This was right around the time the Buffalo Bills started to decline. After starting 7-4 in 1983 they ended up winning only 7 of their next 46 games until Marv Levy took over halfway through the 1986 season.

This was the first of two 49ers wins at Buffalo.
Next year, they can add a third.

This was the only Bill Walsh Joe Montana era 49ers game in Buffalo. As a matter of fact, this was the only 49ers AT Bills game from 1972 to 1998. Every other one was played at the Stick. 80 (Bills clinch AFC East), 89, 92 (the no punt classic), & 95.

The only team that played less often at Buffalo was Tampa Bay. The first 8 meetings between those teams were all at Tampa -- 1976, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1991, 2000, and 2005. The Bucs finally played at Buffalo in 2009 and again in 2017.
I don't understand why Buffalo had to play at SF in 1995. I assume it had to do with Carolina joining the NFC West that season (they played at Buffalo) and the schedule formula getting tweaked from the one that prevailed from 1978 through 1994. During that period, there were 4 divisions with 5 teams each, and all 5th place teams played each other. The Bills and Bucs played so-called "5th place schedules" in 1978 and 1986, which is why the Bills played at Tampa. If they'd both had 5th place schedules in odd-numbered years, they'd have played at Buffalo in those seasons. They also missed each other in 1979, 1985, and 1994, which were AFC East vs. NFC Central seasons, because one team or the other played a 5th place schedule (Tampa in '79 and '94, and Buffalo in '85).

John Manier yep. TB did play at Buf in the 1977 preseason for what it's worth.
Buffalo played the Chargers 0 times from 1986-97.

SPOILERS Great game - better than I expected. Also, a weird game - had an untypical feel to it. Perhaps because these two teams so rarely play each other. But lots of notable things: neither team dominating until near the end - score lead going back and forth, Special Teams on both sides at times fantastic and at times horrible - both had big plays with big returns and big stops but also 2 Bills strip-fumble-takeaways by the 49ers on 2 consecutive kick returns with only a 3-and-out in between (never seen that before, and probably never will again!), Montana sacked 5 times and that last one might be Joe's worst fumble loss of yards as he evaded running backwards twice after an initial 5 step drop - resulting in a 19 yard loss making it 2nd and 29. Big runs by Joe Cribbs. Dwight Clark brawling and pissed off all game. Both bad and very good throws by Joe Ferguson (overall - impressive!). Lots of 49er drops and slips on the Bill's slippery Astroturf (literal home FIELD advantage). Big time hits by both sides. (Great Riki Ellison slam on Joe Cribbs, knocking his helmet off - best Ellison tackle on film?) Very physical game. Finally a great Fred Dean sack (great camerawork on the replay). Lott lighting it up with INT's (one on a great 49er goal line stand on 4th down) and a huge hit. Both kickers missing FG's. Too many penalties. Old, round helmets. Really dynamic, fun game - both frustrating and exhilarating at times.
