Six years later, this umbrella set up is by far, the cheapest, most portable, manageable, and effective sun shade, for my son and me’s Hobie fishing kayaks to date!☝️😎✊
@@KayakhacksFishing I agree about the PVC being a great idea. We tried attaching those umbrellas directly to the Hobie seats and they were all fails for various reasons.
We just did this and ordered from Amazon. Look at stroller umbrellas. They work great. we built a pvc base around our crate then cable tied the piece if pvc the clamp goes on. The base in the crate adds some stability. We don't explain hacks rather our channel focuses on the experience if kayaking for the middle aged and seniors who might be intimated at first. You can see a pic on the kayaknana channel so you're welcome to show folks our method if you'd like. Great minds think alike. We have an Native Ultimate 14.5 too. Love it.
I looked at a video of the bugaboo parasol. Does it come with a round clamp that will fit a PVC pipe? The vid seemed to only have a rectangle made for the bugaboo stroller. If so, what size? Also, if you have an Ulitimate 14.5, you should look at my vid on how to make it recoverable if it flips. You never know what will happen with the whitecaps and powerboats up there on Jordan Lake!
I use a adventure canopies sun shade . It does not get in my way of fishing and covers most my. body all day . Its great . I have it mounted on my feelfree lure 11.5 . I could not be more happier .
I have a close setup but i use a golf umbrella and it serves two ways one shade and two as a sail on a windy day just use it to block the wind from you just like rain not real fast but has helped get back to the ramp when a buddy hurt his back and could not paddle
I own one of those! Picked it up a few years back at Bargain Hunt. I LOVE IT! I've use it when fishing from my PELICAN PEDAL BOAT MONACO DLX (See SPECIAL TIP BELOW FOR THE LADIES). Also have used it on my VESPA scooter during a pull over lunch break roadside. Of course it's great for lawn chair mounts, ice cooler mounts, and those little "bring-it-with-ya" wagons for pier or bank fishing. AND HERE'S THE BEST TIP OF ALL...You can buy one of those one person privacy popup canopy tents. Cut it off short enough that you can still sit in your boat comfortable. Pull it down over the Versabrella Sunbrella and...you have an INSTANTLY PRIVATE way to keep from leaving your small boat, canoe, or kayak to rid yourself of all the cold liquids you've drank during the summers heat. I give ya'll this tip because it's hard for ladies out fishing all day when nature calls and a "Powder Room" is NO WHERE CLOSE BY. 🙊🙉🙈😉. Trust me ladies, IT'S HEAVENLY 😇!
Great idea. You are the PVC King my friend! I tried that this past winter on my Slayer but just attached it to the seat supports. Did not work. The PVC is the trick. Liked it so much I went to order it only to find that WM nor Amazon have it in stock. I'll keep looking. Thanks for all the tips. Nice Red too. Maybe you should do a K Hack show on cooking a Red for those of us inland for the summer, just to get our mouths watering. :-)
Ouch on the availability. I know when I got mine from WM, I had to order it online and then pickup in the store. I just looked at both stores... holy moley! Must have been a run on these since I made the video a few weeks ago. The secret is the huge clamp. I will do another vid on the cheap $7 version. It kinda works, but if you bend it too much, it snaps off. Cooking? Whoa... it gets pretty bad to take chef tips from me! Now that I am retired, I give my wife a break and cook once a week. Some of the results have not been pleasant - but I keep plugging away!
Great tip, I just purchased the same one for my Riot Mako 12. Not sure why you need the pvc, mine clamps on to the corner of the seat frame, looks like yours would do the same.
I have the same umbrella in the regular size. I was searching RUclips to find tips on how people successfully adjust the umbrella without the clamp becoming loose. Your video may have been more helpful if you had clearly shown where you had affixed the umbrella and demonstrated how the three pivot points function.
just to let you know another brother the top spins 360 Degrees separate from the shaft might save you from having the second piece of PVC I've been using one of my kayak for about a year now
@@KayakhacksFishing found those on the target website n loved how it can be positioned anywhere...and how the top can spin to put the longest part in front of you....
Its been a couple of years since this was posted and I was wondering how did it work out for you? Do you still use the umbrella now that you changed kayaks? When the Versa-brella first came out, they were kind of too expensive to experiment with. They came down since then and I got one this near the end of this past summer. By the time figured out how to paint it to relatively match my kayak and actually got around to doing it, it was already fall. So I won't get a chance to try it out until next year because now its "kayak maintenance season" here already.
Given the winds on the coast, I rarely use it. I do want to install the PVC holder for next season since it is great on the rare calm day... just never got around to doing it on the new kayak!
That's usually my biggest problem too when I go out is the wind. I've turned into a one big sail on many occasions. Unfortunately, I only have such a narrow window of when I can go out that I have to take what nature dishes out on any given day. Hopefully this coming summer it will be a little calmer than it was this year. I don't know what happened this year, but the fishing was lousy, the winds were bad almost every time and it was waaaaaay too hot! The new Versa-Brella might take care of the most of the "too hot" problem, but it won't unskunk me!!!
It works ok with light wind...just to make an estimate, 5 mph and below. Anything stronger and I believe it will just flop around. I have only used this on days with a light or no breeze as those are the sweltering days.
Because the shape is asymmetrical, it seems like it should be pretty stable in breezes -- the shorter side will end up pointing into the wind with the longer side pointing downwind. One should be careful to keep that longer side downwind as the wind increases. I have the El Cheapo version as was disappointed to find that it had a very crummy clamp AND lacked the elbow in the middle of the main arm which the Sportsbrella version has.
I actually used your idea with the 1 1/4 in pvc for my GoPro I had gone to home depot but they were out of the reducer so I went to Lowe’s and succeeded I will let you know how it works out great idea
You know you can drop your kayak at the last water pump station on the left as you head out to the northern end, pay to park at the last lot by the hotel and then walk back to slide the yak into the marsh at that end?
I rarely go back there, but a crabber told me there are schools of reds if you know where to find them. Sadly, I don't. Only caught one red back there.
Light wind was not a problem with ours. Because it's adjustable, you can lean it into a headwind or back for a tailwind. You need to remember it's on there though. We ran our into the trees day 1, haha.
It is the Native Ultimate 14.5. It looks like a 1/2 canoe with low sides. I recommend against this model since it is very difficult to self recover in the event you flip.

Very good idea, a lot cheaper than a proper kayak shad, well done, love the show.
Thanks! Appreciate it!
I have this same umbrella in blue. And just bought my kayak. Been studying mods. And you sir 👍🏻 gave me a great ideal.
Glad I could help!
Like the idea... when the wind is low. I tried this is Texas, on a windy day. I almost wound up in Mexico. On the other hand, I found a sail option...
lol! I only use it when the wind is less than 6 mph for that very reason!
I have an inflatable kayak, and have used an umbrella as a sail.

Another awesome tip! The PVC pipe is a great idea. I have a cheap academy clip on my yak for Offshore fishing but the clip always falls off lol.
The only downside is I can only use it on calm days.

From OBX but stuck in Central Texas. Do you think the XL would be too large? I'm tired of it being 105 with a UV index of 10.
It all depends on how you can attach it. If you secure it well, it would work. However, you would have more problems with wind.

Hi! What size PVC did you use or suggest? Thanks!
I used 3/4" but I would recommend going up to 1" to get a better clamp grip

Would this work on a boat traveling at 5 mph? There’s a lot of reviews saying the clamps fail in the wind thanks to whoever answers
I guess it would depend on the angle of travel vs angle of any wind. I use it stationary and 5 mph is not an issue.
Are you still using this umbrella is that the smaller or bigger version?
I am using the regular size - tinyurl.com/hlmwhdh

I have the same concept but I put it direct to my seat won't ruin your seat
Yes, I initially clamped it to my seat, but found the clamp rubbed on my back. It works, but I decided to move it to the independent spot
and on windy day doubles as a sail
then I'm going to try that way thank you

I would trim that HD tye wrap and file it flat before you slice yourself open. It's not fun when you do that.

Next Question. Used it during a storm yet?
No - I only use it when the wind is less than around 7 mph. Otherwise, it flops. I guess I would pull it out if it started to rain without the wind.
You know there is an umbrella deer hunters use that the wind has little effect on. It has baffles. They need to use them in theirs too.
I need to try one of those. Thx!

Sorry to hear that. I wonder if they changed the construction. Mine is still fine.
Looks kind of backwards. More shade over the back than front.
Good point! Just mount it backwards! Thanks
a PVC pipe mounted Horizontally would make it possible to have the umbrella on both sides of the seat instead of having two PVC pipes on both sides
Good idea... I need to look at the clamp to see if it has the range of motion to support that.
And I also have the Same umbrella
