    Artists like David Bowie are praised for reinventing themselves and having stage personas but Lana is called 'inauthentic' for doing the same thing. If she can deliver a feeling and aesthetic as Lana that she couldn't as Lizzie, then I think that's true artistry and that it makes the music more genuine.

    • @Revealingstorm.
      @Revealingstorm. 5 лет назад +69

      Well those were characters. He didn't change his name from David Bowie to Bavid Dowie and try to make people forget his other music existed. It's a bit disingenuous to compare the two.

    • @jessicacroteau5600
      @jessicacroteau5600 5 лет назад +336

      Bowie was really David Robert Jones and he used to perform as Davy Jones in the 1960's but changed his stage name to David Bowie because he wanted to. And I know that he considered his personas characters. What I meant in my comparison was that as performers they can choose to express different parts of themselves and tell a story. I don't think it makes them any less authentic because the music and the performance still comes from them. David Bowie created personas to reflect different stages in his life and the changes in the world around him. For example, he started performing as the Thin White Duke after dealing with cocaine abuse and living in West Berlin. I don't know whether or not Lana was trying to be deceptive by taking down her old music or just trying to get a fresh start, or whether or not she's being manipulated by her management, but I won't criticize her for how she chooses to perform or express herself.

    Lana's persona is definitely manufactured, but she manufactured this persona herself (with help, ofc). Her music and imagery are intended to be highly romanticized surreal exaggerative fantasies, fantasy art worlds which carry on to her essence and persona. Is Lana's art intended as a product? Maybe, but it is still art. Isn't the point of art to take our minds to alternate planes and provoke emotion/responses?
    I think celebrity culture and our nosiness towards personal lives have made us forget the difference between the celebrity and the artist. It is ok for an artist to lie, to feed us illusion for the sake of art - and it is also ok for their public existence to be an extension of their work. I personally find that sort of devotion intriguing and respectable, and doubt Lana would have maintained this long if she was not invested in being an artist.

      Yes! Lana del Rey is NOT Elizabeth Grant! Lana is so obviously a character, an extention of her music. But somehow people want to believe, that it's her real persona, and get angry, when they realise the truth. It's like getting angry at actor, that his not the same in the real live, as his character. Maybe that's because Lana's never out of character

    If Lana were a man she’d be considered the father of some shit or a legend already. She’s taken the time in her life to develop a musical/cinematic universe of her own, while also exploring a new genre in each album without it feeling too drastic. Also, her methods of creating music are very similar to how people wrote their own music back in the day like Elton John or any other of the greats. I do think that Lana should be labeled the Queen of Alternative music as she fully embraces all genres. Most alternative artists shy way to far away from pop when alternative as a genre is meant to embrace all music, no matter what it is. She was able to throw jazz over a trap beat while singing about the people who were drugged in their red koolaid-while also singing about wanting her man to come to california and be a freak like her too. She also uses many vocal methods that are rare in modern music like talk singing and vocal bending which is used in tons of classic songs. She uses many vintage chord progressions... The list honestly goes on and on.

Most people are professional, a few terrible to work with, but I've never seen anyone but Lana sit and talk with the set medic about his kids. She had in-depth conversations with most crew members, asking what their next jobs would be.
    She also wanted to be present for all creative decisions. She stayed for lighting set ups and decided not to have a second team (body double) for shots. She politely told the director that she had hired him to interpret her vision so she would be a part of all of the conversations. And she was.

Beyoncé's lemonade is an example. It antagonized nearly the whole country, including the current government, all the while her mass appeal was waning. @@hushedtones7168 I think they are taking about more smaller bands who really don't make a lot of money at all. • @hushedtones7168
      @hushedtones7168 5 лет назад

      @@katteycat genres are only a marketing package built around songwriting. If the songwriting so great you will blow up no matter the genre. If the songwriting is poor then you rely on trends and short lived tactics to finesse but it last only a few months.
      Without great songwriting you can sell out as much as you want in punk rock today and still make no money. All the money goes to 1990s bands who honed their songwriting craft. So better make the music you enjoy anyway.
      In every genre there's a novelty opportunity window to get in more easily. After that the genre is very tired and formulaic so you need to stand out and do new things to innovate and be recognized because instead of listening to a popular bands poor copy people will just listen to the old established original band.
      People who do punk rock today do it as night & weekend passion projects and they have day jobs to cover the bands expenses because most have average songwriting abilities.
      learning songwriting theory is the path to success in any genre now. If you write lyrics that resonate with people and they have good melodies where every note of every syllables fit with the emotion roller coaster of your lyrics then genre doesn't matter. If everything is rhythmically coherent then all you need is to learn to self-produce good enough demos. That's what all succesful acts have in common at least one person in any project focused & spent 3-5years learning and practicing the best knowledge about songwriting & music theory. Even if its easy to them now they worked hard on their songwriting abilities before it became second nature. From SIA to Bebe Rexha to Tove lo to Julia Michaels to avril lavigne to Kacey Musgraves to Katy Perry to Taylor Swift they all shine from their songwriting skills. Even pop stars who aren't that good songwriters will need to get with the best songwriters but then the songwriter will make most money from the song and the performer will make money from the brand they create around themselves with touring, merch, sponsorship. A lot of people can sing great but very few can objectively write great songs. If you spend a few thousand hours practicing and read 4-5 of the best 15$ books about songwriting and analyze 200 top100 songs melodies, chords and rhythm you'll get there within 2-5 years if you have interesting things about you to share or life experience that people can connect with in your lyrics.
      If you want to make it as a instrument performer (drum, bass, guitar, singer) then you will need to practice 10 000 hours and still depend on other people's songwriting.
      But there are still plenty of middle class people in the music industry they will juggle around 5 to 20 different income streams that earn them 0-5000$ per year each.
      Even top DJs all they do is profit from good to great songwriting that they self produce or did interesting sound design over it.

    Woah, the timing of this video is amazing! I have been OBSESSED with Lana’s music lately. I saw her last year in Dallas and she seems very authentic and like a genuinely good person. Loved this video and learning more about one of my favorite artists, thanks for doing what you do man! 😌🙌🏽

    I feel like her singing in a lower register really messed up people's perception of her. Like when she was on stage in her early performances as Lana she wouldn't sing all to well but when she'd hit those high notes they were heavenly. All I know is is that her voice is amazing and I wish people would research and not just base someone's talent off of one bad show( SNL). Thank you for making this video.

      I think Yayo is a great song to show her range. She sings the hook in a medium tone, next in a higher tone, and finally in a deep sultry voice. I love it.

    Lana's music, videos, and image are timeless. Her persona is a reflection of classic cinematic and literary icons. Our society has become so obsessed with exposing everything about a performer that we fail to appreciate the beauty and mystery of their work itself.

    Why is the industry obsessed deceiving people labeling artists as "indie"? Lana Del Rey, Poppy, Clairo, Billie Eilish...

    • @Iisheell
      @Iisheell 5 лет назад +98

      To get young audience to follow an artist? Young people are known to like indie stuff, because young people hate everything that has something to do with corporations, and would likely follow someone who is - at least seemingly - one of them, fresh out of parents' house basement, nobody with a fresh and relatable vision

      indie gives a great "started from the bottom now we here" vibe and also exploiting on the image of "untamed" "experimental" "not sold-out pop star" of indie bands which young fans like to look hipster

      She isn't what was or currently is mainstream - She isn't House, and she isn't RnB/Grime (although some of her collabs have been with such artists) and she isn't like noughties pop either. So kinda where else does she fit, and it's probably easier for her to be labelled as Indie than a very specific sub genre. Baroque pop or something?
