I remember how much of a shock it was for me when she changed her look and sound for Ultraviolence, the black hair, B&W visuals, eyeliner, and more rock sound will forever be iconic. Can’t wait for more Lana videos!

It's crazy to think that the cradle of Lana Del Rey's indie music came into existence during a time where Lady Gaga's dance music, Taylor Swift's country pop, and Adele's ballads reigned supreme. She wrapped everything up in her finger for the rest of the decade.
Like she truly persisted and survived while so many people spent so much time overhauling their gimmicks 😭

Paradise is her forgotten masterpiece. I wish Paradise would have been her second feature-length album so to speak and tacked on some of her unreleased songs like St. Tropez, Paradise, Queen of Disaster, Never Let Me Go, Dragonslayer, Jealous Girl, Angels Forever etc.
At least Paradise was Grammy nominated but agreed! I'd have love it to be extended but I think Lana was already brainstorming about UV around the time she was finishing up Paradise.
Even though i haven't pay attention to popular music that much, since Lana's debut. I could hear Lana's influence in almost all pop music. Hence her being the artist of decade.
She’s basically touched nearly every corner of pop in some aspect, whether it’s visuals or theme or marketing. It’s kinda wild that she’s gonna be a point of reference for future artists akin to other greats.
i know lots of ppl say the same about their fav artist, but truly, i guess everyone can agree, even if they dislike her, that there is NO ONE like her, honestly.. even if their music is inspired BY her, no one can get even close to her sound, shés too unique
When you effortlessly change sounds every record never quite coming back you become an inimitable legend. Like Lana’s truly scores ahead of most of her contemporaries
I discovered her in 2012 but even tho I was streaming born to die I listened to most of her unreleased stuff all the time so she’s had a huge impact on helping my life

I remember when this album dropped I was in 8th grade and I was having a huge phase of loving classic Hollywood, the album came to me bc my older brother worked as a intern for universal music group here in NYC and he got a copy of born to die he didn’t want to listen so he gave it to me and I listen to it on my DVD portable I was so amazed by her lyricism particularly for her dark humor (that a lot of people don’t mention about) as well as how introspective and storytelling style it was, the musicality of the album made it felt like I was listening to a musical audiobook. I can’t believe a full 10 years have passed since born to die was released it feels like yesterday

9 albums + a Spoken Word record in 13 years is seriously impressive. While not a fan of every song, her consistency and evolution is really interesting and admirable and her singles are not the typical pop formula, making them always worth taking notice. I think because of her looks and her image she gets lumped in with many other main stream pop stars, but she's far from that.
You can really see Interscope/Polydor really reaching to sell her like a typical pop star early on, then sorta give up altogether when they realized she'd be a critical cult pop darling. It's an odd journey.
Honestly, your pop music deep dives and discussions only remind me that the 2010s was greatly shaped by the women in pop (with a few exceptions, JB, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars to name a few) but even now in 2023 we have "pop girlies" and the "queen/princess of pop" galore with barely any active major pop male acts. And also, Born to Die album still holds up for me despite it being released a decade ago and sounds like something that could be released today which just goes to show how influential as album Born to Die was.
I like to think it’s because of the pressure to innovate and differentiate. American male pop tends to box their acts in very few acceptable/marketable boxes: dude with guitar, usu former boy band member trying to emulate Freddie Mercury/the other greats, or rap/rnb crossover act and they just coast off that. We have the exception every now and then like The Weeknd being a big one, but even then when you really think about it, they put in a fractional amount of effort women in the field do because they can get away with it. Tell me what Shawn Mendes or JB is doing that’s truly never been done before or is a direct reinvention of what we once knew or did. The clear answer to solving the issue is elevating queer male acts, Lil Nas X love or hate him sorta raised the bar again and challenged the status quo. But then again, I’m not the general public and will never be.
Also agreed, Born to Die aged magnificently.

I was just starting high school when Born to Die released. It and all the albums albums that followed really have acted as backdrops for every year of my teenage to now adult life, so the nostalgia is heavy, but it's incredible how well each of her albums holds up to this day.

So interesting to revisit this album over a decade later and realize that, despite its obvious influence on pop culture throughout the 2010s and beyond, by HER standard, it’s probably her weakest release. She really did go from strength to strength with each release and develop her artistry so immaculately with the passing of time.
that’s honestly a really good point like every album builds on itself and prior work in a way its uniquely her but radically different from era to era, BTD being her worst (by default) is how artists should be… you DO want your first to be your worst! god she’s excellence
What do you mean?? BTD was arguably her best work of art, at least orchestically. In terms of lyrics, I think Ultraviolence, NFR, Honeymoon are her best. But it is def hard to say which album is her worst/best

She is so incredibly and ridiculously talented. Whether you like her or not , you can’t deny the fact that she paved the way for so much artists and has such a unique sound mixed with vintage Americana, melancholia, and glamour.
Paradise really changed the trajectory of my life & I think I listened those songs every day for three years straight

It felt more like an instant connection to something I was hoping for
As a very introspective guy (since I was a child), I always felt like an outsider
And there were just a few songs to say what I was feeling
Lana's music felt like i was being heard and someone was singing about feelings not much people wanted to talk about... feelings that I had feeling for so many years
It was a beautiful sound and I felt understood
Looking for more Lana songs I found some unreleased ones, like Afraid, Never Let Me Go, Damn You, Teenage Wasteland, among others
They were so refreshing and addictive to me
Yet, it felt like a secret treasure
I lived so many adventures with all of those songs as a playlist for my life
My life is different, and big part of it it's 'cause of Miss Grant's music

I was 14 when Born To Die came out. It was the first CD that I ever bought. I was listening to it in my mum’s car through my high school years. Knew all the lyrics of every single song on the album. Paradise is also so phenomenal

BTD + BTD Paradise Ed is my favorite collection of music of all time, ever. I give it a 9.5 out of 10.

Blackout ushered a new era of edm & hyperpop music, and Born to Die an era of melodic pop, yet the two women who gave us these magnum opus never received their flowers from this shit industry.
Literally the Recording Academy has yet to give Diana Ross a single award beyond a lifetime achievement “sorry queen” award
Listen I love Lana but I think part of the scrutiny she faced regarding the industry plant status was not because of her refusal to label herself but because a large-ish group of people really didn't like her music and style, and the label industry plant has always been a shorthand for "I don't like this music that's popular right now".

Totally iconic! And I agree not my favorite but what a way to enter the scheme of things... I'm so glad I just adored her from the beginning. It was the lyrics. I wasn't immediately a stan but I was captivated by her writing and couldn't get over it. Once ultraviolence came out I was done for. 💙

Carmen is actually about meth addiction hidden behind alcohol metaphors, since it's impossible to be about about that type of addiction and considering she's been through both she cleverly portrayed the one addiction through a lens more friendly and familiar to us
When she first came out I only heard about the SNL performance and hadn't actually checked her out for myself. Then I was gifted Born To Die for Christmas and I remember listening to it on the way to a Christmas party with my boyfriend at the time on a long car ride and it literally changed my life. This record had such an impact on my songwriting and it was one of those albums where I feel like I found it when I needed to hear it most in relation to what I was going through personally at the time. She really is one of a kind and I believe her impact in music will last for years to come. I feel so lucky to live in a time where I can enjoy and be influenced by her music. This record turned my world upside down and for me unlike a lot of songs I've listened to a hundred times where they start to lose their meaning, whenever I revisit this record it hits me like it's the first time I'm hearing it which is rare and makes me appreciate it her artistry that much more.
Born to Die was introduced to me by a friend on a roadtrip to the other side of the state. From the opening moment, I knew it was gonna change the way I write and dread and it did. I felt every word you wrote 😭

Still can’t believe I got into Lana around 2020. I guess better late than never though. I am obsessed with born to die, I still need to listen to the rest of her albums though. I’ve only heard Born To Die and Chemtrails Over the Country Club from start to finish.
Oh you definitely have to give NFR and Ultraviolence a listen at least! NFR was essentially the first Folklore (Swifties will fight me on that) and Ultraviolence I have a video coming tomorrow on!
For me... This album and era was released way ahead of its time and if it were to be released now it would've exploded everywhere and people would've had eyes by our time.
I personally think it is a solid debut but for me when it comes to my Lana rankings it and paradise may be low cause how much she has improved overtime but they both have their place in my heart.

From paradise my only not so fav is American idk it feels okay but compared to other songs it was meh for me but it could grow on me
Overall I'd rate BTD a solid 7 and Paradise separately 6.5 but in total 7.5 would be the whole completion, the thing is that she improved so much that's why it may seem both albums are low but they are still AMAZING.
During BTD era I was still too little to understand who was my fav (I lied it is Avril Lavigne and yes I still want to request a video about her one day) but I did hear about her when honeymoon was around which is odd cause it wasn't as commercial as its predecessors but I sorta started respecting her when NFR! came around but when BB dropped I became an actual fan and yes I may be late on Lana train but it's never late to enjoy best music 😩

This album came out when I was 19. Totally changed me. She introduced me to Nabokov and the beat poets, Gatsby etc, and I read some of the most influential books that year and I started writing again. I also fell in love that year, then years later wrote and published a book about that experience. Born to Die was the impetus for that and still continues to influence my writing now as I write my second book

Living through the born to die era was such a treat. With Lana we’re always witnessing genius, but at the time it was so new a forward thinking it truly felt out of this world. I waited for every video with baited breath, her tour outfits / fashion moments were so fuckin fresh, she taught me so much about art and living for creativity. Witnessing genius like that as it happens is a rare thing!
Very few people get to witness an era as magical as BTD as it happens! It was a different time!

In all honesty great video i remember how obsessed I was with her and this album during my senior year of high school. I looked up all her unreleased music and would find all the information I could about her because she seemed so different and out there which I think that a lot of her fans appreciated and understood. Flash forward today and many people who didn’t like her at first are coming around to her music.

No one “made” anyone if you had studied music you would know that each of these artists has different influences and not just Lana or whoever on the contrary, Lana is a small part of the whole package.. music is evolution and each artist leaves a part of herself to the new generations it’s a normal thing .. so MJ was "created" by James Brown, Fred Astaire, Bill Bailey Etc.. ? No. Mj created himself and his music/choreography ofc also based on his musical influences which allowed him to push his limits. Was Lana created by her other influences? no. Everyone every female artist creates herself, and creates her own sound (not everyone can do this but Bille definitely did that, Taylor changes sides based on the music market required by the consumer but even Taylor in pop was and is herself in her music) with ofc elements that come from different influences and artists! Anyone who says “one artist made another” doesn't quite understand what music was and is. A true artist like Taylor or Billie or Adele or Lorde Etc who does music alone with only 1 person with them in the music is the package of so many influences they had, not only one.
To say that one person created another is wrong and limited. Everyone was created by everyone even today's Lana music is influenced by the music she hears today .. music is evolution and a set of influences from everywhere .. and the rarity is knowing how to put together and overcome one's limits by creating your own unique sound .. this is the beauty of art. Lana wasn't the first, so many alt pop artists existed before Lana that they "created" her .. like Taylor, Billie, Lorde before them with many other artists who influenced them. They are on the same level. Madonna created specific production in the 70/80 based on the music of those years that came from other artists, not from the past but from her years.
Elvis didn't create rock n roll but he was influenced by those who already did that in black culture in his years at that time Etc bc music is evolution.

I'm kinda going through a born to die phase at the moment, have to Say there's something very kate bush the kick inside and the beatles she's leaving home and in my life about this record, and don't get me started on the string arrangements, she took me to heaven 😭 truly one of the best pop albums of this century especially when it comes to the instrumentals
The production's really amazing... Emile Haynie's truly one of the best and I do wish Lana and him would link up for old time's sake though she has a great relationship with Jack Antonoff and Rick Nowels

When the album dropped I sadly didn't even know Lana existed, mostly cause of the language barrier, but on 2015 I discovered her with young and beautiful, cause youtube recomended me the video , and I was literally shocked from how beautiful it was. for me it was kind of life changing I was really obsessed with lana haha, and of course the first songs I heard from her belong to the born to die era, I wish I could listen to it like it was the first time.
I remember first hearing Lana and becoming immediately entranced with how cinematic it felt. I’ve always loved seeing her journey in her musical career. And I’m so glad that in 2023 she’s finally getting the respect she deserves.
Lana Del Rey is great but she needs more critical acclaim like she needs to win some Grammys perhaps a Grammy Album of the Year. She doesn’t have to be subservient to the pop music industry but she needs to stay true to her self like she does and make something that is a masterpiece. She’s great but I think she still has potential to be better than she is today. She hasn’t even reached her full potential.
First became a fan after Video Games came on my dad's iPod shuffle when we were driving home from somewhere, and I went neck deep into the Lizzy Grant era on RUclips once I found those videos and all that came after BTD. Lana's personality and music have impacted my life in a beautiful, wonderful way, and she without a doubt deserved the Visionary award she recently won, and so much more.

I think something Lana brought really big to the table was persona. Like a new name/stage name, an aesthetic etc.
She made herself an event, she became akin to alt pop’s worst kept secret, the conversation about the persona and the art itself was insane
I refuse to feel cringe for playing Born To Die into the ground in college. It was precisely what I needed.
Like literally that album was formative for my 15-16 year old self, sans me getting so much flack for joking I wanted to date old rich men.

Born To Die is an iconic album. I think I listened to it every day in 2012.

It's good to revisit this era from today's perspective. I loved listening to her singles on the radio for years, check out every new era's vieos and singles, but never really listened to whole albums. She was an icon, whenever she dropped a single it was something big to witness. So even though I liked her, it wasn't until Norman F*cking Rockwell era and album that I really fall for her music 100%.
Now I regret all these years I've missed not listening to her albums, even though I was only 13 when Born To Die came out. So the last 4 years I spend re-discovering her again and I can't imagine how I haven't noticed what I've been missing all these years. Lorde, early Billie, Halsey, Marina (from Froot era) and many others that followed Lana's footsteps in Born To Die I had on constant repeat for years.
Born To Die is such a masterpiece and I'm really glad it's reputation had grown over the years. Without her, indie aestethics may never cross to larger audience in that scale we see it today. No indie-folky Taylor, no Kesha's Praying, Miley's Malibu and so on. All of these wouldn't have been possible if not for Lana's magnificient debut.
It's kinda crazy how she really wins over fans through the years. She really ushered in another way to measure success beyond charting which she did quite a bit early on! Many artists admit they would not be who they are today without her work and those that don't clearly still admire her.

It’s timeless!
Wow, I discovered Lana relatively late, in 2016. And even then it took me two years to dive into her albums before that. But Badlands and Blue Neighborhood were my favorite albums of 2014/15 which just goes to show how strong her influence was on those albums and explains how I got my Lana fix before I even knew it.
Blue Neighbourhood in my honest opinion is one of the best albums to pay homage to BTD

I think the first song I ever heard from Lana was actually Radio on Pandora. I was instantly enchanted and have been a huge fan ever since. I don’t usually revisit BtD, favoring her melodrama over her high production camp, but after watching this video I think I just might give it a heavy nostalgic listen.
Radio was such a perfect intro song to Lana, my friend's first song from Lana was Without You when I had to prove to her Taylor didn't do it first.

can’t wait for the ultraviolence video! i got into lana a little late, during the 'young and beautiful' craze in 2013. the only other song i knew by her was the summertime sadness remix, but something possessed me to search her music on youtube and i’ve been hooked ever since. by the time west coast and the ultraviolence album came around, i was fully on board, which is why that album is so special to me! love your videos!
Honestly, I think you got into Lana around the best time, kinda avoiding a lot of her detractors at their peak worst and around the time people started to realize who she is. I'm currently writing the Ultraviolence video and it's kind of a trip looking back.

People who said Lana has not influenced the landscape of pop girlies probably have not listened to artist like Mitski,Japanese Breakfast,Suki Waterhouse,Billie and so on
They probably just don’t realize how Lana made investing in this sort of sound profitable. I think when some try to discredit Lana for not inventing anything, they miss the point she helped labels realize it made sense to invest.

i think i felt actual love and appreciation for music the first time i started listening to lana (2013 at 12 y.o. lol). it's crazy as a long term fan to see her succeed like that despite the backlash and her deliberately pushing against the mainstream or the sales. and it's even crazier to realize that, 11 years later, BTD feels like one of her weakest projects and it's still that good.
I think the measure of an artist's growth is the distance from their first record they've taken and if they've retained an audience. By far, Lana's amongst one of the most grown artists of her time. BTD still has a chokehold on the GP with tiktoks of songs and demos still going viral but her most recent works are levels beyond. I imagine we'll see songs from her middle and later career trend too.
omg , I was so not into Lana when this came out.... everyone would say "oh I bet you like Lana Del Rey" and it would annoy me hahahaha .. but a few years later , all that changed ! Born To Die Paradise edition is one of my fav Lana Albums !!
Oh yes I remember when this album was released. I heard Video Games and her voice trapped me I was so interested in her so I listened to the album and I loved it I was in senior year in high school so it bring a lot of memories
It aged so well!
I first heard born to die in 2013 I think, I bought the whole album on iTunes without knowing who Lana was or ever listening to her music before, I just liked the cover art 😂 and honestly that was one of the best purchases I’ve ever made I thank my 11 year old self
Never underestimate the power of a great album cover like so many artists nowadays fail to get that like Lana is usually always on point with cover art!
Omg, I love Lucky Ones Demo Version. Its like an alternate universe LDR but luckily we got a taste of it.

Indie Pop is the best characterization of her style, there is nothing that "rocks" in her deep musical aesthetics; yet the latter are still a little subversive. Also, I think that she was much criticized because, I am finding out here, of her upper-middle class (or higher?) upbringing, which shows in her self-assurance and poise.
I think UV would really fit the Indie Rock sensibility but again I’m going off how critics and the awarding bodies label her music. And yeah, she was torn apart over her origin story which in hindsight she never really lied about.

Imo. Lana performed badly at SNL bc she was used to singing high notes as Lizzy Grant, then began singing with deeper voice when she became Lana Del Rey, which is she is not really used to. And Lana admitted that she hasn’t prepared for that performance. Also she had anxiety performing live on big crowds.
Lana definitely changed pop, while being her own genre. There’s no one can come close to how beautiful her music and art are.
She is timeless and will be an icon for years. Perfection and a goddess.

I think it’s honestly well constructed pop, but the placement on the tracklisting kinda hurts! Love to see it used in edits for characters and ships! An iconic song for that purpose as well!

I was feeling really nostalgic about this era and well “better times” (not really when you realize how vicious ppl were to the artists you loved: the treatment my trifecta of Lana, Taylor, and Ke$ha face(d)… it was not good but the music was transcendent.)

Heard Norman Fucking Rockwell (album) first, I fell in love with it. I ran through her discography, Born to Die era is iconic. The sound was soothing, different & the vocals, omg. These two albums were my most played last year & I am very excited for her new album.

so to b honest it was around the time when they over played ` born to die ` so i hated that song and i remember tho my roomate told me that her album is pretty amazing so then i fall in love with summer time saddness but didnt like the whole album , but when the EP Paradise came out you just knew it that shes goin to stay and be an icon , that ep mixed with more pop and and deeper ambient sounds i love every song there ! cut to ` gods and monsters`' a masterpiece . now days im a big a fan but it took me to re listen to ultravoilnce after 2 years to wake up and realize im obbbessed . This was the era that I discovered her, with Born To Die/Paradise being her only official albums. So lucky to have been a fan of hers so early on, and to watch to grow and mess with so many different sounds over the years. These albums are definitely throwbacks and soundtracks to my early adulthood. I was about 20 when I discovered her. I can easily listen to the entirety of BTD/Paradise without skipping a song, and I can't say that about many albums as a whole. But with Lana, there are quite a few of her albums that are just that good.

I am from Mexico and I was at college when Lana came out. At first I didn't like her because my first impression was like... oh, she is way too pretty, you can see plastic surgery on her, she's trying too hard to be pretty no matter what.... that was my prejudice, but I was not really listening to her music,. Then, after some months, I read into her lyrics and I was like wow, this girl is on another level and started loving her and I realized her music actually is very good, instrumentally and lyrically.
I feel like she truly committed to the excess of the times she came from. Nowadays people want effortless cool “natural” even though it’s arguably as curated and fake as the images from years’ past. It’s in the way she makes music that we realize she’s still v much the wild at heart writer she’s always been.
What about Bel air and Burning desire on Paradise?
