    Fun fact: F-104 pilots gave their aircraft many fun names, including: “missile with a man in it”, “widow maker”, and “bullet and blades”, to name a few. It’s wings were so sharp that when it was on the ground it had to have special covers over them so that ground crew members didn’t hurt themselves (hence the bullets and blades name).

      @paulmakinson1965 2 года назад

      It had a pretty bad record with the Luftwaffe. The boundary layer control system that lowers the stall speed for landing would malfunction in the most awkward moments, like on short final. That, coupled with a downward ejection seat was lethal. Not to mention the German humidity (it certainly rains more than at Edwards airbase) would do quite a number on the electronics. Pile onto that, so much wing loading that it just can't turn with all the weight the Germans added to it to turn it into a multirole fighter.

    RE: The F-104...Only the earliest jets had the downward-ejecting seats, because the seats of the time couldn't clear the tail at high speeds. That was quickly corrected. Yeager's flight was in an NF-104, a special jet with a rocket above the jet; intended for high altitude research.

    The F-104 sequence was a recreation of Yeager's December, 1963 attempt to set a record for ground level to maximum altitude. The NF-104A he was flying was modified with a Rocketdyne liquid fuel motor attached for extra boost, once the aircraft reached high altitude where the jet engine was not getting enough air to remain running. The pilot would manually cut off the jet engine at a predetermined point in the flight profile. Once at altitude where the control surfaces lost effect, an RCS system installed in the wingtips and nose gave the pilot a measure of control through the ballistic arc. Yeager was unable to maintain the plane within the flight envelope and was forced to eject. The injury to his face was from burning material from his ejection seat motor. Luckily, the blood caked on his face protected his eye from the heat and prevented its loss. The flight was not an unscheduled jaunt as depicted in the movie, but a preplanned profile.

      Good comment I remember reading about this in Aviation Week, and or Yeager his autobiography. Not too many people including aviation geeks, know about the NF-104 program. I was always a little disappointed they couldn't show the little rocket engine under the rudder but above the jet exhaust nacelle looked so cool.

Our mission is making great coffee and supporting veteran and first responder organizations, which we've put over a million dollars this year towards. There's a lot of misinformation and misrepresented information about one person's own actions, and that's not something we're going to dwell on and rehash every day. We appreciate the support, and can understand why some people want us to take a purist stance, but it's not what we're here to do.

    Funny story, my father's callsign was Maverick. Got it after a maverick didn't eject off the weapon pylon on his F4 properly and so it tore off and ended up with the warhead sticking up in the cockpit. This was right after he had gotten to his first squadron so his callsign was born that day. Fast forward a few years and Top Gun comes out. Considering he was in the Air Force and at the time was an instructor at Fighter Weapons School at Nellis his callsign was immediately changed and Irish was born. Fast forward a few years and we are at Osan AFB and he's the OPS Group commander. Tom Cruise shows up promoting Interview with a Vampire and if I remember correctly Planet Hollywood opening in Seoul. I get a chance to meet him and being the snot nosed kid I was I walked right up to him and said "You forced my father to change his callsign because of that stupid movie that made people think the Navy could actually fly." He was actually a cool guy about it. One of the guys from my Dad's F16 squadron at Osan was the one who took him up that he's talked about on Top Gear and other places. He bought the squadron a movie theater popcorn maker and to the best of my knowledge to this day is still having popcorn, butter, oil, salt, etc sent over 4 times a year. This concludes boring story that random people on the internet care nothing about lol.

      Not boring...I cruise the youtube comments to pick up cool tidbits of info and stories. Thanks for sharing. My Tom Cruise story...I didn't get to talk with him, but pretty close. He was racing in about 1992 after Days of Thunder with the Newman Sharpe team at Pocono Raceway. He crashed his car so we went down near the pits to get closer. We were about 20ft from him while he was chewing someone out. My first thought was, he's a lot shorter in person.

      @@skimask5049 I did briefly look I to it about the kenosha shooter's the affiliation with black rifle. As to my knowledge there is no evidence pointing to them supporting to take guns away from people. In my opinion it seems they didnt want to make a profit or seem like they were about making money off of the the incident involving Kyle wearing their brand t shirt.
      Also walmart is far left and i still shop there.
      Black rifle has damn good coffee and i see no unethical actions on their part. So they will get my business. Unlike some veteran companies like WWP with corrupt leadership

    Pearl Harbor. Because "Knox" class frigates were around at the time. Their SM-2 launchers would have come in handy with the "Zeros" that's for sure.

    At 12:26, the German Luftwaffe were still being trained in F-104s out of Luke AFB when they filmed this movie, I think that was almost about the time they stopped doing that. But this is one of those training aircraft

    I read somewhere that some South African Airforce pilots made a (unsanctioned!) bombing run on a US carrier before the first Desert Storm. Apparently the US Navy decided to fare through South African waters and the pilots didn't want to let them cross unharrased. This was just as South Africa started to get out of the apartheid era, so we had an uneasy relationship - and the pilots had their pride to take care of. So this bunch took a DC-3 (which were still pretty much in general service in the sanctioned SAAF) and diverted their path from "general patrol" to "torpedo the US Navy". They probably saw the carrier group by chance when they decided to make a bombing run on the carrier, then high tail it back to base. So they did exactly that, but they weren't too far from the carrier group when they noticed two F-14's flying beside the old Dakota, their brakes fully opened and landing gear down as they tried to slow themselves enough to stay in formation! When they got back to base they had received a message from the USN thanking them for the vintage aircraft fly-by!
