Ray, I just wanted to let you know that after a careful review of this and several other videos, you are now qualified to work as a dentist and an obstetrician.
After the prank he pulled yesterday on his Wife Unit, it's probably a good thing that he's diversifying his skill set 😅
You will find your missing 10mm socket on the bolt to the air filter box rear of.
For 150k, that engine is clean.
And a gynecologist! 😂
@@patrickdineen278well cared for and likely mostly highway miles
10 mm socket left on airbox lid, firewall side. Love the content.
another 10mm MIA
I fell asleep half way through and just came back to finish the video. I also saw that and had to see if anyone else noticed the MIA 10MM
I noticed it to and was wondering.
This is why I drive old cars and trucks. Jam this newer stuff where the sun don't shine! New stuff really does suck. But hey keeps Ray sharp and busy. I'm too old to play anymore
I have both. I love my old hot rod, but my newer cars have been less work
I bought a 1984 F150 4×4 with a 300 -6 .5 speed manual transmission. It had a rust free body, but the motor was frozen up. Rebuilt the motor, new clutch, brakes, and went through the rest of the drive line. I have a grand total of $5000 into it, including a new paint job. No way I'm paying $60,000 plus for a new one. PS. 5 New tires, too.
@@steveb6103 You have a keeper there.
The front engine mount is a hydraulic frequency dampener that is vacuum operated. It adjusts as needed to facilitate smoother feeling engine performance. It is an on or off VSV valve that activates it. If you want to know more about this engine in particular. The Car Care Nut has a lot of info on these, especially with the revisions and the updates these have. This one should have the updated all metal oil lines for the VVT and the oil pump on the front of the engine.
When I get a jerk for a customer i red locktit every bolt 😊
Ray, you didn't beat book time because you did a thorough proper job. The labour-guide is just a "guide" ... Now that I'm in a wheelchair and can't work on my vehicles any longer, when I take my vehicle somewhere for repair, I always tell my Mechanic that if he needs to take longer to do the job properly to make sure he doesn't need to rush, I'm willing to pay an extra hour (or whatever depending on the job size) in labour charges to have it done properly. The high cost of low price is quickly forgotten when the quality doesn't match the price you pay. Words I live by thanks to my late father who was a mechanic for 50 years. I also apply this to contractors working on my home. As such I never have horror stories and always a quality job! Cheers Ray and thanks for another great video!
This is why I don't wrench professionally any more. I only do it as a hobby, so I can take my time. When I was at the dealership, I flagged 2 hours for every hour I worked. I still did quality work, but occasionally overlooked small details that I wasn't being paid for. Now, I can be thorough, since the money I make isn't paying my bills.
@@aaronbritt2025 It's really hard to find a good mechanic. I'm lucky I found one after my father passed and I ended up partially paralyzed from the waist down due to an accident. I tested out a few mechanics with small jobs to see how they handled it and what clips they broke etc. before I settled on the one I have now. He's really busy because he charges fair prices and does quality work. (I can see why he's busy), so I don't wait on things. Small things I can do, like oil changes, coolant changes etc. with the assistance of my spouse being my legs / hands.
With the amount of sensors that can malfunction in cars today, it is a miracle they work.
Yes, its better to own an older car and maintain it properly.
Just think about the mandated kill switch. Starting in 2025. When those start screwing up and shutting down cars. Tow truck drivers will be making money hand over fist!
There is no mandated kill switch law. Simple google search clears that up.@@steveb6103

Ray seems to have survived the "JEEP THING INCIDENT" It will only be spoken of in hushed tones for years to come. Papa and meema will reminisce in the golden years about the day Meema Lauren learned about what a "jeep thing meant".
We will just have to see if in upcoming videos if Ray has any welts on his head from Wife Unit. LOL
@@timothyweers8054 The voice sounds the same.
I hope that 10mm that you used was the one that got abandoned on the air box. It's always the 10mm that disappears into the abyss. I'm personally proud of you for keeping track of all those bolts and connectors. I know I would've had to go back at least 3 times to fix something I missed or forgot. Keep up the good work
Ray, your commitment to putting it back the way you found it is commendable.
So the RTV sealant on the coil plugs was putting it back the way he found it was it? What happened to the cable tie method, i mean that isn't professional either but it was better than sealant, Ray totally let us down.
@@Steve-fs4zhare you serious we only care that it works sometimes it’s better to do the easy way instead of punishing yourself for Toyotas decision to use inferior coil connectors that literally break by looking at them I have this toyota and I can verify these connectors are complete garbage from the factory maybe up north you might be able to not break them but in the south where we see ridiculous heat during the summer no toyota connectors for coils survive intact once touched
Normally I just do sarcasm and backhanded compliments because this is such a fun channel. Today I’ll be a bit serious. I have the 3.6 litre VVT GMC Acadia that I’m rebuilding. This video helped me out a lot so thanks. I’ve never been so frustrated by a vehicles design and engine placement. You gave me another idea for the build and I must thank you for that. Great job Ray.
My hat's off to you sir. The amount of patience and perseverance is beyond remarkable. You da man, man!! Glad you enjoy doing all of this and I've become addicted to your videos. Way to go sir. Have a great and safe and wonderful Christmas with your family as well. Keep up the videos
not to minimze the work this job took but it could be even worse man. this is easy shit compared to what one could be stuck doing
Little known fact:
The correct weight oil for these engines is printed on the oil filler cap. (I believe 0w-20.) Using ANY other weight oil can affect the function of the VVT actuators on these engines and hey….might even throw a code!
Anyway, you gotta appreciate Ray’s innovative connector repair.
Another interesting video, Ray! Amazed at your ability to work one-handed and provide narrative while simultaneously problem solving and chatting with his crew..
Oil weight for the various incarnations of the 2GR-FE has changed over the years. The biggest issue is people not changing the oil at proper intervals, thus eventually messing up the VVT due to the changed hydraulic properties of dirty/old oil. I'll forever stand on the 6 mo/5,000 mile change interval!! I also believe this issue is why Toyota moved to electronically activated VVT solenoids in newer engines, getting away from oil-activated.
@@DIYDaveOK Totally agree on oil change intervals. Coming up on 160K on my 2010 RX350 with zero issues. I figure if you go with manufacturer recommendations, especially with Toyota, that’s the safest bet.
(Spark plugs are a royal pain, glad I’ve got no oil leaks on that valve cover.)
@@DIYDaveOK --I concur, we have a Lexus that Manufacturer recommends 10,000 mile oil changes, this is crazy to allow an engine to go this long between oil changes so I change every 5,000 using Mobil One....
I have a beemer 520d here in the UK. How do BMW justify setting an oil service interval of 18,000mls? I think they set these silly figures to attract the high (for the UK) mileage business and fleet operators. As a private low mileage owner, there's no way I can leave my oil & filter for more than 12 months!
bought some connectors for my injectors on amazon. instead of splicing the wires into the harness, I de-pinned them, and replaced the broken connectors. At least on the front bank. On the back, I went with the zip tie repair.
Imagine doing all those bolts by hand! Battery operated ratchets are a godsend!
WOW, can't believe the amount of work required to replace valve cover gaskets on these modern cars. Back in the day, here in the UK I was a Mini fan, not the HUGE mini's BMW now make but the original Mini's. To replace rocker box/valve cover gasket OHV engine. Remove 2 bolts, change/swap out cork gasket, put 2 bolts back in, job done!.
Or just pop it out, stick it your pocket and carry it to the shop.
Ray, you are a better man than me! This is the sort of job where I would end up with several parts left over when it's done, and absolutely no idea where they go!
Merry Christmas to you, Lauren and the rest of the family, as well as all your fans here on YT!
Love it! Not just spark plugs / brake pads!
BTW at 1:04:39 you left your socket on the air filter box hold down. (maybe you'll find it later in the video, if so, please disregard).
Thanks for adding the time stamp 😅
Ray, a seal puller tool is the best way to remove those spark plug tool seals. This eliminates the risk of scoring the valve cover itself. Given that the engine had 150k miles with no leaks, they work well. I have had the tops of the seals “catch” on the spark plug tubes and not seal properly when reinstalling the cover…this will result in the plug sell filling with oil and misfiring. Visually checking each tube seal using your mirror (or camera) is a good practice prior to installing the coils. Ask me how i know.
This video makes me miss the older vehicles. You know where you can climb in with the motor and close the hood and still work on them. Things have just gotten way to technical for me. Great job Ray you perseverance is commendibal sir.👍👍
that's one reaon that i used to love my old Triumph Spitfire- the whole nose would hinge up to the front and you could sit on the front tire and work on rthe engine. problem was, you had to do it all the time...
@@stevelang3171 You're doing it wrong. You buy two so you always have one to drive. :)

Thanks Ray great as always. I would like to wish You and your Wife & Children units a Happy Christmas and I hope 2024 is good for you. Thanks for the past years content. From the UK.
I seriously hope that you are pullin' everyone's chains about the new 'project jeep'. that, in my own opinion, is a complete waste of your time and money and Lauren's patience. please say it ain't so. on the most positive note, I'm always liking the content with your unique commentary. thanks and keep it up.
The vacuum lines going the motor mounts on Toyota are to help reduced vibrations from the engine being transmitted to the vehicle. On one of those vacuum has a solenoid on it that is computer controled. The computer pulses the solenoid in time with the engine vibrations to reduce the ammoint of vibrations felt by the driver.
Thanks for the tip about using RTV on seriously broken connectors! Going to do that with the connector for the fuel pump on my 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.7. Discovered the fuel pump was failing (but not failed) when a mobile mechanic found it was pulling barely an amp and had to replace it. Damn connector had a sketch tape job on it!
The other tip I saw was using a part of a zip tie to lock it in place...
This case, there's no room for that type of fix😢
Its enough to remember how everything came out and goes back together
CONGRATULATIONS!!! You now have a 1minute of commercials at a time before we can skip it. it used to have one and we can skip.

Have a Merry XMas, I wish we had a garage that is as good as yours in the uk. the attention to detail is excellent. Well Done. Also very entertaining.
I'm ordering an aftermarket set of coil connector housings for a few dollars. Changing them out is simple--they were made to be serviceable, especially as a DIY without time constraints of a working shop.
Agreed, anything over 5 years or so, expect them to be so brittle that they'll break just looking at them 😅
I love working on vehicles. I do it often.
I personally don't know how you do it with tools scattered all over LOL!
I have to clean and organize between each vehicle. I would lose my tools and fasteners if I didn't clean up.
Anyone who performs that job day after day will get to know all the shortcuts and beat the "flat rate" clock every time. Ray you perform "perfection" on every job you do. Merry Christmas to you and your family and staff the best in the USA.
NOT boring watching the auto surgeon work.
this job is a nightmare in the Toyota Sienna (2007-2010). I just did this for our Toyota Sienna 2008. It didn't have any error codes, although the bank 1 #1 cylinder was misfiring on an ~annual basis, throwing a P0301 code. Removing the coil and plug revealed the coil was very dirty and the plug (only a year old) had already took on a lot of wear. After removing the rear valve cover, I did see some dirt/grime build-up on the #1 spark plug tube seal. So it looks like #1 spark plug seal was leaking a bit of oil into the plug well. But man, I wish there was room like you have in this highlander on the sienna. The lack of room made it an all day affair. Thanks for this video content though!
I absolutely love your videos. I love the long ones the most. Thanks for sharing
Haven't finished watching ,but at about 1:04:50 when you tightened down the airbox, your 10mm socket got left behind. Hopefully you picked it back up... just didn't want to forget to let you know if you didn't.
nice camera angle good job Ray🎉
I wanted to express my gratitude for the two videos you made. I learned a lot from watching them over and over again, and the comedy was priceless. Thank you again, it really helped me in my process of changing the valve cover gaskets for the front and rear of my 2GR-FE engine, as well as my spark plugs. I personally didn’t mind the long videos.
I really like the long videos since I'm living in an apartment where I can't work on my car and no garage.
This Ray fella has the patience of a saint. I would have wanted to tell off the folks who designed those covers, halfway in.
As usual I did enjoy this video and I will see you on the next one keep up the great work
Love your videos and kind of like it better that your videos are longer as we can get to see more of things and gives me more time to be happier away from my problems...
Ray, just a little tip I learned some years ago; cleanup after any job is my least favorite task, so I believe in the old adage of "handle it once". Instead of putting the old parts on a work table that I would have to clean up later, I put old parts directly in the trash can.
Your confusion with that bracket is how many of us shade trees would deal with every bolt we need to replace. I said it before, but was "told by an expert in the comments" that it's not that hard. I appreciate your positivity.
Just a quick happy Christmas to you and the family Ray. Have a great time (and hopefully some time off)
Not much to add that has not already been said, but echo all those compliments on your work ethics and video creation. Your channel is pretty much my exclusive for this type. Just not the same watching others. You are "da man" as they used to say. Thanks for entertaining and informative videos in this field.
Doctor Ray, the Motor Vehicle Surgeon! If he can't cure what ails your car, no one can!
It amazes me that a little gasket/O ring could cause that much oil pressure drop
I wonder about running the VVT oil supply threw the valve cover Merry Christmas to all
5:10 all those gouges from the corner of the scraper
YAY! An hour and a half video!!! Love those!
Cool, so the owner knew what was needed to solve the VVT problem when they asked for new valve cover gaskets, they just didn't tell Ray but he figured it out for himself. If they'd said why it might have saved him checking some other bits but it's likely he might have checked them anyway.
Grew up in the Sesame Street days, my kids loved watching it
1:04:38 Looks like you left a gift for your customer. A nice shiny 10mm socket!
Talk about doing this the hardest way possible. The 2gr-fe can be a bit of a bear. When you build and rebuild them like I do, you get super familiar with them. Next time use assembly grease on the spark plug tube gaskets. Makes them slide on like butter. Hope that helps
I enjoy your videos very much. You are so patient with difficult repairs. I love Toyotas and have owned 4. Three of them have been front wheel drive and all have been 4 cylinder engines precisely to avoid all the issues you had with this V6. You and your family have a Merry Christmas and be blessed.
I agree, stick with the 4 cylinder
The 4cyl 1.8 has timing chain issues as well @@brucekellett2269
Absolutely. Transverse mounted V6s are for masochists. I’m really glad I live in Ireland, where adequate is an acceptable performance level, so shoehorned big engines in small bays are not a feature of our lives, at least, not on a daily basis.
This is why I actually like the change from V6 to I4 turbo. V6s are too complicated and not good at all in a transverse configuration.
You guys make me laugh the 2gr-fe is better then a 4 cly Camry by a landslide. No oil burning issues and no turbo to go bad. It’s one of the best for a reason
4th! Good Thursday morning Ray and the wife unit! Along with the new employees! Roger in Pierre South Dakota
The man as usual! Great mechanic.
When I was a young buck, my grandfather taught me when doing an oil change to drain the oil filter and oil. Put the oil plug and old filter back in. Fill the engine with diesel fuel and let it set for 2 hours. Remove and save diesel fuel for the next oil change. Replace filter, plug, and refill oil to proper level.
This will keep sludge out of the engine and keep it clean.
Hmm, similar effect with transmission fluid? Guess diesel is slightly cheaper
YAY!!! FINALLY some Brake Clean sounds!! (not perfectly synced, but beggars can't be choosers! Cheers Brother!
I think you are a genius mr. Ray
Just a tip on getting spark plug seals to go on easy! Lube up the seals before install. And use a little grease on those orings to ensure they don't fall off. Great video
There...'ya said it...."The Ethics" @ 43:45min "yer a blessid soul Ray
Thank God I am off work for the rest of the year. That way I will have time to watch this one and part one.
Just a thought, i belive on the transverse mounted 6 cylinder engines you must pull the intake manifold and cawl off the car to get at the back spark plugs valve cover and coils and plugs its advisable to change the back bank of coils, saving the old ones for use on the frt side of the motor. In labor cost i belive your money ahead to change them any time you do plugs on the back bank. A modren plug set can last 100k or more miles coils have about the same life span, but even if they last longer you will always have 3 spair ones to use on the frt side of the motor where its very little work to get to them.
I agree, replace all three coils on the rear bank for high mileage 2GR-FE's if you're taking all that time to remove the intake and cowling. Cylinder 5 coil on the rear bank of my 2009 Sienna went out at 205k miles. I replaced all three coils and saved the other two that were still working (cylinder 1 and 3) as extras if (when) one of the front bank coils goes out. I dreaded all that time of having to go back in if cylinder 1 or 3 coil went out. Unfortunately, the Toyota OEM coils are $89 each.
How you remember where all the nuts and bolts go is amazing 👏
I taught my nephew the poke holes on cardboard and arranged them as you take them off...
Plus, nowadays phones came a long way to take pictures and videos... Try that with a flip phone in the early 2000s😅 still worked ok, not as detailed
To Lauren Ray and family wishing you a happy Christmas and a happy New year thank you for all the fantastic video 🎉🎉❤
Happy Christmas Ray to you your wife and your children 🇬🇧
I hung through this two part video job to get some pointers from a skilled mechanic on this engine and to see the connector hacks. For DIY or anyone, really, consider replacing the coolant bypass hose. Its under the intake manifold. Removing just 6 more bolts gives access to that hose. Its really hard to detect when that one starts leaking. I just completed that on a 2007 Camry. I also had to replace the hard pipe, which incidentally can only come out by removing the water outlet off the back of the engine.
Also my big lesson learned was DO NOT tighten ANY of the plenum bolts/nuts until you get those back bolts on the two back brackets started
Just did this on an 09 Lexus ES350 with the same seal kit, hoping to quiet the startup rattle. It took several hours to get the back bank. I put a little silicon brake grease on the spark plug seals and wells, and they aligned and slid in easy without any prodding.
Love that zip tie to hold the broken spark plug clips. Need to try that.
Lauren shaking her head with a defensive posture as she walks away in disbelief of said Jeep. 😆
JeeeZuz Ray ...
I used ta compliment me-self as to the complexities of a job that was so dang intricate that I used to think nutin of a intake manifold gasket removal & replacement ..

There's no Damn way I'll EVEN approach such a thing that id have to do even for myself
Nowadays..
Ya see im retired 36 Yrs worth of doing work that am glad to be finished with .. No not in the car repair business in any way .
I'm just a weekend mechanic although in my teens through my late twenties o was working on rebuilding transmissions & engines ..
Back in those days it was all simple .. a lot of old smog designs were simplistic. Catalytic converters were just plain looking mufflers easy install & removal ..
But now jeez ain't no way I'd find myself under a maze like you have here with this Toyota..
The only way I Would is I'd have no choice & there was no one to help me out in such an endeavor..
This computer controlled everything in any vehicle IS Rediculous.
That a Stinking computer finds an error in any part of an engine or transmission or any other part it CONTROLS is just stupidity
An is yet ANOTHER reason car repairs ( parts ) are just so dang expensive..
The mechanic is never paid properly by the dealer period.
I dont care IF there unionized or not ..
The responsibility falls on the last person who touched the vehicle in an attempt to fix the Darn Thang..
Thats why Mechanics of old were either straight up or crooked guys ..
You RAY are straight up & a continuance of a long tradition of Great DEPENDABLE Mechanics..
I seriously hope that Toyota passed all the DRIVE testing you had to do to cancel out those codes that were popping up keeping it from running properly.
Yeah this job was a major pain that I could see.
Again my Hats off to you RAY .
Only wish you weren't on the wrong side of the country ..
An I'm not Fond of Hurricanes so there's no way for me to even consider moving out yonder whar YEW are ..
So I'll be content to watch your videos 😊
Do have a very good HOLY-DAY .. & New Year 🎉🎉
Even though your post was long, thank you for separating it up a bit with the return button 😅
Do you have any younger relatives that wish to learn about these things? They can come over and you give them instructions/supervision...
When I started in the early 1990s I did so just to save money for other things 😅
Library and Haynes or Chilton manuals were my go-to before the Internet started to grow by the late 1990s😅
Nowadays with RUclips everyone can learn a little something here and there and I saved so much over the years with "RUclips University" when it comes to home and auto repairs 😅
@ricebike Honestly buddy ... I dont Need except maybe what you've suggested as far as information sources yes I'll dew that but to be honest in life Without GOD you have nothing. So my source ror ALL Things comes from him ..
You'd do good to learn this as well in your young age .. thank you for your reply. I hope I haven't upset you with my beliefs but they are mine & I know for myself that it works. Trust in GOD & all will will be fine no matter the end results

Hi Ray and wife unit just finished watching videos you’re genius mechanic knowing where all parts are and remember it and as always you and you’re families be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Happy Holidays right back at you, Ray. Hope Santa brings you something nice.
Thanks for helping keep me sane, or at least less insane, over the last year.
I’m really hoping to get back In harness , albeit on a smaller and slower level than before, sometime in the next month. I have one customer who has been waiting an entire year and refuses to let anyone else touch his car, so that’s going to be first up. I don’t even remember what it came in for, but a nice, well cared for, E34 520i will be seeing the light of day for the first time in over a year, all going well.
I’ll probably end up missing an episode, here and there, once I’m working again, but I’m going to try to stay up to date. Especially want to see what happens with the Jeep and I’d love to see the tow truck finished. You call that something else, I know, but my American words have become misfiled and I can’t remember, now. I’m sure you know what a tow truck is…
Gotta love the plastic oil filter housings ! Especially when they are tiiiggghhhttttt
My Christmas gift come thru. This video will come in handy when my Rav4 2GR-FE needs repair. Merry Christmas to you and thank you.
I have broken a couple of those oil caps. They are in stock in most part stores. That tells me I'm not only guy to do that.
Next you should recommend a wiring harness for those plugs and I hope that little piece of sealant that fell into the backside of the engine wont be a problem.
@24:21 I yelled "What about the screen that stayed in the valve cover??" Love your videos. You have me addicted to them!! Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!
We have a 2015 Toyota Highlander with the 3.5L engine. I have changed the spark plugs, but that was it. This would be challenging, but after watching both of these videos for this job, i would be confident in doing this job. You are right about that oil filter housing. Someone put way too much torque on that. Probably a quick lube shop.
Reeeeeeeeee, you can't do that! Nice job Ray, merry Christmas to you and your family.
I like the longer videos!!
The gaskets are blue so you know they are good!😊
Ray the purpose of the vacuum line on a Toyota engine mount is basically as follows
The engine mount contains hydraulic oil that supports the engine but the hydraulic oil is then supported inturn by a diaphram that has the hydraulic oil on one side and vacuum on the other, the vacuum is controlled by a swithcing valve that changes the vacuum supplied depending on engine requirements to change the dampening characteristics and hence dampen out different frequency vibrations as required.
Wen I was stil at the factory assembling , I had a special tool to put those sealings in, they had the form of the sealing to prevent damage, always a hard time to get them out as well, the screw driver the perfect tool.
Bit of a hack for keeping gaskets from falling out, maybe use 'skin tac'. It's normally used in a health care setting, but it's a swab with a strong adhesive that wipes on extremely thin. Certainly thin enough to not affect fit.
To be honest i like the longer Videos!
Ray there are some inspection mirrors with a light made on them and they're available at Ali Express for 3-4$. Maybe one of the other tool suppliers have something similar.
Great work . Just put a throttle body on a 2013 VW Jeta . Works like new . Pluse an oil change . Engine light off , good now .
THanks Ray I enjoyed these parts on a 2GRFE engine, have the same engine in my Toyota Aurion Presara here in Australia and have always dreaded the rear plug change grrr so seeing you struggle convinced me to get my great mechanic to do them 😁😁

There's a common thread that's not given kudos in these video's comments and that's the ability to get totally involved with a lengthy project that REALLY LENGTHY, as in lets take apart half the damn car. And it's my problem (my complaint) when working on my car and it's having to disassemble so damn much. Not just taking off a radiator cap but removing the entire front grill and supports... Eric does it; Ivan does it; Ray does it; Wes does it. And nobody seems pissed about it like I get. And keeping track of all the parts is daunting (to me!!👎😫)
Good job guys
A Merry Christmas to you and your family Ray ! Thanks for all the great videos. I've learned a lot from you and I'm 68 years old !
No worries, I like the long videos
Would it be a bad idea to apply a thin layer of oil or dialectric grease to the spark plug seals to aid them in just slipping on on their own? I feel like that would be easier than trying to work them on with the pocket driver
The wire on the windshield I believe is for rain sensing wipers or radio antenna.
Good morning Ray!
Merry Christmas to you and your family! Hope you all have a fantastic Christmas!
Good morning Mr Ray hope y'all have a great day 😁
Would be nice if you tacked on some bonus video after confirming the original problem was in fact solved.
