I like how in Andor, the Empire felt scary again -- they were not buffoons. Also, there wasn't a lightsaber battle every 10 minutes. Just good writing.

@@theranchokid I would argue that it is under watched because people were so put off by the poorly written crap-tastic parade of Star Wars shows Disney released before it. Mando season 1 was reasonably good. but 2 and 3 were... meh. So, when something actually worth their time came along, they had already jumped ship.

Humor isn't presented in a way that takes away from the story, makes fun out of a character thats meant to be scary - instead, it makes you go "ooooh shit", and start to use your brain to think about what just happened ... "Was it a joke?!?" "Can't be!" ... "Kinda makes sense that after years in prison isolation, he just didn't think about this ... detail" ... "does it make sense?" ... "Let me rewind ...."

    Easily the best, IMO.
Not just for Star Wars, but it stands out as purely exquisite television.
The world fleshed out, the politics of the Empire and the Rebellion (especially the notion about all the forces working in the Rebellion all having their own agenda), the philosophy of Nemik and the Rebellion, the Empire's spy network and easily displayed as the most competent here, etc, etc.
Not only that, the level of acting and the details here are juat phenomenal. Everyone will point to Serkis monologue or Skarsgard's, but Nemik's OOC or Mon Mothma's "if you've done nothing wrong you've nothing to fear" --- "I'm fearing your definition of wrong " schtick were jaw dropping.
Absolutely adored it. Especially that it had no sodding Jedi.

    • @IshtarNike
      @IshtarNike Месяц назад

@@Ronfost89I think your comparison is apples to oranges but just in a different way. Yeah, of course Andor couldn't be the opening to a new series. It's a spin off show by design. Also, Those films came out back when there were like 5 channels and almost anything worth watching always came out in the cinema. It wasn't that far removed from the days they'd show the news in the cinema FFS lol. Comparing raw views is completely inappropriate. And yeah, the originals were operating in an era where revolutionary leaps in tech and film making were more common. The science of film making using special effects and rapid editing is now a VERY mature medium, so nothing is going to be that ground breaking anymore.
In the CONTEXT of their respective formats, genres, and release eras, I'd say there's a solid argument for Andor to be considered better than those original films. The originals don't always have to be the best part of a franchise.

A note: Andor is not confused for someone else, getting arrested.
The empire and the ISB have established DETENTION QUOTAS, so the troops and judicial system can invent reasons to arrest anyone they think it's not important.
This is established in a conversation i think in episode 3, where the ISB director compliments Dedra Meero on surpassing her detention quotas in one sector under her responsibility
That's what brilliant writing is. Everything written had a reason to be, and no contradictions

The best way I would describe Andor is that it's thrilling and entertaining without the need to resort to flashy spectacle or having any sort of juvenile humour. Usually the spectacle is an easy low-hanging fruit for Star Wars, i.e. just have the lightsabers and space battles and people generally won't care even if the writing/acting is bad. The Prequel Trilogy is proof of this.
What Andor did was show what good acting/writing can look like in Star Wars. I remember the penultimate season of Mandalorian Season 2 where Bill Burr gave an amazing performance in that once scene with the imperial officer. Andor is like a whole season of stuff like that.
To be clear, I'm not saying that spectacle and silly/comedic tones are inherently bad, it's just a different flavour of entertainment. One way to look at it is Andor vs rest of Star Wars is kind of like comparing "The Batman" to "Batman and Robin". The latter gets flak for its silliness but is still a generally fun to watch movie, in the same way that Star Wars also gets flak for occasional silly elements like Ewoks or Jar Jar but is still fun to watch. The point is that both the serious and silly can co-exist and people can enjoy both. If you learn the wrong sort of lessons from Andor and think that Star Wars has to ditch the goofy stormtroopers and ewoks shift its tone to become super serious and gritty you'll just end up doing to Star Wars what Zack Snyder did to the DCEU.

Syril was a foil to Andor. He grew up without unconditional love; a mother that put him down, invalidated him, and emasculated him. Which made him naturally drawn to the powerful empire; if he could be a part of that he could finally have a little power and be validated.
Andor’s mother on the other hand validated him at every turn and even in death: her note to Andor as told through brasso - “tell him I’ll love him more than anything he can do wrong”. Andor therefore has agency, and is allergic to control and oppression.
Syril’s character is an example how some weak men are drawn to the empire. Not the only way, but one of them.

The prison scene wasnt random or messy. It was very intent in the story and writing. After Luthen was bold enough to organize the attack and heist on the imperial base the Empire tightened its grip and started to increase its tyrannical authoritarianism. Lathan even explains the heist was meant to push the Empire, instead of choking the galaxy slowly he forced their hand by resisting and attacking and it led to the increase in tyrannical behavior - which in turn put Cassian in the position to be arrested for nothing and given a 6 year sentence. It even pushed the prison break as they began increasing sentences and not releasing prisoners. It pushed everyone into a corner and revealed the true intent of the Empire.

Andor was brilliant to bad it did not get the ratings it deserved.
I think the problem is that Andor don't appeal to much to the casual audience. I don't say that just to be a dick but I know a few people watching the Mandalorian because "Baby Yoda is so cute" and who otherwise don't really care about Star Wars what so ever.
The people saying this isn't Star Wars I genuinely don't understand, Star Wars is not just lightsabers and jedi, if you pick up a Star Wars book or game you will soon see that they are all not about jedi and the force. I love jedi, sith and the force too, I have a full freaking Vader suit and a couple of lightsabers but that doesn't mean I don't want other stuff too, a big galaxy with unlimited possibilities.

Yes, Andor is the best Star Wars to date. The entire season was filled with tension and dialog that was never felt and heard in any Star Wars anything. Empire was good but there was never a moment where I felt the main characters were in trouble. Rogue One was great but still I don't know. Andor was near perfect.

  • @M2Mil7er

It's not the best Star Wars, since best implies an objective fact which needs to be true whether a human is there to witness it or not. If a human is there, it's subjective. It's plenty of people's favourite though, and for good reason. People use 'Best' when 'Favourite' is more accurate. It's missing so much much of the elemental DNA of ANH and ESB (Chosen one narrative, samurai, and western influences, mysticism, Arthurian legend, family orientated space adventure) It's certainly the most mature Disney+ SW show, and easily as good as the first 2 seasons of Mando (which has the DNA elements of SW Andor is missing), I like them both equally for different reasons.

4 years will be condensed in season 2. Because Tony Gilroy didn't want to spend a decade of his life with Star Wars. He doesn't need to. So don't the other telents like Serkis, Luna, Skaarsgard etc. If you let fanboys do it you get fanfiction.

At the beginning you make a good point, that Andor is what it was like when Empire came out. Then the other one of you said some people didn't like Empire when it came out. Actually, I was around when Empire came out, and it was more like you said a moment later about Andor. It wasn't that people didn't LIKE Empire, it's just that they felt it wasn't "Star Wars," because Star Wars, to them was more like the old serials of Buck Rogers and the like. But this was more mature than that. It's always funny to me when I hear people who praise Empire say they didn't like Andor because it's "not Star Wars", because they are echoing those people who said the same thing about Empire.

When they escape, IDC if you can't swim there's obviously plenty of other people who do.
You can obviously be carried by those who can.

We don't know if he made it or not. At the point we hear Kino say "I can't swim", Cassian gets shoved off the platform in the rush of prisoners and because this story is about Andor, we as viewers don't know what the ultimate fate of Kino really is. It was a beautifully crafted scene. Heart breaking yet not without a small amount of hope.

How is this even a debate? Has there ever been a piece of Star Wars media better than Andor? Is it fair to compare movies and series? I can agree with that argument. Even if you group Original Trilogy, Prequels, and Sequels, the writing and acting alone make Andor untouchable.
Now cultural impact, the Original Trilogy is by far the best of them all. There is no question that A New Hope was inspirational. But remember, Empire wasn’t that accepted and Return of the Jedi has its own detractors.
Was Andor perfect? No of course not. But is it the best SW media? Yes. Writing, acting, story it’s all there… even bricks. 🙄

Besides Rogue One, Solo, Kenobi, The Mandalorian (literal all 3 seasons), The 2008 Clone Wars, Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor, Visions, Tales of the Jedi and the Bad Batch, which are my favourites, but still just count as the on-screen-material, I could give another entire list of things inherently better than Andor.
      Let me begin:
Star Wars Uprising (best game ever, bring it back, now Lucasfilm!)
Rise of the Resistance and Flight of the Falcon (had the time of my life doing it)
      Both of the new Thrawn-trilogies
Pretty much everything related to the High Republic-Era
      Master and Apprentice
      Dooku: Jedi Lost
      Lost Stars
      Battlefront: Twilight Company
      Bloodline
      The Galaxy's Edge-novels (they're great fun)
      A New Dawn
      Leia: Princess of Alderaan
      Tarkin
      Lords of the Sith
      Catalyst
      Species Volume 1
      Brotherhood
      The Alphabet-Squadron-Trilogy
Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade
      Dark Disciple
      Rebel Rising
      The Princess and the Scoundrel
Ahsoka (the novel, not the show)
      Battlefront: Inferno-Squad
      Servant of the Empire
      Phasma
      Vader: Immortal
Both the 2015 and 2017-Darth Vader Comics
      The Doctor Aphra-comics
War of the Bounty Hunters, Crimson Reign and Hidden Empire
      The 2020-Star Wars Comic Run
      The Bounty Hunters-Comics
      The Obi-Wan Comic-Series
      The Yoda-Comic Series
      The Han Solo and Chewbacca-comic
      The Kanan-comic
      Weapon of a Jedi
Smuggler's Run (Both Junior Novel and comic strip)
      Shattered Empire
Heck, even Young Jedi Adventures captured me a million times more than Andor.

I also think I'm starting to agree with the people that are just done with the Skywalker saga. Like these offshoots are cool but this whole storyline we've been just kind of rehashing if the last several decades now and I'm just kind of starting to get burnt out on it. I really wish they would just go back a thousand years ago forward a thousand years give us nights of the old Republic or something just something different that's just away from what we've been having for the last several decades It's all roughly in the same time frame even if it doesn't directly follow Skywalker stuff. We want crazy lightsaber fights so I'd probably say go to Old Republic get some crazy shit but they definitely need to move away from this if they don't buy like I want to say 2025 2030 people are just going to be 100% done with Star wars if they don't start moving away sooner than later
And I have been enjoying ahsoka for the most part I've been AFK farming in starfield while watching it so it has 90% of my attention. I'm really enjoying Seeing Hayden back as Anakin he was definitely a breath of fresh air and you can just see his love for that role which is adorable
Also rogue One was fucking awesome. Go Donnie yen!
99% of the reason why I saw that movie lol
