      Elden Ring - it’s almost like people have various tastes for what kind of difficulty they find enjoyable.
      Wouldn’t it be crazy if like someone came up with an option or something you could select from the game’s menu that you could tune the difficulty to your preference. Wild idea I know.

    Does "indie" mean something different in gaming than elsewhere? I would think that if a game is being funded and published by Square-Enix - one of the most prominent companies in gaming - then it is by definition _not_ an indie title, no matter what size game it is.

      Dave the Diver winning "Best Indie Game" shows that, for a lot of people, a game being "indie" is more about having an "independent spirit", experimenting with gameplay outside of AAA gamedev norms, and less about how a game is actually published. I'll say this... I went through the DLC pretty easily. However, I've been playing these type of games since Dark Souls 1 and I have to say that this DLC is rough. I really believe it's challenging even for the most experienced players. The bosses in the DLC do have openings but they're very limited and I can understand that being a critique of the game feeling gimmicky rather than an actual fight. With the success of Elden Ring, it really brought a more wide scale audience introducing more casual like players who are new to the Souls-like genre who just want to experience the hype behind it. I honestly think that's why the reviews are mixed... because we have an actual mixture of newborn Souls-like players saying it's too hard, and veterans scratching their heads going like "this might be a bit TOO much".

    • @Spaaardaaa
      @Spaaardaaa 4 месяца назад +16

      I'm also a veteran and I mostly agree with this view. It's not that the DLC is too hard, it's just the the power scaling is off. You don't add more challenge to the game buy nerfing the player's damage as well as his health (effectively). Soulsborne games should always feel hard, but fair (the best example of this is Sekiro). Adding the power scaling might artificially inflate the playtime a bit by forcing players to explore to get scadutree fragments in order to get their damage potential back, but other than that it adds nothing but frustration because you have to spend 80% dodging and 20% of the time dealing a pathetic amount of damage to the boss. Boss fights suddenly feel like a choir and each mistake is overly punished, especially when you just start learning the boss' moves.

      My opinion on the difficulty is in some spots it’s too much with how the windows to deal damage were. The difficulty in Elden Ring in 1 on 1 boss fights is unlike much else I've experienced in the series and I've played literally every fromsoft souls game and sekiro as well. Boss aggression is cranked to the moon with openings so tiny that strength builds just aren't even viable in the first place. I'm just not sure why people are only just reviewing ER poorly now because of it it because it was certainly present in the base game especially once you got to Farum Azula.
      Really not a fan of the direction FromSoft took their bosses in this title although I think they've done a good job adapting the games to the open world outside of that.

    • @onylra6265
      @onylra6265 4 месяца назад +6

      It's the wrong type of 'difficulty'. It went from 'get good' to 'get an arbitrary number of collectibles to have a fair chance'. It's not good design - From acting like they're getting paid for every time someone dies like it's a coin-op arcade game - it doesn't resemble the original games at all. It's not a skill check, it's a stat check. Elden ring was like this, but the DLC amped it up to 11, and it stopped being fun for a lot of us.
      Fromsoft got high on its own supply, and turned the dial from fun to infuriating - this shit isn't my job and I'm not a masochist - I get a few few hours a week to do this shit and I ain't trying to spend it making ZERO progress because I haven't optimised some opaque spreadsheet. I repeat: this is not my job. My job is what I do to buy this game to have fun. It isn't fun, I honestly haven't been this pissed off at a game since Wonderboy in the arcade - if your game makes me think about Wonderboy then you might have gone too far.

    The Elden Ring situations actually reminds me of a controversy that's been largely forgotten with DOOM Eternal. At release, "The Ancients Gods Pt 1", the first DLC, was largely criticized for it's difficulty.
    What happened is that, we had a very vocal but also very small part of the fandom who was really deep into that game. RUclipsrs making videos about the combat and so on, people who by default, played the game on max difficulty and conquered all of the toughest challenges of that game, who were left wanting more. And Id Software listened to these people, especially.
    Ancient Gods Part 1, turned everything to 11. It bragged about doing so, too, it was very clear who Id Software wanted to appeal to. The people who complained about the Marauder? Well, now there's two of them at the same time! The super aggressive quick switching style of play became a must. And those players, were happy.
    However, they were not really the majority. For a ton of people, myself included even though I was used to the max difficulty, this DLC was absolutely exhausting to play. With relentless enemies constantly pushing toward you, arenas with enemy composition that sometimes bordered on being cruel, every fight felt like a test of your abilities and worse, it had this constant thing : "You thought it was over? Here's more." which can be exhilarating when done right, but it was just too much here.
    It felt Id Software doubling down on everything that made the game great, but also all of the things that made some people give up on it.
    When the second DLC was released, it came with a patch that revamped the first one. Some called it an over-correction. Some even said that the second DLC was an over-correction. I played the second DLC but didn't enjoy it, I feel like something broke with my experience of the first DLC and I haven't been able to enjoy the game at all ever since.
    But still, if I try to understand, I honestly can see both sides here. Some people saw it as a step in the right direction, some people saw it as a massive over-correction. It all resulted from something that maybe, shouldn't have happened in the first place.
    Knowing which people to listen to in your game's community is a tricky thing to do, it's easy to let yourself believe that a vocal minority actually represents a majority of your player-base.

    16:55 SMT V Vengeance actually sold 500k copies in the first three days, with the 1.6 million number being their first week sales. I imagine a large portion of the sales of this game were off the switch, as SMT V's first outing back in 2021 had much lower sales figures, and I can't imagine switch copies alone attributing to 1.1 mil in sales after a week

    Honestly the part I think I agree with the most about the complaints about Erdtree is just that some enemies feel like damage sponges for no particularly great reason, to the point I end up running past a bunch of them rather than deal with it. The thing is though, that was also present in the base game, and in the case of the bosses, I feel like the extra health largely replaces bosses whose health bars you drain only for them to completely refill in their phase 2, which I think FromSoft has gone a bit overboard with the last while.

    The thing I learned about Erdtree difficulty is this:
    You need to retool your build and weapons to make sense of the new dynamics. The thing about the base game is that you can sleepwalk through the back half of the game once you’ve sorted out your build and weapon set. Erdtree aims to undo that, and it’s great. I came in with a pretty typical bleed build and though I was able to maintain that, I had to branch out and use new weapon arts and update how I approach situations. Now in at the end and I’m just kinda sleepwalking through most things again. But the difficulty curve was welcome while it lasted.

    The DLC area is not scale with ng+
    Here's some tips if its too hard:
    Shield with barricade, collosal weapons, or AOW that knock down enemies (giant hunt, lion claw, etc), are your best friends for exploration, you can stunlock every npc battle (the solitude knight)
    Furnace giant is doable with torrent, just focus your build to dmg (scorpion talisman, mounted combat talisman, etc).
    You can bleed the dancing lion, and try fighting it with lock off and on, because the camera is wonky.
    You can bleed Rellana, and use lighting is good since there's a water pond and sometimes rain in the arena, dont fight her with magic or fire unless you're a god gamer. You can fight Rellana "sekiro style" with guard tear, the perfect block will negate the dmg, and guard counter dmg is increased.
    You can get i think 5 scadu fragment in the first area before the boss.
    Just use summons bro, there's nothing wrong with that, you will get more bs weapon with bs move later on.
    And the last thing is perseverance.

      There is a lot wrong with using summons. Summons break the gameplay loop that many of us have come to love from the genre. Hitting a boss on their back while your clone tanks all the damage simply isn't as satisfying for most of us. I couldn't care less about other people using them to beat the game, that doesn't devalue my own experience, but when the bosses are so overtuned that summoning is basically required, that does worsen the game for me and it is a perfectly fair criticism that many people are making.

    My problems are not inherently that the game is difficult, but that the way it is designed to be difficult encourages a rather boring playstyle that goes against the game's philosophy of having so many options. It just makes me wish I was playing Sekiro or Bloodborne instead. My take on Shadow of the Erdtree is that I love it. Its like one of the best dlcs ever. This could be a standalone expansion and I feel like I stole from FromSoft. Though I do feel now a slight "annoyance" to From's design philosophies now. They have been playing an arms race against players with their games. Upping the challenge ante while doing little to meaningfully push their base gameplay. The biggest changes for Elden Ring since Demon's Souls has been jumping, guard counters and customizable weapon arts from Dark Souls 3. I guess I could say that because the Scadutree blessings work as intended because with some levels you start to treat the game like you were as a high level in the base game but enemies stay a threat because the dmg is so high.
    Once you "got gud" at Demon's Souls it was pretty much knowing the dodge timings or just positioning with large boss recovery periods. Well From is still leaning on s to balance their movesets and now that previous single swing from the boss now has a delay to throw you off and roll catch. It has a follow up to roll catch. The boss varies to sometimes not commit to a follow up. It has an aftershock AoE to roll catch. Its the first attack in a 5 string combo from the boss. If you get caught by 1 hit you may very well be hit by the follow ups and on top those attacks hit like a truck with medium armor and high vigor even in the base game. Then on top of that bosses are very aggressive and after you get hit once and try to find a quick sip of estus the boss is likely doing a fast charge to close the distance. Oh and some of those fights that have summon signs in the boss arena? The bosses are so aggressive as soon as you go through the fog gate that you may very well eat a hit trying to summon them. Bayle's fight as an example, Im grateful that Igon was so fucking goated with their VA that I just wanted to summon him. Now that is just a complete dick move. So From is upping the bosses without meaningfully improving player kit. I feel like some From bosses are far more demanding than DMC bosses Ive played because of the kits of the player vs the boss. Hell I feel like From wants to make DMC bosses but want to stick to Souls limitations.
    Im making my way through the dlc pretty well. I thought I was having a hard time but seeing how others have been struggling online I guess Im doing pretty well with like at most 30min to an hour on a boss. Its still like my favorite game these past few years. This is like the best expansion ever. Im just now more so annoyed. A "Miyazaki you hack" (affectionately) because what design of the game is breaking if you make less enemies 1-2 shot you.
    Also I feel like From needs to not be given a pass over their absolutely horrendous lockon/camera they havent even attempted to fix since Demon's Souls. So for From's next game of course Im still excited and will likely play it but I am very wary of the kind of bullshit From will likely throw at me.
    Update: Beat the final boss. Holy shit what a noisy and damn near unfun 2nd phase. The dlc overall is still amazing but that boss killed any enthusiasm I had to replay it. I felt nothing beating that boss. I agree that final boss feels like it was difficulty for difficulty sake in an unfun way. I only hope that was From getting that shit out of their system for their future projects because I dont think I ever want a boss like that again with Dark Souls combat framework.

      I like your criticism but I do think that you're missing some key features (probably because you haven't explored them)
      ER made magic use viable: it went from a buffing system with some shitty spells to a viable tactic in fighting bosses. I don't like this style but it's a viable style that should be acknowledged and used.
      Talismans are more important than ever: the weapons, builds and armor is now shaping after the talismans you set for a build you could do. Like the Alexander's innards is key if you want to use ashes of war effectively, but useless if you're running a frost melee build.

      Most of the time the term is used it's being used incorrectly then

    • @FirstLast-cg2nk
      @FirstLast-cg2nk 4 месяца назад

      Well, the term review bombing is typically used for when a product is getting negative reviews, regardless of actual quality. The people posting the negative reviews are doing so because they can't progress without exploring and improving their Shadow World Blessing, meaning they can't progress without interacting with a mechanic the devs intentionally put into the game to promote exploration. it's like complaining that they can't beat Sekiro without parrying.
      The game is not "Too Hard" if you're actively engaging in a play style that makes the game harder than the devs intended.
      These are the same people who complained about the difficulty of endgame bosses when those bosses were balanced around the idea that that you'd actively be using Spirit Ashes, and they refused to use Spirit Ashes because "that would be cheating". Using anything powerful was "cheating". Everything was "cheating" except a pure strength build, and only when using approved weapons. Approved by who? By them. Gatekeepers trying to police other peoples' fun.
      Well, this time, Miyazaki is not having it. He basically said "F-ck you, you will engage with all aspects of the game or you will not progress", and more power to him. Gatekeepers one and all, bear witness! The would-be gatekeepers who say that you're not "really" beating the game if you use spirit ashes or powerful builds are suffering for their choices and their hubris, and learning that Miyazaki does not, in fact, support them.
      This is likely to clear out a very toxic part of the Souls fanbase, and I'm all for that. The people who try to bully others online for playing the game the way they enjoy instead of "Level One, No Armor, No Weapons, No Hit, No Dodge, Blindfolded, With A Guitar Hero Controller" are an extremely vocal minority and need to be humbled. Whether intentional or not, Miyazaki has humbled them, and they hate that. Thus, it is review bombing because they aren't complaining about the game, they're complaining that Miyazaki does not love them.

    Let me preface this by saying I have beaten Shadows of the Erdtree. The problem I had is that the DLC breaks or ignores certain rules of the base game in order to deliver a lot of its 'difficulty' and a lot of that specifically is targeted at the accessibility the main game gave. Some bosses charge you instantly for high damage, not allowing you any time to set up, cooperator signs are inside of the arena combined with the previous hyper aggressive bosses, and bosses will straight up ignore aggro to continue hammering you, while hitting an aggroed boss will instantly, often in mid attack, switch target to you. Most bosses have super wide area sweeping attacks that make dodging at the very least difficult and bosses now often have ridiculously long attacks chains that don't give you any time to breathe and insanely fast gap closers.
    At this point I've beaten it both solo and using spirit ashes and those particular fights aren't fun, they are just frustrating.

    The thing that kinda annoyed me about the Elden Ring DLC was the fact that all my endgame equipment was rendered useless. I understand the need to gather Scadutree fragments, but I find that I needed to upgrade twice before reaching a point where the difficulty seemed reasonable.
    I also hate the fact that all the shiny new weapons you find in the DLC are basically useless in their base forms until you spend a whole bunch of Smithing Stones to upgrade them. It's a real bummer cause I would find a cool new weapon only to be dissapointed that it does like 1 dmg and I need to hold out until I gather enough mats to upgrade it before giving it a go.

    • @mr.b89
      @mr.b89 4 месяца назад +2

      Find the smithing stone bell bearings and you now have unlimited upgrade mats, with the amount of runes the dlc gives you for helping someone kill a boss it takes almost no time to upgrade a weapon to 24 or 9. My issue is that finding new weapons like the meteoric ore gs is awesome but it scales with arcane, and switching builds entirely is annoying due to the limited nature of larval tears. Armored core does buildcrafting the best though so I wish From would take more notes from itself and streamline the process

    Difficult? I mean the dlc does push a tighter line up of moves with needing to identify roll catch moves and prediction rolls. Some combos are so tight that you can get an immunity window but roll too late to immunity the next attack.
    Playing a faith build I can feel the lack of abusing bleed or unga bunga quality builds using counter thrust damage.
    After looking through my own feelings I point at the world size as the problem. Scadutree fragments are far and few since the map is so huge. You have a half dozen hours or more of searching to do to find your boss prep. For each major boss. Have fun.
    I am mostly having fun but as someone who prefers exploration rather than open world I much prefer the base game to the dlc for looking around. Scadutree has made every corner mandatory as opposed to the original where exploration was just finding new toys and secrets. Now that I have enough fragments (and have redone my build to leave behind Radagon's soreseal) things feel good.

    • @Unf0rget
      @Unf0rget 4 месяца назад

      Might want to read again. I said scadufrags are a problem. The problem is people end up fighting bosses that expect them to have way more fragments than they've found. An item more mandatory than even the seeds for extra flasks since it effects everything you do to a boss.
      This changes the dynamic of exploration where in the base game missing something like an extra flask worth of seeds or some weapon/spell options isn't a huge deal into a necessity to avoid essentially doing a challenge run. Every fragment you miss is making the game harder. With the size of the map its very easy to miss fragments because there's not a lot of consistency with where they are.
      The bosses are balanced around people finding all of the fragments, btw. Its an inverse of past challenge options where the option is active by default and you have to complete a game wide treasure hunt to slowly weaken the effect. Only its even stupider because it makes you do magnitudes less damage to boot.

    The Elden Ring difficulty balancing is kinda weird to me. Usually highly aggressive, long combo enemies have smaller health bars so you don't spend the majority of the fight standing around with your dick in hand, waiting to attack. But this DLC has *very* aggressive, very healthy bosses. I had to switch off from my comfy PvP quality build to a full strength build just to get reasonable damage (with like 17 Scadu Frags).
    Most of my friends (all of whom are experienced FromSoft players) have either had to switch up their build or use Mimic + Summon after getting stonewalled by a boss. We all love the DLC but we don't all love the balancing.

    • @caleb1038

      Challenge isn’t the issue. People keep using that term without delving into specifics. The sandbox in which the insanely aggressive bosses exists is very clunky because there is no parry or rally system as a core part of the players kit. Many of these would be amazing in Bloodborne, Sekiro, or Lies of P because they have the same type of bosses but have those systems mentioned above implemented. And they are very hard. Elden Ring has weird options that can kind of unlock parrys, or weapons that kind of use a rally system, but because it’s not a core part of the sandbox it leaves the sandbox having an identity crisis. Hence why it has swung from too easy to now this. Great game, but From should learn from the Lies of P sandbox since it blended Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and Sekiro in a borderline perfect game. There are boss moves ripped straight out of that game and Wo Long in this DLC, we know where they are benchmarking their boss design from. FromSoftware needs to better execute their vision because the discourse stems directly from everyone not understanding, because it isn’t obvious what the sandbox is supposed to be.

    On Elden Ring difficulty:
    I still absolutely love the game and I welcome the challenge, and I don't think it takes away from the masterpiece the game AND DLC are! That being said, it could be better. The biggest difficulty comes in the form of limited defensive options, and no way to bridge the gap between defense and offense, like in Sekiro, and that's my main criticism. Bosses in Elden Ring (most prominently in the DLC) have the speed and aggression of a Sekiro, but your character is stuck with the Dark Souls 1-3 defensive options.
    The guard counters are really cool, and there's even a cracked tear added in the DLC that basically gives you Sekiro's deflects, however guard counters limit your build options, specially most weapons have terrible block stats (some weapons can't even block while dual wielding), and the cracked tear is just a temporary buff (3 minutes if I'm not mistaken).
    If the cracked tear was actually a talisman for you to have it active at all times and you could block with ANY weapon (or at least the perfect block), it would go a long LONG way in making the combat more enjoyable without needing to change the difficulty of the bosses themselves.
    I envy PC players who will eventually be able to download a mod to add Sekiro's deflects to the game.

    Scadutree is just pronounced shadowtree btw. Since it’s the old English spelling of the word. Don’t know why they can’t just spell it shadow since the title of the expansion goes by that name. Maybe they didn’t want to confuse people? But who knows

    Less to do with performance or difficulty and more to do with it not being that great an experience. Feels like most critics played it for 1-2 hours and wrote a glowing review because they knew not doing so would probably face backlash.

    Just to explain the issue, the base game of Elden Ring was just about the right difficulty wise and if you struggled, there were many mechanics to help with that, also you could skip it and coming back later. It attracted a big audience who enjoyed that difficulty tuning, and many for the first time were able to play and complete a From software game. Something that From Software never seemed interested in the past, they didn't want any gamer playing their games only hard-core. Come the dlc, which is more difficult, has enemies that are more aggressive, have more health, you have less time to heal and is less forgiving, even the developer says this is the case regarding difficulty. So why are youtubers surprised that a large audience who enjoyed the formular of the base game don't enjoy a different approach to the new content. It's the contradiction between the base game and the dlc that people have issues with. They just wanted more of the same. It's like enjoying a film, then going to watch the sequel, and the sequel changes things up, and people end up not enjoying it as much. I'm shocked how difficult this is to comprehend and isn't helped by some of the worst gamers out there who just say get good or it's your problem, they add little to nothing to the conversation and are just looking down on people who dare to play a From Software game, their own private domain, along with elitists like the developer.

    • @RollingStone501
      @RollingStone501 4 месяца назад +2

      @@SideQuestStoriesas someone who loves Fromsoft stories and the lore, and who has disabilities that impact gaming, I thought going into ER would be a good idea cause “open world” souls where you can go somewhere else would alleviate some of the difficulty I had with their overall game design of “git gud” mentality the fans have. I got halfway through elden ring base game and just got burnt out on how little enjoyment I got from sometimes having to grind levels to make up for my own physical shortcomings and limitations. A hard single player game like this should have difficulty options for those that want to get the overall experience, but due to time restraints or problems they can’t overcome fully by “getting gud” cause I really like the story and vibe of elden ring but I look at what the DLC bosses move sets are in videos and go “oh yeah fromsoft’s game design of pushing the hardcore fans to an ever greater degree just makes me feel I’ll just watch the games from the sidelines.” And it’s not like soulslikes don’t have accessible options- I’m playing Stellar Blade now and having an overall wonderful time because it has difficulty options to make the game as difficult as you want. I also played Rise of the Ronin and had a great time cause of said difficulty options. Difficulty options just add more accessibility and makes sure you don’t age out of being able to play them- cause I wonder how enjoyable souls games will be when the average person starts growing older and losing their reflex speed

    That eurogamer article is the exact reason I stopped playing these types of games. I have played Dark Souls 1, 2, 3, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden ring. Not once after having banged my head on a boss for hours have I ever felt satisfied. It’s always “thank god that was awful”. I always played the game for something else not the bosses. At this point I don’t have the energy to just keep playing. So I ended my Elden Ring play through after getting the moonlight great sword and am happy at that.
    Edit: I think what really did it for me was Dark Souls 3’s hidden DLC Black Dragon boss. That took me so long it completely burnt me out on the genre.

      This is the reason why I hate that the games get these insane scores. This will entice everyone to try out these games and give negative feedback over things that are pretty baked into the genre.

    To me, the whole problem with the scadutree fragments is that it *is* kind of an arbitrary increase in difficulty. You NEED to take them to have a fair fight against a lot of these new bosses, because without them they have an unreasonable amount of health and damage output

    • @Felicificity
      @Felicificity 4 месяца назад +4

      It’s arbitrary in the sense that all RPG progression systems are arbitrary. If rewarding exploration with important progression rewards that increase damage and defense is considered arbitrary, the whole core of the genre comes into question.
      Fromsoft needed to find a way to give players new forms of progression while also giving them control over their own difficulty, the way their classic level up system does. And thanks to this decision, players of all levels can tweak their own experience as they see fit, and dodge the issue of stat softcaps limiting your normal level progression.
      There is room for gentle rebalancing but the system isn’t the issue. People seem to be mostly upset that their “complete” build has to work for progression again - but why play an enormous DLC roughly the size of a whole smaller game if not to make progression and continue building your character?

    Rather than implying some secret exclusivity deal, the Microsoft quote to me reads like they are trying to defend their Series S system parity requirement. The "deals with other platforms" part is just them saying that they aren't going to talk about what other platforms require or allow, because this is about Microsoft making sure no version of the Xbox gets left behind.

The checked the credits and found most people they spoke to for their Arkane doco were on that project. Plus for one bad game out of all their games made is no excuse to shutter them since you’re losing trained talent anyway. Love your work shilly and look forward to the next news round up 😊😊

    Was I having fun with Shadow of the Erdtree? Hell fucking yeah I was! This dlc kicked my ass just as hard as From’s other dlcs and I loved every minute of it. I had some issues with some of the base game bosses but honestly thought the dlc bosses fixed almost all of those issues, it felt very fair. This is my new favorite piece of souls, content? Idk I feel like this could be considered its own game with how gargantuan it is. Once again, Fromsoft have put many AAA studios to shame and shown just how much they have mastered the Souls genre.
