Do a new video on Lana plss 😭😍 she grew miles as a songwriter since that video and her albums Honeymoon, NFR and Ocean Boulevard are lyrical masterpieces and deserve a proper analysis by your channel, love your videos!
I think it's the fact that she tried to pass it off as real and authentic. People have this funny habit of getting pissed off and disliking people who give the notion of being authentic and sincere when they are not.
@@caleidoo Maybe we should look less into that and more into the fact that that's what it takes to be seen and heard. Why does someone need to be fake to be heard? Why are they ignored when they are real? When those who are real stop getting ignored, I'll come back to your statement with some consideration of it's validity.
@@caleidoo who's a porn star? Who looks like a porn star? Not Lana or Marilyn, are you ok? You're on the wrong video, this isn't about Cardi B or Nicki Minaj, stop the Bs.
@@maddie4347 Here's the thing though, how do you know if it's fake? In Elizabeth's case at least, her Lana persona stems from a core part of her. Thus making it rather authentic/real to her. Such is the case with many performers and celebs. What they show you isn't necessarily fake, at least not entirely. Oftentimes, it's a particular aspect of themselves that is just singled out and gets made the focus of their professional identity. Other times, it's their entire selves, just exaggerated.
I mean, people praised Gaga for her persona and her odd and otherworldly fashion. I’ll never understand why Lana got such a hard time. You do what you have to do to make it, you find what works and you go with that.
The Makadray Gaga at the start of her career was scrutinised as an attention seeking, crazed madonna copout who secretly had a penis. It took time for both women
@@PoppyIsMyMetalQueen why do you feel the need to reply under every comment about how much you hate her, all your accusations of racism and inability to sing are simply untrue and there's evidence to disagree with you. wheres your evidence? what makes her racist? is it the fact that she constantly works with and supports black artists on songs? or is it the fact that shes donating the profits of her upcoming poetry book to Native American reparation organizations? You spread so much hate from the sadness inside of you, yet your claims are unsupported and untrue. Do not tell people 'Let me help you understand' when your only comments are solely opinionated. The hatred in your heart is a personal problem which YOU need to sort out.
She's self entitled. She thinks she's better than everyone else which isn't even true. She holds other singers inferior to her even though she can't sing without autotune. Plus her fanbase is toxic af. When Billie won all those grammys, all the lana fans were at her throat. Y'all need to calm down. Not you specifically but like your while fandom.
omg yes especially after her infamous SNL performance people called her a fraud and a drug addict and a media puppet. Like snl had to make a follow-up skit because people were calling her THE WORST SNL musical guest ever :( yah girl had it hard

Artists like David Bowie are praised for reinventing themselves and having stage personas but Lana is called 'inauthentic' for doing the same thing. If she can deliver a feeling and aesthetic as Lana that she couldn't as Lizzie, then I think that's true artistry and that it makes the music more genuine.
Well those were characters. He didn't change his name from David Bowie to Bavid Dowie and try to make people forget his other music existed. It's a bit disingenuous to compare the two.
Bowie was really David Robert Jones and he used to perform as Davy Jones in the 1960's but changed his stage name to David Bowie because he wanted to. And I know that he considered his personas characters. What I meant in my comparison was that as performers they can choose to express different parts of themselves and tell a story. I don't think it makes them any less authentic because the music and the performance still comes from them. David Bowie created personas to reflect different stages in his life and the changes in the world around him. For example, he started performing as the Thin White Duke after dealing with cocaine abuse and living in West Berlin. I don't know whether or not Lana was trying to be deceptive by taking down her old music or just trying to get a fresh start, or whether or not she's being manipulated by her management, but I won't criticize her for how she chooses to perform or express herself.
To be fair a lot of people thought that Bowie was inauthentic back in the 70's. It was only in the 90's that he started to be seen as a musical legend.
Beantown omfg no wrong. ruclips.net/video/rPIJk0MKSWM/видео.html Fake vocals I think not sis, she sounds way better live to me..even if she’s doing a cover for a song like this one. It takes good lungs to hold a note like that.
@@pepita3467 Girl shut up, the SNL thing was over 7 years ago. Now she performs better, is comfartable and got used to it. Stay pressed. NFR AOTY. Period.
Born To Die literally changed my life when I first heard it in high school. It will forever be my favourite album because of the nostalgic feeling I get when I hear those songs. I never knew about her controversial past and never cared about the drama I did hear. This is a woman who writes and produces her own music, has stayed out of mainstream scandal culture, speaks openly about her political beliefs, and frankly gets better every year. I wish more people could see her as the incredible artist and vocalist that she is, rather than being labeled an indie singer for teenagers. Also this girlie can PERFORM! I saw her in 2018 and it was better than anything I had expected!
Lana had horrible stage fright and anxiety before the SNL performance, plus she was singing low. I saw her last April, and it was absolutely amazing. She has improved so much.
All she did was grow, and change her name. I don't understand the hate. She admits her past, and she is happy to move forward but still be the same person. I don't understand why people get mad
Ya. She grew.... Grew into an absolute racist bitch. She thinks she's so better than everyone else yet she can't even sing. She's just a horrible person. I used to like her but then I realized what a horrible role model she was.
Tyler Hershey you’re just looking for drama and you don’t even put efforts to search about Lana herself. and you’re really calling a person racist that chose a black rapper as president in her music video? better learn about her than say baseless stuff like this
Neither were John Wayne or Kanye West. Women are just subjected to a greater degree of scrutiny and more vulnerable to accusations of “inauthenticity.” I don’t think Del Rey is less authentic than, say, Taylor Swift.
i never jumped into the band wagon of hating her and im soo proud to myself that i stand up and get bullied for liking her cuz shes truly.. an ICON ♥️♥️♥️💎
She didn't deserve shit. She can write songs but that's all she's got. She can't sing. Plus she is the most horrible person. She is so self entitled she honestly thinks She's better than every other singer. Plus she's racist. And no one likes a racist.

Jessica Buttgereit sis you can read multiple interviews in which Lorde said Lana was one of the most influential artists in shaping Pure Heroine and Royals. Lorde cited Lana and Kanye as her biggest influences for that project. Not to bash lorde I absolutely love her, and she certainly helped popularize it, but Lana largely started this style of singing and brought this sort of somber pop into the mainstream
no she didn't thats an opinion and shes not that good. i haven't even hear of her music until a few moths ago and shes trash she cant perform and has no talent
Jessica Buttgereit That’s a bit shortsighted. They are contemporaries, whether you like Del Ray or not. You are a perfect example, of how divisive both of their music is. You’ll hear some Del Ray fans, state the same things about Lorde, as your comment did about Del Ray. You really believe Lorde is the more authentic? That’s your opinion, and it really doesn’t matter what Lorde or Del Ray thinks about it either, as both have very rabid fans, who will argue for who they believe is more influential.
I work in the film industry and have shot countless music videos. Lana is one of the kindest people I have worked with. Most people are professional, a few terrible to work with, but I've never seen anyone but Lana sit and talk with the set medic about his kids. She had in-depth conversations with most crew members, asking what their next jobs would be. She also wanted to be present for all creative decisions. She stayed for lighting set ups and decided not to have a second team (body double) for shots. She politely told the director that she had hired him to interpret her vision so she would be a part of all of the conversations. And she was.
this comment definitely warmed my heart. thank you so much for providing us with a glimpse into a window of how lana conducts herself when shes working. amazing :')
@@HarvestGremlin I actually ran into her on set again a few months ago. She was hanging out during her friend’s music video and was helping with some art department DIY. I chatted with her a bit and she is still incredibly sweet and humble. 👍
She rips her style and aesthetic from old movies, and she's gotten plastic surgery to help her pull off her look. Kudos to her for finding a style and image she's comfortable with, but lets not go over board and say she's unique or original. One can find more relevant and sincere things to praise about her, we don't need to make shit up.
Even if she is a manufactured pop star or not, I feel she adds something interesting to the mainstream that is particularly resonant in today’s homogenised pop climate. I’m also a sucker for 1950s and 60s Americana so Lana is right up my alley.
well said matt too many technical gullible peabrains getting critical on these comments or raving about video production ZZZzzzz the woman can sing shes lovely and man those songs , tunes are fucking outstanding . I cant even hear beyonce because her big arse is in the way. That other shite is what they have in mind for you to break society down. Cultural Marxism is for GULLIBLE WEAK LOSERS who cant think for themselves and have no taste of their own
She's demonstrated her autenticity by allowing herself the exercise of trial and error with her music carreer. I'm so thankful she did that. Creatively, changes are always praised. I believe in that.
Lana's persona is definitely manufactured, but she manufactured this persona herself (with help, ofc). Her music and imagery are intended to be highly romanticized surreal exaggerative fantasies, fantasy art worlds which carry on to her essence and persona. Is Lana's art intended as a product? Maybe, but it is still art. Isn't the point of art to take our minds to alternate planes and provoke emotion/responses? I think celebrity culture and our nosiness towards personal lives have made us forget the difference between the celebrity and the artist. It is ok for an artist to lie, to feed us illusion for the sake of art - and it is also ok for their public existence to be an extension of their work. I personally find that sort of devotion intriguing and respectable, and doubt Lana would have maintained this long if she was not invested in being an artist.
Yes! Lana del Rey is NOT Elizabeth Grant! Lana is so obviously a character, an extention of her music. But somehow people want to believe, that it's her real persona, and get angry, when they realise the truth. It's like getting angry at actor, that his not the same in the real live, as his character. Maybe that's because Lana's never out of character
As a Lana fan since the Born to Die album I have always been curious about the questions of authenticity. You maneuvered answering those questions with grace and journalistic integrity. Thank you!
maybe but its pointless, shes a great singer with great tunes that's all that matters . rather authenticate the other garbage we have on our lefty peabrain radio stations . she can pout her lips like an old time movie star all she wants, I will still jerk off! if the tune is great and her tunes are great that's all that matters . have you seen and heard the unauthentic shit out there and nobody breaks that down just shows the level of mentality out there today. shes great shes timeless her tunes are great shes authentic .
Honestly, I was considering the authenticity thing only because I recognized the 'push' she was getting. Whenever a record company gives an artist a push it usually involves moving a few hundred thousand dollars to get media to fall in sync. She has a very distinctive visual aesthetic and her music really beautifully paints a world. Would you blame me for being a little doubtful whether it was all her own creation? I'm interested in looking behind the curtain because I'm a musician / producer. Either way, it all comes from a place of respect though, I'm a fan either way. @@briantrend1812
Edie Doesn’t mean we can’t now! She is genius, has talent, and even has gone through stage fright in front of the world. There’s a personal progression we get to watch with every album release and I feel that’s the reality.
Edie isn’t she called a genius? Like, I always hear her being called a genius. And men can’t make albums sounding like a 60’s female Pop artist so I don’t really know what you mean there :/ if a man did it, it’d just be weird
A V maybe from her own fans but the gp either doesn’t know her or associate her with tumblr girls with daddy issues. And dudes can make 60’s pop, there was that whole phase a few years ago where people were making 50’s inspired shit.
If Lana were a man she’d be considered the father of some shit or a legend already. She’s taken the time in her life to develop a musical/cinematic universe of her own, while also exploring a new genre in each album without it feeling too drastic. Also, her methods of creating music are very similar to how people wrote their own music back in the day like Elton John or any other of the greats. I do think that Lana should be labeled the Queen of Alternative music as she fully embraces all genres. Most alternative artists shy way to far away from pop when alternative as a genre is meant to embrace all music, no matter what it is. She was able to throw jazz over a trap beat while singing about the people who were drugged in their red koolaid-while also singing about wanting her man to come to california and be a freak like her too. She also uses many vocal methods that are rare in modern music like talk singing and vocal bending which is used in tons of classic songs. She uses many vintage chord progressions... The list honestly goes on and on.
You know this "if she was a man" are fucking hilarious. The entertainment industry is one of those very few places were women have an advantage over men.
I’ll never forget when she performed in Lollapalooza Chile and gave 50 free passes to the fans that was waiting to see her outside the hotel she was staying

@Mister Wizard I dont know how familiar you are with Hip Hop from the 2000's but Kanye sure did make a big contribution to all of rap with his flawless production. I love Lana and I’ve never fully perceived her as authentic. For me, Lana Del Rey is pure emotion without reason. She isn’t something that you consider and ponder, she’s something you feel. I was kinda late learning about Lana. The first song I heard of hers was Gods and Monsters. It blew me away. It was so different. I like different. Nothing wrong with different. After I heard Summertime Sadness I went out and bought everything I could find of hers. I was NOT disappointed with any of it and I wait impatiently for anything new from her. I don't care about her past. She's wonderful and I'm in love with her!
I heard Video Games for the first time last year, and immediately grabbed my guitar, don't care about anything else about her. Authenticity is in your connection to the art.
Wow this was a great video essay. Lana is quite an intriguing artist. Don't really get all the criticism about her. She's brilliant as a musician and songwriter. The editing and narration for this video was really fantastic, shows you put a lotta effort into this.
she USED the controversy around her career to double down on her "doomed starlet who hates the press" persona. thus again becoming the melancholy underdog we fell in love with.
speak for yourself. I love it (probably for all the wrong reasons). Don't get me wrong. It's not good at all, but it's very entertaining to see all those vocal gymnastics xD
Do her dirty? It’s one of her most well known moments, and the fact was that it was blown way out of proportion and also highlighted the fact that even people with stage personals can experience anxiety and have it affect their lives and careers. The fact is that while she was badly received on SNL, she still managed to rise above it (even the SNL cast came to her defense).
it's important to mention it, because god knows every critique of her in 2012 had to do with that performance. critics fucking grasped onto that performance to try and justify their unfounded hate.
Love her for her being who she is. an authentic, poetic person, never give in to commercial songs to gain fame and famous. For me, every piece of Lana's songs is ART, there's no one can duplicate. I'm seriously proud of her for not being moved or changed by society, instead doing her own style, her lyrics, singing her own rhythms in her own way!
I love Lana del Rey's music to death but seriously... people question genuinity of the artist? None of the popular artists in the US are "genuine". Record labels decide everything from the style to song themes. This is the cruel reality. Artists have no real freedom in Hollywood.
That’s the thing about Lana, she only does exactly what she wants and that’s why she’ll be ever win a Grammy cause she’ll never be mainstream enough. Just as an example, she debuted a 9-minute long song on the radio just because she wanted that - her manager almost killed her.
Lol that doesn't make sense when artists release a record antagonizing nearly every audience and cause huge uproar in their target demographic because it talks about serious social themes. Beyoncé's lemonade is an example. It antagonized nearly the whole country, including the current government, all the while her mass appeal was waning. Beyoncé was still popular, but due to her releasing more and more controversial works, her target audience shrunk. Releasing the album was not a good marketing strategy. Neither was her previous album. Which is a whole other monster
This literally isn't true, Record labels don't decide everything for artists maybe a few but definitely not the majority. Don't say shit like this to make lana look more "genuine" than other artists.
I think NME made the best point about authenticity in music when they reviewed the Black Keys' Brothers: "Authentic? Who cares when it sounds this good?"
Woah, the timing of this video is amazing! I have been OBSESSED with Lana’s music lately. I saw her last year in Dallas and she seems very authentic and like a genuinely good person. Loved this video and learning more about one of my favorite artists, thanks for doing what you do man! 😌🙌🏽
Lana's music, videos, and image are timeless. Her persona is a reflection of classic cinematic and literary icons. Our society has become so obsessed with exposing everything about a performer that we fail to appreciate the beauty and mystery of their work itself.
In the song "Wayamaya" she say she belongs to "Ray" her ex boo, where she sings "remember when we moved and changed our names to Lana and Ray." "Del Ray" from/of Ray, which explains the o.g spelling as Lizzy Grant.
kriticosART it’s not edited photos, she has looked the exact same from the beginning of her career to today. She is beautiful, she looks exactly the same in the photos as she does in her live performances
her songs were written for her, very consciously, the productions were done without her input, the awesome videos are carefully constructed by others... but still, i adore her ....
I love and respect Lana so much because she is self-conscious and do not try to play this over the top "strong woman"- and it makes her strong woman for real.
A person could go insane worrying about this kind of thing. I used to worry about whether or not the music I was listening to was made by sell-outs or by manufactured artists or bands. Now, I don't care. I listen to what I like no matter the source.
A lot of those who don't "sellout" can still have very comfortable lives. "Sellouts" usually make mostly money for the industry and some of them don't keep as much as we'd think. That's probably why there are negative reactions to it because industry has incentives to monetize them so they push them very hard.
@@hushedtones7168 I think they are taking about more smaller bands who really don't make a lot of money at all. There's kinda this idea in the punk scene that if you start to get bigger you're automatically a sellout and don't belong in the scene. Thankfully people are starting to get over that.
@@katteycat genres are only a marketing package built around songwriting. If the songwriting so great you will blow up no matter the genre. If the songwriting is poor then you rely on trends and short lived tactics to finesse but it last only a few months. Without great songwriting you can sell out as much as you want in punk rock today and still make no money. All the money goes to 1990s bands who honed their songwriting craft. So better make the music you enjoy anyway. In every genre there's a novelty opportunity window to get in more easily. After that the genre is very tired and formulaic so you need to stand out and do new things to innovate and be recognized because instead of listening to a popular bands poor copy people will just listen to the old established original band. People who do punk rock today do it as night & weekend passion projects and they have day jobs to cover the bands expenses because most have average songwriting abilities. learning songwriting theory is the path to success in any genre now. If you write lyrics that resonate with people and they have good melodies where every note of every syllables fit with the emotion roller coaster of your lyrics then genre doesn't matter. If everything is rhythmically coherent then all you need is to learn to self-produce good enough demos. That's what all succesful acts have in common at least one person in any project focused & spent 3-5years learning and practicing the best knowledge about songwriting & music theory. Even if its easy to them now they worked hard on their songwriting abilities before it became second nature. From SIA to Bebe Rexha to Tove lo to Julia Michaels to avril lavigne to Kacey Musgraves to Katy Perry to Taylor Swift they all shine from their songwriting skills. Even pop stars who aren't that good songwriters will need to get with the best songwriters but then the songwriter will make most money from the song and the performer will make money from the brand they create around themselves with touring, merch, sponsorship. A lot of people can sing great but very few can objectively write great songs. If you spend a few thousand hours practicing and read 4-5 of the best 15$ books about songwriting and analyze 200 top100 songs melodies, chords and rhythm you'll get there within 2-5 years if you have interesting things about you to share or life experience that people can connect with in your lyrics. If you want to make it as a instrument performer (drum, bass, guitar, singer) then you will need to practice 10 000 hours and still depend on other people's songwriting. But there are still plenty of middle class people in the music industry they will juggle around 5 to 20 different income streams that earn them 0-5000$ per year each. Even top DJs all they do is profit from good to great songwriting that they self produce or did interesting sound design over it.
Great video! Please do Marina and The Diamonds (now known as Marina)! This girl has something really special about her. Usually I am more into extreme music but she is the sole reason that got me more into pop (although she really blurres the lines with most songs, especially from her first album, The Family Jewels). I see a lot of other people who like death metal and stuff that get into her too, which is just incredible. Cheers!
@@hide904 really happy to hear that! I got hooked on by Froot and it was the first song I heard from her. I love how many styles there are in this song, from the 8 bit video game waves to the funky bass. Oh, and the opera part at the end kills me every time (savages has this too) :D. You should check out her first album, it's a masterpiece imho.
@Konstantin Kirilov dude I was JUST listening to her first album some hours before as I am currently progressing through her discography. "Shamping" is one that really stands out to me!

I feel like her singing in a lower register really messed up people's perception of her. Like when she was on stage in her early performances as Lana she wouldn't sing all to well but when she'd hit those high notes they were heavenly. All I know is is that her voice is amazing and I wish people would research and not just base someone's talent off of one bad show( SNL). Thank you for making this video.
I think Yayo is a great song to show her range. She sings the hook in a medium tone, next in a higher tone, and finally in a deep sultry voice. I love it.
So, my wife looks just like her, and my wife's name is Laura De Reyos! Unfortunately, my wife is less famous. However, she is an excellent entertainer.
I am all for modernity and yet my knees feel weak with her romanticism and nostalgia for old times. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. It is actually beautiful and probably an honest admission that we are complex creatures, and can harbor a lot of conflicting feelings and emotions in our hearts.

Such is the case with many performers and celebs. What they show you isn't necessarily fake, at least not entirely. Oftentimes, it's a particular aspect of themselves that is just singled out and gets made the focus of their professional identity. Other times, it's their entire selves, just exaggerated.

Lana’s always had a certain aesthetic. Born to die just allowed her to expand it
Daddy’s marketing budget and the marketing made her aesthetic, she was nothing like that when her name wasn’t even Lana del rey
Jessica Croteau he changed it to David Bowie bc there is already a Davy Jones
To be fair a lot of people thought that Bowie was inauthentic back in the 70's. It was only in the 90's that he started to be seen as a musical legend.
How can you put Lana Del Rey in the same sentence of David Bowie ffs...
The pop world is so brutal to women, she is simply a great artist. That's it. Let her be that.

Looove this comment very much. I do agree! ✨
👏👏👏👏👏
You explained it so well! Thank you

Honestly, I was considering the authenticity thing only because I recognized the 'push' she was getting. She has a very distinctive visual aesthetic and her music really beautifully paints a world. Would you blame me for being a little doubtful whether it was all her own creation?

Kanye doesn’t fake his persona. Look at his track record before the death of his mother, Donda, prior to the Taylor Swift incident Kanye wasn’t controversial. Kanye just hasn’t been the same since the death of his mother.
Kanye is an aggressively ignorant, deranged, self-obsessed asshole...
@Mister Wizard I dont know how familiar you are with Hip Hop from the 2000's but Kanye sure did make a big contribution to all of rap with his flawless production. Although his lyricism and flow was "only" above average he could always make a dope beat out of classic samples from the beatles to even classical music. His overall knowledge about music is insanely vast which only goes to show in his production for sure. Don't get me wrong the dude is fcking insane and a terrible social figure plus I wouldn't go as far and say he's an absolute genius. But the man has mad genius like skillz when it comes to producing a track. Seriously his talent is outstanding and his influence in the rap game is undeniably big but keeps getting forgotten because he did some dumb shit on televesion again. What i am trying to say i guess is that kaynye has an "astounding intellect" when it comes to producing music but is a rich famous arrogant prick lmao
WHO CARES if her personality is "manufactured" she's a *GENIUS composer, writer, and singer. Period.* She invented her nostalgic, unique, *simply sublime sound.* If she was a man people wouldn't care about her contrived "aesthetic." Every *celebrity or public figure's personality is "manufactured."*
Invent and nostalgia in the same sentence. God damn you're one stupid idiot. Nothing about her music is sn invention. You can call it revivalist, but not invention. You seriously don't know shit about music at all. Typical low intellect sheep. And i can name you WAY more guys who got shunned by the masses for being inauthentic. As you sit there saying who cares if her personality is fake. Seriously what low standards for artistry sheep like you have and perpetuate. You are a sheep championing mediocrity. Fact.

The fact that people still talk about her having an on stage name??? Like do yall live in a bubble???🤨 That’s the most common thing ever
I don't follow any of this stuff and had never heard of her before. I am just discovering who she is with this video. Not everybody lives in tabloid media. I listen to the likes of Pink Floyd, Tool, Metallica, Led Zeppelin and the like. It is not as if this artist was ever going to show up on my radar, let alone know anything about her.
No one cares about that anymore. All that matters is that Lana is a horrible person. She is so racist and self entitled.
Thats true but sucks tho

Yes, editing is so good, story telling let me dim those lights.
I feel Lana is kind of struggling during the time of born to die. But from ultraviolence, she truly finds herself. I remember my first listened to that album, and from that moment, I knew she is the coolest person on this planet.
Blue Shit she was definitely struggling a lot with all the backlash she was receiving during BTD era. Ultraviolence almost didn’t happen. She nearly quit the music business because of all the hate ;/ We are so lucky she stayed and continues to make beautiful music.
Lana has been able redefined herself for every era of her albums.
there is something so mysterious and compelling about her, even after all the controversy her presence is so interesting and her songs are like hidden messages from the past
She studied metaphysics and crazy stuff with literature and metaphors and includes them and I'm not even a fan and I can hear it in the 4 songs of hers I've heard. Very interesting
Lana De Rey is a goddess, we got so blessed to have her
If u listen to her old music she literally explains her whole life basically
How would you know..? You didnt live her life. She could have cherry picked or fantasized. I've heard all of her songs a thousand times each at least, but I still dont have a full picture of her life. Just assumptions
Edit: Dumbasses, I wrote this with no malice she is one of my favorite artists. I'm just saying we have no proof her songs are factual because we arent lana. We have assumptions and quotes from her. That's all. Jesus.

I love Lana and I’ve never fully perceived her as authentic. For me, Lana Del Rey is pure emotion without reason. She isn’t something that you consider and ponder, she’s something you feel. I don’t listen to Cruel World and think about why you’d have your bible and your gun, I listen to it and feel sad but also like a new life is beginning.
I don’t like Lana Del Rey, but I like how you perceive her music. I can see how it’s relevant to you. I am guessing you have eclectic tastes.
Huh! This is the first comment about her/her music I've heard or read that makes sense and is eye opening to me. Very well put! I don't think the same way but I can appreciate how you think about it!

Wow this was a great video essay. Lana is quite an intriguing artist. Don't really get all the criticism about her. She's brilliant as a musician and songwriter.
The editing and narration for this video was really fantastic, shows you put a lotta effort into this.
I agree with everything you said ,she is a amazing artist ,I really love everything about her !!
she USED the controversy around her career to double down on her "doomed starlet who hates the press" persona. thus again becoming the melancholy underdog we fell in love with.
You didn't have to do her dirty and bring you up that darn SNL performance. That haunts our every dream...
speak for yourself.
@@franks8462 one of the two is like ok. Btw always been entertained by the performance too. Finally si see i'm not alone.
it's important to mention it, because god knows every critique of her in 2012 had to do with that performance. critics fucking grasped onto that performance to try and justify their unfounded hate.
Collin Meehan well it was a huge part of her career and the fact that she was able to rise above it is more of a compliment than anything
Py Ong yesssss ahe is such a queen
I love Lana del Rey's music to death but seriously... people question genuinity of the artist? None of the popular artists in the US are "genuine". Record labels decide everything from the style to song themes. This is the cruel reality. Artists have no real freedom in Hollywood.
Does gallant have freedom
Don't say shit like this to make lana look more "genuine" than other artists.
sure "lana del rey" is an orchestrated persona but to me that's art
In Conclusion, Lana del Ray is a goddess. PERIOD

Lana's music, videos, and image are timeless. Her persona is a reflection of classic cinematic and literary icons. Our society has become so obsessed with exposing everything about a performer that we fail to appreciate the beauty and mystery of their work itself.
Good point
In the song "Wayamaya" she say she belongs to "Ray" her ex boo, where she sings "remember when we moved and changed our names to Lana and Ray."
"Del Ray" from/of Ray, which explains the o.g spelling as Lizzy Grant.

@@cambodiaremyzero At the end of the day, as long as the end result is brilliant, I don't really care who did what.

Jhon Henry that’s a matter of opinion. One I disagree with.
I love and respect Lana so much because she is self-conscious and do not try to play this over the top "strong woman"- and it makes her strong woman for real.
Why didn't people just appreciate her vocal and her songwriting over the supposed indie backstory in the first place? She is one in a billion.
A person could go insane worrying about this kind of thing. I used to worry about whether or not the music I was listening to was made by sell-outs or by manufactured artists or bands. Now, I don't care. I listen to what I like no matter the source.
the thing about "selling out" is artists need to make money to actually live and keep making the music people take for granted
A lot of those who don't "sellout" can still have very comfortable lives.
"Sellouts" usually make mostly money for the industry and some of them don't keep as much as we'd think. That's probably why there are negative reactions to it because industry has incentives to monetize them so they push them very hard.
Hope Hartline you’re hot! Let’s mate
