its an amazing 2nd monitor and oled steamdeck game in the current state of the game. also nice to afk farm while asleep. i thought updates would come sooner, but until we get trade, more combat skills, pvp, and leaderboards. . this is essentially a side game for now while you watch youtube/twitch/etc. Andrew Gower is updating the game regularly, and what is pushing us fans of the game is being part of a community not focused on mtx or p2w systems. The grind is long but worth it as the quests are quite interesting and it feels like we are part of a growing world pre vanilla. If you are in it for the long grind without p2w or mtx constantly draining your wallet, this game is for you. Andrew Gower is also open to feedback so the game can change just by you as the player suggesting as many others have, like cooking being more meaningful. We forget game devs are humans just like us, and you can't ask for a more better dev that cares about their game like Andrew Gower and his 2 brothers who is on record for saying he regret slowly losing control of Runescape to Jagex. funny enough, Andrew Gower's company and name of his engine: Fen Forge , is across the st to Jagex company building
Never be afraid of being 'negative' if that's how you feel! Your grounded pessimistic realism is why I watch you and it's refreshing to hear someone not pussyfoot around how they feel about games
I like the game but I completely agree with his negative points, the game needs a lot of improvement in those areas by the time it leaves early access.
@@NovaMosh Yeah his 'negative' points are not even negative in my opinion. Just facts. But I'd rather take a bit of negativity over the constant toxic positivity everywhere else.
@@celzolsen8988I think that's really the distinction, Peon is never "toxic" towards a game he doesn't like. Maybe I'm just more mature but I'm not so offended that he and some other reviewers don't like this game. Usually reviewers tend to be toxic because negativity generates clicks, but that isn't so much the case here. But just saying "these are the features, and I don't like these features", is such a perfect way of putting out a negative opinion!

Honestly thank god Peon told the truth here. I could see this coming from miles away. Just looking at the art, the room instance system, and the fact that Gower didn't want to hear ANY criticism on it.
@@alreawon1212 you have a very loose grasp on what Ai is don't you? There's nothing about a game giving you a prompt for what might be considered inappropriate language that screams "Ai". They could just have a list of words that prompt a response like every MMO for the last 20 years before Ai

Thanks for the video mate, I felt similarly about a lot of the stuff you picked up on. However I'm encouraged by the fact they've already patched some of this stuff after player feedback. I'm enjoying the game so far and am hopeful that it's laid the foundations or greatness - but we'll see! "If the game's not fun in the first 10 hours..." - exactly, if you're not having fun then don't play it, maybe you'll like it in future after improvements / more content, or maybe it's just not the game for you, which is completely valid!
It's easy to forget that Brighter shores is a brand new early access title - it hasn't had 20 years of iteration and feedback like Runescape has. I wouldn't write it off *just* yet, might be worth coming back to
RSC Was more enjoyable on release due to some sense of actual progression. Yeah it lacked a lot of stuff but the base line was actually set up to make you as a player feel like they are progressing towards something/actually feel stronger with level increases, Which this game even if it is early access, lacks completely its like he has gone backwards 20 years and then tried to make everything feel worse.
@@Genesis.Duriel I disagree... I played Runescape 2001 on a private server.. It was unplayable garbage. Couldn't even fit my screen and everything was low poly. Runescape wasn't good until the Old Runescape era. Which took 5ish years to reach...

I feel like Runescape's jank gameplay only works for one reason and one reason alone. Because it's Runescape. It's kinda like a feel. Feels oldschool, is ancient, has a ton of stuff to do, works, everyone else who wants a game like that plays already... I doubt anyone wants another one of those with a fresh coat of paint when the best version of that feel already exists.
You made very good points and unfortunately I believe I feel the same way just seeing how it all works. I was hoping for something with a good sense of progression I could play with my twin but I think I'll wait a bit and see if they change it for the better soon. Thank you for saving me the time as of now~ ^_^
I went into the game expecting it to play like an early access mmo developed by 8 people. And that's exactly what I got lol. It needs ALOT of work but I think there's potential. The sound design is 10/10. Cozy is the right word to describe my time playing before I get bored after about an hour.
@@consular4038 No, but when its an MMO you need to take it in to consideration. MMO's are the single hardest type of game to make and require the most attention even after release so the fact that its a team of only 8 people grants lenience
@@beardedrake9983 lol. Slow burn games like this have a massive audience of casual players who enjoy chipping away and progressing slowly over time. I maxed an iron on OSRS by playing very casually and consistently for years.
@@beardedrake9983the irony in ur comment is absolute hilarity, lil bro couldn’t stand that he only gamed for an hour. He brought out the dragon heat breath “AHHHH ONLY AN HOUR?? F U”
I think the feeling of progression is the main issue. Definitely a game to play whilst you're working or doing something else. I'm 12 hours in and just bored as hell. I'm getting that "well whats all this grind for?" No dungeons or bosses to really grind, ridiculous quest requirements (they needed more and to be varied). I get the game is early access but you can't use that as a shield to deflect criticism if you like the game. I heard people saying that this has been in development for years albeit a small team+passion project also. I really feel there needs to be more to do.
"I never really thought my character was getting stronger despite getting armor and weapons" Such is usually the case with level scaling in MMORPGs, if you still feel the same in combat despite having better equipment, having more abilities, and higher stats, then what is the point of having the standard leveling system?
This has nothing to do with level scaling in BS. Even if you go back and fight a lower level mob, you still don't feel stronger. The only thing you feel is that you have more hp, but your damage and the dmg you take doesn't really change or at least not in a meaningful way
The issue when I was testing. You max hit is effected by the mobs level. I hit easy 40 to 50 vs low enemy's. Only 30 for same level mobs. The mobs can hit 40... I think there are extra hidden stat's on the weapons. Aka level does play a big roll in its armor pen
@@Sephiroso. My point still stands. Making combat an equal playing field rarely works in MMOs from what I have seen because players of the genre love the positive feeling of character progression ie you can not deal 2-3 damage on goblins in OSRS.
i have been having a blast since the first hour i just dont think the game is gonna click with a runescaper.. they will never play anything but runescape lol, most players ive talked too in game who are enjoying it dont play runescape lol
@@Sloppyjoe96 I’m a maxed Ironman on RuneScape that have got into the shitty RNG grinds so this game with skilling has been an awesome change of pace lol
@ i never maxed a ironman but i have fairly high level 85 skill level characters on osrs and rs3 i dont have it in me to even grind to 92 lol and got bored but i am enjoying this game so far i probably wont max anything on brightershores either lol
Was enjoying it for awhile. Got lucky and found a legendary weapon, though as I leveled I barely hit any harder so i figured most of the attacks are linked to a strong weapon. Quickly saw that you start from "scratch" with the newer episodes, and the fun of a RNG autobattler with 2 shots of a bow quickly faded into me quitting the game. Happy people enjoy the game, but for a 2024 release, even in early access its a very bare bones games even after all the QoL changes they did. The skills were not even meant to co-relate later on, but he got the idea from a X / Reddit post so he might add it. Atleast on OSRS all your skills matter and are used for later or earlier parts of the game. He wanted to create something similar but wanted to differentiate the game so much it became a worse version of what already excists.
yea osrs having 99 smithing to make level 40 armor, so important, the usefulness of the skills in rs3 is a lot better becuase the level you need to make something matches the level you need to use it, so (imagine this) skills are actually useful in ironman mode,
the so called QoL changes they did should have been in the game from start, Gower cultists acting like these patches are great when it's the most obvious things that have been missing. It's actually pathetic
I felt about the same after my first day playing BS (on release day) but then... I woke up thinking about it. And now I'm ALL over it. It really opens up as you move forward, but if the draw of getting some Fancy Capes and such won't push you forward, skip it for something more your flavor. It's 8/10 for what it is, and could be a 9.5/10 by the time Ep5, 6, yadda, are released.
"with monthly subscribers" It's so funny how you didn't mention a number. "It could be 2, it could be 20000, we don't know but they do have monthly subscribers, that's for sure!"
As an RuneScape player who started in 2006 I really tried to give this game a fair shot but between the zoned based profession system / equipment and the instanced rooms I just can't do it, it's not fun to me.
I played RS as soon as it came out and was 2D. I feel like I’m getting in on Brighter Shores while it’s in its infancy and I’m excited to keep playing and be around to watch it get better over time.
honestly, as someone who never got into runescape, this at least feels more modern, even if it is a bit clunky. haven't played it a ton, but it is a nice chill game to relax with. idk. i appreciate the coverage even if we disagree, its why Ive always liked your videos.
I like the game for a lot of the reasons you don't. the simplicity is refreshing as someone who was always significantly behind the curve in terms of runescape content. I like the graphics as well. the biggest negative is the "starting over" when you go from one episode to the next. I'm sure there's a way to make that work but right now it seems pretty shit.
the only thing that restarts is your gear and combat profession. this keeps everything equal. imagine you level your combat to level 200 and then u go to the new zone and the enemies r only level 50. it wouldnt work and would be dumb.
@@xjbar5109 Every MMORPG does this and it's not dumb, you have different leveling zones for different levels, if you're 200 and go to a 50 zone, it's ok to smash faces there because you're OP, but you can go to a lvl 200 zone and you'll be balanced with the same challenge.
@@xjbar5109tbh if i level to 200 to feel strong early and are allowed too, like a reward for being persistent, that's better than resetting progress ..worst design choice ever
Ive been likely the game. The fresh combat style starting point for each zone doesnt feel as bad starting in zone 3 when you unlock the 3 weapon crafting styles (one for each faction). Lets you start a new zone with level 0 purples for all 3 weapons and a shield. The unattuned items can be used at any of the obelisks to attune the items to that zones.
Good to see not everyone is glazing a bad game even though it is made by a once great dev. Gower has a 500 skill level in Game Development, but he moved to a new episode and now he is lvl 1 at Development of Games. No they are fundamentally different and have no overlap whatsoever.
I cant believe this is a brand new game and it still has that janky ass movement system. I mean just look at the crab walk at 4:24 .... This must be late april fools joke.
2:20 I just saw the subscription prices, they can't be real? 30 day sub is cheapest one, 90 day sub I loose £5 for nothing? And the 365 is 5.10p a month?
When devs don't know math you can't expect a good game. Also, that's probably why there's no feeling of getting stronger when leveling up and getting new equipment.
I didn't think I'd enjoy the game, but tried it anyway because it's free. After playing it for myself I think it's a great game. Definitely try it. Watching others play doesn't do it justice
Honestly this feels like a mobile game that'd you'd play when not grinding runescape then remember runescape is actually on mobile so you wonder why you're actually playing it
I feel like this game is either you love it or hate it. I have played RuneScape (now osrs) most of my life and I cancelled my membership cause I can’t stop playing brighter shores. I do not think anyone is wrong if they don’t like this game. But I also don’t think it’s trying to be for everyone. It’s Andrew’s passion project. And while he will try to make it as good as possible with content and QoL updates I don’t think he is worried about it being a huge success. He just wants to make enough to be able to keep developing on it and when I play I can feel that love and passion for it that is just lost in modern games. Great video! I love watching peoples brighter shores videos positive or negative!
@ I just look at it as another skill I need to level. When I play osrs I don’t care about PvP or PvM. I just want to do an activity, gain experience, level up, and get the dopamine hit with a cape to show off at the end. This game is exactly that. It’s my favorite part of RuneScape but without some of the stuff I find annoying
@@DreamingPhenom bro u have to find different monsters to fight that arent higher lvls than u. if u keep fighting the same enemies they will scale to a level too high for you to defeat. so u have to go explore and find another group of enemies that are at or below ur level, by the time those scale u can go back to the enemies u fought prior and beat them easily and vice versa. it keeps the game from getting stale and clicking on the same cow or rock crab for 40 hours.

My apologies if this has been said already, but i thought being an mmorpg veteran yourself, you'd have realized that there's elemental damage of sorts in this game. Like goblins are fire i believe and weak to ice attacks, so if you loot a ice element halberd you'll do more damage.
I hope to see a lot of improvements on brighter shores in the near future, especially related to the combat. I definitely logged back into RuneScape for the first time in awhile to scratch the itch Brighter Shores couldn't.
I think your right generally but i would say end of ch 2 it things start to come together a bit more there is overlap but they definitely need to build more in all areas. Being a custom engine i think they have a good foundation to build on.
6:52 Yeah, there are more clicks to engage combat because certain enemies will be immune to certain damage types and you can equip 2 melee weapons and a range weapon, so selection which weapon can be important. In general, people tend to get in a few range hits before switching to their melee. You get used to it. Plus, they did make it a bit easier since you played. They added the ability to just left click and select 1 2 or 3 on your keyboard. I don't think its better or worse than Runescape, just slightly different. I mean, OSRS you just click, sure. But you also can't mix range and melee. And eventually, magic special abilities too (which haven't yet been added to the game). It allows you to mix multiple combat styles into one. It's still easier than RS3's Evolution combat, which is how most mmos work.
Made it to level 218 and that was enough for me. Once you hit level 25 in any craft it’s an absolutely massive grind. So much running, will take hours and even days for a single level. Quests also give little to no information that you need to google only to find out you need XYZ level in alchemy. One quest was level 50 alchemy which would take days. This game is stuck in 2004 and will appeal to only a very select few. Maybe it will get better over time but it wasn’t for me. You’ll need to invest massive amounts of time.
Survived to 32 carpentery because im not even playing the game. Just afk all the time and log once a day for one minute. Super slow progress, but not wasting my time while i level to complete the episodes. I see no future where this game survives the next 3 months in this state.
Had similar complaints about the game. Mainly the crafting of food. I think the food should be used more then just make profit with. Let he players eat the food, get a small bonus out of it. Like maybe a +1 damage, +10HP, +A-SPD, etc.

@@Datgamerdad1 Not at all. This review was not constructive. The basic summary is, "yuck," not, "these things need fixing." A bunch of the complaints showed boldly that he had not read any of the release notes or guides. So how is it "complacent" to say that the game is in early access, that the engine took the first X years of development, and the review and the comments ignored reality? I don't think the game is perfect. I just want to see people giving constructive and realistic criticism that isn't just gamers being whiners. If you want to be a critic of game design, don't just complain about things you bump up against, learn WHY they are and what can be changed, and what a reasonable timeline is. Patches with QOL changes have been mostly daily. I am not complacent. But I don't want to see ignorance kill the prospects of continued daily improvement. People will see this review and assume that this is the state of the game. It is not. People will see the comments and assume changes are coming in too slow because this has been years in development (including a game engine) with a team of, what, less than a dozen people? And that's an unfounded assumption. So the difference is, where you see complacency in me, I see a need for understanding of why just whining isn't an end to itself in the gaming community, however it may feel like satisfying puffery. Educate yourselves! This applies to so many aspects of life.
I've gotten all skills in first area to at least 20, and just got to the 2nd area... mostly playing out of novelty, I got some dopamine here and there. Thats fine, but dont bring in points as to why the game is bad when you enjoy a game that does the exact same stuff but 10 times worse.
@@DHAGSFU You couldn't be more wrong. In Runescape I grind for a purpose. I get my agility up because I need it for a quest or a shortcut, so I can then train something else more efficiently or farm a certain monster more easily. I get my combat up to move onto the next bracket of items I can use, some of those items which I use for hundreds of hours in the end game. I can kill a monster for hours and hours, then finally get that one drop thats all worth it. None of this has any merit in Brighter Shores. Your gear is disposable, items you create arent even used in any facet of the game, and there is no social aspect. Cope harder.
Which runescape are you comparing it too? Classic, RS2, RS3, OSRS or OSRS w/runelite? Because it reminds me of Runescape Classic the most 13:48 The skills do start needing other skills later on in the mines. but it would be cool to see 3 or 4 different skills needed to make things, You need to get to the 3rd area to really understand what theyre going for with Brighter Shores, which sucks beacuse you have to pay for it so most players trying it out wont see it
I personally like it quite a bit. It is still in early access and the updates are already coming in pretty rapidly. If you were around for the initial first year of runescape, you could possibly be a lot more open-minded in the major possibilities of improvement. Also, the further you get, the more the skills do overlap. Each area adds new skills, which add to further skills or older ones. Gathering adds to cooking as well as bonewright and alchemy, woodcutting for carpentry which is for most weapon crafting skills. Gear becomes different once you choose a class, which unlocks the type of gear you will be using (type of weapons and armor.) Progressing is meant to add to each area not just the one area. The further you get, the more skills there are and they further tie together. Basically, you shouldn't focus on just one area but progress and gather more skills to add to older skills and areas. I would suggest giving it a try and maybe invest the small amount for a month. Going passed hopeforest really gives you a better idea and picture.
I'm new to this type of mmo so the idea I get from this is "go play runescape instead" which is fair tbh, anyways I'm gonna give it a try and see by myself, thx for the video and hopefully will update on this.
Could do with some side missions linked to skills, the lack of missions may be due to it being just released... hopefully more content will come but, have to say I am enjoying it so far.
"Skilling for the sake of skilling" is basically the runescape at launch. Turns out that Andrew Gower just made the exact same shit he made 30 years ago, and surprise surprise it doesn't really work anymore.
I think the legalized afk/logged out farming and skilling is a really cool feature that might go some way towards combating all the rampant botting and gold farming and selling that every mmo seems to be plagued by.
in the settings the default is 'right click menu' as left click, so you can set it to do the first option upon left clicking ironically, your critiques of this game are pretty similar to a lot of peoples critiques when they first play runescape back in the day, coming from another mmos, Sure a lot of people play runescape now, but back in 2004-2006 there was a lot more players that didnt like it at all for similar reasons. Nowadays people still like runescape and its a lot better than it was back in 2004, its safe to say that BrighterShores will also have a lot of good improvements over time but these will be made at a faster rate because thats what happens when you learn from your mistakes.
Thanks for the honest review. I didn't realize Brighter Shores was just free to start and not completely free to play and that combined your impressions of the gameplay and systems helped me decide that the game isn't for me.
I like that their trying out new systems not seen in the genre, but the basics with respect to UI/Chat/Mouse Inputs felt bad. Despite my own negativity towards the current state, it's a fun thought experiment to try & figure out how to make these systems more engaging and interesting, without scrapping them completely for what we've played a 100 times. An example would be: minor passive stats or boons for each chapter's combat profession that do carry over similar to a roguelite; this way there's some carry over progress and I'd be more excited to get to the next combat profession.
Three clicks for combat seems a good idea tbh as people ingames want to checknor inspect an enemy but if combat is one click you might attack the enemy by accident and die and maybe loose exp , items or durability on items for making a mistake so in a game like this i think 3 clicks is good
Watching this made me just want to try RS3 since I never really gave it a shot as a level 126 OSRS player. Might let this one have more time in the oven before I give it try
ya it the game seems to open up more in the 3rd chapter where you can craft your own armor and weapons if you make it that far very grindy, the rooms and how its made keep all the areas from becoming dead, but ya its a work in progress.
I warned people not to get too excited. The Runescape that most people know and love was not built by Andrew. He was already out of the picture by the time you started playing. In fact, he had some really, really awful ideas he wanted to put in Runescape too. A lot of the jank in early Runescape was by his design.
No he was in the picture for sure when i played it. When 2007 scape released he was very much still there. I played it right after rs2 released. He didn't leave till 2010-2011--you are trying to take his credit away with some lies you are spilling. Edit: Grammar
Definitely feels like true early access - as if there's no content yet, but you're allowed to grind for it in advance. The main quest also ends relatively early because it sends you to a zone that's not released yet. I purchased one month of membership, but I don't think I'll continue at least until the new zone is added. The game lacks depth. Hopefully it will be improved in the future, because overall I kind of like it. I just don't think there's anything particularly fun to do there yet.
I love the skilling. What i don't love is after level 20 in each skill it feels like a soft lock with no way around it. Was taking minutes to level each time till 20. Now it's like an hour per level
The room based design really just shows how long Andrew hasn't been involved in RuneScape. The origin of RuneScape was a MUD (Multi User Dungeon), which historically consisted of multiple rooms you move between. Andrew took this old-school MUD design and made it a "modern" game. It's basically a 1990's game with all the limitations that come with being an old game, except it didn't need to have those limitations. Brighter Shore is a self-imposed outdated game. Andrew is a bit stuck in the past. It's probably more a game he made for himself and other folks who mis the old MUD games.
This game was outdated 10 years ago. And the few new things it brings to the table, are terrible. Like the progression system, region locked gear, and multiple combat professions for no reason.
I was really enjoying Brighter shores (and I don’t care for RuneScape much) until I found out each profession’s progression is locked to chapters, then I quit.
I think this might be nice in the long term (if the game has one). Because whenever a new zone/episode drops everyone starts from zero. It's hard to prevent power creep in MMOs and this seems like a nice way to go about it.
I like it because it's not overwhelming. There's 2 pairs of complimentqry skills and your combat skill to start with. Then in Hopeforest there's one more, a new gathering skill for apothecary, and a new combat skill. Honestly that's a better design for noobs than Runescape imo.
what is the problem with this. for example, zone 3 is the mining zone. why would it make sense for woodcutting to be there? by keeping skills in their respectable zones, it keeps the playerbase alive and gives u reasons to go back to earlier zones. if everything was available in each zone, everyone would be crowded in the latest zone..
You should try the MMO entropia Universe, where everything is monetized, every item, even Ammo. Has a crazy story behind it, one planet in this game, got sold for about 300k $
I'm enjoying the game. I never bothered with Runescape, wonder if that factors into it. Pros: - No launch issues that I can recall, very smooth launch experience and the client is responsive (no lag). Wonder if the room design helped here. - I like the graphics and music. Has a certain charm and character for me. - Relaxed gameplay. Can be played semi-passive for the busy individual. - No lack of things to do so far. - Scaling and progression make sense to me, despite lots of people complaining. Cons: - Can be quite grindy. - Niche game, and also maybe not for the 4+ hour daily gamer.
I had imagined the grid layout meant that the game was going to incorporate some TTRPG stuff which is pretty popular right now. Sad to see that it did not do so.
I agree with most of the negatives you list here. There is only one thing that I just don't get - almost everyone I've heard talking about this game so far says that is super ugly and the way it looks is one of the big things deterring them from it.... and yet I find the blocky design charming and actually like the washed out palette that doesn't hurt my eyes from looking at the game for too long 😀 Overall, I don't think right now the game is worth investing too much time or money into, but the devs seem to be really trying to improve it bit by a bit, so I will be definitely returning to it in future to see how it changed and give it another chance.
You should do a video covering OsRunescape leagues, it's a temporary mmo game mode for runescape and it's so insanely fun. A lot of people who are into like runescape and brightershores, may not know it exists.
Imo the game is kinda trash, a lot of its design are so dumb. Skills locked behind episodes? combat locked in this stupid pokemon arena style? trio class system without option to respec? maps instead of true open world? skills literally doing nothing? like buying ingredients from the vendor to create food that does nothing but being able to be sold. wtf is this shit game bro. If it was from different devs, this game would get absolutely smashed in reviews. it's just a horde of Gower cultists keeping it alive
game is in early access. Good feedback im sure andrew will watch this video. The thing that people dont seem to grasp is that this game is quite obviously missing a lot of features and polishing of systems in general. There is so much room for growth, and the devs are doing a fantastic job responding to player complaints so quickly. If you think the game is too basic/not ready then just wait. Its not going anywhere

I agree with almost everything you said, but I hope that the game will improve with time, runescape wasn't built in a day and what made OSRS so good over the years was that the devs listen to the players, the devs already showed that they listen because they already fixed one of the issues you pointed in the video (the 3 clicks for combat, you can now put a setting to do the first action). I really hope they improve and come up with good progression cuz yeah right now other than having a cape that no one cares about, there is nothing to grind towards.
Someone linked your video in the games' discord, and the level of cope was crazy. All negative towards you, because you're making valid criticisms about their new favorite game, but to me, you perfectly articulated my thoughts, and outlined some major issues about the game that basically ensure a short lifespan in its current state (which will not change any time soon, because developing new content takes many months) I played it for 60 hours, and I'm now at a point where you just endlessly grind with no "purpose". Andrew will soon add leaderboards so the elites can compete with each other as the player base continues to dwindle (because there is literally nothing to work towards, other than increasing your total level number which is good enough for maybe 10%, being generous) As of right now, I would not recommend this game to anyone, even if you are part of that "niche" game crowd, the game is just too barebones in its current state.
I never played any of the other runescapes but for some reason this game did scratch some kind of nostalgia for me. Ended up playing like 5 hours straight when just wanted to make a character and check it out lol
Ive never seen a game that charges less per monthly memberships than quarterly, or a full year membership. In the us the monthly cost is $5.99, then you have a 3 month for $23.99 or a year for $74.99? Usually when purchasing a longer membership your supposed to save a few dollars, so why is choosing the monthly option the best haha?
I put in 80 hours and will try it again when it has more content. I see huge potential. What it has shown me is the huge appreciation I have for Oldschool Runescape, I'm going to go back and play the ironman.
Although I do agree on alot of what is said here, Episode 3 does do a better job of linking skills together, the problem is its behind the sub, which needs to be moved into F2P
The fact that a subscription is $5 a month and a one time pass for 90 days (that's three months, $15 at subscription rates) costs $20 really lays bare the expectation of subscription services. They really do build the fact that people forget and keep paying for things they don't use into the cost, jfc. Or the payments guy is really bad at math, idk.
@@rickthiccem It does auto-renew. It even says as much when you go to purchase the premium pass in-game and in the steam checkout... "you just buy game time" yeah brother, that's a subscription lol? This game gave me big OSRS vibes.. so when i saw the combat "resetting" between chapters i just noped out and started playing OSRS again. Been having a blast.
@@JackBWakeham For gathering/crafting skills yes, but for combat, no. They just givce it a different name, but it's essentially your chapter's "combat skill". I would have been okay with the chapter system, weren't it for the chapter specific combat skills. I'll be honest, I am pretty happy with it so far. Gives me similar feelings to when I first played Runescape. And I do like many of the QoL improvements or differences to Runescape. Definitely going to put hundreds of hours into this game... entirely F2P, naturally. Only time will tell if I can find myself still doing things F2P after 15 years, like I can with Runescape.
Man i was really expecting a more positive review from LazyPeon TT_TT but while i enjoy the game i understand all the negative feelings, btw there is an option to assign 1 click actions so is less tiresome that way, but hey i hope in a couple of years we get a re-visit :3 awesome vid as always

"I never really thought my character was getting stronger despite getting armor and weapons"
Such is usually the case with level scaling in MMORPGs, if you still feel the same in combat despite having better equipment, having more abilities, and higher stats, then what is the point of having the standard leveling system?

Because it reminds me of Runescape Classic the most
13:48 The skills do start needing other skills later on in the mines. but it would be cool to see 3 or 4 different skills needed to make things,
You need to get to the 3rd area to really understand what theyre going for with Brighter Shores, which sucks beacuse you have to pay for it so most players trying it out wont see it
I personally like it quite a bit.
This is just copium. RuneScape was a far better game on release than this trash.
Hell yeah, I've been waiting for this video
I love your reviews keep up the good work thank you very much ❤
I think the legalized afk/logged out farming and skilling is a really cool feature that might go some way towards combating all the rampant botting and gold farming and selling that every mmo seems to be plagued by.
in the settings the default is 'right click menu' as left click, so you can set it to do the first option upon left clicking
ironically, your critiques of this game are pretty similar to a lot of peoples critiques when they first play runescape back in the day, coming from another mmos, Sure a lot of people play runescape now, but back in 2004-2006 there was a lot more players that didnt like it at all for similar reasons.
Nowadays people still like runescape and its a lot better than it was back in 2004, its safe to say that BrighterShores will also have a lot of good improvements over time but these will be made at a faster rate because thats what happens when you learn from your mistakes.
The level and gear "resets" in each zone made me immediately stop playing. I'll just play Classic WoW for the 30th time.
Will you be doing pantheon?
it just feels so much like a mobile game. at least in runescape theres a bunch of wild stuff happening. murderers and vampires and all sorts of npcs.
A lot of the jank in early Runescape was by his design.
this game shows clearly this guy has no fucking idea what he is doing
Hit the nail on the head with this comment
Pros:
- No launch issues that I can recall, very smooth launch experience and the client is responsive (no lag).
Cons:
- Can be quite grindy.
- Niche game, and also maybe not for the 4+ hour daily gamer.
I don’t think I can play this without falling asleep.
I had imagined the grid layout meant that the game was going to incorporate some TTRPG stuff which is pretty popular right now. Sad to see that it did not do so.
I agree with most of the negatives you list here.
There is only one thing that I just don't get - almost everyone I've heard talking about this game so far says that is super ugly and the way it looks is one of the big things deterring them from it.... and yet I find the blocky design charming and actually like the washed out palette that doesn't hurt my eyes from looking at the game for too long 😀
Overall, I don't think right now the game is worth investing too much time or money into, but the devs seem to be really trying to improve it bit by a bit, so I will be definitely returning to it in future to see how it changed and give it another chance.
You should do a video covering OsRunescape leagues, it's a temporary mmo game mode for runescape and it's so insanely fun.
A lot of people who are into like runescape and brightershores, may not know it exists.
The RUclipsr whose review I was waiting for!
Love the game honestly.
Same!
Same
You’re not being honest.
game is in early access.
NOTE: Only Chapters 1 and 2 are FREE, everything else requires a subscription and currently there are only 4 Chapters in the game with Chapters 5 and 6 having To Be Determined date.
The Brighter Shores Premium Pass costs $5.99 (USD) per month. There are also bundled options where you can buy multiple months at a discounted rate for a one-off payment: 90-day Pass: $23.99. 365-day Pass: $74.99.
Having a monthly subscription with NO announced update cadence is real bad as you could be paying a monthly subscription for literally NO new content for months at a time.
It's 4.99 not 5.99
There's so much content already tbh you just didn't play much
@@RSRatornraGBP VS USD probably…
I agree with almost everything you said, but I hope that the game will improve with time, runescape wasn't built in a day and what made OSRS so good over the years was that the devs listen to the players, the devs already showed that they listen because they already fixed one of the issues you pointed in the video (the 3 clicks for combat, you can now put a setting to do the first action). I really hope they improve and come up with good progression cuz yeah right now other than having a cape that no one cares about, there is nothing to grind towards.
Someone linked your video in the games' discord, and the level of cope was crazy. All negative towards you, because you're making valid criticisms about their new favorite game, but to me, you perfectly articulated my thoughts, and outlined some major issues about the game that basically ensure a short lifespan in its current state (which will not change any time soon, because developing new content takes many months)
I played it for 60 hours, and I'm now at a point where you just endlessly grind with no "purpose". Andrew will soon add leaderboards so the elites can compete with each other as the player base continues to dwindle (because there is literally nothing to work towards, other than increasing your total level number which is good enough for maybe 10%, being generous)
As of right now, I would not recommend this game to anyone, even if you are part of that "niche" game crowd, the game is just too barebones in its current state.
I never played any of the other runescapes but for some reason this game did scratch some kind of nostalgia for me. Ended up playing like 5 hours straight when just wanted to make a character and check it out lol
will it be available on mobile.
bruh maybe around 4 hours i commented on your last video asking about a video for it and HERE IT IS!! XDD
The squared tiles makes sense in a town, but when I saw the beach ughhhh... not sure I'd get used to that
Although I do agree on alot of what is said here, Episode 3 does do a better job of linking skills together, the problem is its behind the sub, which needs to be moved into F2P
You cant subscribe at the moment, you just buy game time
@@rickthiccemI'm subscribed. I don't know what you're talking about
@@ArcaneEiro It doesnt renew automatically
@@rickthiccem It does auto-renew. It even says as much when you go to purchase the premium pass in-game and in the steam checkout...
"you just buy game time" yeah brother, that's a subscription lol? You can choose/cancel it so that it does not auto-renew but it is still a subscription, don't get it confused.
i'm actually really enjoying brighter
2:18 why does the 90 day pass cost $5 more than if you just subscribe monthly and the yearly is $3 more.
This game gave me big OSRS vibes.. so when i saw the combat "resetting" between chapters i just noped out and started playing OSRS again. Been having a blast.
Was this not just an issue of people understanding how the chapters work? Pretty sure nothing resets, and it's just a new set of skills?
@@JackBWakeham and it’s a terrible system.
@@JackBWakeham For gathering/crafting skills yes, but for combat, no. They just givce it a different name, but it's essentially your chapter's "combat skill".
I would have been okay with the chapter system, weren't it for the chapter specific combat skills. Besides that, no matter how high your level is and no matter the gear your got dropped, it still feels like your didn't improve and can still die to easy mobs.
Don't lie nothing resets.
@@ScreaminNorman 👈🏽 a liar calling others a liar is wild.
It would have been cool if equipment actually changed how the battles went
i'm really enjoying the game but i never played a runescape game before.
I haven't seen anyone who likes the room mechanic.
I heard a nerd called Andrew loves it.
Ive tried runescape many times OSRS and RS3..... Never could get into them at all even leveling some skills to 60. With Brighter Shores, im loving it and am addicted. Already subbed for a year compared to me never doing that with any other game i ever played. We will sre how it goes tho.
Episode 2 actlooky looks good visually. Hoping he does tweak rooms adds more enemies allow more players. Adds loot pets maybe combat pets.
Need more mmo mechanics ahhhh I'm still playing it though! put a lot of hours in
this game makes me so happy. it is so simple, yet so fun. lvl 200 now and still having a great time :)
You would play flappy bird for 100's of hours and say you're having a great time. Truly dogshit water game.
Man i was really expecting a more positive review from LazyPeon TT_TT but while i enjoy the game i understand all the negative feelings, btw there is an option to assign 1 click actions so is less tiresome that way, but hey i hope in a couple of years we get a re-visit :3 awesome vid as always
To basically you pay to let the game play itself. Where's the skill?
@@ArcaneEiro Pay? i'm a f2p is just an option.
@@michindor5959 only an option till you hit episode 3?
@@ArcaneEirowut? 1 click actions means I only have to click a rock 1 time to mine it. So far enjoying the game and they have updated map clicking and the combat clicks now
