Your statement of purpose should have 5 paragraphs. In this video, I discuss contents of those paragraphs with examples.
This is an example of a first paragraph from one of my SOP's:
"During a class as a freshman, my lecturer made a remarkable comment and I quote “it is more important and effective to work towards the prevention of illness than to work actively in trying to cure that illness”. This statement struck me and made such an impact that I decided to join groups (both in college and at home) concerned with raising funds for the less privileged and creating public awareness on prevention of rampant illnesses like HIV/AIDS and malaria. One notable group I belong to is the “All for Christ Youth Initiative” a non-governmental organization (NGO) comprising youths who go out to several rural places to educate the villagers on the importance of washing their hands with soap after using the toilet. As a member of this group, I have been privileged to partake in HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns, talking to young girls like myself on the importance of having a sound education, visitation of orphanages and remand homes. All these have been great experiences for me because I have seen people suffer or die from illnesses that could have been prevented. My goal to become a public health specialist is embedded in the fact that I want to be part of a team that will aim to avert these ills."

I looked up how to write a statement of purpose just 1 month before the graduate school deadlines and I cannot emphasize how much this video helped me during the essay process. I had no idea where to start!! And now 3 months later I got accepted into all my grad schools with awards!! (Top are UCLA and USC!!) Thank you so much Ann! 1) Introduce who your are. Quick anecdote, background, origin.
2) Go into detail. Focus on your academic interest.
3) Plans. Future academic goals in a certain department. Connect interest and goals. Mention a specific course and professors.
4) Long-term goals. Big dreams, big goals, big ambitions.
5) Anticipatory things. Praise a program, a school, a city, a community, etc.
Personally I think the Statement of Purpose must be abolished because it is a waste of time for Graduate applications.
Coming from Ghana I suggest that US Colleges and Universities lower their requirements for Masters Programmes.
On the lowdown,I will beseech Admission Committees to be real and admit their Racism that they place in front of Graduate systems.
It seems in America Immigrants are never totally seen as Full US Citizens.
I am a firm believer that GPAs and grades should be the main criteria to accept or Reject students they seek to Accept.
Since the 1970s I see that institutional racism is alive or well within the US Education system.
Cette situation doit etre totalement evoluez.Never before has Racism been so described within our Western Systems.
Even Top Top Programmes like NASA and other entities brim with Racists.
I sincerely hope that people reading this thesis will respond to my Query and system,

I had to come back to this video and thank you! At the time I was writing my statement of purpose, which was back in January of this year, I faced terrible imposter syndrome. I thought whatever I wrote would not be good enough. After putting my best foot forward and watching this video, I made it to the interview and got accepted into the program of my dreams! 1- Intro, who you are what inspires you? What motivates you? And experience? Connect who you are to your course of study? Demographics and whom you serve with the intended course of study?
2- Into detail about academic and technical interest? And why you’re interested in this field? (Research your PROGRAM)
3- Connect your interest to your FUTURE ACADEMIC goals! Include prospective Professors! A+ for Apple teacher’s pet! Shows your sincerity.
4- Connect to your short- and long-term goals after you graduate! Where does this profession lead you! BIG like MIGOS big! BIGGER!
5- Conclude- Anticipation- I look forward to admission etc.

Count me in as another person who benefited immensely from this video Ann, thank you! The five paragraph structure was an excellent foundation to frame my ideas. I diverged then came back to it in the end. My second paragraph had to become two because of two previous careers to write about, but it all connected and came full circle. Yes, I got in!!

Hello! I'm in my second year of applying to MFAs in Creative Writing. I didn't get in anywhere the first time around. I found out about the existence of the degree only a month before the deadlines. This year though, I'm armed with a year's worth of research and my test scores, so hopefully it goes well (fingers crossed)!
