I consider Chemtrials and NFR the same as Folklore and Evermore by Taylor Swift. Idk why was it a problem that Chemtrials has some of the production of NFR, being the same producer... I think no one complained when Taylor released a sister album to Folklore sounding literally the same, and I don't know why they do complain about Chemtrials. NFR is my favorite by Lana and Chemtrials my second favorite. Those two are so beautiful, in their one way.
Oh Chemtrails definitely is her Evermore to NFR’s Folklore (I argue Folklore owes a lot to NFR despite being produced by Dessner who’s yet to work with Lana)
I agree with you that NFR is my fav and chem trails second bc the production for both is so cool. I also agree it’s dumb to think something is automatically bad because it is similar production wise to a prior work. This being said, I think the biggest issue with comparing folklore and evermore to these albums is that they were presented as two separate entities. I’m not a swifty, but ik a decent amount about taylor through friends and family. This being said, Folklore and Evermore were clearly intended to be “sister albums” by their name, aesthetic presentation, and close release dates. This is not true with NFR and chemtrails. While they are very similar production wise, they had a year and a half between releases and she took a departure from her explicit Americana LA aesthetic to be more of a road-trip album imo. This along with all the controversy discussed in the video, AND the immense success of NFR, it was easy to paint this album as a lack-luster attempt to recapture the magic of NFR without committing to the idea. While I understand that these shouldn’t be compared directly and appreciate both as I said prior, that’s why I think it was so poorly received at the time.
To me the only really questionable thing she did was citing her “rapper boyfriends” 💀 it was a hard year to be a Lana stan 😭 but that’s okay because this era gave us White Dress, one of her greatest tracks imo

Looking back at NFR & COTCC after DYKTTUOB, I would like to say that: 1) *Question for the Culture* prior to COTCC release is to act like a *Foreword or Abstract* for the Trilogy (of NFR, BB, DYKTTUOB, like a book. 2) NFR is the *Chapters* (Content) of the Trilogy 3) meanwhile BB including her book VBBOTG are the *Footnotes* for the chapters. 4) and DYKTTUOB is the *Acknowledgment* for the Trilogy.
Great analysis as usual. This album was a slow burn for me and I've noticed that with her new trilogy. But I appreciate it more everytime I listen to it. ❤
Wow I just discovered your channel and appreciate your thoughtful analysis of Lana’s body of work! Thanks for that! I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about COTCC, especially the title track, and I like that you highlighted the word “normalcy” which seems key to this song and the album as a whole. For me, the COTCC video added much needed visuals, in particular the vaporous “white picket”chemtrails that settle down on the people occupying the country club. Playing on the conspiracy theory that chemtrails are part of a government effort to control humans, Lana seems to equate the insidious Chemtrails with the American dream itself, which settles down over those mindlessly occupying and enjoying the country club. Yet we see that Lana-despite her exposure to the chemtrails-remains “strange and wild” to the point where she and her friends literally transform into wild wolves in the middle of the night. Lana is anything but “normal” and it seems like that mesh mask (symbolically) represents her ability to resist vaporous chemtrails and therefore the numbing banality of suburban life trapped within white picket fences?
That reading tracks! There was a lot of cryptic imagery and like general mystery to the record most people ignored for controversy which is sad, I felt like she dropped the era a little too soon and moved on v fast!
I didn't connect with this album at all when it was released, but then it grew on me. I don't think it's one of Lana's strongest works, but it does contain some career highlights (White Dress, the title track, Tulsa Jesus Freak and Yosemite). It's also a very cohesive album and a good picture of Lana's life at that time, and that makes it far superior to Blue Banisters imo, which although it has some good songs, I find it a very uneven album that seems piecemeal and not at all cohesive. Thanks for the video, I love your channel!! Looking forward to watch your Ocean Blvd review ❤
Thanks for watching! And I do see all your points for sure. This record rekindled my appreciation and connection felt towards her. Coming out during the pandemic, I found myself giving new perspective and meditation to every aspect of my life, and this project made me feel connected to her own personal journey in the sense of moving on, each with his own path to walk. I think it was the perfect album to release in that historically challenging period and definitely made it in my for-life albums' list ❤
I didn't listen to COCCK until like over a year after it was released cause all of the controversy coupled with the lackluster single at the time just soured me from giving the album the time of day. But it was also because NFR was just too frigging good and I was still pretty much listening to NFR daily at that time. Once everything died down my sister told me to give it a listen as there are good gems in there. While I didn't love everything on the first listen or even now. Thank u sm! I’m glad u have been enjoying them! I love your picks! And honestly, I can’t wait to share my thoughts on Ocean Blvd, there’s so much to unpack… it’s such a rich album. Already cracked my top 3 ngl… 😭
Back in the day an artist or band had to have only one or two hits on an album…Lana has so many per album (hits to her fans ) I loved the first 3 songs on this album so much…& like the other songs a whole lot too, but those are my fav from this album. I love her for introducing Joni’s music to a whole new generation of people also.
7:57 its actually about her disgusting ex bf that lives in tulsa and he got married to another woman while they were still dating. it also links to a&w from the line "did you know a singer can still be lookin like a side piece at 33"
i ain’t gonna lie, this is my least fav project off of her catalogue but i do have a top 5. Anyways! i just want to see your review of Ocean Blvd, this is serious, been crying non stop whenever i play my fav songs off of that record, too much potential to be in the top 3 albums of Lana’s discography! 💕🔥
Oh I keep changing what I want to say about Ocean Blvd like I'm writing my review and I have to say this is another career defining record much like NFR and it's truly her modern Honeymoon in a way (not sonically but in terms of challenging listeners)
Chemtrials creates its own world. But in my opinion, her best vocal album is whether Honeymoon or Blue Banisters, those two are her best vocal eras. I'm also including her most recent Ocean Blvd, a complete collection of gorgeous and heavenly tracks.
Oomf can you go over some of the single’s and other songs from deluxe editions etc you didnt mention. Maybe a video of scrapped and unreleased as well? That would be cool!!
Chemtrails over the country club is literally my 2nd fav lana album, like from nfr to cotcc was a great run, i hated blue banisters tbh, chemtrails is such a short and well structured album in my opinion, for me its always nfr, cotcc, and honeymoon
Blue Banisters always felt like a scattershot scrapbook of old demos reworked to tell a complicated story for die-hards. I do like Chemtrails for its relative simplicity, it was always meant to be NFR’s midwestern sister.
@@EljohnMacaranas couldn't agree more, although blue banisters has grown on me by a lot, it still remains as my least fav Lana album, I think chemtrails always captivated me for the exact reason, that it is simple, it always felt like an album it too hard to understand and get into, it always felt like the album I could listen late at night tin the forest, and imagine my own life in it, tbh it quite gives me vibes of being a summer album but being outside with ur friends near the night at the beach with ur guitar, jamming and dancing around the fire, in the night.
Dark, but just a game and Wild at Heart. Those two songs saved this album. Love the first half and hardly listen to the second half. Fortunately, Blue banisters delivered!
Oh that was October 2018 so around the time she launched Mariners and NFR's era and OMG "i will won't not f*** you the f*** up up" has to be one of the most iconic tweets ever
Its really upsetting that this album was overhated only because of the drama that surrounded it at the time, this album is definetly my fave other than NFR(im out of my honeymoon phase😭)
@@EljohnMacaranas still doesn't change the fact that people who got offended are dumb. Some of us didn't have the privilege to be offended over an album cover in a global PANDEMIC with people dying and losing their jobs.
I absolutely love this album but fuck it’s true blue banisters is just so much better and overshadowed it. I think it being short is perfect if it had any more songs it would of felt like a drag but it’s peaceful thanks to the fact that it only has a few songs
People will never be happy with Lana because they don't wanna be. She has the audacity to call forth uncomfortable ideas and discussions (abusive relationships, insecurity, depression, not being an assertive enough woman, etc). Things many of her critics can relate to and don't want to admit it to themselves. They want to relate to Beyonce's confidence and Taylor's safe feminism (no shade on them), not Lana, who isn't trying to be a role model or self insert for anyone.
I don’t know why but I can’t connect with Chemtrails at all besides the opener, White Dress. As the two albums that came out in 2021, BB resonates with me more.
being a lana fan during chemtrails/violet era was like going to war…no one was safe. we were all on the frontlines. chemtrails furthered the republican allegations. defense felt weak.
To be fair, BB Lana revealed recently in an Interview that it was never meant to be released she just put it out there into the world to get her thoughts out (hence it never getting promoted well and sorta was just dumped)
I kinda enjoy COTCC but it definitely not a favorite and its weak in some areas; but I agree with Blue Banister it was so uncohesive and none of the songs stuck with me, also with the album having so many outtakes it just didn’t feel put together
I actually liked blue banisters when it dropped. The tracks from Violet for Roses till Wildflower Wildfire are my fav. The beginning and end of BB are a lil forgettable

White Dress, Tulsa, LMLYLAW, Chemtrais title track and DTWD are career highlights
once enough time has gone by to digest and form an opinion I can't wait to hear your take on ocean boulevard
Thank u sm! I’m glad u have been enjoying them! I love your picks! And honestly, I can’t wait to share my thoughts on Ocean Blvd, there’s so much to unpack… it’s such a rich album. Already cracked my top 3 ngl… 😭
Lizzy has nothing to apologize for. That woman has more wholesomeness in her pinky than any of her detractors trying to tear her down.
Karma and time genuinely proved her righr
loveeee this series and ur putting out the vids so quickly thank you ❤❤
Thank u sm! For watching and commenting and everything!
Could you please react to some of her unreleased songs? Every album era, I always hope she’ll officially drop Say Yes To Heaven 😭
I pray everyday that we get to click add to library on Say Yes to Heaven. I will def do an unreleased video but after a short break
@@EljohnMacaranas Yay looking forward to it, enjoy your well-deserved break!
this is my fav lana era idc what anyone has to say
Up until LFL dropped, you're experiencing the Ultaviolence stan lifestyle.
Back in the day an artist or band had to have only one or two hits on an album…Lana has so many per album (hits to her fans )
I loved the first 3 songs on this album so much…& like the other songs a whole lot too, but those are my fav from this album.
I love her for introducing Joni’s music to a whole new generation of people also.
7:57 its actually about her disgusting ex bf that lives in tulsa and he got married to another woman while they were still dating. it also links to a&w from the line "did you know a singer can still be lookin like a side piece at 33"
Is it the cop?
i ain’t gonna lie, this is my least fav project off of her catalogue but i do have a top 5.
Anyways! i just want to see your review of Ocean Blvd, this is serious, been crying non stop whenever i play my fav songs off of that record, too much potential to be in the top 3 albums of Lana’s discography! 💕🔥
Oh I keep changing what I want to say about Ocean Blvd like I'm writing my review and I have to say this is another career defining record much like NFR and it's truly her modern Honeymoon in a way (not sonically but in terms of challenging listeners)
It is on par with NFR for me... Immaculate production and Lana delivers imo her best vocals ever
I have to agree on the vocals, she really pushes her limits here even if she dropped Dealer the same year
Chemtrials creates its own world. But in my opinion, her best vocal album is whether Honeymoon or Blue Banisters, those two are her best vocal eras.
I'm also including her most recent Ocean Blvd, a complete collection of gorgeous and heavenly tracks.
@@Julian.Romero13 I totally agree, maybe what I meant to say is that her voice is more versatile in cotcc (see dance till we die, white dress).
Chemtrails was one of her top albums
*is
Variety agrees!
Oomf can you go over some of the single’s and other songs from deluxe editions etc you didnt mention. Maybe a video of scrapped and unreleased as well? That would be cool!!
that's a plan i have for after i do the series and maybe after a brief break from talking about Lana
I think it felt like an EP sister to NFR, like I love the callbacks but it never felt standalone
Was this the era where she ended Azalea banks? 😭😭 or am I confused
Oh that was October 2018 so around the time she launched Mariners and NFR's era and OMG "i will won't not f*** you the f*** up up" has to be one of the most iconic tweets ever
Yosemite is my fav lana song, so chilling
Wild at heart, dark but just a game and natwwal are nfr! outtakes so maybe that’s why the album got so much criticism
Honestly those tracks are my favorite. Sure they do sound too much like NFR but I think we needed them!
Love the Lana videos ❤
Thank u ♥️
Its really upsetting that this album was overhated only because of the drama that surrounded it at the time, this album is definetly my fave other than NFR(im out of my honeymoon phase😭)
Oh for sure. This album was overshadowed by her getting "cancelled" because no one had anything else better to do bc of the pandemic.
Happy dykttatuob day! Let's make this official lol
HAPPY DYKTTATUOB DAY 🤭
@@EljohnMacaranas fave song of Blvd?
@@EljohnMacaranas a+w or sweet I forgot the name
people who got offended from the album cover and "the question for the culture" are chronically online 🤷
Remember this was during the pandemic so everyone WAS chronically online at the time amplifying the actual backlash
@@EljohnMacaranas still doesn't change the fact that people who got offended are dumb. Some of us didn't have the privilege to be offended over an album cover in a global PANDEMIC with people dying and losing their jobs.
My favorite album from her 😻
first era that i experienced from lana lol
You came in the same way many BTD Paradise stans did: expert difficulty!
My first era was NFR fortunately 😭
I absolutely love this album but fuck it’s true blue banisters is just so much better and overshadowed it. I think it being short is perfect if it had any more songs it would of felt like a drag but it’s peaceful thanks to the fact that it only has a few songs
Chemtrails is my favorite title track
am i the only one who loves this album a lot more than NFR
Tbh probably not, Variety named it the best record she’s dropped!
when are you gonna review endless summer vacation? i feel like it's a good concept album
I’m waiting on Part 2 which was rumored then announced(?) apparently it’s a rock album! I’ll do both within the same week
Please do AKA and sirens by May jailer! ❤
she sells chemtrails
to the students at bedales
People will never be happy with Lana because they don't wanna be. She has the audacity to call forth uncomfortable ideas and discussions (abusive relationships, insecurity, depression, not being an assertive enough woman, etc). Things many of her critics can relate to and don't want to admit it to themselves. They want to relate to Beyonce's confidence and Taylor's safe feminism (no shade on them), not Lana, who isn't trying to be a role model or self insert for anyone.
cotcc was ok...my life would be perfectly fine if she had cherrypicked a few of those songs and crammed them on blue banisters
That’s fair, I think she dropped too much in 2021 like too much was going on for people to digest things!
I don’t know why but I can’t connect with Chemtrails at all besides the opener, White Dress. As the two albums that came out in 2021, BB resonates with me more.
BB was her more personal album of the two, she revealed in a Rolling Stone article she didn’t intend to release it so she didn’t promo it much!
being a lana fan during chemtrails/violet era was like going to war…no one was safe. we were all on the frontlines. chemtrails furthered the republican allegations. defense felt weak.
This and blue banisters were flops in my book
To be fair, BB Lana revealed recently in an Interview that it was never meant to be released she just put it out there into the world to get her thoughts out (hence it never getting promoted well and sorta was just dumped)
I kinda enjoy COTCC but it definitely not a favorite and its weak in some areas; but I agree with Blue Banister it was so uncohesive and none of the songs stuck with me, also with the album having so many outtakes it just didn’t feel put together
Chemtrails is very good and her second best album. Blue Bastards is so mid.
I actually liked blue banisters when it dropped. The tracks from Violet for Roses till Wildflower Wildfire are my fav. The beginning and end of BB are a lil forgettable
