    The reason the Baron says the artillery is brilliant is because in this time period it’s an ancient obscure weapon. Everyone has shields so artillery shells are literally useless. But on Dune where shields are impractical due to the worms, it’s was akin to Feyd digging up an ancient weapon and using it to full force.

    • @Solsev
      @Solsev 2 месяца назад +3

      @Valintynee so prior to this film I was wholly unaware of the "IMAX vs LieMAX" differences, which largely boil down to the overall size of the screen, amongst other differences in clarity and sound. We have a LieMAX, so I think if you're lucky enough to be near a theater that has true IMAX, I say go for it. For me they were about the same, but the Ultrascreen at Marcus was the better experience because of the modern plushy recliner-seating, vs the older highback, stadium-seating of our local Liemax, which is still relatively common for these establishments. It's a long enough film that you notice the difference. I didn't personally notice the difference in aspect ratio, I was kind of blown away by both. The LieMAX had more of an even filling of your view, but was roughly 60x30ft, our local Ultrascreen is roughly 70x30ft, so also massive but in a more traditional wider format, and with better seating. In all honesty though, I could watch this film on my phone and be totally engaged.

I interpreted Feyd having a similar speech to the Baron as him trying to imitate him, to get into his good graces. It’s such a messed up dynamic between the two that this just fits logically to me. They’re obsessed with each other-The Baron is in love with Feyd while Feyd loathes the Baron but also has some Stockholm love/admiration for him too.

    I was surprised how much they bent the movie over backwards to express how bad the prophecy and the path Paul ultimately goes down is and not only nakes it work but honestly enhances the whole story. The tragedy of Paul is in his effort to be good, loving, AND honor bound, he avoids what the big picture “best” path is. He rallies against what is called his “Terrible Purpose”, yet he stumbles into it anyway. Then, in order to save those he cares for most, he takes charge of that purpose before it’s too late (it kind of already is) and becomes the thing he fought against the whole time- all for love and honor.

      I think that's a pretty good analysis, I'd add that what Paul (and what Leto ll would come to call the "Golden Path) did following the ending of Dune 2 was a demonstration that even those who claim to hold power are still beholden to the will of those around them. Shaddam lV's powers as Emperor really only extend to the limit to which the Guild's allow him. Like wise with Paul, even though a lot of time is spend establishing that only he can see the clear path forward, the fanatic legions of Fremen warriors essentially force his hand into battle as he recognises that the Fremen have had their taste of blood and WILL continue with or without Paul.

    I like that the action scenes including the rout of the Emperor’s forces are not drawn out, sparing budget that would have gone to lots of expensive additional special effects. And also extending the runtime for yet another been there done that epic, mind-numbing battle. I also love that they took it inside, as you could see the Emperor and company’s anxious and uncertain fear.
    This also gave room to the other scenes centering on politics, religion, romance, culture, history, and contemplation-allowing these scenes to breathe. And perfectly do world creation worthy of Frank Herbert’s vision…

    If you had read the book, when you saw the first one and how good it was you knew this one would be like Dark Knight to Batman Begins. All the action and satisfying moments are in second part of the book. The first is necessary world building and set up, to be honest I didn't think it would work. I thought people would hate it with unsatisfying ending. But Villeneuve did it so well that it worked. Making the first movie work is actually more of an achievement in my eyes --even though the second is the better movie. This second one is the part of the book everyone loved, it had all the juicy source material that designed to pay off the reader/audience.
    Making Dune Messiah work though will be the biggest challenge of all. It's not a crowd pleasing story. This could go Dark Knight Rises unfortunately.

Im talking about the moment when Paul enters the temple in the South Arrakis where he drinks the potion. I feel like the set up for this transformative moment was a bit rushed, and for a while I was confused where he actually is. I think that a brief scene would be enough to set it up properly. So when he arrives it makes sense that she has already opened every door for him. Its partly what makes her terrifying

    People who are actually, seriously comparing Dune to Star Wars really need to step back and question what point they're trying to make. I love Dune, read all the books, just like I love Star Wars. I'd never try to compare the two because I know it's kind of pointless. It's like comparing a children's novel to a best seller, 800 page introspective into the human psyche. Sure...you can do that, but who honestly believed they were comparable in the first place? And if your intention was to make a point about how smart you are, just say that. Honestly, it's so cringe reading all the comments saying "this movie makes Star Was look such and such" or "Wow, Star Wars could never do this!" Seriously, you're only showing people that your only frame of reference is Star Wars and Dune; And if you're trying do demonstrate your superior intellect, that's probably not a good idea.

    Eventually, there really isn't a question if Paul is a villain. In Messiah, there's a chapter early on in which Paul compares himself with Hitler and says that Hitler killed millions and Stilgar is like "with his own hands?" "No, with his armies" "Oh then that's nothing, your armies kill that many in a single month!" (paraphrasing)

    • @williamegan6756
      @williamegan6756 2 месяца назад

      It’s not that black and white. Paul’s reasons are far more nuanced than Hitler’s. The events that brought the jihad about were not wholly in Paul’s control, something he only realises later.

    The gold suits from Dune Part 1 was a figurative representation of the "Golden Path" in Paul's vision. That Paul will lead the Fremen as a Fremen down the "Golden path" its pretty deep visual in the first movie that pays off when you see Chani strike that pose in Dune Part 2. Basically, Chani is being built to be Paul's Antithesis in the third movie. A slight departure from the books

    As much as I like Dune part 2, I prefer Dune part 1. I think for me it was the first-time experience of the Dune universe. Having a slower pace in part 1 doesn't seem to bother me as much as other people. And part 1 was exactly what I've wanted from Star Wars since I was young. But Dune part 2 definitely does not disappoint :)

      My friends had the same feeling as well and I attribute it to the first being all set up. And so when it ends it leaves you with questions and implications that sets your imagination to create how it would end. And when we get part 2 we see but it may not be what we imagined. Doesn’t take away though cause part 2 is still really great.

    It’s like you guys forget that Paul is not the chosen one. Who was artificially genetically engineered. The whole prophecy was created by the Bene Gesserit for Paul so it would be easier for him to control the fremen. It is all artificial. So yes Chani is very right to be angry at Paul…

    Paul says he sees "one path forward," so essentially no, he never had the choice to slow things down after he defeated the Harkonnens and took back Arrakis. This one path is the path that leads to holy war and billions dead in his name, but it also leads to Fremen freedom. He makes a choice, but it is a terrible choice. The book refers to this as his "terrible purpose." He cannot just revert course, he has chosen a course that will now play out

    • @TheAcharyaa
      @TheAcharyaa 2 месяца назад +1

      In the books it is made explicit that there are ways to lead the Fremen to freedom without war, but it would lead to Paul giving up his quest for revenge and not being Emperor.
      Paul does make a choice and in the end chooses selfishly.

    Paul has become the head of a fanatical cult on the verge of a universe destroying holy war who isn't afraid to press his gifts and take advantage of those around him for "the greater good."
    He makes Thanos look like a reasonable guy.
    I don't know how anyone can root for Paul unless you also blindly agree with what Paul/Jessica thinks is right = objectively right.

    I saw this on IMax on three separate occasions. Christopher Walken was perfect as the emperor because this guy wasn't just the sovereign of some small peninsula or country or continent or even a planet. He was the emperor of an area so big that you literally have to bend space and time to get from one end of it to the other. He also commanded a military so formidable that it brought that entire universe to heal just on reputation alone!!! A guy like that's not going to be loud and boisterous or flamboyant because he doesn't need to be. It's like the old mob boss, who's whole crew is walking around in Gucci and he shows up in a cheap valore sweat suit. It's the understated one in the room who's calling all the shots?

    1:03:10 imagine if part 1 ended with a similar tease to part 2 like the “this is just the beginning.” But instead of Chani it was like the opening of Part 2 where Paul is talking to his sister in the womb and says something along the lines of, “I will see you soon Alia”

    Loved the film but do have problems with the pacing. The beginning too slow and the end too fast. Really wish that was reversed or keep the beginning and made the end longer. Also. The Empire played by Christian Walker
    did not work at all. Luckily its no big deal since he doesn't do much. I wish Feyd Rautha was giving a little more build up.
    Also. Visuals are truly amazing but I also love the soundtrack. Been listening to it since watching movie.

    I'm a hard core Dune series book reader, and I was NOT annoyed at all. It's amazing how well they adapted the book. Sure, some things changed, some things were left out, but it worked. It was the best film/theater experience I've ever had in my life. Every director should watch this film and think about they can even come close to making a movie like this, because the bar has been set HIGH.

    I wonder if Villenuve is planning on doing more sequels. Only because the subsequent books are super weird if I recall correctly and there’s also a massive time jump that basically removes a lot of the characters we’re familiar with. Then again Teddy even said this movie is pretty weird and he still loved it and wants a sequel tomorrow lol, so I think general audiences are down for the even more weird aspects of the subsequent books.

    Great movie but as a book reader I did have some issues. The complete flip of certain character’s motives and actions were a little jarring. Disappointed that we got no Count Fenring, no Thufir Hawat, basically no Alia. No spacing guild members in the final scene. Just kinda bummed that a lot of the subtle, devious, plans within plans stuff was nixed.
    But yeah, overall, incredible movie.

    I was a little concerned about Timothee being able to portray a strong Muad'Dib...but after he drank the Water of Life...all concerns were gone. He absolutely killed it. And I agree that Chani was being a bit hard on Paul. You have to remember...Paul realized that he was being manipulated and created into a pawn for the Bene Gesserit. He recognized it and SAW what would happen should he follow the path they laid before him. He was actively refusing to play into this because the life he wanted was to formulate a plan of revenge, but to do it his own way, and be with Chani. Yet as Chani said...other plans have forced their hand.
    The ending was so tragically sad. Paul, when speaking to Chani and asking her to remember that he would love her while he still drew breath...that was the final moment that Paul knew there was no turning back on the life he wanted. The only way forward for his own survival, for the revenge he sought, and for the survival of the people that took him in...was war. And his only real play was to utilize the mythology built around him to garner the power necessary to bring the empire that killed his family to it's knees.
    But he also knows that such an escalation was going to bring billions of deaths. This kid who was just trying to figure out how to live is now in a position where no decision holds anything less than dire consequences.

    I'm with Chani all the way through. I just can't stand how religions are used as a tool for propaganda, TO THIS DAY. It really hit when Paul's claimed his role and wore his father's ring in front of the crowd. He's reclaiming his name, while stripping the Fremens off theirs agency, fighting his war. Paul's not just planning to be Arrakis ruler, but he's becoming the emperor of ALL planets! Talk about going big. The whole arc is basically a cult leader coming into power with radicalized civilians trusting their "god" blindly, completely. Gotta love how dark it went.
    ps. Stilgar might be a fanatic cultist, but I can't not love him too. lol
