    I have a situation that has been driving me nuts for months. All my USB ports are working and when I plug in some devices like a wireless mouse & keyboard or a flash drive, no problem, my PC detects them and they work fine. The problem only comes when I plug in my webcam. The power light is lit on my camera but the device manager doesn't detect my camera. I often have to scan for changes or unplug and plug again into the port until my PC detects the camera. I have updated drivers and even bought a new webcam, thinking my old one was faulty, but it still happens. Any ideas?

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад

      so if I heard you correctly, you bought an entirely *different* webcam and you have the same problem? That eliminates the webcam as the culprit ....*unless* it's a USB 3.0 only webcam - I can see where that would cause some issues. It's also possible you have some Windows file corruption ...could be causing issues with USB ports being recognized or acting properly. I'd run sfc /scannow from a command prompt to verify that first.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад

      Not a bad approach. I generally find that apps are the least likely culprits, but in the end, it all has to be done. Don't have much experience with Glary, will have to check it out 💪

    Can't find a vid on my issue in your livre, so here goes...Wanted to check health of my SSD drive (4 years old and works fine), so I used Seatools and CrystalDisk. Ran all 4 for Seatools tests...said the SSD was fine. CrystalDisk gave me a 0% health score with ID 5 %used =C6, and told me to replace it. Which can I trust? I am a casual user, not gaming, just youtube/streaming/general internet. Thanks

      Sounds like your Windows has somehow gotten corrupted. I would boot to a Windows install disc so you can access the troubleshooting menus you need, including reset, which will replace the damaged Windows. Here's how yo get those install discs if you need them:

    Good information for the average PC user. I also understand this video was made to help this average user. With this said I want to switch gears and add something I wrote a while back in the thumb drives video. It is a solution to a problem that you really should not be having. Before I started typing this comment I looked at my desktops drive C properties. I have a 500 GB NVMe drive. I am only using 57.3 GB and have 407 GB free. This is because I don't store data on that drive. I can't stress this point hard enough! Please, I am begging you DO NOT store data on the same drive the PCs OS is on. You can get 4TB platter drives these days relatively cheaply. Almost all desktops have an empty space for one as well as an extra SATA connection and a free power plug. This past weekend one of the paralegals that work for my GF told me her laptop HD is almost full. I invited her over to my apartment and the three of us enjoyed a meal while I installed a HD caddy on her laptop. I removed the optical drive and placed the caddy in that space. I then copied all of her data to that new 2TB drive and reinstalled her OS back on the old drive. The problem was solved and gave her 2TB of storage space in addition. She had to reinstall most of her programs but was happy with her "new" laptop. I then took the optical drive and placed it in an enclosure that will plug into a USB if she ever needs to use it again. Also removing the data off the drive with the OS helps greatly during a recovery situation if drive C fails.
    I understand I sound critical of this video. It is not my intention. I am just pointing out that saving a few GB here and there over time in my opinion is not a good solution. Adding storage is a better way to fix this problem. Also, I want to add there is no right way or wrong way to fix some issues that come up with PCs. I still debate with my GF about what is better, to keep the system up all the time or shut it down after use. (smiles)

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад +2

      Not critical at all, you are correct. I'm actually working on a video showing people how to partition their drive, use the secondary as storage and how to relocate your libraries to the second partition. This frees up the C drive to easily be wiped and reloaded with no chance of data loss. Thx for your comment :)

      @@AskYourComputerGuy I guess we can discuss this in an open forum and discuss the good points of how to safeguard important data. I am going to respectfully disagree with you on this part. I understand your point and agree this will work to a degree. My point is to keep the data on a different drive altogether. Case in point. My Executive Assistant bought a cheap ASUS laptop back in 2015. It had a platter 1TB drive. It was partitioned into 2 parts from the factory. One day she brought it to work and I was talking to her about it. She was storing photos and some PDFs on it. Anyway after about a year the drive started to fail and the laptop was giving no OS present error messages. Thankfully I was able to save her data. (tossed the drive in my freezer overnight) Don't laugh it does work! I know I am dancing around your intentions with this channel and know most likely I am being a PITA. To be honest your position is OK provided people take the time to back up. Sadly most don't. Also, I must admit drives are much better these days than when they were 15 years ago. Still, I don't trust drives. I have seen new drives fail within minutes. Another thing is >1TB drives are getting within most people's budgets these days. I also understand some laptops these days don't come with optical drives. This might present a problem with adding a 2nd drive on a laptop. In this situation, I would recommend partitioning and developing a backup system. This is why I took the time to refurbish my Dell Latitude 3540. I was lucky to find a replacement MB and palm rest.

      Fair points, your objection is noted. My "don't save your files to C" video will take this subject into great detail on not only how, but WHY, which I think is the most important thing!

    Sir, I have recently developed a problem in my c drive (win 11)..... No matter how much I free up my storage or even after changing the location for downloads, on rebooting it fills up automatically. Once after a windows update it went form 46 GB free to 10 GB free! • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  9 месяцев назад

      Here's a good rule of thumb. If you recognize it AND you installed it, it's safe to delete. If you recognize it but don't remember installing it, it's *probably* ok to remove it. If you don't recognize it at all, it either shouldn't be removed (like a driver package) or it might be malicious, in which case you should run MalwareBytes to remove it. Sort by installed date and that will help. The longer something has been installed with no issues, generally the safer you are :)

      CCleaner does have value as a disk cleanup utility, but only that. WinDirStat is great for showing where the files are, but doesn't do enough to tell you if they are safe to delete. CCleaner does have value in that way

    Please don't recmmend ccleaner. In late 2017, security researchers from the Cisco Talos group reported that version 5.33 of 32-bit CCleaner contained a virus delivery system. CCleaner is no longer safe to use

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for your kind words. Actually I was just reading an article about this very subject. It seems that many of the security concerns were not long after Ccleaner was acquired by Avast, and Avast was quick to react. I agree that using the "full suite" (driver updaters, etc) is probably not a good idea and can likely cause users more headache...I personally only use CCleaner for the temp file cleanup and registry cleanup. I've never, in all my years, had ANY issue on ANY machine using just these two utilities. And then I promptly uninstall the program when done.
      Here's the article..it's a decent, thorough read: cybernews.com/privacy-tools/ccleaner-review/
