tenor player and I loved Don's playing with George Adams. That was such an exiting band!
@@jmichaelshort4160 Although I've managed to catch a lot of the greats, I never got to hear that great band live. You're a lucky man. They must have been something else. Fantastic energy, for me that's what great music has to be about.
Beautiful, beautiful! I love all of this. Although... & I think we can all agree... The drummer in that first bit is feeling like "wtf am I doing w my life?"
Evans is best for me
If you haven't watched the entire clip of Caravan by Peterson (which this video shows the start of), you should. NHOP's bass solo is out of this world.
Kenny Barron -Mariam McPartland - are missing but to not have Bud Powell and Teddy Wilson invalidates your list!
One modern guy needs a mention
Brad Mehldau
Interesting that when attending college, Herbie Hancock was intent on being an engineer. Well, he did incorporate some of that in the recording area.
Very good selection :)
No one more fun to listen to than Fats Waller
How about Hiromi Euhara? She's a jazz pianist beast!
Bud Powell.
Top video!
You need two lists. The first one has only one name - Art Tatum. The second list has everybody else. Another monster stride player was Fats Waller.
So was James P. Johnson, don't forget Nat King Cole, and Bud Powell.
@@Magmen67 Nat King Cole was such an underrated pianist...I think he flew under the radar due to being a smooth vocalist
My top 10 in no order:
Thelonious Monk
Bill Evans
Wynton Kelly
Oscar Peterson
Barry Harris
McCoy Tyner
Chick Corea
Bud Powell
Herbie Hancock
Art Tatum
This is a terrific video and an excellent list; just expand it to include Michel Camilo, Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Marian McPartland, and McCoy Tyner.
And Erroll Garner and Bud Powell.
Michel Petrucianni, McCoy Tyner, Nat King Cole, Dave Brubeck, Bobby Timmons, Errol Garner, Nina Simone
Hard to pick a top ten. All these musicians are awesome in their own right. Have to mention some of my favorites among those that are featured here. Joe Sample, Lyle Mays, Michael Petrucciani and last but not least the phenomenal Eliane Elias.
@Henry Wimberly
Yes, especially his early works, The Rainbow Seeker and Carmel albums were uniquely and brilliantly inspired. Two masterpieces!
Love them all. And, I would add Peter Nero.
Good. I would put too Bud Powell, McCoy Tyner, Bob Timmons
The name is Bobby Timmons!
Bill Charlap would be one the fine living jazz pianists. Marcus Roberts also is a great artist with a deep understanding of the history behind the music.
