Really like the look of this. Energy based card games may be a dime a dozen but I like what this has done with the timeline mechanic and the dueling context.
Splat has to remind us an awful lot in recent times that he actually really and definitively does not like card games despite playing them all the time. ^^ Which is fine by me - I love card games!
When you said, "Energy based card game," I was prepared to roll my eyes but I gotta say, this actually has a lot of novel ideas and seems like it's getting polished in all the right places - that art and animation is pretty rad. This was a rad find, and a great exposition style too. Thanks, Splatt!
This looks amazing. I love the perfect information for a turn type mechanic and the art style is truly wonderful. Being able to see the queue reminds me of the complex combat planning that you have in a game like Shogun Showdown. I’ve added it to my wishlist and will certainly pick this up when it goes 1.0.
Oh god. In a world desperate for really high quality gladiator games I started watching this ... heard the word cards and sighed so sadly my cap leapt off the bed.

People never complained about randomness in their available actions until the term “deck builders” started going around. Broadly speaking, this design choice is usually just enough predictability and unpredictability to make a game tactically interesting. Copying an already existing style of it or not, half the time you can even get away with implementing it poorly (if it wasn’t for the fact that some people are loudly fed up with it). Ofc a well designed system is gonna feel much better for much longer, either way there’s a huge variety of ways to implement this simple-ahh concept in a game, but _”It’s all slay the spire now”_ for some reason. Make whatever games y’all want And shut yer mouth about DOOM clones Oh wait, nvm that was 30 years ago…
@ that last part is a joke, it’s not meant to be taken seriously. But it did mean something. Basically every early first person shooter were just copies of each other until some of them differed enough from the source to become something like Half-Life and a defined genre instead of just “DOOM clone”. I’m making fun of people that are complaining about the genre and saying every deckbuilder is slay the spire. To some extent there is a lot of games being designed way too similar to slay the spire, but at the same time there’s a lot of games that are completely different (like this one) which people still resent due to this ONE THING in the design of its core gameplay loop. In the end, clones are what makes the world go round whether we like it or not; and instead of immediately dismissing anything, we should look for those clones that are unique amongst the bunch, or just say we’re too fed up with them to look for new ones *without talking trash about the whole thing* If it wasn’t their kinda game, they would keep it to themselves, but even in this video of a *very* unique game, there’s *still* people shouting dEcKbUiLdEr around as if it this is anything like the other games saturating the strategy genre
i detest deck builders and absolutely feel like this trend is being forced on us, as they become more poular yet i dont know a single true gamer that is down with playing card games on the computer. if i wanna play cards, ill play cards with the homies. but why do we need these damn cards in our games??
@ there are absolutely no other games out there for you to play. It’s all deckbuilders. If gaming is now synonymous with deck building, maybe it’s time you stop playing games. There’s *ONLY* deckbuilders anyway
@ honestly, I’d challenge you to tell me of a single card game IRL that is comparable in design to the “deck builders” splatter has covered recently. It’s absurd to claim all these games are the same or are just card games or that you can’t find anything else besides them on steam or wherever
After finally trying slay the spire this year, i can say card battlers are good if done right. I didnt know how good spire was due to all the copycat games out there i accidently tried one of them under the idea that they were akin to something like mtg. So that kinda turned me away. Slay the spire is perfected and very fun, it is more akin to playing the old school dnd campaigns where players used cards during gameplay in a similar fashion. So if anyone says card battlers are similar to ccg, and tcgs they are wrong dont listen just go try for yourself
All the curmudgeons on here disliking card games crack me up. Even first person shooters are ‘card games’ to a point - pick a weapon *card* - weapon has different attacks, ranges, reload times, etc *cards*, pick a secondary weapon *card*, etc If you are going to hate on a game, hate on the implementation, not the presentation. Makes me wonder if the developers changed the cards to be called ‘abilities’ and made them more tied to ‘training’ and which weapon & armor are equipped (like it already is to a point) if people would give it more of a chance.
Well that's a too specific example of a card games definition. We can pretty much imply that "Card game" they're all hating are "Turn based card game", since we don't really call an action based card game a "Card game" really. Take Dead Island 2 for example; it's actually using a deck of card for a presentation as some kind of skill tree, you pick some cards, place them in your slot and the card skill activate as your passive. It's definitely a card yes, but literally no one would call it a "Card game".
@@lumbermac5998I think it looks pretty good and unique. I understand not liking it, but I don’t see the issue with devs experimenting in the genre. There are plenty of action games out there if you’re interested in those.
I get it. I'm not a huge fan of the card mechanic, but I'm also realizing that cards allow you to manipulate the RNG more than other games like Battle Brothers(which I love) which can be wildly erratic in RNG outcomes.

love the mechanics but artstyle is all over the place. Neither dark/gloomy from darkest dungeon nor bloody actions from coliseum, nor greek/roman ish. UI is rigid dull brown and the icons are ... cave art?
Splat has a bad approach towards deck building. These games often require you to make a consistent card loadout. That is you remove the useless cards and only keep a hand size worth of cards. So that you draw the good cards every time. Grabbing every card you come across is rly bad.
Dude. I feel like you should stop saying you don't play card games. 50% of what you play you are like "so this is like Slay the Spire, but it's not a card game" and they are always a card game haha. There's nothing wrong in admitting that's what you like.
Got two seconds in and saw the top comment was 'deck builder'. I feel bad for not supporting the channel with views, but deck builders just need to stop.
Decbuilders are plague of modern gaming. Its like substitute for any kind of gameplay nowdays. I mean a realy good one from time to time is nice, but it like almost everyone does it nowdays.

Is it always the AI that declares its moves first? Sound a little unfair... but not sure how would work the other way around.. interesting gameplay
