The wetland filter is (mostly) planted, but did I screw it up?
Between being stupid busy with other projects and stupid sick with whatever my daughter keeps bringing home from preschool, finishing the pond has been delayed... again. But the bog is now planted. I think I made a construction mistake, though. Whoops.

The Pond Plants are in and the fire pit is here!
Просмотров 3 тыс.Год назад
Pond plants arrived. Even more are coming. Can't believe I forgot to mention the lilies. And I bought a cheap fire pit with legs to test. If it works, I'll have a custom one built. Oh, and I built a path.
Backyard Water Garden: October Update (Muddy Water!)

A million little updates. More edging complete, aeration is in, fire pit patio is done (but missing a fire pit...), plants are on the way, and bridge build has begun. Oh, and the pond is full of mud!
Swim Pond Update: It's SO CLOSE to Done
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Год назад
Yep, I'm still alive. Everyone in the house has been trading a cold/flu for a month and I've been busy working on other things around the property that needs done before fall sets in, but wanted to share an update that many of you have been asking for. So let's take a little tour of the pond and the rest of the property.
Edging the swim pond and hiding the liner

In this video, I'll walk through how I'm hiding the liner around the edge of the pond, specifically the area around the waterfall where leaks are common.

The Negative Edge Waterfall Lives!

Took 19 months to turn on the wetland falls. Took a week to get the negative edge falls going. Here's a walkthrough of the (3!) waterfalls that spill into the reservoir.

The waterfall: IT LIVES!

Only took 18 months to get here. Here it is! This is the falls from the wetland filter to the pond. There will be another ripple falls from the pond to the negative edge reservoir that is *almost* complete.
Swim Pond Update: External Pump is plumbed and ready to fire up!

Come on a quick tour of the plumbing for the external pump & learn a few important things I picked up about these types of pumps.
Backyard Water Garden: Can you use a sewer backwater valve as a check valve?
Просмотров 6222 года назад
I needed a 3 inch "swing only" (no spring) check valve for the suction line on my external pump. I couldn't find any locally, and the ones online were all $75 , which made no sense to me. So I found this on Amazon (and later at several local hardware stores) and tested it out? Will it work?

Hi, I'm building a fish pond and right now I'm dealing with a problem with the wetland filter. I want to DIY it and I need some advice. Can I use fresh quarry stone for the bottom two layers of stones or is it better to just use river gravel?

I just about never comment on videos, but I had to login to say WOW! I'm a big fan of your falls--I appreciate that they are wide and shallower, with smaller 'steps'. They look amazingly natural, and that is the highest accomplishment in my opinion. I've bookmarked your video as a reference for my own build. Thanks for sharing!

The test is milkcrates on a cement slab. What do you think will happen with crates on a dirt base? Aquacrates have more surface support on the bottom compared to milk crates. Time and pressure the milk crates will knife into the ground?

I use the real deep dishtrays that are plastic and in water constantly anyway. I flip them over and stack them. they go into a groove and can hold alot of water. I got them for free. Industrial dishwater trays.the real deep ones.

thanks for the vid. That’s about 450kg load per milk crate. Impressive. Just started using them for a cheap aquarium stand. I am a mechanical engineer. They are excellent at distributing a load when upside down. I have a simple way of finding an aquarium base, non-scientific. I ask myself can I comfortably stand on this base for a long time? I know my weight so it is not too hard to guess the strength of a base. A milk crate is way stronger than its milk carrying capacity. If you imagine the crate full of full glass milk bottles you can easily estimate its design capacity not including safety factors. The safety factor is enormous. If I would not stand on it there is no way I would put an aquarium on it.
