Love this video!! Thank you so much. Could you please do one on writing a killer resume? I remember you mentioned in one of your previous videos how important it is to compose your resume in a way that demonstrates your skills and why you’ll be a great addition to the school. Thank you in advance.
Hi Philippe, could you please tell us a few ways we can identify whether the university is asking for a Statement of Purpose or a Personal Statement as everywhere I apply they mention to upload a Personal Statement but no where do they mention about the Statement of Purpose
If they don't mention the terms statement of purpose, then the personal statement should fulfill the same function as the SOP. Please ensure that you follow the prompts and guidelines provided by the school.
Thanks for this explanatory video! What if the university wants only a personal statement but not a statement of purpose? And the character limitation is 3000.
@@TheAdmitLab this is what they have written on their website: "A personal letter in which you explain why you are applying to the position and reflect on the progress which you consider can be traced in your degree projects. If it is evident from the certificates that it took you a very long time to complete the degree projects, you may wish to comment on this fact. This text may not exceed 3,000 characters (including blank spaces)."
Hi Dr. Barr, thank you for all these tips and insights, I have applied some of them and have received positive feedback from my SOP reviewers. Please what is your recommendation for the structure and specific content when applying to two or more programs with the same SOP? Here's what I mean; say a school allows for the selection of two programs on one application but only one SOP is required, how do you tailor the SOP content to reflect strong interest in both programs? Do you speak generally/broadly to cover for both programs or do you dedicate a paragraph each for both?
@@TheAdmitLab So, there's a first choice program and second choice program options. Can be from same school or different schools. For example, programs in Agric&Bio Engineering and Chemical Engineering from same School of Engineering or Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from different schools(Natural Sciences and Engineering, respectively). And yes, multiple documents can be uploaded into the SOP section of the application but the application instruction reads one SOP for both.
@@franklinosibie4861 If there is not limitations on length, I would connect your intention to each program in two separate paragraphs. You can probably edit this to fit on one page. I would expect admissions committees to have different expectations for one SOP instead of two:)
@@TheAdmitLab Thanks. The length is max of 2 pages. And yes, I can fit in separate paragraphs for each program and still not exceed 2 pages. Please, can you explain what you mean by the last sentence in your last reply?
@@franklinosibie4861 Ah! I just meant that if the admission committees had been asking for one page for 2 programs, there wouldn"t have been enough space to be thorough and they would have expected just a brief justification. But that's not the case. You should have plenty of space to tackly both programs in 2 pages.

Thanks for the suggestion. On it!

Hello, Dr. Barr! Thanks for you amazing content. Do you think it’s important to include a heading in the SOP? If so, what’s the best way to format it?
Thanks! No need for a heading. Plain text should do it!

If they only use the term personal statement, it might mean "statement of purpose".

Yes, this would fit under the SOP category. I suggest keeping the "personal" elements to the minimum.

This seems a litte odd to me. Is there a way to add another documents to the application? Are these programs within the same department/school?
