Dawson is every kid with their dad telling 'em what to do when they're already doing it right. I'm late 50's Dawson and I still feel your pain dude. The flip side is when dad is old and retired and he wants to work on your jobs just to get out of the house. You get to do the same exact thing right back to him. Feels great, trust me!
great video. I ran into the same problem getting that nut off. I used a vise grips at the very top of the shaft where marring is not an issue. before re- assembly I cleaned the burr off the top of shaft. Tractor is working again due to your video. Thank you very much. You are teaching your son how to think before he acts, I did the same thing with my kid. Now he can fix anything. p.s. that bearing can be greased, there is a screw down there. you can take the screw out and put grease in it. Excellent job
Always clean the equipment before working on it. 1st step always take a leaf blower and clean the tractor, 2nd step learn how to remove the mower deck. 6 pins and its very easy, especially on the Husqvarna, They are made to be removed and it gives you so much room to work on the tractor. Glad to see you teaching how to do basic mechanics/ maintenance.
Clean all the parts and check the bearing they help those shift rods movements thats what was wrong with mind. Thank you both for sharing this information.
Great VID. Before you take anything apart go after the problem with air and water. Pull the battery and the holder and spend 2 minutes with your leaf blower on the top of the deck and transmission. Then swap to your pressure washer and wash everything till you are getting nothing more out from under there. Solidified grass clippings are the most likely problem. You may be amazed at what you see that comes out in the form of little grass bricks. I had my Poulan Pro run for about a hundred hours before this problem cropped up. Took me about an hour to fix it. Repeat once a month during mowing season, and again before winterizing and storage.
I also have a YTA 18542 and the shift pedal to reverse is not working properly. Also the disengage rod on the rear doesn't work properly, as well. This is exactly the video I've been searching for. Great video and thank you!
I have to agree, i moved my battery to back of mower on a metal frame so i can pressure wash tranny evrry time i mow to remove grass and dirt. And lube things. Also spray belt dressing on belts.
Grass jammed the mechanism. I bought one in 2009. There are no covers on the top of my transmission. About every 5 years, I remove the battery and vacuum all the packed grass out of the top of it using a screwdriver to loosen it up. An air compressor would be better, but I don't have one. I blow the mower base clean with a leaf blower after cutting. It will get 99% of the grass off the base. Water is a bad idea due to rusting. Leaving it outside uncovered is not recommended. The axle seals eventually leak. Glue the new ones in with silicone sealant so they don't work loose. Those transmissions never need grease added. Do not pressure wash them.
On the plastic Tran it’s just easier to drop the Tran out and press wash it really good before working on it 😊 We have grassburrs and you can’t really get them out without sticking yourself
Thank you Guys on this great and detailed video and I have exactly the same sticking issue with the same Husqvarna lawn tractor, what a coincident. I only want to ask how Dawson lifted the the forward and backward lever from the transmission before pulling it out of the tractor, that is about 14.59 minutes from the start of the video. There is some kind of washer or clip holding the metal lever to the part on the transmission that you showed in the beginning that was sticking when pushed back and forth by the lever. So do we just pull the metal lever from the arm without doing anything to the clip that is holding it on the arm?
Use a leaf blower to blow off the grass debris after each mowing, then continue to blow off the rest of the tractor. It only takes 1 minute. buy a stop watch and time it. Once it's blown off you can then wash it if you want to, but then use the leaf blower again to blow off the excess water.
Looking at 20:08 you can see how the freewheel rod is bent. My mower is 6 years old and the freewheel rod got so bent, I couldn't get it back into gear. I have the plastic General transmission. I bought a carburetor throttle swivel and a 1/4" metal rod, removed the flimsy rod, heated a 1/4" bolt with a propane torch, and enlarged the hole that the rod was in. I bolted the swivel on to the plastic trans tab (use the nylon lock nut & washer), cut, bent & threaded the rod. Now I have a very stiff rod that will not bend. To make this upgrade, just remove the left rear wheel, and it is easily accessible. 1 - 36" rod will make 2 disconnect rods, each 18" with a 4" handle(14" + 4"). Thread the handle into the swivel, then use the supplied nut to jamb and lock it into place. I moved the location the rod comes out the back, to the corner hole to the left of the keyhole shape. at 27:49 i tried using the chisel and a bunch of other methods but i ended giving up cuz it didn’t come out. ended up just cutting the plastic peice right below the spindle that you were dissasembling and it came out just fine
That’s why I’m looking for this video. That top of that cover is cracked on mine and it started immediately getting stuck in gear unless you used the brake. I’m ansie to see what he has to say about the binding underneath that cover because that’s what I seem to be coming across but wanted to see someone else ruin their transmission before I opened mine up for the second time.
The problem is it's made of plastic . Low speed friction can do the same damage as high speed over time . Even with metal guides there will be heat transfer to the plastic . Too many plastic moving parts in the dirt and grass area . Just bad design and poor quality parts . Never tow a yard trailer with a load . This transmission will not hold up if operators are too heavy , the plastic will flex . Extra weight from bags plus operator is too much . NEVER buy a tractor with a plastic transmission ! JUNK !
I have the Husqvarna ST 138 2015 model and it drives fine in reverse, but when I push the foot petal to go forward it starts driving in reverse as well.. Can not work it out for the life of me..?
Those are piece of crap plastic transmission. Another problem which those one have is the leaking by the wheel axle because of the flex in the plastic body.
My opinion- WORST transmission EVER. just look at its application history- only used for a short period of time. Wrnt back to the k46. One thing I'll give it though is the manufacturer is great fo work with, and probably has THE BESF service manual for this transmission i have ever seen for ANY product
Awesome repair video. Lots of repair videos on your channel, Are you up for a collaboration? Hipa supplies parts for small engines and maybe we would work together to help more people in the community.

Best video I've seen about the RS 800. I used my poulan pro commercially for four seasons without issues.

Thanks guys. Great father son day. And what you showed me was invaluable. Going to work on mine now.
Thanks. Good luck.
Good video like the details on replacing it and enjoyed watching you and your son work together

I’ve got the same issue, thanks for the video, now I can go after it.
thx for the vid. Got the same problem with mine. I have to drop the transmission. I agree that it's a poor design.
You helped me to fix my gearbox. Thanks.
Good news.
Thank You!! Awesome job! Plan to do it this weekend with this video as reference!
Thanks. Hope it helps save money.

Now that I see debris getting inside is the problem I have the blower handy.
looks like the bearing is missing on the control arm which allows more play/binding in the groove of the rotation cam
I will get a parts view and see. Thank you.

It worked for me. Usually just grass plugging it up.
So to wrap it up, was it just debris under that plastic cover??
I think that's all it was not allowing full motion. Thank you for watching.
Those type of transmission need to be kept clean and the belt needs to be the correct size
Used a pair of needle nose pliers

Strange. It sounds like a linkage adjustment. Good luck.
There is no pulleys on the transmission. Those are your primary and secondary centrifugal clutches.
The manufacturer calls them pulleys.
My shift rod keeps coming off. Is there a clip or something that holds it in place??
I believe there is a pin
Pull the shift rod and drill a hole in it for a carter pin.
@@patkelley2190should be either a push clip or e clip. E clip would be better.
Thank you going to Harbor Freight today to
purchase the E Clips. @@BryanPAllen
Mine has a push on clip
Don’t buy them if it’s a plastic transmission
Those are piece of crap plastic transmission. Another problem which those one have is the leaking by the wheel axle because of the flex in the plastic body.
Yes, at least they have grease and not hydraulic fluid that leaks all over.
For one thing it's junk cause it's made out of plastic
Agree
The camera is moving so fast it makes me dizzy light is very poor .
Sorry we need a camera man

Agree
The best fix for those plastic transmissions is a garbage can.
Agree
And the replacement is?
Can you do less complaining and more teaching?
On THIS particular transmission, probably not. Worst transmission EVER
he is teaching his boy to think first before acting.
