Hi Anne! Thank you so much for this guidance. It really took LOADS of stress off the task of asking for reference letters. Such great advice, especially for those asking for repeat reference letters and it means WAY MORE coming from a Professor herself.

  • @swicheroo1

I think it's really nice to ask for letters in person. It's also important to be able to recognize that some letters have greater weight; for example, when I applied to grad school, I approached a lecturer who had just gotten her PhD from the department but even she was appalled at the mis-step and told me to look toward major scholars in my heavy-hitter department. 'My word means nothing.' As someone who ultimately came to be a TT professor myself, I'd find it weird if a student gave me a drafted letter. It's not ever happened. But maybe I'd feel totally happy, too. FWIW: My advisor for the doctorate, a major scholar in my field, was the only person who gave me the opportunity to write my own letter. I gave it a sporting try, but it was horrible. I just didn't understand the form. And she basically told me that it was a terrible letter and she would draft everything from scratch.

Michael Inioluwa Oladele I can relate to this. Here is what you can do; start now to reach out to like 3/4 of them through calls or email to just say Hi & seek advice for your professional growth. Once you develop rapport, tell them of your intentions to apply for graduate studies abroad even before you start; some of them will encourage you to pursue that. Then, inform them of your intention to add them as referees before you start your applications. Get their consent first. Also try to develop rapport with your CDS/NYSC coordinators, they can also write references for you.

    • @annondemand6607

This is a very good question! You should tell the two references the truth, that you didn't use them and explain why you still asked them. Tell them you are trying to be proactive and would still like them to save the reference for future use. Any good professor/lecturer will understand. Just make sure your correspondence is drafted with much gratitude and wisdom.
