You have a very nice process for these burp cloths. I like the serger method. Your idea to quilt or topstitch across the thirds is a very good idea, too.
If I could share my excitement right now, I'd gladly do so. I just made my first Burp Cloth and It actually worked. The excitement is real Jan. I was the one at school that refused wholeheartedly to sew. I was the one always sat at the back of the classroom in disgrace. Oh, if my sewing teacher could see me now!!!! Mrs Scott, you would be so proud of me. Jan, you are an amazing teacher. Hubby thinks Ive gone nuts, as in 32 years of marriage, Ive refused to sew a button on his shirts, sew a hem on his trousers, etc etc. Im having so much fun right now with your channel. Many Many Thanks, hun xx
A little trick before you turn inside out .... where the opening is at > press the unsewn seam allowance open by pulling tight from backtack to backtack & it will automatically form the straight edge of the seam then press with iron. Now turn it right side out & the seam naturally falls into place with less fudging & burning your fingers tips-lol
I'm not a full on beginner but still love the complete instructions. The red arrow is perfect, could enjoy more. No sound, except your calming voice creates a perfec learning environment. Thank you for all of your time and talent ❤️
I would have cut that fabric so the flowers are going the length of the burp cloth .... so the flowers are facing up on your shoulder 👍🏼 but that’s just me
Great tutorial. Very simple, yet cute and functional. I have made about 30 -40 burp clothes the last two years, and I love the idea of using terry cloth or towels for the backing. Also, running just the two stitching lines as fold lines is brilliant! Thanks! Am making more burp clothes soon for a new baby.
I am totally new at sewing. I just watched the mitered corner baby blanket and you talked about the burp clothes and how I could you leftover fabric to make them. Can't wait for store to open so I can get started. I have a 3 day old great neice that I will make them for. Woo woo so excited 😁
I learned to sew by making burp rags with my church’s women's group as a service project to benefit a local NICU. They were a perfect learning project as the pattern we used was very forgiving, and all the seams are just straight seams. I have gone on to teach elementary school aged girls to sew with the same project. When my grandson was born a few years ago I of course made a huge stack for him. Much to my delight, this little baby loved the soft flannel rags and they became his security blankie/comfort item that he took everywhere he went with him! And the best part? He had at least a dozen of these burp cloths and was happy with any one of them, so no inconsolable child crying if his one comfort item gets lost as he had the whole stack to choose from at anytime. The pattern used by this RUclipsr is very similar to the pattern I first learned, except I would say her version is a little nicer than my everyday pattern. I would use this pattern when making burp cloths as a shower gift, for example. Great tutorial!
I have been craft sewing for about a year. Your instructions are straightforward and so easy to follow. Thank you...I feel like I can actually do this skill after watching a couple of your videos.
I definitely pre wash all my fabrics prior to cutting and sewing . Cottons, flannels , terry cloth all shrink at different percentages. If the fabric is not pre washed, when the receiver washes and throws them in the dryer, you can have a distorted rectangle. I wash all my burp clothes, iron them and place them in a plastic bag ready to be used by the new mom. I also place a note indicating ready to use.
I am so new at sewing anything. But Just found out I am going to be a grandma sometime at the end of December and cannot wait to sew my own baby blankets, burp cloths and more. Thank you for making so simple:)

I’m not criticizing your burp clothes bcoz there again you’ll still need them to clean up ! Backup’s always come in handy ! I like the size I always make mine big !
New subscriber here from Australia just came across your channel love the way u teach I am a newbie to sewing so this burp cloth looks like a good place to start thank u for explaining it so fully now to go and make my own
I love your tutorials. You explain each step so well. Your tutorial on self binding baby blanket it great! I think it is the best one I have seen. If you aren’t precise with that blanket it will not turn out well and you show each step so well. Great job!
Hi I just ran across and watched your video and subscribed. Great tutorial for a beginner like me. I also just brought that same Viking sewing machine. Thanks for the easy to follow video. Will be watching for more!👏👏
OK, first of all, the project is great and your instructions are so clear. I have some new parents who will be receiving some of these from me in the near future :) Secondly, your masking tape idea is golden! I plan to loosely roll the scraps of tape into ball, sticky side out to use as a lint remover on my sewing area and my clothes when I'm done sewing for the day.
At the age of 60 I’m going to be a granny for the first time. I’m very excited to see your tutorial. Guess what I’ll be making a few of very soon..... thank you
I am so happy I found your video. I just found out that Im gonna be a Grandma for the first time and really wanted to start making things for my daughter. Very beginner level skills so this is perfect. Just adds to my excitement. Thank you. ❤❤❤
Wonderful! I'm posting a new video in the morning on how to make a waterproof baby changing mat. Super easy project. Be sure to check it out. How fun to sew for grandkiddos.❤️
Very clear tutorial! I’ve found that it’s easier to fold the edges of the opening to the inside if I leave it in the center of the seam and not at the corner. Otherwise, this is exactly how I make burp cloths.
Hi! Jan, I really like how well you explain your tutorials and was wondering if you made one for the wrist pin cushion you are wearing? I would like to make one for myself! I have subscribed! Thanks Joan

You want to avoid getting a towel that is really plush or thick. The basic towels at Walmart work great. I find towels are less expensive than buying yardage of that fabric.
I learned the hard way that pins work much better than clips for this and I also found that using a walking foot helped keep the terry from moving around. I loved the tutorial, thank you! Where did you get your beautiful fabric?

They’re so cute! I like your logo tag. Please make a video on how to make your tag.
You could make matching washcloths with the scraps. Same concept just smaller and square.
I have made these before but they had a gentle curve in the middle. This fits close to the person's neck while burping the baby on their shoulder.
I would have cut that fabric so the flowers are going the length of the burp cloth .... so the flowers are facing up on your shoulder 👍🏼 but that’s just me

Terry cloth

Do you pre wash all your fabric first?
Jan, I love this tutorial. Do you pre-wash your fabrics? I normally don't because I am worried the receiver may think the fabrics are used, what are your thoughts?
If it is a gift, I don't wash the fabric first for the same reason. Especially for projects like this where there will be minimal shrinkage anyway.

Yes of course!
Do you like cotton fabric better or flannel with your Terry cloth for your burp pads?
I like them both. The cotton will get softer the more you launder it. Same with the flanne, which is cotton as well.
I think I may have cut the beautiful floral fabric the direction of the 💐 flowers.

Hi Jan, great tutorial. Do I need to use 2 separate size needles or can I just use the 80/12 all the way through? I am using flannel on one side and terry cloth on the other.
Yes the 80/12 will be just fine.
Is the print fabric Cotton? Or is it Flannel?
I used both
I am a beginner and I tried making a burp cloth rcently. I had problems with my terry cloth bunching up when I sewed the last two stitches in the last step. I'm not sure where I went wrong?
It helps to add extra pins and to hold the bottom fabric a little more firm while sewing.
Do you wash the fabric beforehand?
I don't.

What a great, clear tutorial. Should I prewash my terry and fabric before making? Thank you.
It's always a good idea to pre-wash fabric before sewing if you can. That way everything shrinks the same when washed. These burp clothes, I usually don't pre-wash, but it's totally up to you. If both the top and bottom fabrics are the same fiber content, like cotton, you should be ok to not pre-wash.

This is fantastic. Can you se flannel as well?
Yes. I do all the time.
Would flannel also work instead of cotton
Absolutely. I use flannel for these all the time. There are several in this photo that are made with flannel.
I noticed you do not finish the stitch with an overlock type stitch. Is the edge stitch you used enough to keep the seam allowance from fraying?
Yes.
Excellent as always. Love the masking tape idea. Thank you.
