I adopted two siblings, boy and girl, through an agency and it was completely free. All court charges including attorney fees were covered. We have been fostering for 3 years now and have only paid for CPR classes, background checks for out of country family members whenever they visit. Fostering is rewarding, but a lot of work. It is a daily struggle but the smiles on their faces, makes it worthwhile.

Recently, I've been pulling my life together and going to college in my late 20's to get a solid life. After working with mistreated foster kids in a public school setting, I knew I could do better. It's my goal to become a foster mom. I haven't searched up on anything foster related since I am still a couple years away from my goal but somehow this channel and your videos were recommended to me. If this ain't the universe's way of nudging me and telling me to keep it up.

Teachers are mandated reporters. That means you are obligated to report ANY abuse that you observe or the child tells you about to your county or state CPS. I am not sure what the laws in Connecticut are. In Ohio, that is the law for a mandated reporter if they observe abuse or if a child tells you about abuse, a teacher is obligater to teport said abuse.

@@phantomvampyressshadowkiss4690 Whether you adopt privately or through foster care, you have to have a home study done. The licensing classes or foster care in my county is 40 hours and half of it are online. A lot of the process is paperwork...references, financial documents, medical. I don't think psychological eval is standard. Agree there is CPR/First Aide and fire inspection from fire dept. (think there was a fee for this). The social workers inspect for basic safety, space..ie how many rooms/beds do you have. Some states, you have to pay for the actual court costs for adoption. Like Kim, I paid nothing. I even got one copy of the adoption decree free. I paid for a new birth certificate. $12. That's it. When we adopted our cat, I paid $150. My son said, "You paid more to adopt the cat than me." Crazy world. To renew my foster license this year, I had to provide a copy of my driver's record. Another $12.

I swear representation is so important because without the fact that you're also a black woman who wants to be a mom but doesn't want biological kids like me and spreads positivity about adopting kids of all races, I never would have fully considered this as an option I'm so passionate about. It's not happening anytime soon, as I'm mid-20s and still working out my _own_ issues, but when the time comes around, I'll be so glad I found out about the system through you!

Thank you so, so much for making these videos! My husband and I have gone through several pregnancy losses. I won't ever be able to have a biological child. It had put me in into a rough place to accept that I won't ever get the chance to be a mom and love and raise a child. Adoption is something we would love to do but I never thought possible. I never thought we would qualify as my husband works two part time jobs and I teach but do not pull in very much. We know we can afford a child if we put our minds to it but not the expenses to adopt one (I want to stress we would never be selfish enough to adopt a child if we could not afford one just to fulfill our own needs of being a parent. But the adoption costs seem astronomical). Your videos have given us hope that there is a way to do so. I don't know how your video ended up on my front page, but I believe it was for a reason. To see how you became a mom and to watch how much you love your children and they love you and how happy they are fills my heart with hope and joy. Thank you, thank you--thank you for being a wonderful mom, person, and an inspiration!❤️

Goodness, my heart just melted more than it should have.
I’m only a teen girl, but ever since my mom bought KFC chicken for two teen boys on my 10th birthday (I’m pretty sure they were runways.) I knew I wanted to adopt, and to this day I still do. Every time I hear news about children being taken away by their family or lose their family, I cry and feel their pain as an empath. I know it’s not good to feel the same pain, but I find that as a blessing and a ‘curse’ at times.
I really want to becoming a psychiatrist or a social worker, but for sure I want to work with children and families, that’s what I believe I should do. I’m working really hard on my studies in order to provide for myself in the future and for the future children I would love to adopt.
Anyhoo, enough about me! I’m so happy and grateful to bump into your channel! You gave me new and more important info about the adoption world! I just want to say thank you and keep being a wonderful mother! ❤️❤️❤️

When I started my classes to become a foster to adopt parent, the beginning was really tough. Not only did they pull at our heart strings a lot - for example, they made us lay out in colourful marbles all the people that were close to us when we were children and then how close they were now we were adults, with lots of tears flowing especially for the ones who passed away - but they also prepared us for everything that might happen. Reunification with the birth family, reactive attachment disorder, fetal alcohol syndrome. After 3 weeks of classes, only 2 or 3 people/couples had stopped coming. In week 4 the instructor told us we also had a right to a stipend per foster child and most people seemed really surprised by it. One couple actually got offended: "We have 2 houses and 3 cars, we don't need this!" So much for foster parents only being in it for the money...
Oh, and if I calculated correctly, my "job" as a foster parent pays about 60 cents per hour, no weekends or holidays of course. I made more washing bicycles at age 6 :-P

I know this was 4 years ago 😂 but I can relate to absolutely everything you’re saying! You are also hilarious. In my experience, it’s so hard to be a foster parent when you’re wanting to adopt. With every kid we’ve had, we always think “is this the one” and we look at every case with hope for adoption. But it’s been such a lesson on putting aside our desires and having patience. We have a 3 month old right now we’ve had since 3 weeks. I can’t imagine him leaving and it will be extremely devastating. He’s our 5th placement and we haven’t adopted yet. The emotional toll it has on everyone is hard. I understand why people go through adoption agencies and don’t want to do foster care. But I wouldn’t change our decision to be foster parents!

@@Latte-girly90 People adopt internationally for many different reasons. They are still providing homes to children who need families. Fostering does not mean you're going to adopt. That's not the primary focus. It happens, but reunification is the goal.
if an individual/couple wants to go directly to adoption (in the USA) there are three options: domestic infant adoption, international adoption (infant-teenager), or adoption of children waiting in foster care which are typically older children/sibling groups, or young children with severe medical diagnoses.

@@astroradha7124 International adoption programs can even have fewer fees than domestic infant adoption. Foster care is not adoption. It happens, but it's not the goal. I adopted internationally and thought long and hard about foster care but realized what I wanted (to be a mom to a child) and what foster care is (the temporary support of a child and family so they may be reunited). I definitely still have foster care in my heart with adjusted expectations or am open to adopting an older waiting child when my daughter is older.

I love when a child feels secure enough in their home that a beautiful personality just blooms. How low and despicable the situation in the world has become regarding the abuse and even the life of these precious babies. As you said people are a lot crazier these days. To be able to show a child that are safe, and that with all your heart and being you will love them, what a wonderful blessing and a great gift to give. I have an "Empty Nest" and have thought about adopting/fostering children that God would want me to help: on the fence. So glad to find your channel. I think about it all the time. *I'm over 50, so not sure I would be a good fit, but you are giving great info. I will keep watching and hope for the best.

Loveeee what you said that if the kids don't like him, he gotta go! I recently heard another mom (an adoptive mom too though thats irrelevant) say she is dating a much younger man and though her kids don't like him, it don't matter because SHE is the one who is dating him and will possibly spend her whole life with him. Basically she does not care if her kids like her man or not. I thought that was extremely selfish and just setting yourself up for a really messy personal life but to each their own I guess.

This makes me hopeful for the future. I've always wanted to adopt and foster. I hope within the next 5 years I'll be in the right place to make a good and safe home. Once I'm out of school and make a permanent residence in a state, I would love to make this reality. I'm so happy I found your channel.

In Michigan it's required for a prospective family to work with an agency and it's 100% free to adopt from foster care. Same process as all states in terms of licensing and inspections and home study, but the agency vouches on the family's behalf and does the bulk of the paperwork and hand holding. The only things that are not free are occasionally the filing fee (averages $200-300 but often reimbursed), beds/any items the child needs to meet basic needs, and any updates that must be accomplished in order for the home study to pass (for example, we had to pay to get a reverse osmosis system on our kitchen sink before submitting our home study to the state for licensing because we have well water and above average arsenic levels, which was required by the health Dept to get resolved). CPR/first aid and all training courses were paid for by the agency, which was paid/funded by the state indirectly. The process has been great, and MARE.org lists adoptable children in Michigan with photos (reminder that thousands of other kids not shown are in foster homes or needing foster homes). Anyone with questions, feel free to ask! I am a recently approved foster to adopt parent in Michigan (as of 2020). Also in Michigan, we do dual licenses - you get licensed to foster AND licensed to adopt at the same time (unless the intent is to never adopt, then you can just do a foster license).

I was adopted in Connecticut and I was in both, an agency and a personal case. It was me and my sister. To answer your question yes back then it was a cost but not its free due to the the respite care or parent to be will opt out. Meaning the case worker or DCF worker want you to adopt so they don't charge anymore.
Anyways I know a few that bought vans, cars, house, clothes etc from the money that is granted FOR THE CHILD(REN).. Sad 😔 BUT I WANT TO ADOPT OR DO FOSTER CARE! I LOVE KIDS ALL SHAPES AND SIZES.. EVEN WITH A DISABILITY... I'M NO JUDGE MANY KIDS NEED LOVE AND A HOME! So thank you for sharing your story with us. #supermomwithabigheart

You have to be able to support yourself and family without the foster care stipend. Idaho considers the stipends room and board so it is designed to cover food for the foster child, diapers, things like that. We can also request vouchers for gas for transporting them to appointments and for diapers. We could originally ask for vouchers for clothes but since we are now the pre-adoptive home, we are expected to cover their clothes now. We can also allow a child under 3, to sleep in our room but their bed must be at least 3 feet from our bed.

For anyone getting licensed now and needing things: Target will have certain Graco car seats half off for Black Friday. They had an early sale a few weeks ago. After Christmas, Target especially, clears out their holiday clothes fast...as in a few days and then ships them back. Infant/toddler blanket sleepers are $1.32 and two packs were under 2 bucks last year. Bibs were 32 cents. You can find red things w/out Santa that roll right on into Valentine's. Walmart does their socks and underwear sale Black Friday. If you foster...you are eligible for WIC for kids up to 5 years old (formula/baby food) then eggs, milk, beans cheese, bread. School age kids are eligible for free meals at school. You get really craft at finding sales/good deals. Old Navy has good post holiday sales, too and Children's Place outlets for their monster sale in Jan. It's good to stock up on sale and have some thing on hand b/c kids show up at your door in the outfit they are wearing...no coat and shoes sometimes. Workers get in/get them out to reduce trauma to the kids if the parents are flipping out. They aren't stopping to pack formula/clothes. Or, the parents say they CAN"T take anything. (Sometimes they do depending on the situation. But, in 14 years, I have never had a kid come with a packed suitcase. One time only..a diaper bag with clothes that fit.) If you take lots of kids for short term placements...it's good to have things on hand. Too expensive to go pay full price for everything for each kid. The stipend comes a month later as a reimbursement. We get $28 a day. Imagine you had a kid for a long weekend and needed to buy a few sets of clothes, pjs, socks, a jacket, shoes, underwear or diapers, tooth brush, brush, personal care items. Could you do that for 90 bucks full price? People who say foster parents do it for the money, are not foster parents. I still don't understand the bad apples who do do it for money. Not worth the stress or hassle.

I adopted our twins from foster care.. It was the best decision of my life. I actually found this channel while researching fostering.
Oh, here in my state of California, you do not pay anything to the agency. The state pays the agency so they have a third party license foster homes and do inspections more often then the County does.
Oh, and it was free. My County required an attorney to finalize an adoption, so I did hire a private one. I could've had a pro bono, but then you wait longer for the adoption to be finalized. However, the County reimbursed us a few months later.

So glad I came across your video. I’m a licensed foster parent through Bethany Christian Services. I’m going through the process of adopting one of my fosters☺️ but in Michigan I didn’t have to pay for any parenting class or home studies or home inspection and CPR classes. Now when it comes to filing adoption papers I’m not sure the cost but my agency told me the state would pay for my adoption process.

There are so many people who do it for money which is sad. When I first went to foster and quit, I ran into the people doing it for money. This was 20 years ago and in Florida you could get a large number of children and not have a job. Now, thankfully, you must show you can take care of the child without a stipend which cut back on the crooks doing it for money. There was one woman in our class who had moved from another state and her first question to the foster class instructor was "how many children are you allowed to foster?" Red flag. She threw up a lot of red flags and thankfully was kicked out before I quit.
Yes, it is free going through the system.

We adopted through Foster Care in the State of California. We didn't even have to be licensed Foster Parents, because he was a blood relative to my husband, to have him placed with us. We still had to have background home inspection etc. They also had "difficulty of care" added to the standard monthly assistance pay because of his issues being born to drug addicted parents and neglect his first year of life. The Adoption Agency conducted all the background checks and home study absolutely free. We also continued to receive Adoption Assistance monthly until he turned 18 from the County as well as MediCal that covered Dental and what our Medical Insurance didn't cover. The Adoption Assistance was periodically increased for things like Therapy, Orthodonics or anything that was costing us extra to provide for him. I always joked that they didn't want us trying to return him so they kept paying us.
