Just how strong is a milk crate?

- The answer is: Probably strong enough for anything you can imagine putting on it. I'm no engineer, but my redneck math tells me these things are shockingly sturdy.
I'm building a cistern for a man-made pond and the design required me to find a way to store about 3000 gallons of water underground.
The "go to the store and buy it" solution to this problem in the pond world is a product called a water matrix block, also known as an aquablock or soakaway crate.
But those are REALLY EXPENSIVE! As I write this, they're more than $2/gallon of storage. I looked into all kinds of other possible solutions like plastic pallets, culvert pipes, industrial storage totes, rainwater tanks, and other oddball products I could re-purpose.
But the solution I kept coming back to was milk crates. They're cheap, relatively easy to come by, and-as I just learned-STRONG AS HELL!
I bought 400 of them from a pig farmer (yep, really!) and this is a video of me punishing them to see what they can take.

I've heard Greg Wittstock say in one of his videos they actually used to use egg crates before they started selling aqua Blocks. Now that they sell aqua blocks they have all of their "parrots" trained to believe eggcrates are inferior. Aquascapes marketing hype is some powerful stuff.
Yes, I've heard him mention that before too.
Im using them for step aerobics. This video definitely made me feel safer about it thank you!
Thank you for the excellent video. It gave me the information I needed for my pond project. Very strong, will give it a try in my pond project.
thanks for the vid. That’s about 450kg load per milk crate. Impressive. Just started using them for a cheap aquarium stand. I am a mechanical engineer. They are excellent at distributing a load when upside down. I have a simple way of finding an aquarium base, non-scientific. I ask myself can I comfortably stand on this base for a long time? I know my weight so it is not too hard to guess the strength of a base. A milk crate is way stronger than its milk carrying capacity. If you imagine the crate full of full glass milk bottles you can easily estimate its design capacity not including safety factors. The safety factor is enormous.
If I would not stand on it there is no way I would put an aquarium on it.
this is a great alternative for something like a small pond for wildlife out in the middle of nowhere
Thanks for actually doing the test to prove it works for all us cheap bastards!! 😉
Thanks for sharing. This will save me money.
I love the idea of the milk crate.
How much water would that hold if they were stacked
I use the real deep dishtrays that are plastic and in water constantly anyway. I flip them over and stack them. they go into a groove and can hold alot of water. I got them for free. Industrial dishwater trays.the real deep ones.
I love the milk crate idea. Same thing, but a lot cheaper.
I'm using 17 of them tomorrow
The test is milkcrates on a cement slab. What do you think will happen with crates on a dirt base? Aquacrates have more surface support on the bottom compared to milk crates. Time and pressure the milk crates will knife into the ground?
Properly tampered, I dont think there would be an issue
Fantastic!! Can I add a link to this in my aquablox alternative video? This is going to help so many people👍
Absolutely. No need to ask-I'll always take a link. And I must have missed your video. Can you link me to it? I'll put it in the video description.
Cheers mate👍 here’s the link to the video on the alternatives (one of which is identical to aquablox for half price). Aquablox alternatives
ruclips.net/video/z5q24EXMgcc/видео.html but after watching your test I think if people can pick up the milk crates cheap that’s the way to go 👍
@@kevinwhitmore4401 Done!
Hmm, makes me really think twice about defaulting to aquablocks. I have 3' and 4' boulders to set
milk crates are super heavy duty
What is the model of you mini-excavator? The mini-excavator don't look that big and I'm surprised you are able to move and place such large rocks with it.
Are u still working on this ping fella? It’s been a while since you posted a vid???
Why didn't you completely slack the strap then? It's still supporting a lot of weight as you have it.
I think you missed the part where I shook the straps to show they weren't supporting any weight.
@@TylerTervooren nope, I didn't. You can wiggle straps like that and they can can still be supporting hundreds of pounds. Slack them completely until they bend a bit, but will still serve as a safety line if the creates give way.
@@blaircox1589 are you ok?
Not sure if it was a good idea to show "property of" stamp on the side of the crate. LOL
Yes as in the effed up world we live in there are probably milk crate police.
aquascape products are such a con ! I live in the UK, and been looking in too a pump vault and aquascape wanna charge me over £500 for essentially a plastic Bin.
I wouldn't call them a con-it's a good product for a specific application. I just think most of us DIYers don't fit that application and can do just as well with alternative products.
