Been pulling out what little hair I have left trying to figure out how to trim out my skoolie windows. I think this, along with what I've come up with for securing the trim rings, will do the trick. Thanks.
Hey! That looks awesome! Two questions though, did you glue the wood frame to the metal? We are afraid while driving the wood will rattle too much against the metal. And also don't you have a lot of dirt going in the openings between the window and the frame?
We did not glue it - The way we fastened it turns out to be very secure - we've never in more than 4 years now, heard a rattle of kind from the window. Also it's good and snug and we don't have a dirt problem either.
How did you secure the wood frame to the metal surrounding the window? I assume this needs to be secured well to avoid any chatter from the materials vibrating while driving. I don't see any screws from the frame into the sheet metal directly. Thanks for your time. they look great.
Hi Jonathan - we actually did not fasten the wood to the window frame. The window is mounted securely to the van body, and the wood frame is just held in place by the furring strips as shown in the video. And we don’t have any squeaking or chattering noise at all.
Tim, this is really well done, love this! helps so much in figuring things out. So my other question is, how are the windows installed on these vans to begin with? are they clamped inplace with a trim ring and screws or do you just bond them in place?
They are clamped in place with the inside trim ring and screws. MotionWindows has a great video on their site showing how they go together: www.motionwindows.com/sprinter-van-conversion-windows-new-gen/
I’ve been struggling with the bunk windows on our Transit. I thought about doing something similar to yours but I don’t want to trap the windows behind the framing. What if something happens to one and I need to replace it? I’m planning to attach a wall panel with magnets. Hopefully nothing will happen to them but if it does I’ll be able to pop the panel off.
Good idea to think in terms of removable panels. We are SO wishing we would have done more of our build with panels for easier access to things behind the walls and ceiling!
Ive been trying to figure out the trim for my window, this helps! Do you prime or seal any of the framing wood? If not, have you ran into issues mold on the wood?
Glad it was helpful! No we didn’t seal much of anything in the van and so far no problems. But if I were to do it again I’d make the time available to seal everything. Thanks for the comment and good luck with your build!
Hi Stuffs - The trim is attached to the furring strips that extend down from above the window and up from below. I'll illustrate this better on Part Two, coming soon.
I think it is called “1x3” because that is the dimension before the edges are planed smooth. (Kind of a silly quirk about US lumber nomenclature). The actual size more like 3/4” x 2-1/2”.
I just fixed the link. Thanks for the comment or I wouldn't have known it wasn't working - Much appreciated! Here's the link as well: ruclips.net/video/NaslUd1-pU0/видео.html

Nice job.
Thank you Dave!
Please make more videos. How did you attach the trim to the van wall? Thanks

Thanks for the inspiration, when you say 1x3 is that 1”x3” as the wood I got looks much thicker than what you framed the window with??

Woodglut comes with very useful plans with all the details you need.
Good to know - thanks John.
