RAY!!! Europe Twirly!!!
Please pin this. I had trouble finding it again!
@@emmettturner9452 pinned! And oops I thought I pinned it already
He doesn’t know what he’s doing but he did sleep at a Holiday inn last njght
Hey ray do you ever useberrymans b12 cleaner? it’s awesome on dissovlving build of all kinds
Hi Ray, “clean as a whistle” comes from the age of steam rail engines. The train’s whistles were steam powered and essentially received a steam cleaning every time they were blown.
The same as...The real McCoy...was an automatic oilier on steam trains invented by a slave.
Wow, I always wondered where that saying came from. I'm 60 and never knew 😊 thank you for the little history lesson ❤
just what I was going to say.
A "whistle" is also a euphemism for a male organ, I know mine is always clean. 😂
@@johnt.848 Hope you don't use steam to clean it!
One of the best sayings I’ve ever heard was “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room”.
Always be learning.
More hybrids Ray.
It will be the norm.
🙂 Ray, when you said, "I do not know what I'm doing," I immediately said to myself, "That's like a highly skilled surgeon saying he doesn't know what he's doing while expertly setting a broken bone."
You may not have done that particular job on that particular make, but you definitely have the skills required. 🙂
Exactly.
When Ray was swirling that tube around it looked like he was doing laparoscopic surgery.
A safety hint Ray. No matter what your using as a medium-- always wear a mask. Cloth is OK for walnut blast but for those doing bead or sand blast a real respirator. You all are young but still don't breath in this stuff.
if he can breathe in Brake clean, he can handle walnuts.
@@forgetfulme1719 wouldn't surprise me if breathing in that stuff caused some of his lung issues he had
@@forgetfulme1719 ah, no. the walnut is a solid and there is some dust in it. that dust gets deep into your lungs and can get stuck and cause damage. also, if you read the can, it tells you to not breath in the brake clean.
@@Racingnut24 reckless Ray thinks he is invincible, many things he knows but not doing
@@Racingnut24 many things he knows but too lazy to follow
When I started in the Machining field 30 years ago, one of the senior Machinists(William King RIP 🙏) used to work in the railroad repair industry as well as his Father doing Steam engine repair before him. He used to always use that phrase. When I questioned him about it, he stated his father used the term to make note of how clean the steam whistles were internally when they took them off for restoration. His Dad used to say he never had to clean or re machine any steam whistles internally. He only ever had to regrind or polish the outside because the inside was steam cleaned its entire life. Henc, the "clean as a whistle" ! This was a bit of knowledge he handed down, but man, he had an absolutely limitless amount of machining knowledge. Most of which I still use today. I miss picking his brain and think about him on the regular. Now I'm the old guy and I try my damndest to share knowledge I've learned, but I'll never be as versed as he was about machining and being a all around decent person.
I have had a couple of direct injection engines and having the walnut service is a must.
Younare one of the few……..most people with those types of engines(Hyundai/Kia) don’t think about it, and the dealers/manufacturers will not offer that info….. my brother learned the hard way, and is now driving a toyota……
Love that walnut blasting machine.
Take the 5 minutes and remove the wipers and cowling. It opens the whole engine bay and makes life soooo much easier. Also, the EGR cooler is likely completely clogged making the valve replacement moot.
Ha! Just watched the Bonus Encore and see that indeed did happen later. ;)
I was wondering why he didn't continue to the EGR cooler and beyond to accomplish said goal of clean EGR system.
Watching you do this cleaning with ground up walnut shells jogged my memory of an incident involving using walnut shells for cleaning and the crash of a United States Army Chinook helicopter. This illustrates the use of extreme care in the use of this stuff.
"On 11 September 1982 at an airshow in Mannheim, Germany, a U.S. Army Chinook (serial number 74-22292) carrying parachutists crashed, killing 46 people. The crash was later found to have been caused by an accumulation of ground walnut shell grit used for cleaning machinery, which blocked lubrication from reaching transmission bearings. The accident resulted in the eventual discontinuation of the use of walnut grit as a cleaning agent."
yep, use CO2
@@forgetfulme1719do you mean dry ice?
@@michaelpressman7203 yes, they use liquified Carbon dioxide, dry ice is solid form ?
@@forgetfulme1719 It is solid CO2 pellets propelled with air or nitrogen depending on the application.
@@forgetfulme1719 Yes, I think CO2 blasting would be much more suitable in that application. Looks like Ray was pretty careful to blow all the walnut husks out of the intake passages.
Toyota is the undisputed world leader in hybrid engines. They will delay the transition into any other technology as long as they can, however they can.
Toyota is smart enough to not pull all their eggs in one basket (i.e. the one-sized-fits-all EV strategy doomed to fail).
But Toyota is also dumb enough they havent be able to fix the gage cluster on my buddies 2023 corolla over 5 times and still cant fix it. Been 3 months and they cant even find a replacement car
@@nissan300zttThat is a dealership issue you are talking about. We are talking about the R&D side of Toyota.
@@mart43 The R&D side of Toyota is just as dumb as all the other manufactures. You're only fooling yourself if you think they aren't. How soon you all forgot about the floor mat issue they had and many others.
No matter how ill advised. Operating a hybrid vehicle is like trying to be half pregnant. You're fooling yourself. Go with a gasser or an EV, either way, you are back in Realityland.
I'm glad Ray gets down to the granular level at his auto clinic. He is the mad scientist who teaches us all. Tips and Tricks included. Have an awesome day.
Nicely done Ray!
Terrific learning video. Thank you!
YES!!!!! Been waiting for this type of video.
another great tool for your shop ,excellent
The walnut blasting was great done a fine job Ray.
Morning Ray, so glad you have the walnut cleaner, have been watching other shops on U-tube shows and always impressed by the results.
Morning Ray! Hope you enjoy your day and don’t work too hard
Hey Ray. That new machine is fantastic! Nice work. Looks like a great job to do too 😊
Good morning Ray 🌄 you certainly entertain my brother and educate great job bro 😎👍👍
Thank you for all the long hours of editing 🎉
Impressive speed and quality. Very handy tool.
You are one heck of a mechanic 👍😎
And this is why I enjoy watching your video's. always learning something new from you or getting a refresh reminder of something old. Walnut blasting isn't new but rarely done, at least in my area. Great video as always, cheers :)
Good Job! Real Mechanic!
You are a well informed and well rounded individual, I like your approach to problem solving.
I save time watching his videos. I watch him take things apart and then watch it in reverse, saves a ton of time.🎉
Put a clear hose on that walnut blaster and you’ll be getting somewhere. That thing is awesome.
Hi Ray wife unit and boys just finished video with Prius day later it was excellent and as always you all be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
That was a good demonstration of walnut blasting cleaning. A very nice close up inside. I love it.
Ray, you videos are so much better since you have your own shop!
Cool process
Amen for Snap-On tools. worked on cars since I was 16. Taught for 26 years and retired. Love my Snap-Ons.
@rainmanraysrepairs I and I'm sure many others would appreciate you doing a live with primary topic of conversation and your thoughts about how you do business compared to the rest of shops after all you've lived the life of a mechanic at dealership, retail store, and now as a owner yourself
great idea never heard of this process i am 72 and still learning with you. I've done vehicle industrial ,mining , and millwright mechanic in my life and surprising still learning things watching you.
I completely agree about the all electric cars
Most of us like to hear you geek out on stuff. I think most of us do it to but it’s hard to find like minded folks these days. Learning and pondering the wonders of life is enjoyable. Bravo sir.
Just wow, talk about the right tool for the job.
From such humble beginnings Ray did you ever think you would be walnut blasting an engine intake?????
Another great video 👍👍👍
Brian started using this setup about a year ago if i recall correctly. Works very well with the 3.5 Ecoboost.
Nice work
I don't see a problem with the walnut blaster. Especially with how thoroughly Ray cleaned the intake when he finished.
We used walnut shells blasted into the engines of our jets in the USAF when they were on the test stands for maintenance. Excellent cleaning medium 👍
I have been following you for several years; I really enjoy your content. I agree 💯 with you about the EV propaganda, it takes a tremendous amount of diesel just to haul the minerals to be prossessed into the batteries.
Ray is really feeling good again
R2D2 made short work of those intake runners, verry impressive how well that machine works. Verry good video Ray🤘🤘
Those walnuts shells did a really nice job.
Thanks for showing us R2! I've never seen anyone actually do a walnut blasting procedure before. Can't wait to see you use it on a really crudded up GDI engine!
Yeah, now I want to see Threepio. 🤣
It is good to see there are walnut blasting solutions for the DIY market , but the commenter is correct, the process can cause issues if not done with care. Your videos help instill that knowledge!
thank you
Great video
You rock, Ray! I'm just commenting for the algorithm.
Welcoming back!
I had never seen a walnut blasting. I've seen the results but never the actual procedure. I think it is very effective...Great video!
Been around since the days of carbonators. I'm sure nobody every imagined they'd make a comeback 😂
1982, I was on the B1-B Program in Palmdale ca. next door was Northrup and they were building the B-2, Northrup had announced a new way they developed a method to strip the paint off of the composite skins with walnuts ground up fine. Just a friendly FYI
That walnut blaster is really great. I remember seeing it on CSI NY where NYC Parks Dept used it to clean statues instead of sand blasting. It was really efficient in cleaning the intakes. Best of luck with your new favorite tool. And the ratchet is really a plus for those who work close quarters as well.
My Best to You, Wife Unit and the rest of the clan too.
A train whistle is a clean clear sound with no overtones, ergo, clean as a whistle could mean pure, or unblemished. Most trains use two tones that are clear so you can hear from a greater distance.
Train whistles do have overtones. Even a pipe organ pipe has overtones.
I have seen crush walnut used to remove rust from metal due to it will not pit the metal.....but the rust is gone....thanks for another great repair video...
Woo Hoo. Ha ha e a great day Ray and wife unit and co-worker units and of course Luna unit!!
Great job. Intake runner look like new
I think the Walnut Blasting work great
Have you looked into C02 blasting. Uses crushed dry Ice instead of walnut. The dry ice evaporates quickly as C02 gas, so the only thing left behind is the loosened media you cleaned off.
Ray...that is absolutely amazing. I have a turbo GDI engine (EcoBoost) that is notorious for carbon buildup. A local shop that I trust is quoting me something like 8 hours of labor for that same service. The engine is not suffering yet. I am considering this as a DIY project for down the road. The only issue I have is that with a transverse mounted V-6, the far 3 cylinders are most likely a pain to get to. Maybe removing the cowl would do it. So far, Ford has no answer other than induction service that they actually don't recommend for the EcoBoost. The reason is hydrocarbon-based induction services can cause the turbos to overheat and possibly lead to damage.
Good video!
I have two ratchets one is a 3/8 drive and one is a 1/4 drive, they are clutch drive ratchets. I have had the 3/8 drive version approximately 20 years, it has a stamped identification "RADIAN" on the ratchet head. The 1/4 drive version I bought approximately 15 years ago.
She looking clean!
I have a set of offset Matco wrenches and they are sweet , they have saved my butt many times
97th! Good Thursday morning Ray and the new employees! Had my identity stolen and my computer was compromised. Had to have all the issues resolved before I could use it again. Roger in Pierre South Dakota. I’M BACK!
Howdy Roger! Welcome back.
i used a hook scraper to scrape that stuff loose and a vacuum cleaner with a cut-off piece of water hose duct taped in the vacuum tube so I could suck the scraped up carbon out. We got most of it, it is far cleaner than it had been. I love this video.
Make that 4?🤔
With those clips at 7 min 30. If you push them inwards first then push the tab down, they come out really easy. It's counter-intuitive but it works.
I got to get one of them machines 😂. That is so cool
clean as a whistle is thought to be that the sound a whistle makes is a clean sound
FYI people the reason to use walnut shell blasting is if a few injest into the engine they just go through without damage. Now of course you dont want a bunch of them left over but a few doesn't hurt a thing. Awesome new tool for GDI engines. Have yourself a great day Mr Raymond!!
The egr and the PVC are pretty much a normal changed part in the Prius. Its a simple egr, PVC and spark plug replacement since your in there. If you drag your feet it's a 1 hour job
I would have taken a few days off from working on that mustang! Lol Great video as usual! Heading to the other channel now!
We used walnut shells (called Carbo Blast) to clean gas turbine generators. We would fire the turbine at a low rpm then slowly dump a bag of blaster into the air intake. The shells would go through and if it was dark out the exhaust would rain sparks from the burning walnut bits. Rather cool.
I agree with you 100% about the total EV plans. The infrastructure to generate the power required and the transmission capabilities are not there! And your comment about just relocating the pollution generators to another location is also 100% correct! Finely hearing some one else, especially with your ability to educate your listeners is fantastic, thank you. The American president and the Canadian prime minister are both deciples of the wef that has dictated to the people that by 2030 we will all be driving EV’S, It ain’t gunna happen with out a total rebuild of our electrical grid.
That blaster R2D2 system you created is bad ass
Ray it's always good to know which button to press !!!!! 😉
Loved it when Pinkey (or was it Perky?) "forgot to connect the bracket for the dipstick tube"! Hilarious!
It IS...... always the mass air flow sensor!!! I can't count how many times that has got me.
Hey Ray, that was really interesting to watch. Would love to see the blaster at work on an emissions diesel intake. That machine looks like it is very well made. It would be interesting to see the condition of the spend media after the job. Cheers!
a quick mod suggestion, replace the end of R2'S probe with clear tube. that way you can see what your cleaning.
Reminds me of the machine that my doctor used to clean my ears out. Cool!
I did this to an engine inlet on a KC-10 in the Air Force while harnessed to a grounding point and the engine running.
Ray just loves showing off his wobbly bits even when they aren’t needed LOL😂
Great video, what was the fluid in the intake at the beginning?
Hi Ray, try using drink straws taped to the end of the hose to reach the hard-to-reach spots. I have had good results with this method. Robert
Good Day Ray and hi to Dave
Did valve cover gaskets on my 3MZ a few weeks ago, all 6 coil connectors and more crumbled as I breathed looking at them
Wheel falling off happened to me. Fella at Tire Store got mad at me because I could only afford front brakes and needed to wait for a month to afford back brakes (I was a young military guy, no credit) so he angry did the front brakes and never retighten the lugs in the rear. I watched my rear tire pass me going down the road as I came to a screeching stop. You are wise Master!😂
Awesome a long vid 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Walnuts are a great cleaner it looks like . And we pasta aficionados like 'em w/garlic , oil and pesca ( fish...) Job done well....
Im a simple creature. I see a Rainman Ray video, i click the "Like" button.
I click the like button before watching
Pretty sure you're a racoon despite you're username
@@legionofanon Me some too. So I'm even simpler.
I make coffee then…
I search him out every day like south main…pine meadow guy is alright too; but ray is #1. Oh, watch wes work is good too.
Oh yay, you can do walnut blasting now
Put an Oil Catch Can from the PCV to the intake inline will prevent the oil from getting back into the intake.
@12:25 is some for real sage wisdom. well said, hope this man has tons and tons of kids.
The saying was originaly clear as a whistle to show the clarity of a conversation to be clear and clean as the sound of a whistle. Its context changed over time.
Is better to leave the adapter in the vacuum and put air blower in the hole and blow it much easier that way
Well that was interesting prius job would of never thought that'd be possible to walnut blast like that
