THANK YOU!!! As I see others have mentioned - well explained and filmed. I'm fed up with this unit not having an actual OFF and after turning it OFF - still having a dead battery a few days later - since it doesn't actually turn OFF. Getting a small micro switch; and taking care of the battery problem. Wasn't sure how to deal with the ribbon cable. You explained it. Thank you very much again.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 That may/might work. But I constantly choose "power off" etc. It goes off - but is still On. I have ordered a micro switch and know where I am drilling a small hole and installing. It WILL now be Off - when I'm finished. Thank you again.
Extremely helpful. Nice internal device detail and explanation for various steps. You may want to pay special attention to how he reinstalls the microphone. (Its placement around the edge may not be intuitive to you, and it WILL come out of its place when you open the GPS.) I find that this is also substantially applicable to the Drive Smart65, which is my GPS. Also note, make sure your new battery comes with double-sided adhesive before you discard what is there. Mine usually do not, so you may have to preserve that tape/adhesive for reuse with the new battery.
Thank-you for this video. Fantastic tutorial. Replaced the battery on my DriveSmart 51, but accidentally disconnected the video display due to the tape holding it in place drying out. Tried reconnecting several times. Difficult to see small detail. Unable to get screen to display. Couldn’t figure out how to reconnect until I saw your video. Nearly discarded my Garmin unit, but now it works fantastic. Much appreciated.
Thank you. This was most useful. My ribbon cable came loose when I opened the case to replace the battery, and at first I thought I had broken it. Your video showed me how to reconnect the cable, and I am very happy I did not ruin my Garmin unit.
I really enjoyed the video. The electronics was the first lesson but I am glad that you included the explanation of how the box snapped together. Once you understand how the fasteners work, it makes it simpler to get them to open. I have messed up many of attachments from cars to electronics because I didn't understand how they attached to each other. I hope that you include this in all of your videos. After I understood the attachment I used my very hard and best tools (my thumbnails) to open the case. Very good. I have subscribed and am looking forward to your other videos.
thanks garmin was coming on but then would cut off after a few minutes unless you tapped the screen. went through the settings and found the screen duration settings and reset it . enjoy your videos
Thank you Sir! i needed to learn how to get the ribbon cable back in and you nailed it down for me. I appreciate you taking the time to show us how to perform this task.
You taught me one other thing. My 2597 had a hard time hearing my Voice Command. I did not have the microphone in correctly. On the 2597 it goes in the back cover and is held in by a small ring. I put it in correctly, tonight. Thanks. I think she will hear better, now.
Got a new battery in my Nuvi 50 LM, today. Splitting the case halves was tough, but the rest of it was easy. Mine was a 2013 model, according to the dat on the battery. I used the case splitting tool that came with my battery tools. I guess it took me 45-to one hour to replace the battery. I took it for a short ride in the car and told it to “Go Home,” which it did. I have it on an USB charger right now. Just remember, dull knives we cut you worse than a sharp knife. I put on my leather gloves to split the cases. I used my Barlow to help split the cases. I did not take the ribbon cable off. I just flipped the screen over and removed the system board to allow me to access the battery plug. It will only plug in one way because it is indexed.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 yes, she has checked out fine. I have her on the USB charger, now. I charged up the 50 LM 100%. Both are working fine. How I lost the screws. I must have put the old battery on them and they stuck to the double stick tape and then when I picked it up to make sure I had the plug on the new battery oriented, correctly they fell off. Two ended up in the case but I got them out. I have no idea where the fell, probably through one of the crack in my back deck. I can’t see as well as I used to. Cheaper to buy two than look for them. I have the same thing happen on the E clip that holds the sprocket on a chainsaw - they like to go flying. I don’t waste my time. I just buy new ones. II have the same problems with the circlips that hold the wrist pin, too.
I don't comment usually, but I just have to say to you good sir, THANK YOU! I'm a tech dabbler, and I truly enjoyed this. I also like the fact that from what I have witnessed from two of your videos this one and Repair of Garmin GTM Traffic Receiver, you actually respond to comments. So I have a question for you. The old Garmin StreetPilot c550 would show the upcoming mile marker on the interstate, the DriveSmart 7 LMT EX only shows next exit, is there a way to show mile marker instead of exit?
Yes you can as long as the Voltage is 3.7V and it physically fits. However to do that you must use the original Garmin Control board from the old battery. Here is how you do that ruclips.net/video/c2mpLgBpBOM/видео.html
Doesn't look anything like mine, ribbon goes to the screen the other end to the circuit board and the ribbon can be removed from both ends one ribbon both ends can be detached nothing else attached to it to desolder , replaced the screen and the same problem if you hold a flashlight to it you can see what's on the screen otherwise the screen is black.

Thanks for your help, Randy Ithaca NY.
Greetings, If the main board has gone bad, I don't think a Drive Assist 51LMT is worth fixing, because you can get a used one for under $100 on eBay. However if it is not the main board and it is just a bad connection on the USB Port then it is indeed worth fixing. You can repair the USB port yourself by following my GPS USB Port repair videos.
