Patek Philippe vs Audemars Piguet - Which One Is Better??

  • Nowadays with the rise of the Nautilus prices it's easy to pick Patek, but there are many factors that do not include current market price.
    _______________________________________________________________________
    I’m Watch Eric and in this video we’re going to be debating Patek Philippe vs. Audemars Piguet.
    I've always told people that when comparing the “popular” big three brands the line up is as follows: Rolex is at the bottom, AP in the middle, and Patek is on top. In this debate today we are not taking into consideration the recent high market prices of Patek. We are looking at this from the perspective of branding, models, traditions, and retail prices.
    Brand Recognition
    The first brand that is the master of this is Rolex. You can go anywhere in the world and people will know that a Rolex watch is a thing of value. Although I love AP, I feel that Patek has way more brand recognition worldwide. I would say that in the “expensive’ watch world, right after Rolex everyone recognizes Patek Philippe. They may not know much about an AP, but you show them a very old and thin Calatrava and they will read the name and say omg it’s a Patek Philippe.
    Flag Ship Models
    When comparing the design of their flagship models which right now are the AP Royal Oak and the Patek Nautilus, I like to use cars to help relate to these models. The Royal Oak is more of a sports car like Ferrari or Lamborghini. Sharper lines and more of an aggressive sporty look. While the Nautilus has more smoother elegant lines like those of a Rolls Royce. Although they are two different looks, I notice that sports car guys will have a Rolls most of the times, but many times a guy with a Rolls will not have a sports car. This happens too with Patek. It’s timeless just like a Rolls Royce.
    Traditional Leather Strap Models
    When you put aside the sports models of the two brands and we focus on the other models. Patek is on top.
    AP has there Jules Audemars line up and the new Code11.59, but these models have not really had much success like countless Patek models have. Some of my favorites like the 5070, 5270, and 5960 are classics. Not to mention my all time favorite Patek models the Celestial and the Sky moon. AP just does not have anything to really compete with them.
    Finish and Presentation
    Both brands have a high quality finish and presentation. Patek seems to go a bit more above and beyond. Even the box tends to have more of a luxurious feel. AP warranty papers come in a book that is nice but Patek has a unique leather folder for the papers and a lot more touches that make you feel like you are really getting more of an experience. AP movements have an amazing finish, but Patek tends to take it up one more notch on finish and presentation.
    Brand Tradition
    Patek seems to be a brand that is more of a family heirloom. Just has that deep root tradition.
    Patek coined the slogan “You never actually own a Patek, you merely look after it for the next generation”.
    Genius marketing but true. As much as I enjoy the AP brand, I do not see someone buying a 44mm Rose gold offshore for the purpose of passing it down as an heirloom. Patek never does what is popular. They do what is right for the brand and the heritage.
    The conclusion is that Patek Philippe is the next level after Audemars Piguet.

    That’s not a serious competition. AP has had one watch for years, PP covers the entire spectrum with a lot better finishing.
    VC is a lot close to PP than AP (even though VC is underrated vs the two others).
    If you want to compare PP to another larger brand, then it is A Lange. Otherwise these two are only second to some smaller watchmaker owned brands

      I’m starting to doubt pateks finishing. I mean just look at the subdial hands at 1:28, horomariobro on Instagram has some great macro shots highlighting this on a 5712 and I’ve even seen it without a loupe on a 5205. This is incredibly frustrating because they denounced the Geneva seal for not being a high enough standard and claimed the Patek seal demanded higher quality yet there is no way that would pass. More frustrating is the 6007 released earlier this year that meant to be a showcase for their ‘new headquarters in Geneva, but they used a stamped dial rather than a guilloched one, another corner cut that makes me worry Patek is going to be making more watches cheaply

I own an offshore and a Royal Oak in RG and just don’t see me giving both of those and still not being able to afford a 5980rg! I guess when you have the money then you get to the PP level! My comparison Is PP is a rolls Royce and AP is a Bentley! All super cars like a red 488 would be a Richard Mille! 😊✌🏼

    Good point about the models. I don't think I know of any other watch besides the royal oak from AP (why the name btw, nothing about it fits the name). But I can think of about three different looking non-nautilus Patek watches. AP is my favorite looking watch but Patek just symbolizes understated, classy old money. If you have a Patek, you likely also have multiple bank accounts, IRA, a summer home, etc. If you own an AP, chances are higher you just own a really cool and expensive watch.

    Hey Eric! Will be dropping u an email on a collab. Hope to hear from you soon! Great video too, Patek Philippe is 2nd to none imo, especially when it comes to the nautilus’ , no competition to royal oaks in my opinion. the design is timeless, classy and not too loud, yet it demands the respect it deserves. I love the AP royal oak too but the nautilus takes the cake everytime for me. Tried on the 5712R and fell in love ever since.

    To me the design of the AP never feels dated, whereas the Nautilus definitely has a stronger 70s vibe to it that might feel dated to some. Personally i prefer the design of the RO. Ps I never realised the movement finishing of the Nautilus was superior to the Royal Oak, I had presumed the craftsmanship of the Patek, AP and Vacheron were on a similar level.....

    • @marcozuleta133
      @marcozuleta133 5 месяцев назад

      Dont know if this is an unpopular opinion, but the Nautilus is waaay better looking and elegant than the Royal Oak. The RO looks very unrefined and rough (specially with those hideous screws on the bezel) whilst the Nautilus has a more elegant and luxurious look to it. The RO looks like a $800 watch compared to a $10.000 look of the Nautilus

    I gotta say: Really good video. You get a subscription for sure, good content. Though I have to disagree with one point: It's right that some people dislike sports cars though I think many many many people prefer a fast sports car over a rolls royce and many many people drive a sportscar (an exotic one) and as their second car they have a Mercedes, BMW or Audi. For many people a sports car even is a child dream, whereas a RR isn't. Whatsoever I also prefer a luxury Wraith over a Ferarri because let's be real, a Ferrari etc really isnt a car for the daily life.
    And btw, isn't that Day-Date on your arm even more expensive than a Nautilus or Royal Oak in steel?

    I like your comparison between cars and Watches . I find you made the perfect example by comparing Patek watches to Rolls Royce and Audemars to Lamborghini ( because the lines of modern royal oak offshores remind me more of it than Ferrari).
    I would paradoxically compare Ferrari’s only to 571x’s models for PP or classics 154xx and 155xx for AP because a Ferrari is surely sporty but classy at the same time.
    Two amazing brands and yet I again agree with you that Patek has a better whole rounded collection. Think of the Sky Moon Tourbillon. A 2 Mil Wonder watch.
    And I understand why AP might be perceived as way better by younger generations as AP has been at the forefront of a design revolution with ultra modern lines and sleek designs.
    They pioneered the iced out wave this appealing Rappers and getting the message across for youngsters through their idols.
    Yet as you mentioned the code 11.59 or the Millenary collections despite its breakthrough features have not really stuck into the classic watch design realm as much as certain Patek collection pieces.
    I personally favour Patek. Because it certainly is a better investment in the long term.
    But have the privilege of owning both and thus being able to decide when to wear what.

    The "Murderers Row" of "Heavy Hitters" Eric. Great comparison video. Chock full of details and honest opinions. Let's not forget the outtakes. Jajajajaja PP for understated creme de la creme. AP for the nouveau rich. Depends if you want to be noticed or envied. PP for me.

    Completely agree, although I like the Royal Oak over the Nautilus, Patek as a brand is so much more well rounded and well thought out. I still prefer Vacheron over Patek. Vacheron Vs Patek possible video idea .......

    Cool Vid, like always! 😀 But I don‘t agree with u at the patek-Status: I think there a some other brands in that range (like Breguet, Lange, Blancpain) which have similar or better quality, but not such a good marketing like Patek... and finally - how serious can I take a brand like Patek that produces also Quarz-models?!? 😑

  • @melberber79
    @melberber79 4 года назад +2

    I've always thought that rolex and Patek had great proportions and symmetry to their watches... AP on the other hand just seem so large and over the top... Even the AP RO at 39mm is too large... The new 37mm seem more fitting however.

  • @Edunf83
    @Edunf83 4 года назад +1

    Damn bro, you didn't give AP much of a chance! 😂 But seriously no argument here, Patek is a Rolls Royce and AP is a sports car - I personally think that besides the nautilus and the aquanaut (which I don't really like) PP is a bit too "dressy' for me...and since IDGAF about taking care of my watch for the next generation I'll burn my cash with something I think is cool AF right now - AP all the way! Cool video!

    You’re so right about Patek name vs AP. Even my wife, who doesn’t give two shits about watches, asked me what I was thinking about buying next, and I mentioned looking at a Patek. She said “Did you get a bonus at work?” She was kidding, but she recognized it as the best (for her, that’s most expensive :) ) She would have no clue what a AP was. I also like that you put Rolex third, rather than Vacheron. VC’s are better watches than Rolex in most cases, but their marketing sucks (should that matter? No. Does it? 100%). And finally, you know this is a legit video since Eric is the one who has almost convinced me to buy an AP. I’m shocked he didn’t pick AP.

    • @WatchEric

  • @XFXBoard

    Yes. Patek is on another historical and maybe mechanical level, but the design and finish of the Royal Oak is amazing, striking. Even the bracelet design is so beautifully made, makes it look like a bargain next to a Nautilus.

    • @WatchEric
      @WatchEric  4 года назад +1

    • @James_Lurk
      @James_Lurk Год назад

      Why is Patek another historical level? It is a Royal Oak itself, who saved swiss watchmaking and who is the real pioneer in this segment. Nautilus is then just one of many followers. Actually AP is on different mechanical level in compare to Patek, they just do nothing last years.
