      I agree. It might be a case of getting used to presenting to a camera on his own (see: every RUclipsr's really old videos) but I feel like he brings a more grounded take on things; a sort of straight man in comparison to the other two.

      He's a safe pair of hands in that he's very "Matt & Quinns-like" with his quirky humour and all that. Personally I like that equally as much as the way Kylie offered a new voice & perspective. They've all been great in their own way, really.

    I know I'm a few months late to this review, but I wanted to thank SU&SD -- and especially Tom -- for this great review. I bought this game on this review's recommendation and my friends and I have loved it. It's a great social distancing game and the game's structured approach to "be as creative as a you want!" really has reminded me of what I love about tabletop games and even what I love about tabletop role playing games. So thank you for telling me about this. It's made the past few months a little better.
    One anecdote I'll add. My friends and I really got hooked on one session we played and now we're making a mini-campaign of it, with each session acting almost like a season of television or an entry in a book series. In this case, all the unanswered plot threads that were left hanging at the end of one session are now what we look forward to seeing resolved the next time we play. The Quiet Year's focus on societies, as opposed to parties, really allows for the metaphorical camera to be pulled back. I wouldn't be surprised if, in a couple of sessions, in-game generations have passed and our initial cast of heroes and villains is wholly replaced and still dealing with the fallout from decisions made years earlier (our story is about a pack of street dogs, so "generations" don't last as long, haha). It's fun to watch, more fun to be a part of, and I can't think of a lot of games or media that even allow for it.

  • @mouseholepress
    @mouseholepress 4 года назад +7

    Really enjoyed watching this, even though The Quiet Year is already a firm favourite of mine. Like Tom, I also love it despite my reservations (“it takes too long” is a common issue). It’s a really fun way to be creative with your pals. It works great on Roll20 too - the lacklustre drawing tools make it okay to not be so good at drawing.

    After listening to the mcelboys play this game to set up the most recent Ethersea arc, I became enthralled with the system. Immediately I was thinking of how I could adapt the game to be useful for any/all of my fantasy settings, but your example mundane projects of "sort the Tupperware drawer" or "make a sourdough starter" made me realize...oh. Oh, this might be a useful framework to try to add some structure to my life (disabled and effectively still in lockdown bc of it). I can't imagine that it'll last super long, but if anything at all sticks around long enough to be helpful, that's a win in my book.

    I heard Tom mentioning it in last video and I jumped at it, playing it remotely with two friends two nights ago. In short: I really really liked it, so thanks, already a positive impact on my covid-life!!!
    Drawing together online is a bit of a mess, I must say...
    It slows things quite a lot, so we played a shorter version with fewer cards each season and it still took several hours to finish... and the winter even finished on the first card!
    Also maybe next time I will try to add the soft rule that each player speaks for the "same part of the community" more consistently as the weeks pass and the situation consolidates. We naturally ended up doing that, and it added a bit more friction. Otherwise it is a bit easy to gloss over problems and discussions end up being less influential.
    Anyway, thanks a lot!

    Based on Tom mentioning The Artifact for all of 1 second in the last vid I went and became a late backer of it on Kickstarter... it does a similar thing to The Quiet Year but very much as a 1 player thing. (PS the new SU&SD team members are wonderful!)

    I heard you give this game a quick mention in the last video. Really really glad you did a review of it. This game seems awesome! Especially if you like drawing maps :) Great first video, dude.

    Ahh what a nice video. But what really made me happy was the Extinction Rebellion poster on your wall and Ian Banks' Player of Games on your shelf. 10/10 Relatable.

    Picked this up straight after watching, so thanks for the recommendation Tom! Loved the experience. We found it works best when everyone understands that the point is to try and tell a good story and not 'win'. I ended up unintentionally taking the role of introducing conflict, while my girlfriend tried to pursue a happy ending for all. This added plenty of tension from the push/pull of our visions for the community. We played the slightly shortened version and this still took a couple of hours. It's a fantastic story generator. Perhaps even a useful tool for writers struggling for inspiration. For those who are interested, this is what our play-through created...
    We followed a civilisation of cats living in a litter box desert where only ancient stone effigies on their human gods remained. After a sprig of the precious holy catnip was discovered, the civilisation split in two along secular and nonsecular lines. The church deemed it irresponsible to propagate and distribute the herb among the general populace, keeping it for their own prophetic rituals. The general public demanded it be shared via a lottery, allowing lucky winners to experience its euphoric effects. The church was overthrown and exiled from the city. While these disputes were going on, political negotiations had been underway with the residents of a nearby dog settlement and a large band of mice came from the west, seeking refuge from a violent sand storm. As the sand storm neared the city, both the dogs and mice were forced inside the city walls, causing racial tensions to rise due to overcrowding. A dog died from a catnip overdose, rumours spread of a cat's mutilated remains being found outside the city limits, and, after it was discovered that the winter food stores had spoiled (perhaps by someone's design), the decision was made to eat the mouse refugees. It all ground to a halt when the dogs, whose machinations over the past year had been destabilising the cat community, sacked the city while its residents slept, revealing themselves to be part of a secret order known as the Frost Shepherds.

    Lovely review. Also, I was literally sitting at the dinner table shouting at the TV: "This IS relatable!" in various intonations. Not only do I think this might be our cup of tea, we were LITERALLY having tea as we were watching the review. COINCIDENCE!?!?! Probably, yeah. Keep up the good work. Also, fun to see books by Iain Banks in the background there. Nice to see another Cultured soul.

    The Quiet Year is one of my favourite games, and it's a nice surprise seeing it featured on SUSD. I highly recommend getting the physical edition, it's such a lovely thing to own, it comes in a small burlap sack, fits in a pocket, mmm
