Today Luke is reviewing the Gen III Cold Weather Fleece Jacket. Military Surplus for the Win!
...it is a bit weird looking....
    ….
Link : eBay will be your best source for these and will offer you the best prices
    Price : $17 - $30. Depending on vender
Color : Foliage Green - I saw a black version online but I couldn’t tell if it was legit issue or not.
Makers : This one made by Tru-Spec but there are other makers out there including Peckham. Rothco has a version of this but I have read that they are not authorized. Knock offs in other words.
From what I understand these are offered only to the army and haven’t been served to the Marines.
Primary Insulation Layer: Worn underneath shell layers or worn as an outer garment in cool conditions.
The GEN III High-Loft Fleece Jacket is the primary insulation layer for use in moderate to cold conditions.
Constructed with Polartec® Thermal Pro® material the insulation on the Level III Jacket creates air pockets that trap air and retain body heat providing outstanding warmth without weight. With excellent breathability, the Level III jacket dries quickly with increased warmth while maintaining lower bulk and increased durability than previous systems.
GEN III Cold Weather Fleece Jacket Features:
Polartec Thermal Pro Material Traps Air and Retains Body Heat
Nylon Reinforcements at the Collar, Shoulders and Elbows
    Zipper Front and Cord Pull
Stretch-Grid Fleece Side Panels adds Comfort and Breathability
High Collar with Full Zipper-Front and Wind Protection Flap
Two Internal Chest Pockets and Two Outer Side Pockets
Ragland Sleeve for Better Range of Motion
    Elastic Sleeve Cuffs
    Low Bulk with Increased Durability
VELCRO® brand fasteners for affixing name, rank and insignia
Increased Warmth with Significantly Less Weight than Previous Generation ECWCS
Level 3 ECWCS - Extended/Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System
    Color: Foliage Green
With a wind jacket and a good base layer I’m comfortable down to 20F with an outer shell to block the wind.
Very comfy jacket. This is not an outer layer. Wind blows right through it. However when used as an under layer below a wind proof jacket
It is excellent. Where a cold wind is not blowing this is not an issue. This jacket is very light and easy to move around in. Size is true to size.
    …..
    Impressions :
This isn’t my favorite fleece jacket in the world but it is certainly different than what you will find on the civilian market. Warm, breathable, good quality, cheap.

I've been wearing the second generation version of this nearly every cold day for the past 6 years. It was probably the single most important component of my clothing system the year I moved back to Chicago (Chiberia) just in time for the winter of the polar vortex.

  • @The_Privateer

it's meant to be a layered - hence it's horrible wind performance. It's designed specifically to be an inner layer under a gortex shell

Being a civil air patrol cadet, we get the air force's old ABUs, and are allowed to wear this overtop of our regular uniform, with or without a gotetex parka. They are in short supply in my wing though, so we have to buy our own. It comes in handy for cold weather training/SAR though.

But you should check out some of the other parts of that military issue cold weather gear like the waffle shirts/pants we get issued(becasue its got a grid pattern fleece liner)...some of the comfyest stuff youll ever wear. heres Amazons link www.amazon.com/Rothco-Gen-Iii-Level-Underwear/dp/B0040RWJ5S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1516505840&sr=8-1&keywords=rothco+gen+III

I will agree this jacket is horrible for the wind unless under something. However they are not that warm, even the actual issue version again unless under other garments. And the NSN is different depending on the size.

I have the green and the coyote ones. They are comfy and warm, but def look dorky as hell in public. I like them for outdoor gear. You can see some of the guys in Alone using the green ones on a couple seasons.

For a few years I’ve been running the usmc polartec 300 fleece. In functionality it is similar to this army one that you have. It’s easily the warmest fleece I’ve ever owned. Also terrible against the wind. I use it as a stand-alone only in late spring and early fall. The usmc fleece has the mesh pouches as well. I understand that they are good places to keep gloves and hats.
If it’s really cold out I’ll wear a navy poly turtleneck (it’s like under armor) then the fleece and finally an alpha industries m65 jacket.

  • @__BERSERKER__

I believe that black ones are better made and warmer. The black ones are better as a stand alone garment and warmer when used in conjunction with a outer shell garment.

    • @__BERSERKER__
      @__BERSERKER__ 6 лет назад

however they are heavier and thicker. The green may be better in warmer weather like above freezing. Below freezing the black (bear suit) is by far a better choice.

(I like flecktarn, so sue me :-) )They look good too. You ought to try G7 Instant coffee 3-in-one sachets. It's very good, but you need to use two as the serving size for one packet is 1/3 cup.

    • @HoosierRallyMaster

Gen III means it's part of the Third Generation of the Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS). The system includes base layers, mid layers (like this one reviewed) and windproof/waterproof shell layer.

The matching fleece pants dont completely suck either(when worn with the pant outer shell..).
