  • I've had a very late start to the cod fishing season, and this is the first session. The conditions were great- some swell, decent tides and good bait- and it felt good to be out fishing for cod.

    Had 3 trips to Northumberland this winter,,, it's fishin its head off ,, unlike the lancs coast,,, dog fish central at the min. Did find that on each trip the usual full squid was a fail, even on the last trip failed to dig fresh on the neap tides but frozen lug saved the day. Does seem to work well up there piled on.

      Glad you've been finding the fish up here, it's been a tricky start to the season with the fish not following the usual pattern from past years. I've not tried straight squid but add cart to any bait and you're in with a good chance. Tight lines Peter

    Hi buddy,
    I'm going to recommend using something that sounds WEIRD, but it's absolutely amazing for presenting soft baits like cart etc.. and you can make up and fill a couple of dozen of them at home and keep them in a plastic box in the fridge or freezer, ready for immediate no hassle use! = Women's plastic hair curlers! 😉 filled with cart, cut up peeler, fish roe, left over mushy lug including the guts.... anything in fact! Even stuff that you'd normally discard because it's impossible to put on a hook!
    Once filled, wrap with squid fixed with bait elastic before storing or freezing. Theyre an amazing bait plus pesky crabs & small fish can't rob you very easily.
    I haven't gone into fine details which would make this message longer, but you'll work out your own preferences dead easy 😉.
    How do you attach it to a big hook or 2 hooks? = Just think "carp anglers hair rig" for example.
    Kind Regards,
    Phil

    I had to laugh when you grabbed your beer rather than pick up the rod when it knocked 😂
    I used to use 60 or 80lb straight through and 40lb on the leader for closer-in kelp beds. Rubbish for casting but you get your gear back, most of the time...

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  10 месяцев назад

      Surely that's the right order of priorities😂
      I was using 80lb braid straight through, and normally only loose or bend out a hook, but I'm guessing my braid has seen better days for it to keep snapping.

    Just a question though, how are you finding the century smock? Have you had it long enough yet for it to lose its waterproof property? For the money they cost its bloody ridiculous they start leaking so quickly. From what i hear century have had a hell of a lot of complaints so hopefully the next release has addressed this issue

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  9 месяцев назад

      Thanks David.
      For years I've been using old goretex mountaineering jackets that cost around 3 times as much as the Century smock, so have pretty high standards when it comes to waterproofs. I've not had the smock all that long but have been out in some pretty minging weather and it's not let me down, yet. Got to admit though, like the goretex jackets and any breathable fabric, I do re-proof it everytime it goes in the wash.

      @@williamduncan5615 I was using Daiwa JBraid 8x. You can go lighter, I used to use 40lb straight through but had too many people complain on here- an old safety rule of thumb is your leader or mainline should be 10lb Bs Per ounce of weight cast. So I upped it to 80lb since I typically use a 7 oz lead + bait. It can pull the plug out of the sea.

    Never really understood the appeal of shore sea fishing in the UK with breachcasters. Spend a fortune on bait and lose a fortune in tackle on rough ground while casting out big tree trunk sized rods to catch mostly under-sized fish in the pitch black which you don't even know you've hooked until you reel it in.

      It's about making the most of nature and honing your skills to catch what's there, I could say I don't see the appeal of boat fishing as you spend loads on fuel and mooring fees plus theirs an element of danger that doesn't exist on dry/ish land a rock mark won't get lost in fog.
