Institution I am applying to has asked for just statement without specifying whether it is an personal statement or statement of purpose. What I've done so far is do a combination of the two in one statement.

The instructions say, “you are required to submit a personal statement that can be up to 1000 words in length(approximately 2 pages…” The way I read the instructions, it is okay to go over two pages. What is your interpretation? I am asking because of your previous line of work.

Often times, when I email program coordinator, they always reply that it's not needed to contact potential supervisors before applying as first-year would be lab rotations. What would you advice me on this, should I contact potential supervisors or not? Thank you so much!
Different programs have different requirements. Some will state it explicitly that you need to contact an advisor before/during your application. Some programs don't. Just go through the program website diligently for this information. If it's still not clear, mail the graduate program coordinator
