  • Learn how to find the lower quartile Q1, the upper quartile Q2 and the interquartile range, IQR, from a list of discrete data, or a list of numbers.
We start by writing the numbers in increasing order then finding the median.
This splits the data into a lower portion and an upper portion.
The lower quartile is the median of the lower portion and the upper quartile is the median of the upper portion.
We can then calculate the interquartile range, IQR, using the fact that IQR = Q3-Q1.
We work through 2 examples, in the first there's an even number of values in the list of data. In the second there's an odd number of values in the list of data.
