The "Clark W Griswold" version got a laugh from me. Like some of the Apple products which are more about form rather than function or reliability. The cyber truck really highlights bringing a concept drawing to life without the usual engineering reality check.

I think Elon could use the Canyonaro commercial for the cybertruck
I think that for the first times in years Musk was being more honest with the problems that Tesla might be facing which can affect negatively its stock price. In previous quarterly earnings Musk has contantly painted a really rosy picture of Teslas future. It seems that the problems are now big enough that Musk knows there is no point in hiding the truth when it comes to making the Cybertruck.

I have always wanted to buy a 5 tonne, 2 door ute that has a 20kg load capacity and can only travel 100 kilometres before I need to refuel, with the added benefit of spontaneously erupting in fire when you look at it the wrong way.
The Lightnings on the lots is not a rumour. At our local medium sized Ford dealership, there are 34 of them currently on the lot. All of them are discounted 5K-8K, and they just aren't moving.
The one I saw when I last visited the cost half as much as my house. The dealer was making no effort to sell either, no test drives, and making fun of their absurd uselessness as an actual work vehicle. This is a vanity truck for city people except it's too big to drive in the city. Who's the target demographic?
At least the F-150 Lightening is a pickup in form and has a bed you can actually use. It's still not selling now that cost of batteries hit reality. Still a potential thermal runaway.
EV's are becoming increasingly difficult to insure here in the UK, especially after the Luton multi storey inferno that the media tried to play off as a diesel fire.

I never understood how something with so many sharp edges could be compatible with whatever the pedestrian collision rules are (and I fess up I have no real knowledge of them) when we already have soft bonnets (= hoods) that sometimes need to pop-up, plus plastic covers over the engines to limit pedestrian head impact damage. How does hitting them with a nice sharp stainless steel edge improve the situation?
Now we also learn that the build tolerances need to be super-tight to avoid the whole thing looking wonky... so what happens following repair after a small (or large!) bump, or simply after bouncing around in the rough for a few years...are these things all going to look twisted and saggy? Nice resale value.
On top of that....4 tonnes??
End of.
How many rural US and Aussie wooden bridges can take that weight?
It was never going into mass production, it doesn't even have door handles 😂
I thought the same, about the least pedestrian friendly shape you could invent. We are all accustomed to seeing concept cars without ugly licence plates or other small details absent, but the Cybertruck took it to another level. Videos showing a very overweight all wheel drive vehicle dragging a relatively light 2WD pickup backwards were a desperate move. Ironically that 2WD truck has probably covered 200,000 miles doing useful things since the video was made..
@@g0fvt it's just a marketing gimmick.
Trucks aren't great for pedestrian collision, the grill and hood are just too high on most of them.

It is heavy...therefore it is an environmental travesty 🙂
Such genius!
A passenger train car empty weight is about two ton per seat of capacity; and most of the world claims rail is the top answer to environmental woes (even though it is not).

@@Sabundy absolutely - he is the king of false promised and exaggerated claims. The list of failures is staggering.
He's been promising full self driving since 2014.
What I find interesting are the tolerances in fifty year old vehicles with panel gaps that could be 1/2" or more, trim that was not precisely fitted - vehicles made by human beings on the production line and it didn't matter, they are industrial design works of art unlike the EPA inspired jelly beans that dominate the roadways today.
Cybertruck rhymes with clusterf*&k. There is always that going for it ))
A friend of mine is a professional flautist. Paid a fortune for a handmade flute with stainless steel keywork. Excellent flute - until things wear or move. Brought it to me - I can’t repair it, took it to one of the top repairers - he can’t fix it. Took it to the guy who made it - he can’t repair it either.
I've been (a)counting and Musk will be on his fifth CFO. Being CFO of one of the world's biggest market cap companies should be a dream job, but they all quit. There's something toxic in Tesla's accounting that scares them off. The Legal Counsels also last a very short time.
Car manufacturing has historically been a horribly risky business. Even Japanese manufacturer Nissan was weeks away from bankruptcy in the 90s. I know Tesla is giving high returns for investors, but going it alone and making this from scratch, unlike other brands that share chassis and engine, is incredibly risky.
Tesla gives no returns to investors. Tesla has not paid a single dividend since the company was floated, 13 years ago. From an investment perspective, Tesla stocks are purely a speculative investment.
Tesla only makes returns given a greater fool, theory. Zero real ROI for investors, as in speculative value only.
What sucks is taking risks with tax payer dollars which is subsidizing this crap.
Kind of hard to call Tesla any kind of success when their profit margins are based on taxpayer subsidies. EV's are a taxpayer funded boondoggle that aren't economically viable anymore than all the other green energy scams.
Excesses of the stock market are the Greater Fool Fallacy in action.. before one of the great crashes happen, of course
If the cybertruck proves to be un-insurable then early adopters will perhaps be limited in the amusement they can derive from their acquisition to, say, checking the thermal stability of the 10 micron-accurate panel gaps on a piece of incendiary ordinance parked (hopefully) at the very end of their driveway. Setting up a system to log the gaps could be an interesting technical side-line, especially if one wants to continue the experiment all the way up to the anticipated 2000 degrees C.
Tesla has their own internal car insurance division. They will likely step up if normal insurance companies refuse to cover Cybertruck.
@@0HOON0 It will be interesting to see what happens but here in the UK there are already Tesla owners who have had continuation of their current policies refused recently. Reportedly some have had refusals from all the other companies approached while others have only gained insurance by paying premiums in excess of £5000/year. The issue is not confined to Tesla of course but is affecting EVs & hybrids more widely.
Cybertruck is still a joke all these years later.
The reason why electric pickups are still not popular is due to towing. When towing, the battery gets drained very quickly. Recharging the battery takes a lot more time than filling up a tank. If your range falls under 100km, this could be a problem in remote parts of the US, such as Alaska, where people carry canisters of additional fuel.
Not just Alaska, you can get range anxiety in the wilds of Washington state (Channeled Scablands), Texas, etc. I even found towns in Nebraska and South Dakota that did not have gas stations much less charging stations. Some states have stations that are not open on Sunday, too. I was on a 140,000 acre ranch outside of Alpine, Texas and they only had 120 volts. The nearest charging station was 60 miles away.
@@johncooper4637 Thus my main gripe with EVs. Living in Nevada I'll likely need to carry a huge generator with me for an emergency charger. Then again EV evangelists are city people who spend an hour driving 10 miles. They are willfully ignorant of what the rest of the country has to deal with.
I'm not even in the "country" anymore; the city expanded into my valley. Even still, with the amount of traffic there is and the amount of extra driving and sitting I keep having to do to get around wrecks and traffic jams I just wouldn't trust an EV to be able to get me home, especially if I'm having to use the climate control for hours while I wait for recovery services to pull their thumbs outta their butts and move the wreck. This has been getting exponentially worse the last couple years in my neck of the woods, right at the time everyone's trying to convince us to go electric. An electric vehicle for me would be right on the edge of it's range capabilities, but I'm pretty sure it'd work with no traffic jams (at least while the battery is new and still holds a good charge), but oh, Mom wants me to go out of my way to pick her up on the way home? Now it's out of range. Interstate backed up and now you have to drive the extra 30 mile back roads? Well, too bad, you don't have enough range. Go home and miss work. Oh, you were trying to come home from work when traffic stopped? Well you don't have the extra range to go around, so just find somewhere to be a shoulder hazard until traffic clears out and hope no one mows you down. Plus, time is one of the most stretched thin resources I have, but they want me to spend hours of it just waiting for my car to refuel? Get real. I can't afford the downtime. If I need the car now, I need it now.
They have range extender add-on...
I perused some 2nd hand Teslas for sale recently. I saw 2 x Model S, both for sale since January, one with a $23,000 price drop, one with $20,000 drop. And a 2019 Model 3 with a $16,000 price drop. There's a Model 3 performance for $45,500, that thing was $90k or so new.
Damn that's some depreciation.
In other news, I've talked my cousin into an MG4 Excite 51 on a novated lease with your mob. NLA, hope she likes it.
I always thought that there would never be a second hand market for EVs. The cost of a replacement battery after owning one for a short time depending on the EV age. In the UK a 120,000 pound EV after 3 years , can only get 62,000, not to mention the cost of EV insurance.

Always entertaining to watch the aftermath of anything Tesla. So many "can't do wrong" types and oh so many "I'll die first" detractors. Always entertaining. As always, time will tell.
If I remember correctly, shortly after Jeeezus breaking the unbreakable side window live on stage Tesla said quietly that the Cybertruck would be reclassified as a heavy truck. This would mean that they could skip certain safety testing and would not have to declare the battery range. Owners in the US would have to get a license to drive a heavy truck. If this is still the case how many of those pre fanboy owners will evaporate……. And as Tesla are heavily subsidised by the US government, are they asking for their money back…..hence the tears.
You are wrong about needing a different drivers license to drive a Cybertruck, in the US. A Class C (standard drivers license) allows you to drive a vehicle up to 26,000 lbs. So I can drive my 19,000 lb. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating motor home with just a regular license.
There is no difference in the license required in the US for the class change....... Most states don't even change the registration price either, but some do. The license changes at class 7 and 8 and raising the Cybertruck from 2a, to 2b or 3 has nothing to do with your drivers license. It never will either..... A regular drivers license is Class 1 thru 6..... (Less than 6000 pounds to 26,000 with hydraulic brakes) Class 7 is a grey area that might require a class 8 license depending an braking system, class 8 is a CDL license. So, no, no one needs a new license to drive the Cybertruck in the US, and they never will either. You are sadly, and massively, misinformed......
I wouldn't be so smug to say "... they never will either." All it will take is for a commie State, err I mean nanny State like California to reclassify such a truck to cause the need for a CDL. Once CA does it, others will follow suit rather quickly. With the BS CA has done to roof top solar on single family homes & currently (Nov 2, 2023) quickly & quietly trying to do to PV roof top solar on multi-family, small farm, and small business. It wouldn't shock me to see CA reclassify vehicles like the Cyber Truck. Why would they do this? To get more money from registration fees/taxes to help off set the increased road maintenance cost the heavier vehicles cause. Currently there are not as many vehicles in that weight class on the road as there are predicted to be in the near future due to EV's. This increase needs an increase in fees/taxes to offset the increase in road damage they cause. They are already working on instituting a per mile taxation for this very reason, this tax scheme is not predicted to be enough of an increase. As a bulk of the road maintenance funds comes from the registration fees/taxes. Not just from the gas tax that the per mile taxation is designed to replace. So you may very well need a CDL to drive such a vehicle in the near future.
lol. Such unimginable ignorance on your parts. No such animals in american states re driving nothing but actual freight trucks of massive sizes
I may be mis-remembering but I remember Honda was renowned for their build quality back in the 90's because their standard for build quality was a variance in the shut lines of no more than 2mm...or 2000 microns. Musk wants 200x less.
Someone smarter than me may be able to correct me on this: In a vehicle you actually don't want super-tight tolerances (sub mm) on parts that are exposed to all types of forces and variances, such as body panels, so that they have room to move and "breathe"; does this sound right? It's kind of like how skyscrapers are designed to sway and plane wings are designed to flex.
On a c class licence here in Australia is 4500kgs. So you need a LR licence to drive it legally will a full car load.
Cybertruck=one huge expensive marketing tool direct from the addled brain of one huge tool
Sidenote gotta love it when billionaires beg for more sympathy *ahem cough cough* I mean money
Don't know too much about car engineering but awhile back I watched a documentary about car safety. Well they mentioned that a big part of the improvement in safety in modern cars has to do with crumble zones that absorb a lot more energy in a crash as compared to older cars that were built like tanks. I'm wondering if this Cybertruck which Elon has described as a tank might have unnecessarily compromised the safety of the drivers that may find themselves in a car crash in these Cybertrucks tanks.
Yeah was thinking that too- especially about being required to be able to run into a pedestrian at low speed and not injure them- with an all aluminium front?
The old cars had a crumple zone too, the poor unfortunate 'nut' behind the wheel.
The issue with older cars was they were full frame vehicles. This causes the shock forces to be transmitted to the soft squishy things ( humans) in it. The quarter panels acted like a crumple zones during oblique collisions. Now with the way they are building the batteries as part of the frame, imagine how many will be totaled by low speed collisions due to cost of repair alone. Then there's tge fact that once batteries are compromised they can become high tech Roman candles randomly.
Maybe the aluminium in the front is very thin?
Every car they have made has taken fist place in car safety. Why would this one be different.
Musk is the gift that keeps on giving. LOLs galore.
I always tough the Cybertruck was nothing more than a publicity stunt to raised the price of the stock. It did work on that front.
No doubt!
The Dame Edna of cars, god bless !
I saw a Canadian on youtube who got so fed up with Tesla and the non delivery of electric trucks that he set up his own company called "Edison" and built the first prototype inside a year, further more the first trailer it pulled was over 100,000 pounds that's about 47 tons . Further more it not only has batteries for power but it's own onboard diesel generator which unlike the ones on trains runs at a constant speed 1800 rpm to re-charge the batteries and give extra p[ower when needed.
You need to be careful when reading stuff about the Edison as the math also does not add up in areas and it to is down to plain physics. The truck is still powered by fossil fuel, diesel, and whether or not it would use less of that than a standard diesel powered truck is not a given.

I actually think Elon Musk's honest appraisal of the issues his company faces is a breath of fresh air. The empty promises and lies that the likes of Toyota, Ford, and GM's (plus others ) management spout are designed to fend off criticism from frustrated investors.
As far as the "production hell" , Elon said the same thing about scaling up production of the model 3. That seemed to work out for him in the end, and I'm picking that this current situation will be just another bump in the road for Tesla.
Yeah. Better to have an entity like Tesla, rather than VW or Chrysler.
The model 3 production hasn't caught up to demand from the American factory. Production is plagued by late and defective parts and the fault rate of new Tesla model 3's, is not going down. When they released the Semi they only sold them to Pepsi-Co (and Fritos I think), I'm guessing on the cheap with a strict NDA such that no details got out. Pepsi-Co could use it for green wash marketing and Tesla could pretend they where selling trucks. Smart move to avoid the bad press of an independent review.
It's going to be much harder to do that with CyberTruck, this is going to get to independent customers, some of them are going to try off road with this thing. Fun times.
Jay Leno did a puff piece on the Tesla semi.
Check out the Canadian mob Called Edison motors and their hybrid logging truck.
re: "Pepsi-Co could use it for green wash Tesla could pretend they (were) selling trucks..." yes I'm afraid that's all it is, and I've been saying this since the first Semis were delivered. it's all a GIANT RUSE, the advertising expense the fan boys claim Tesla Corp "doesn't have" is actually being spent RIGHT THERE. yeah, and the additional way everyone will know it's a SCAM is actually when you DON'T see in 1, 2, and 3 years time very many Semis showing up in the hands of other operators (remember legit Fleets sizes here in 'Murica can range anywhere from 50 to 500 trucks +/-)...
Okay, so even with 4680 (which has yet be successfully ramped) It simply takes TOO MANY BATTERIES to build a ~900 kWh pack for a Long Range Semi. it also takes too many batteries for even a 400 kWh Short Range model, once you recognize the ADDITIONAL battery (power) requirements in the form of on-site Mega Packs and Mega Chargers needed just in order to deploy a SINGLE truck. i won't even go into the Li-Ion battery fire hazard this poses to businesses and the public, since you've already seen over 100+ different stories in the news the past 5 years (ref: Nikola Tre)...
Gentlemen (and ladies) the Pepsi-Co yard in Modesto California is simply a "Technology Demonstrator" that was partly funded to the tune of $15 Million Dollars taken from Tax Payers by CARB (California Air Resources Board). If this subsidy wasn't provided there would likely BE NO Tesla Semis operating from the Modesto Yard. mind you, all of this was spelled out (so not hidden) in the profile CNBC did on the Semi and Pepsi-Co uploaded Feb 13, 2023.
yeah i cant wait to see them going through the rocky mountains in winter time lol
Wondering if they'll require a NDA just to test drive one.

This video made my day, not just the brilliant humour but the subject matter. I used to be a fan of EJ but since he declared his anti American standing I’ve lost all respect for him, to the point of even hearing his name, acts as an emetic. Keep these brilliant videos coming, they lift me right up.
he's not American, maybe that's why, he's has bigger picture or map, the more world out than the border of the USA?

Saw an article recently in basically the whole EV industry. They simply aren't selling well across the planet, and many of the big car companies are not going to throw the money into developing more EV or improving the ones they have. EVs are just a scam.
The only thing that is fucking Musk's Cyber Truck is that it will never be allowed on the road in it's current form. It's a pedestrian's nightmare.
"Hey let's make a truck that will dominate the world!"
"Can I put razor sharp points all over the front cuz it'll look boss?"
No sane regulator will allow this shitbox on the road.
Poor old EJ.
musk has been saying things are going get bad for quite a while now because of the massive inflation, high interest rates, and poor economy. no surprise to me there was a bad quarter. i personally think what musk has done for the ev industry is simply amazing. like thousands of others have learned, dont bet your $ on elon to fail.
Q4 2020 earnings call Musk said the Exoskeleton Truck development was complete and deliveries would start in 2021 - 2023 Exoskeleton scrapped, now Body on Frame, still no deliveries and still being hand built. Like Semi Truck, Roadster and FSD - Cybertruck is nothing more than a stock pump.
Hello John and greetings from Canada. I am a long time subscriber and generally agree with most of the positions you take on most things automotive, but I diverge on the subject of Tesla. I do agree that Elon Musk is not your typical CEO and some of his behaviours are far different from the norm. Tesla the company is doing exceptionally well when viewed as an automotive start-up. Right now, Tesla is able to make a higher profit margin than any other high volume automotive manufacturer. They seem to have revolutionized automotive manufacturing techniques and now are world class in the field. They are on track for the Tesla Model Y being the highest volume new vehicle sold this year bar none. And while all this has been going on they have achieved the highest market cap of any automotive company and accumulated the largest cash on hand war chest to boot. So, I don’t think this video will age well. Clearly Tesla has been promising a lot and they do have a track record of delivering late on much of it. However, when you are on the bleeding edge of technology, setbacks are sometimes encountered before achieving the specified goals. Right now, I’d be inclined to describe the Tesla Semi as being rolled out in pilot mode with Pepsi/Frito Lays. I am expecting the Semi will go through a major upgrade before volume rollout is attempted. The CyberTruck launch event will have a production ready version available for delivery, but Tesla will not ramp that too fast until the initial wave of deliveries is field tested and weaknesses addressed. This is a very different product from prior Tesla products so it may take some time. In the meantime, some of specifications of the CyberTruck have started leaking, so far, no surprises. It will be interesting to see where the price falls on the entry level model - Base truck with RWD and only a 300 Mile range.
You hit it.
Would be interesting to see Tesla fall. Wonder how many financial derivatives are backed by Tesla stocks. The shit show will be terrifying yet amazing. And given that the Teslas are always online appliances it'll be interesting to see how long they'll be able to function without constant updates.
Would also be interesting if Ford and GM go under, although the taxpayer will keep them afloat
@@Peye-pv4cb If Ford and GM go under the entire US economy will go under with them, at least the part that still makes shit. They'll take metallurgy and chemical factories with them, it'll be a bloodbath.
@@Peye-pv4cb If the taxpayer is going to keep Ford and GM afloat, it stands to reason that they'd keep Tesla alight.

I’m not sure the Cybertuck is certain to fail, but it has been a very radical modification of standard pickup design and therefore always seemed to me riskier than necessary. People will buy it and we will find out if it proves to be a capable vehicle in few or many applications or just a stainless steel Edsel. Tesla makes very mainstream cars that sell well that do not require people to radically change the way they use their cars, except for that pesky recharge time compared to filling up at the bowser. I think the forces opposed to EVs and those promoting them are about to draw real blood. No doubt the electric vampires will grow tumescent with blood as the two sides savage each other. And as we all know watching savagery from a safe distance is is one life’s most precious pass times. Pass the beef jerky.
Vegan beef jerky?
It doesn't have to be that way..
But according to Tesla Fanboyism doctrine, anyone pointing out the obvious questions gets chewed up like Beef Jerky.
Thats very seldom that you are out doing road trips. Mostly its more convenient, you just plug it in at home, no stops at the gas station.
Over 80% of EV charging is done at home while sleeping... Over 90% of car use is within 200km of home... Therefore, the facts indicate time savings for EV charging (compared with ICE vehicle fueling - 99.9 % of which is NOT at home)
@@DarylOster So 80% of EV re-charging Is via power sources other than solar, in that case. Interesting. That has been kept very quiet, hasn't it.
But I’ve also never understood is how come Tesla has not had to go under the same rules as every other car manufacturer in America there’s a reason manufacturers have dealers it’s because they were forced to have them by the government. Why is Tesla not forced to have them I’ve never understood that they’re not playing by the same rules.
Yeah dealerships are the biggest scam known to man and they donate To politicianS so not surprising They pass laws to make it illegal to sell directly from factory
Because they are state laws not federal laws and very few people like dealers these days.
That's an ignorant post. You should do some homework first, than once you understand the topic, then make a comment. As some one that spent most of his career in industrial sales/ distribution, I with Elon on this issue, an OEM should have the freedom to sell direct to end users or use dealers. Modern day car dealers have become useless, when I walk in to a showroom I know more about the vehicle than they do.
@@whenever-199iq It’s silly to discount the power of car dealers in most state houses because they have grown fat being middlemen between the existing OEMs and the consumer eating margin and even jacking up prices to the consumer.
@@MyUtubeScott - The mechanics, body repair and parts counter are Very Important however, and that is something that Tesla lacks, I have seen large parking lots full of Teslas waiting for repair parts and I wonder how many weeks a customer will remain loyal while waiting for parts to get his EV on the road again.

John, you have me rolling in laughter! Great job!
Every other manufacture builds a truck the same way. Not hard to get equipment that will do that. With the Tesla Truck its a whole different process and they have to create and invent the building process from the ground up. Oh and in the call not once did I hear Elon Tear up if that's even a thing. Since it was not a live video feed. This video is simply helping the Tesla stock Bears!! Oh and it helps Tesla because Using it's or Elons name is free advertising.
Elon knows more about manufacturing than anyone else on earth - he told us so. I spent years on the shop floor grinding sub 10 micron parts. Good luck keeping the price under 140k and filling a million orders. That will take more than a decade.
@@jdmather5755 Grinding sub 10 micron parts is easy. You've just got to know when to switch from the 40 grit to the 2000 grit.
