Paul is a great storyteller. Between this and his demonstrations with Mr. Maple, I think he'd make an excellent instructor for whatever he wanted to teach. He's very calm and clear, and he knows what he's doing without seeming to be overbearing or condescending. And he has the humility to tell all the stories of when things went wrong for him, which is often great for people trying to learn,, and it's very clear he learned from those mistakes.

      @@MatthewandPaulOfficial It isn't kindness. It's the truth. :)
I know Paul is having a good amount of success as an artist while he still has a workable level of sight (and his illustrations are adorable). But when you hit the point where that sort of thing becomes impractical, I would encourage you to consider taking up some kind of teaching, whether one or one, online, or in a lecture format (yes, I know Paul is an introvert, but I actually know a lot of introverts who do public speaking. The trick is that the crowd is all out there, and you're up at a podium or on a dais by yourself).

My family fostered puppies for guide dogs for the blind in the UK, and we had to train them to sleep in one area of the house, and kept in there. We used the utility and made it really cosy for them with lots of toys and bones to chew. The rationale was that not all owners have big houses or want to have their dogs sleeping anywhere. And made sure that all dogs knew the strictest rules and it was up to the handler what rules to be broken at home (so bed situation, getting on furniture etc) and still be safe and have a good working dog. Our second puppy, Kris, however had the life of luxury. We got emails and letters from the new handlers, and Kris’ handler actually phoned. She got talking to my dad, and updating him. She told him ‘oh yes, he comes and wakes me up in the mornings by putting his nose in my hand’ when my dad asked if Kris was still a morning dog wanting his breakfast. My dad asked where he was, thinking had he taught himself to let himself out of the kitchen (Kris was really tall so wouldn’t be surprised) or that his doggy bed was in the bedroom. He had his own single HUMAN BED next to his handler’s bed!!! My dad was like ‘come again?’. That was when the puppy raiser supervisor explained that the dogs had to stick to the rules until they are partnered up, as my dad was like, so they can sleep in the living room!

    Greetings from Barcelona!(Spain)
Oh, by the way, fun fact: Here in Spain, although there are various training centers, many blind people get their guide dogs in the United States, specifically at a training center in Rochester (NY). This means that many blind people in Spain communicate with their dog in English (orders like “leave it”, “sit”…)

Fun fact from a raiser: they're starting to introduce retrieving to new puppies,
with special retrieving bumpers (not balls)! A puppy I raised before it was made more standard was allowed to retrieve and it helped him so much! GDB is constantly ajusting the way they run to make improvements as the learn and grow!

I need to do more research on "t touch"...not sure if I know how to spell it. However, I want to give my dog some...she does SOOOOOOO much for me. She is my emotional support animal...she doesn't need papers. She literally has helped me through my husband's death, rare blood disease diagnosis, my Daddy's death (buried the day before my birthday), and the leukemia diagnosis. She deserves something fantastic for ALL she's done for me. Literally when my hubby passed, she laid on my chest and wouldn't let people near me. She knew the part that was hurting. When I'm in pain from my illnesses, she will not leave me or lays on the side that hurts so no one can get near it. She deserves to be treated like a queen for being there for me so much!

T-touch is named for the creator of the practice, Linda Tellington-Jones. She has several books out and they are very interesting. I was introduced to her in a riding program I belonged to. If I’m remembering correctly, the touch was developed after she worked with an Israeli riding instructor named Moshe Feldenkrais. He introduced some massage in his training which was intended to connect neural pathways in the brain.
How cool that Paul learned about T-touch for Mr. Maple!

    • @darkessraven

Paul doesn’t know about how a school matches dogs to handlers as it’s all within the school. What his experience tells though is that what they pair might not work because the dog won’t behave as expected as you can’t calculate that. Paul’s female one was too fast and just didn’t like Paul ( she won’t listen to him to go poop which is a big sign)

I've always wondered how guide dogs handle extremely hot weather. I know there's little booties for things like escalators and other rough terrain, but what about hot pavement?

Why did you choose that school in particular? Was it because it was close? Did you think of going to any other schools? I ask because I follow Molly Burkes journey, and she went to Myra, so I just like getting your perspective on why you chose the school you chose. If I went blind, I don’t think I’d want to go to a school that prematches dogs because I’d be heartbroken if it didn’t work out like how it had with your first dog. I’d rather get to work with multiple dogs, and choose for myself

I think they have a video on this topic, but one of the main reasons (if i'm not mistaken) is that paul was able to sign up on their page and everything on his own since it was made to be accesible for blond people while most aren't

Specifically, Paul could visually read their page with his remaining eyesight. Possibly the other organizations have web pages that work great with apps that read the text to the user, but are difficult for people with vision impairment to navigate visually.

I think having a guide dog is obviously beneficial and Mr Maple is cool. I don’t think having to have a guide dog is cool. I’m certain Paul appreciates and loves Mr Maple.
It’s like having to use a walker, it’s not a Mazda Miata. MX-5

Hi Paul, what is the training you and your dog go through for response to an emergency? What scenarios do you and your dog get trained on?
And second, how did Mr Maple get his name, was this given to him while he was a training pup before you got him, or your choice?
