It’s hard to believe this movie came out 32 years ago, loved it then and now, one of my favorites. I was shocked to see so many people my age haven’t seen it, this is one of the ones on my daughters must watch movies list... I was a teen back then and I still remember Katie’s words “See that's all I want to do Billy-Boy. I want to leap of this pier and fly high in the air hang with the wind and drift through the clouds, and at night, with the Moon full and the sea wild, I meet my lover high on a cliff and we'd swoop down into the ocean and swim all the way touch the bottom up through the dark water and break the surface. Then we'd fly to Jamaica for Pina Colatas... God, I wish I could do that.” Bill knows exactly what to do as soon as he remembered their time at the pier, the pony being pushed into the water made her sad. After all these years I can remember this touching movie like it was yesterday. This story is one that I’ve held close to my heart, and the soundtrack is super. ❤️ “I love you Billy Boy!
This is one of my all-time favorite coming-of-age movies. The performances were amazing and the story was unforgettable & heart-touching. The soundtrack was so precious & beautiful. Too bad that Stealing Home is such an underrated film. Whenever I mention it to people they don't seem to know and when I recommend them to watch it they end up loving it so much. Always saying this movie didn't have the proper adorations & appreciation that it deserved.
After all these years and watching it countless times... I am speechless. I believe David foster found a way for everyone to actually feel the emotions they were watching. Brilliant
I met David Foster's song at St. Elmo's Fire and met his music again in this movie. When I bought the OST without knowing it at all at that time, I was impressed by the name of David Foster, these two OSTs are still my treasures.
I watched this classic movie just today (October 29, 2023). I wasn't even born when this film came out. I was born 5 years later in October (October 6) 1993. This film was suggested to me by an Australian friend of mine over Facebook. She's much older than me and a wise individual. That's why I decided to give this a watch. I have to say, this is one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen in cinema (so far). This scene will be etched into my memory as long as I live. The soundtrack is so beautiful. It multiplies the beauty of this scene tenfold. Amazing acting performances especially by Jodie Foster and Mark Harmon and the young William McNamaran too !!!!!! Loved this movie.
One of the best movies i'v ever seen.. so underated cinematically..but so beautiful, poignant and a movie that has been close to my heart since i was 12...a treasure..
I tried and tried to make a remark here about what this movie means to me, but I am - like many - without words. I just love this movie. Classic, epic. This is one of the very few movies that has been a gift from the producers to us.
@@paulthompson9668 : 65 years old as of my father: " Hey kid, if you dont like this film you just do not know of the rest, this is a 10 film, just FOCUS and do not hear, listen to every word each say."I ALWAYS cry this film.Dont you?
This film definitely got me in tears the first time I saw it too. I still get tears in my eyes😭 every time I watch it. This is such a beautiful movie & too bad they don't make heartfelt films anymore.
There are amazing movies and then there are films that remind us of living life. Stealing Home reminds me of being young and everything that involves living a life. Love this movie and New Jersey.
Well said. I echo your sentiments. This sequence and the one by the gazebo (reflecting on Katie's leaving) had an emotional impact. The movie was terribly underrated. I just know that this was autobiographical :-D
I love this movie I watched it like 15 years ago and habe been trying to find it again I couldn't remember the name of it and then I'm turning the channels on my tv and boom that it was on TCM now I no the name Stealing Home one of my favorite movies makes me cry but I love it
Very wisdom words, justice8424. That is exactly how I perceive this movie. It's possibly underrated nowadays, but I remember a big buzz following its release in 1988.
I fell on my knees and cried the first time I saw this scene... I was only in Junior High at the time, and some how it spoke to me of something larger..
The one thing I thought of when Billy flung her ashes toward the sea, is that some of them landed on the gulls. So, for me, Katie will be able to fly forever.
Sadly, there are so many people that never heard of Stealing Home. Many of them I recommend to watch & later on they say to me: "This movie is such hidden treasure that no one knows about. Or these remarks: "Beautiful film & so underrated and it isn't played in television often. Too bad because Stealing Home deserves a better treatment.
@Kansaspop besides being a very underated actor, Mark Harmon--- the son of the great football player Tommy Harmon ---- was a great athlete in his own right as the QB for UCLA. I enjoy him on NCIS as well. Yes I also thought this was one of Jodie Foster best performances too.
@pablollajta The REAL fans of movies like you and me are the ones who know what's truly great, and this magnificent film is certainly that...it may have been underrated for years, but, if for nothing else, it is finally getting its just recognition here on a popular site

80s films utilized the sax in music montages to show resolution in the story. not anymore. kind of like how movie trailers used to say "in a world". the device itself became trite with overuse.

I love❤️ this Movie🎬 but I Never understand why Katie didn’t stay with Billy after they finally made love? Or why he let her go? I felt so bad when she killed herself🥵 And to kill herself in the very same vacation house where her&billy finally got together and they both seemed happy. She must have been very troubled and regretted the choices she made after her&billy got together. So Sad:(
Yes. She committed suicide by a self-inflicted gun shot. Very sad. Probably this whole story was semi-autobiographical on the basis of the a, and/or both screenwriter's adolescences; back in the 60's on the Jersey Shore is what I'm guessing here?

A very very underrated movie. Chick flick with baseball inputted into it. 43 male here and I actually really liked it when I saw it as a kid on vhs
