New Edition - Tender Love (1985) - The Song We ALMOST Got

- Опубликовано: 26 июл 2024
- Tender Love, written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis; performed by the Force MD's was initially to be recorded by New Edition.
Due to supposed contractual disagreements between New Edition's management, MCA records and Warner Bros., New Edition instead appeared in the Warner Bros. film Krush Groove and Force MD's would ultimately record the popular Billboard Hot 100 hit Tender Love. The simplistic and melodic love ballad would transcend generations and be a household song amongst R&B lovers. This video essay dives into the comparisons and parallel history between New Edition and the Force MD's, Krush Groove, details surrounding failed negotiations and Ralph's performance of Tender Love on the Home Again Tour.

Thank U My Brotha So So Much For Putting Us In The Loop...N.E. And The Force MD's Are Definitely Fam Fa'Life One Love Fa'Sho...
Thank YOU, you are an important part of R&B history too. When we talk about R&B groups we GOTTA talk about Troop. Ya’ll have been an inspiration to me and many other since y’all came onto the scene. I hope I can create something that revolves around your work or if one day we can chop it up on a podcast that’d be great. New Edition are not the only ones with stories that need to be heard!
I am definitely in agreance as a fan that you guys have made a BIG contribution to the original generation and following generations of Troop fans the blueprint that NE set in your own unique style.
You pretty much said everything I was thinking!!
Gosh, Ralph voice was made for that song.
I think FMD was the right call for Tender Love, because that song is so friggin beautifully sung by them.
I gotta say I like that New Edition ended up with Helplessly in love it fit better for them. Tender Love was made for the Force Mds. First time I heard it as a teen was before the movie even hit the theatre. Everyone was mesmerized by how good the song was and the force Mds sang it. The right group got the song. The Force Mds voices more like the Stylistics and the Moments it definitely fit better for Tender love.
Much better fit
Ralph would have killed this.
Actually, I do remember when The Force MD's were asked to tone down their performance since they were the opening act for New Edition. They could dance, break dance and would do flips on stage while performing. Their show was more energetic but New Edition was more popular.
I love new edition but that song went to the right group
I love NE, but I don't think anyone sang this song better than Force MDs
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯it definitely belongs to Force MDS. No one can do it better. 💙💙💙💙💙
They should’ve let Ralph sing the whole song. That makes sense because NE is from Boston and everybody in Krush Groove is from NY. They are the only ones not from New York. Good story bro, I’m loving these videos keep it up!
Soons I saw the title I thought “damn I could hear Ralph killing this song.” And sure enough, we got a small clip of him doing that. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis though, true legends.
I went to a force mds concert I can't remember if it was when they were touring with new edition but I do remember they put on a hell of a show I remember Trisco doing a backflip off a speaker and then doing the splits it was a hell of a show. I remember being surprised as hell when Trisco started singing because he had so much power in his voice. RIP to the members who have passed on I hate I only got to go to that one concert 🤦🏾♂️
The songwriters (Jam & Lewis) got it right by allowing Force MDs to sing their material/song.
NE is good but I don't think they could out do Force MD's performance.
Man i wish Ralph T had finished the song. He was killing it. ❤
Tender Love always gave me a Ralph Tresvant song.
The right group got that song.
More mature voices.
Force MD's was the right call. I can't see anyone else singing that song and I love New Edition
Hopelessly In Love is one of my favorite NE songs that does not get enough recognition.
Definately agree. I remember when that song was released in 87 from the Dragnet soundtrack. That was the pre-qual to Jam/Lewis production of NE. One of my favs.
I agree… My son heard it at 6 years old,and he was blown away… Another underrated song would be NE “Baby Love”
Helplessly* in Love ❤❤❤
It’s no surprise hearing them rock this on the Home Again Tour! That’s not a New Edition song but really it is, Mr. Devoe!
I agree the song may have been more popular if New Edition would’ve sang it. It also would be Pop as well as R&B with Ralph’s voice
The song went to #10 on the pop charts and #4 on the R&B charts and #2 on the Adult Contemporary Charts in 1985. New Edition's Count Me Out went as high as #51 on the Pop Charts the same year.
Count Me Out is nowhere near the same league as Tender Love. Count Me Out was a clear rinse-and-repeat of Cool It Now, I still think the song is great but even New Edition were ready to move on from that sound. It’s performance on the charts reflects that.
NE would have sold more if this was their song but only because they had a bigger machine behind them
New Edition at that time was going through a transition. I don't think it would have gone as high. They had several songs prior to that didn't fair well. One is Earth Angel from the Karate Kid soundtrack. Nice version but a minor success. Force brought in a fresh sound that was reminiscent of the doo-wop days. The right group got the right song.
Anytime I do 80s R/B ballad playlists, I always put "Can You Stand the Rain" next to "Tender Love" as in my mind they are spiritual and musical equals. I had no idea the 2 different groups were connected as friends/touring mates, and I certainly didn't know New Edition almost recorded "Tender Love". Thanks for the info!
Can You Stand the Rain is not Tender Lover's equivalent tho -- it's actually NE's Helplessly in Love, that was also written & and produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis ❤❤❤
The song was written watching a clip. They had no idea who would sing it. If I’m correct they hadn’t worked with Jam and Lewis yet. Force MDs recorded the song in a night and the rest is history.
Love these videos man. You’re one of the only ones on RUclips that touches on all things NE and 80s/90s R&B with the layers and richness the culture really has. Thank you for what you do man
I appreciate the comment bro, yeah I make the NE content that I myself would want to watch. Especially the stories that are not commonly known. NE are the GOATs so it’s necessary. And thank you for watching/commenting it means a lot my man!
I think that the Force MD's still would have sang it better...TCD's voice was mesmerizing..along with the harmonizing from the rest of the group..the original song couldn't be touched
I agree the Force were the better singers . Love NE but the song went to the right group.
I remember Jimmy and Terry talking about the song in another interview...I think that it was better that force mds sang it.T.c voice leading and the rest of the group harmonizing is iconic and I can't think of the song any other way.But it would have been great to see Ne version seeing how Ralph would have sang the lead part. But I don't think they would have pulled off singing that song at that period in time. It would have sounded bubble gum.unlike if they recorded it in the Ne heartbreak or home again days were their voices were more mature and they had Johnny.I hope one day the force mds get a movie on their lifes
I wish todays RnB would go back to making love songs like this.
These songs make you fall in love and want to hold your partner
It feels like most of today’s music has lost this sensualism
Classic from my Yout dayz can't imagine anyone else singing it str8 up !
Tender love this is unbelievable story with for Cindy New Edition parodies of the group D and F this is amazing the truth behind Tender Love
Wow!!! I had no idea. It would’ve been dope if New Edition had done the song however, I don’t think the world would’ve been ready for it. They had such a young and squeaky clean image before 1989. I think that fans would’ve found the song to be too mature for them. It may have backfired. Force MDs were perfect because they had the right image and age range targeted Fan base.
Force MDs . This was destined to be their song!! Love new edition but they had a run and tender love could have been pushed under the rug under can you stand the rain and other hits. Force Mds gave this their all and deserve no other comparison. It was their shot and jimmy and Terry saw it right away.
What Stevie D said was true. The Force MD’s outshined NE on that tour. They put on a great show that was never seen before mixing R&B/Hip Hop. All five members were talented. This was the time where NE only had 4 members. Bobby brown was gone and Johnny Gill hadn’t yet joined the group. Ralph and Ricky on vocals was all they had. NE still held their own but the Force MFs gave a SHOW.
they should have got it because when I first heard it I was thinking of a young person not grown a*s men seriously, but I like Force MDs and they did a good job!!!
I’m From Boston So Automatically and I am With The Home Team NEW EDITION!!!!! Yet Both FORCE M.D’s And New Edition Are My Favorite Boy Groups of The 80’s!!!
Shit let him finish I was waiting for that high pitch 😂😂😂
Nice Clip, But: The Force MDs got that song because it was a love making song/a mature group song. Also, the Force MD's got that song because it was a Tommy Boy/Russell Simmons project. New Edition's management team was not trying to portray New Edition as that mature and advanced in age and experience at the time.
A lot of people don't remember that The Force MDs and New Edition were the first musical entities in all of R&B, Hip Hop and Pop to really legitimately blend R&B, Hip and Hop and Pop music. They also got radio airplay for those songs at a time when rap music was not being played on the radio especially on Pop radio stations (with the exception of Blondie doing a faux rap on "Rapture'). The Force MDs in those days were a tighter performance group in both singing (harmonies and lead vocals) and dancing (gymnastics inspired dance routines). New Edition in 1982 and 1983 did not have the strong lead vocals and vocal group harmonies. The New Edition did not even sing background vocals with the exception of "Pass The Beat" on their debut 'Candy Girl" album. That really began later with the "The New Edition" Album, the first album for MCA. "Heart Break" and 'Home Again" really shows the peak of their vocal polish (both with lead vocals and background harmonies) in its' best light (or sound). The New Edition has always been a great dancing group and tight performance group with great showmanship. Their best performances are Soul Train (The Kind of Girls We Like), American Bandstand second appearance (Mr. Telephone Man in suits), any Arsenio Hall Performance (solo or group) and The MTV Music Award Reunion Performance. Vocally, in the early days, they were still trying to find their voice especially during the stage when their voices were changing during puberty. (Even "The New Edition Story" stated that in the scene where New Edition had to sing in their first audition for Jheryl Busby.) I can say these things because I was there at many of the New York City shows they performed in. Empire Roller Disco skating ring on Empire Blvd across the street from my house in Brooklyn was one of the first New Edition and Force MDs performance spots. That venue had a lot of R&B and Hip Hop artists. One last bit of trivia, the reason why many Hip Hop acts toured or performed in the same show as The New Edition and The Force MDs because since Rap was a new street music form in the 70s and the 80s, promoters could not get rap acts booked at local venues. Venue owners refused to book rap shows in fear of the music' "street nature" luring gang members to show up and start beefing or fighting with each other and harm the reputation of that venue. So show promoters had to get creative and split the show's artist billing to a blend of mostly R&B singers or groups with a small amount of BB Hip Hop rap artists. That way a diverse audience would show up.
I appreciate your comment. Would you by any chance have caught wind of the story/article that New Edition were initially going to open for the Jacksons on the Victory Tour? I remember reading an article about that a couple of years ago; I haven’t been able to find the source. I’m trying to confirm if it’s actually true or not, though I haven’t heard about that on the MJ side of things.
@@misterDjayMDJ Never heard of this so take this with a grain of salt, but if they were going to open for the jacksons it could’ve been on the canceled european leg of the tour that would’ve led into 1985. The singles from the self titled album started dropping in late 1984 so they had a lot of momentum carrying into 1985, they toured pretty much that whole year if I remember correctly.
Yeah it was years ago when I first read that article, and it implied that New Edition managers were the ones who blocked it from happening because of money. Lol, when I think of this story it’s like I’ve seen a ghost. Nobody else has seen or heard of it either lol.
Don't forget The Sequence (Cheryl The Pearl, Blondie, and Angie B aka Angie Stone) who came out in 1979 and legitimately blended rap with R&B as well as UTFO & Whistle.
Full FORCE blended Hip-hop and R&B as well
And another thing Ralph with a blue the hell out of this song just hearing him doing it live was wild
I never knew this, great video bro as always 🔥
Rip Jessie Lee Daniel's
It would have been just as bad and hot as "force MDs" recording it, Ralph had that falsetto to carry it but I absolute Love it!!!!!💜
Great piece. I am a Big Fan of the Force M.D.’s. and I have the utmost respect for Ralph Tresvant. Your comments regarding Jesse D (RIP) at the end I am in agreement with 100 percent. TCD’s (RIP) voice was magic too.
I appreciate your comment and you watching, thank you 🙏🏾
Wow. I have sung with troop, climax, and ready for the world. I never knew this!!!
Ralph have that thing you just can't explain! I should know because I was nuts over him!
Thank you for this video. People don’t know how great these groups were! New Edition & Force MDs could have been the Temptations & the Four Tops of generation X!
I remember attending the tour in 86 that featured Cherelle opening, followed by Force and NE. As a NE fan, Force blew the hinges off NE. Remembering that was the time when Bobby had left the group and it was just the four of them. It was an excellent show from both but as another comment stated, Trisco was doing back flips off the speakers, the group's choreography was airtight, Jesse was doing his MJ tribute and they were doing magic tricks. I still have the ticket stub. And yes, I remember the reports at that time threats were made to the Force they would be kicked off the tour if they didn't tone down. As someone that watched it at the Capital Centre, I can believe it.
I remember seeing Force MDs open for NE. Force MDs most definitely held it down. I was blown away. NE is the coldest but FMD was a force to be reckoned with.
New Edition did do a very similar song called "helplessly in Love" for the Movie Dragnet
It worked out for the best because the Force MDs were truly the better singing group.of the two . The Force can sing even without background vocal tracks.
If Ralph dropped a Tenser Love remake it would be top 10 in a week. Ain’t many voices ever that could touch RT on a well written ballad.
Love New Edition. I Love The Force MD's too. I wish there was footage available of a full live concert when they were in their prime.
In some alternate universe this IS an NE song!! ;-)
But they did come back and do Helplessly in Love which was a jam too! Peace!
It was NE's answer to Tender Love
Partial truth … a soundtrack with a artist is a for hire… Jam & Lewis wrote and produced the song all publishing goes to them. The Force MDs were supposed to be in the movie but Russell Simmons went and with New Edition not Warner Bros.. Monica Lynch (Tommy Boy) called in a favor and TC, Jessie and Trisco flew out to Minneapolis and knocked out the lead and background vocals in two hours.. .. The craziest thing was Warner bros only did a limited pressing of the soundtrack.. It was because of the Force Mds that Warner/Reprise records distributed Tommy Boy..New Edition signed to Jump and Shoot but MCA pulled all the strings never allowed NE to appear on other label projects..Every soundtrack they were on was MCA..
I love learning about these
I appreciate you watching, hope you’ll subscribe and check out some more content on the channel! 🙏🏾
Thanks for your work on this story. Always loved the song. Nice to see both groups discussed. Didn't know only Stevie D is still alive. We are blessed to have all members of New Edition in all of its iterations still with us and still performing. Not many groups are that blessed.
I appreciate your hard work and your enthusiasm regarding the job as a music historian! 🎶 I didn't realize the backstory because it seems like things were going fast then! This is so comforting to be able to piece things ❤️ together, so it makes this part of our history self-explanatory! I cherish both of these groups! Thanks again! Shout out to you for being one of the dancers!
WHAT IF NEW EDITION GOT TENDER LOVE??? HOLY S***!!!!! NEW EDITION WOULD BE UNGODLY TODAY.
They are ungodly regardless, greatest group Ever ❤️❤️❤️
Great video! I didn't know this and I'm a NE fan! Tender Love was definitely made for the Force MD's. In my opinion if NE had it Ricky should have sung it.
This is an unbelievable hidden secret New Edition and force MD Tender Love are always thought they was New Edition this is an unbelievable story the things you will find out about Owen be back in the day
I LOVE YOUR INTRO IT WAS SUCH A TEASE!!!!! LIKED & SUBSCRIBED!!!👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thanks alot my brotha! I appreciate it 🙏
@@misterDjayMDJ I enjoy your perspective on this. I’ll say this. History has shown us unequivocally that New Edition is the undisputed R&B supergroup that has lasted 40 years! No one even comes close to their achievements and accomplishments as both a group and solo artists. However, because I understand industry politics, the argument for the Force MD’s can always be made that because they were stuck on an independent hip hop label in Tommy Boy Records, they were never able to get the right kind of music, marketing and promotions afforded to New Edition after they left StreetWize Records for a a major label in MCA Records. To me, this fact has to be taken into consideration when doing the history of these two amazing groups. Disclaimer, I’m 52 years old from Harlem New York City so I was there from the beginning and had both the Candy Girl album and the Love Letters album in 1983 and 1984. Truthfully, pound for pound, it’s really hard to say what album was better. Obviously, the FMD’s had a more mature sound than NE due to the age difference between the two groups. Tears, Forgive Me Girl and Let Me Love You are classic jams of the era! However it might be true to say that Candy Girl, (for sure) Popcorn Love, Is This The End, and Jealous Girl were bigger hits even though they both were on independent labels from the beginning. In the final analysis, though the Force MD’s were extremely talented, they were not magical. New Edition had a special quality and symmetry that I believe was absent from the FMD’s even though they are family! We’ll never know what the Force MD’s could have become with better material and promotions but New Edition is a machine that is still going strong. Everybody was on drugs and alcohol in those groups but NE was just built to last! One Love to both groups! Both are legends in my book!📕 🎶
Keep doing these Docs bro. Definitely feeling them. Thank you
Thank you brother, I appreciate the positive feedback. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
While I agree that force MDs made this song 🔥 when I first heard Ralph sing it here in this video…I was like Lawddd 🥰🥰🥰
Itching for a scratch was and important early hip-hop joint...tender love was a good balance for then to have...the formula worked for B-boys in the 80s
Thanks! Very nostalgic
Your welcome thanks for watching
Yep Tender Love, would've been a perfect fit for NE but J&L really felt that it would go to Force MDS.
Then it appeared on the Krush Groove soundtrack.
I hope NE records the song in the future.
Wonderful video! 👏 Your content is always so great! 👍
I woke up to your comments this morning, thank you I really appreciate that you enjoy the videos! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Nice video👍👍👍
Interesting. Good video.
Off to watch tender love
I can see Ricky bell leading that song
Why didn't Bobby & Ralph just redo the albums just update the album for the current times
New Edition's 1st collaboration with Jimmy Jam and Terry was a song called Helplessly in Love from the movie soundtrack Dragnet
Correct, bc Ralph couldn't get over not getting it after it came out, in true Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis fashion of actually LISTENING to their artists (which is how & why we got the Control album from Janet), they wrote Helplessly in Love for NE to basically answer Tender Love & to satisfy Ralph's playful disheartenedment of loosing out on recording it ❤
Jump and Shoot logo 🤣
LMFAO that really should’ve been the logo with how much they stole
Crazy
You know as a true New edition fan I thought this was New edition until I seen the video and it was the force MD's
'Tender Love' could've been a New Edition song??? I love this song, been listening to this song since I first heard it back then, can't member when but it's decades ago.
It was made FOR New Edition, but bc they couldn't be in 2 places at once, they appeared in Krush Groove, and Tender Love was given to the Force MD's to record.
NE's answer to the song was Helplessly in Love ❤❤❤
Force MDs killed that Song !!!!!
It would’ve been cool to hear NE sing that song… “Hopelessly in love” showed Ralphs talents… My favorite NE song has to be the upbeat “ Baby Love”…. For those who don’t know,NE and 5 Star recorded the same song “ Hide and Seek”.
We need a Force MD'S biopic ........
They have a TV One Unsung episode.
I agree 👍🏿#facts💯
Nice video bro
Thanks for watching my man 🙏🏾
@@misterDjayMDJ Np bro
💥💥💥JUST SUBSCRIBED!!!!💥💥💥
It wouldn't be the last time MCA and Warner had disagreements.
Great job dawg --- I'm taking this as fact! Hope you don't prove me wrong, kid!
#much❤
#each1teach1
It's true about what he said about Jesse D at the end, he would have been quite a force, however according to their UNSUNG, he got caught up in drugs, and ended up in jail at some point, but back then they just said he went solo, and it was believable because Bobby got kicked out of New Edition around the same time and New Edition said he went solo. Thank God for each group's brotherhood, that they chose to not embarrass their fallen members.
New Edition should have covered "Tender love" on a later album. In the 60's, that was common.
Back in 1985 New Edition and a group called 5 Star recorded the same song “ Hide and seek”
I disagree.
1 + 1 sounds like it could have been written for New Edition
This song would’ve been so much greater with NE singing it
Bro you right "that statement was asinine"😂😂
Outshining New edition from what I seen as a kid screams from so loud from the girls you couldn't even hear them at first this is all CAP
How they all died like that .. wow
New Edition did follow Force MD during the "All 4love tour."
Aye Bro what’s that song in the background
That's cool. But it started off with the Force MD'S being as big as New Edition, yet I have never heard of these guys before. Or the song for that matter. Big NE fan, been since I was a kid.
Force MD’s were not as big as New Edition. That’s why they were always the opening act for New Edition concert tours. Some people would imply that [at the time] they were more talented and [at times] outshined NE on stage. Nowhere in the video is it said that the Force MD’s were “as big as New Edition”.
@@misterDjayMDJ True but if there were any group that could rival NE back then were Force and Troop.
Which track is that playing in the background of the commentary?
The force mds still were in the movie
Eh. I think it worked out for the best. At the time, NE was too young and too ripe to pull off "Tender Love" as well as Force MD's did.
Ralph would’ve killed it singing lead on Tender Love! Damn!
He killed Helplessly in Love tho, so we actually got the best of both worlds with the decisions that were made ❤
The thought that Force md’s outshined NE isn’t that “asinine” especially when the clip you showed let us see how good dancers they were.
Also Ralph couldn’t have carried Tender Love the way Force md’s did.
Good stuff though!💪🏾
What points do the Force MD’s, who were already in their early/mid twenties; get for “outshining” a group that ranged from 15-18? Yeah it is an asinine conversation that’s only being had because he/they felt outshined back in the day. New Edition was way more popular than the Force MD’s, they sold way more records and were the headliners on their tours every single time they toured with them. From all the Force MD’s choreography I’ve seen from that time; there’s nothing cutting-edge about it and it’s easy to learn. Notice how Stevie D said “not the now New Edition” because Heart Break era(in their twenties) NE smokes them on any stage. Like I said, his statement was opinionated, not factual. But there’s no disputing the facts I just gave you.
Let’s not pretend the Force MD’s were Boyz II Men lmao. They weren’t the vocal juggernaut that you’re implying. They’re not. Because if they were, they would’ve had serious longevity in this industry like NE, Boyz II Men. The Force MD’s pound for pound don’t measure up to NE at all no matter how y’all try to spin it. Keep giving me your opinions, I’m going to give you the facts. Tender Love was more popular than the group. The remaining members weren’t even invited to perform the song at the Soul Train Awards years ago. Y’all heard me give the members their just due, leave it at that.
This conversation about who “outshined” who was about performance not vocals. I’m not sure where you got that from because there’s no disputing that Force MD’s were the stronger vocal group. These conversations like I said are asinine lmao. You didn’t once see or hear me say that NE was a better vocal group.
“I’m the one” what? David Ashley said something and my response was relevant to what he said. Your response had my name on it, not his. And what you said had nothing to do with what I said. Y’all soliciting my conversation not the other way around. Force MD’s are talented, so are New Edition. People are allowed to have contrasting opinions. Whatever I say about the two are facts, anything beyond that is ASININE. It’s not going to go anywhere and my goal isn’t to change anyone’s mind. We’re not going to go back and forth about it either.
I’m waiting for you to point out when/where I said otherwise lol. I gave the group their just due for the song’s quality and success. I called it timeless and specifically pointed out T.C for his vocals on the song. Where are you going with what you’re saying? What’s the goal? Because no one disagrees with you as far as that is concerned. You got one more sir.
I’m a huge new edition fan from back in the day, but they couldn’t do Tender Love like Force MDs. TC was a far superior vocalist to everyone in NE.
TC for the force Mds was no slouch and was more like a hip hop version of Smokey Robinson. TC sang with more technique than Ralph Tresvant.
I believe the first song I heard by the Force MD’s was ‘Tears’. TC was the main lead on that song. ‘Tears’ did sound a little like a Smokey Robinson & the Miracles song done in the late 60’s. I think both New Edition and the Force MD’s were awesome groups. Sad that the Force MD’s are no longer living.
@@andrewcrawford4635 They both were super the force Mds was just a more grown up version of New Edition or you might say New Edition was a younger version of the force MDs. They both sang, rapped, and dance. New Edition music grew up as they grew up and more noticeably when Johnny Gill came to the group with the single can you stand the rain. The Force MDs had the single Love is a house that was already drawing the older crowd to the up and coming hip hop r&b sound that they were pioneering.
