  • In this fourth installment of my Lana Del Rey retrospective series, we'll look into Lust for Life, her fourth major-label album which opened the floodgates and marked a return to pop and traditional promo for Lana. In this video, we'll remember the songs, the era, and why I think while it may not be her best era musically, it was one that more or less allowed her to drop the heaviness of her earlier eras. #lanadelrey #popmusic #lustforlife

      Oh for sure! She seemed really happy on the promo cycle to be able to reclaim the narrative a bit and just vibe. Interscope playing along and not steering her as hard as they try to steer other artists is a gift very few get but she definitely earned it. Lana’s pure sales and critical reception is fairly consistent.

    Honestly lust for life will forever hold a special place in my heart as my favourite lana album (despite being quite an unpopular opinion) and also being closely followed up by nfr, though I do like lust for life just a lil more. It was through the songs lust for the life and love showing up on my recommendation page back in 2017, that then opened up the gateway to Lana's music for me. I till this day still think get free is easily a top 3 in her discography with tomorrow never came, love, lust for life, heroin and summer bummer all also being within her top 10.

    • @EljohnMacaranas
      @EljohnMacaranas  Год назад +22

      I won’t disagree with anything you say. This record felt like a perfect blend between Alt and Pop Lana in some ways. Get Free is def Top 3 of all time. The fact people would chant for her to sing it on tour speaks power to the song. Radiohead knew how powerful it was.

      Summer Bummer is maybe the only song I don’t like, and some songs are ok, like Tomorrow Never Came and Beautiful People Beautiful Problems. But there are some truly amazing songs like Cherry and Lust for Life. I don’t like half of the tracklist, yet it’s my second favorite?

      Lust for life saved my life and I’m not even playing. I’ve been a fan since 2011 but lust for life when it came out was huge. I was in a very depressive state, and LFL was the only happy thing I had. I love LFL so much and it will forever be my #1. Newer fans and NFR fans don’t understand the impact it had. Somehow they stay oblivious to how huge the album was. It’s severely over hated. Summer bummer is also one of my faves. People hate it so much for what. I always say the coquette girls don’t like the hip hop, and the emo sad girls don’t want to be happy. I’m glad there’s people like you who understand the beauty of her best album.

    On LFL Lana wrote about things bigger than herself and her failed relationships. It’s so versatile too. Pop, trap, strings, folk, piano ballads, and hip hop all on one album. And seeing her smiling on the cover was a breath of fresh air. This is why it’ll always be one of my favorites.

    • @ilonanylsen
      @ilonanylsen Год назад +11

      I feel like Ocean blvd is more of a lfl album, a transitional one. She incorporated a lot of NFR samples, some chemtrails and bb mentions, while also portraying the vibes of these 3 albums into one personal masterpiece. It also has very different tracks, same as LFL, but way more polished. And it also has this feeling of the something big happening after it, especially after she ended the album with VB remix. So yeah, I think the next album is gonna be a very different vibe from her, just as NFR was after lust for life.

    My thoughts: I feel like there's two concepts with LFL. Her personal lust for HER life and the hope she has for the WORLD. Somehow, she connects both very well.
    The first half mostly centers around her, and the second half is her message to the world. She ties it nice with the last song, "Get Free," because while she is talking about her struggles to free herself, she is encouraging us to free ourselves too.

    LFL is what Katy Perry thought Witness was, “Purposeful Pop”. Songs on the album from Coachella and onward are still so relevant to the climate of the world. She made this album for the people and captured the feeling of living in such a divided world in constant war with itself where it feel like anyway the world could end in an instant. Tomorrow never came is a favorite of mine because of that, a love story in a nuclear age. And she ended the record with hope of change and a batter tomorrow where Get Free is a proclamation of a shift in Lanas life. There is so much more I could say but Lana says it herself in the album. It is why I believe Lana is such an important voice and artist in this generation.

    Honestly I love this album as her journey was (somewhat) mirroring mine. It came out when my political outlook became more disillusioned as much of the world seemed to have taken a frightening lurch to right wing politics. And lana too seemed to feel the same and was now speaking up.
    Conversely, this was a great year for me personally when I was feeling the happiest I had for a long long time, after years of mental illness and low self-esteem. And to see lana , an artist known for her sad image, smiling on the cover and singing songs about love and embracing life, just really resonated with me! I was also travelling that year so was in different countries whenever a new song came out - listening to them still brings me back to those wonderful places
    So overall, it felt that both lana and I had gone more cynical in terms of politics, yet had found more personal happiness and fulfilment. Also the features in it are just perfect

    Overall, I personally think it is definitely her most overlooked album in both general public and her fanbase (can say about honeymoon but there are so many honeymoon stans I can't technically say it still love it tho)
    The aesthetics, the sonics and the messaging she gave us with this record is honestly so iconic, I can't wait to take a photo with marigolds on my hair once April rolls around cause yes those flowers on her hair are gorgeous....

It’s tough to be an album within Lana’s discography, I’d argue it’s harder to name an album in her discography you like least than it is for you to pick out the worst T*ylor album. Only bringing her up bc they have discographies of similar lengths!

    i dont think ive felt a music release as internally as when she released the title track.... i was all over that. 2017 was an overwhelmingly strange year looking back on it... humorously, stylistically and politically. she managed to soundtrack all of those new societal shifts with cinematic and youthful songs, incorporating trendy sounds to blend with her own style and narrating the witnessing of history without it sounding cliche or done a thousand times already (like every musician now releasing music relating to the pandemic). it is the definition of a 'blockbuster record' for me. the track list might be long and inconsistent, but there was so much to say. the euphoria of this one is unmatched too... maybe because 2017 was a good year for me personally. even if this aint my fave lana album, the sound and feeling on this one is the first thing that comes to mind when i think of her. she captured a moment in time so perfectly with this one

    This is personally my favorite album from Lana, although I think her best is NFR. Tracks like Love, Lust for Life, 13 Beaches, Cherry, White Mustang, Groupie Love, In My Feelings, WTWWAWWKD, Heroin, and Change are some of my favorites from her and so underrated compared to the rest of her discography. This album has definitely the most political themes in her discography as well as a call back to some of her influences.

    Did you know that 12 years ago, on September 26th The Weeknd discovered Lana Del Rey through tumblr, and was the first one to ask BBC Radio 1 to put 'Video Games' on their playlist. In fact in an interview Abel admits that when he met Lana, he felt that he had found the girl who was writing in her songs, that is, I found her muse for her songs. The Weeknd and Lana met in 2010, the year in which the Weeknd launched "Trilogy", and it is seen that they became very good friends, so much so that the voice of a woman who sounds in "Lonely Star" is inspired by Lana del Rey and it should be clarified that Lana helped a producer the album, "BBTM".On the surface, The Weeknd and Del Rey might seem like very different artists. After all, The Weeknd’s music hip hop and soul sound feels more in line with someone like Ariana Grande. Meanwhile, Del Rey’s career lives much more in line with rock-infused pop. However, the two artists are much more similar than the genres of their music might reveal.For instance, The Weeknd and Del Rey both often capture a dream-like quality in their songs. In addition, their lyrical content dips into dark territory, such as their preoccupation with drug references. So it makes sense they would work well together. And so they have. Beginning with The Weeknd’s 2015 single “Prisoner,” they’ve worked together on five songs.Although the Grammy Awards have yet to bestow a trophy to Del Rey, her work certainly makes a huge impact on The Weeknd. In fact, the “Blinding Lights” singer once revealed just how vital she is to his own music. In a 2015 interview with Pitchfork, The Weeknd explained the interconnected nature of Del Rey’s music and his own.
    “Me and Lana have been friends for a long time. I’ve inspired her. She’s inspired me. I feel like we’ve always been talking to each other through our music. She is the girl in my music, and I am the guy in her music. It’s just this ghostly collaboration that feels the most natural on the whole [Beauty Behind the Madness] album.
    Even the whole monologue intro on “Lonely Star” from [my 2011 mixtape] Thursday - I just realized now that that’s Lana. That’s Lana’s voice. I mean, it’s my voice pitched up, but it’s her. It’s who she is. She was definitely the first feature that I wanted to bring on this album.”
    The Weeknd and Del Rey are more than just collaborators, it seems. The pair’s music - according to The Weeknd - is spiritually linked. Perhaps this revelation puts into context not only the collaborations between these two but their respective catalogs as well. As great collaborations he has Prisoner, Party Monster where Lana makes Background vocals, Stargirl Interlude, Lust for Life and Money Power and Glory an unreleased remix by The weeknd for the album Kissland but the original is from Lana's album Ultraviolence.Anyway, long life to this wonderful collaboration. This is easily my least fave Lana album but this video is amazing and made me gain a new appreciation for it! Loved it when it dropped because I think it’s what the world needed at a time where people felt such an overwhelming sense of anxiety regarding the future and devastation about trump’s win in the 2016 election. Summer 2017 I listened to the album non stop but after that I have never really cared to revisit it. I was 15 when the album dropped and 21 now so my taste has changed a lot and there’s a handful of misses for me on this album. But even listening to the songs I dislike from this album now makes me feel like I’ve been transported back almost 6 years ago, reliving that summer. It’s almost like a time capsule in that way. There are some songs from this album I adore though and will never get tired of (tomorrow never came and beautiful people beautiful problems to name a few). Kinda went off on a tangent but thanks for making this video! I still think it’s Lana’s worst album for me personally but this video reminded me why I used to adore it and I think it serves its purpose among the rest of her discography, transitioning into her new era. If it wasn’t for LFL we wouldn’t have had NFR or Chemtrails or Blue Banisters

    • @EljohnMacaranas
      @EljohnMacaranas  Год назад +2

      I feel like Lana’s so good at making music even her least best album still has a great impact on her fans and her own music. If LFL really is her worst moving forward, she’s getting so many lifetime achievement awards. And YES. I swear in 2017 everyone was on edge about the future and what could and would happen and Lana was there staying optimistic when the rest of the pop world leaned into the darkness. Truly someone who refuses the trends.

    LFL will forever be my top Lana album, because it was the first one I fully listened to and it gave such catchy songs. I was gagged when the chorus to God Bless America came. Such a hook. To me this record was her response to the Trumpian chaos at the time. It has the usual themes of Americana that she muses on but with a playful, carefree, at times sarcastic touch to it lol. Remember the trailer to this era? The one with her as a lone homemaker inside the Hollywood sign. She rarely shows humor like that.
