I did like how you took the time to explain the important steps and the tools you used. It was an entertaining. I think if it was all too perfect - it would make us feel we couldn't do it. But when we saw the not so perfect - and how you molded it into something good - does make me feel that I could give it a go too.
Hi Stephen, what a nice comment thank you, it means a lot and has made our day as we have always said we are not professionals and we like to think that by seeing us do things others will be willing to give it a good go too! Thanks again and good luck, if we can do it anyone can!
Exellent job top marks great you think outside box and make things fit when you hit a problem you are a man after my own heart.I made wooden notice frames for outside the Everyman theatre when i was in school 1964 photo is on youtube actors photo shoot.Julie Walters, Mathew Kelly plus outside theatre. So i feel i can comment on a job well done by you.👌
Thank you for the compliment John, it’s always nice when someone who has knowledge appreciates your efforts! And wow what an achievement to have under your belt!! And it’s always nice to learn something new about our city too thank you 🙏
Thank you, that's the beauty of doing your own van build, there are so many different ideas and styles and layouts, you can make your van unique and functional to your own personal needs and wants!!!
Brilliantly explained. I'm a woodwork enthusiast and always have been but was looking for the best way to tackle this for a van. Well, now I know and have all the tools already. A big thank you👍
Thanks buddy that’s a massive compliment so thank you . It just seemed a simple way that any one could do . And to be fair . It actually looks good as well . Which shocked me
Now that my friend is the comment of the day . We just trying to be us . The non professional fools we are but just get stuff done . If we can do it any one can . Thanks for the comment bud
I do believe you could be TOTALY wrong there sir . She poped in said hi game me instructions of what to do and then left me to it . She instructed me well and he job was Done . Hope your ok mate
I kept the cardboard template that I used for marking out the bodywork to cut the window aperture out, as I've fitted similar windows to yours. That template will also be useful for marking out the frames.
and seriously how simple was it as well , something any one can do . ok u need a router but thats all really , plus it was one of them bed time ideas , i do most of my thinking when im lie in in bed lol
I am planning to do the same for my van. But I have to cope with the internal van frame around the window as well. I am leaving the frame until I know how much space I need to fill up. Between the van metalwork and the cladding.
thnkas mate . my dad was a joiner before he retired and hes fussy so i guess i just learnt off him how to do things , im no joiner but i knock a mean nail in
Man that was great! We would never try to do something like that. Cuz it would never look that good LOL. I know I've said it before, but everything you do looks so professional. It's quite impressive.
Thanks mate who knew I could have a go hey . And it’s funny you mention the mysterious bottle I was going to caption it but forgot . I’m glad some one got on to it cos it made me laugh . And yer I was actually impressed my self with the frames they turned out lovely
PS people at the end of that video I think I saw him slide that window open and the open part was the front and you slid the glass towards the back. Everything that I have read tells you to put the stationary part of the window towards the front of the van and that prevents the rain and water that gets sliced up against the vehicle from going into the crevice between the two panes of glass and potentially causing a leak😮 always keep the stationary panel to the front
You can put them in any way you like it really dosnt matter they seal . And they have never leaked . So don’t believe everything you read . Cos let’s face it they have been in for 3 years and not one leak
@@UrbanVanlife so you're telling me I should not have believed the manufacturer of the windows that I purchased and installed like they recommended? I didn't know why that's what they said until I watched a couple of videos and then I thought huh that does make sense..
@justjudy7320 well I can tell you 1000% ours have not leaked at all . So what dose that tell you . But let me know if yours leak . You also say about the manufacturer . We didn’t say who it was just where we bought them from ?? May be you got different windows that have to be installed that way cos we know plenty of people who fitted them like we have and funny enough non of there’s have leaked . It could be you have different ones
i am in the middle of a build of my first van at the moment and was wondering if to batten out the walls before adding ply.. you dont seem to do that on yours.. any reason for one method over another or just depends on personal choice ?
My thinking is your screwing Barton’s to a metal structure to then put ply up on to the battons . It makes no sense to me why people do it . I mean if any thing you lose 2 inches of width but for what reason ?? 2 inches is not much , until you need it to be 2 inches bigger
this is really well done, love this! helps so much in figuring things out. So my other question is, how are the windows installed on these vans to begin with? are they clamped inplace with a trim ring and screws or do you just bond them in place?
This is excellent! What pieces of wood did you cut your frame from? Also, what is the name of the tool you run around your cuts to make the bevel? It's pretty magical.
Looks good man, think I need a router haha. Quick question, what is the thickness of the ply that you are using on the walls, my wife and I no longer want to go with cladding and just want to go with plain white walls, just not sure on the thickness needed. Cheers
thnaks mate and yours look sound mate , i only did mine like this cos greg never just to prove i can do things and im not as dumb as he may think , but yours are boss mate the whole van looks sound bro
we got them from a company in kendle in the lake district uk called lakeside windows . there nice people and ther price was good , they also do bigger ones now as well , lakelandwindscreens.co.uk/
Hello, was just about to attempt this myself. Some sources say not to have the wood touching the window frame and to leave a small gap to prevent condensation and mould forming…..would be be interested to know hear your thoughts. Thanks, John.
We have not had any issues to be honest mate . It all looks the same as the day we did it . You’re going to get condensation regusrdless and I think by having a gap it could drip into parts you can not see so I personally wouldn’t do that .
@@UrbanVanlife yeahhh thats it as long as it does the job fella, i might do something similar with ours, or i may make a frame from 3x1 or something, get a little windowsill then haha

Super helpful! Especially the fitting the trim ring to the panel, tacking it together, removing and cutting the panel. Brilliant, thanks!
There not a hard job mate to be honest and really make a difference to the van . Thanks for watching Allen

Looking good! I’m wondering if you considered painting before installing...would that be worth it or no?
we are going to stain them mate so its just a case of being carefull
Really nice job. I suppose if you did not have a profiling tool for the shaped window, you could use a cardboard templete.
thanks buddy , and yer you could use that as a template for sure
Top work mate 🤠
I also enjoyed the short broll footage near the end.
Thanks mate . I need to spend more time recording b roll . But cheers dude
Honestly mate, I really admire how you do all this, brilliant stuff 👍👍👍👍

great idea that mate , it is just a easy effect that kind of llooks nice as well , we have just re stained ours today with a fresh new coat

What is the gray grid material you use as your workbench? Some sort of trench cover?
Lol no there actually our recovery boards for when we get stuck in the mud . But they are great for clamping things to as well . Multipurpose

Very helpful video! Looks amazing!! Curious as to what mm ply you are using for your walls?
We used 12 mm ply on our walls
Love your work, did you glue the window frame that you made to the van wall? What stops it rattling?
We screwed the frame to the ply and then fixed it all in place with screws mate . And that worked perfect for us
