    I liked the Howard Sprague character. His role had the proper writing and he was well suited for the part. Poor Warren replacing Barney, not so much. Warren was in a no-win situation

    I think Warren had the impossible job of replacing Barney as deputy. No one could do that. Whereas, Howard Sprague was just another one of those quirky, lovable Mayberry residents who was useful in creating situations and adding to storylines. He was even elevated to have his own storyline in a few episodes. S8E12 Howard and Millie comes to mind. I liked Howard even though he was boring. Another good episode Bob.

      Howard was almost super human. He wasn't a huge fisherman but he caught Old Sam. He never really bowled but got a 300 game. He even fixed a church dispute when the ladies wanted choir robes but the men wanted to fix the foundational problems in the church. He runs for town council. Bam, he won.

    I remember my dad always saying the color episodes of the Andy Griffith weren't as good as the black and white ones. I think that was mainly because the color episodes didn't have Barney except for a couple of guest appearances.

      during the first season they discovered barney was the lead focal point, not andy, so they made barney the funny guy actor, and andy basically read his scripts. the show was definitely barney fife.

    • @stephaniechaffin1154
      @stephaniechaffin1154 23 дня назад +3

      The color episodes weren't as good. Barney not being there hurt but the biggest reason is the show shifted away from Andy to Howard who was just a boring character and Goober and Floyd who were almost too simple to exists. To me if the black and white shows didn't exist the show would not be talked about.

    • @-BUFFALOMan
      @-BUFFALOMan 23 дня назад +3

      @@stephaniechaffin1154 seems the big mistake was losing don knotts by paying only him measly union actor scale for all 5 seasons, after that andy griffith just milked the show as long as he could. he foolishly lost his stars ie barney. anything else is speculative lol

    • @stephaniechaffin1154
      @stephaniechaffin1154 23 дня назад +1

      @@-BUFFALOMan I agree. They took advantage of Don for sure but even if he would have stayed the writers were all new and the quality just wasn't as good. Maybe him staying would have changed it but we will never know.

    seems the moment andy lost barney and mayberry's future, was the same moment don knotts emerged as a star earning, and star salary and recognition. andy griffith kept all the limelight and money for himself on his show, and it wasnt until don became big screen star where anybody realized that don's star talent and charisma was actually what made the andy griffith show... andy griffith drifted away into nowhere exactly the moment don knotts went huge

    RFD was a horrible show. I don't think I ever sat through five complete episodes of it. As far as Howard Sprague goes, he was a good peripheral character but could never have helped down a prominent spot on a series. Warren was just annoying. Essentially, The Andy Griffith Show died with the departure of Barney, who I will always remember, (as the first couple of episodes revealed), as Andy´s bungling cousin.

    My guesss is when portraying a character, the producers allow great flexibility in how given actor will present them, provided it remains consistent

    Actually if you look at how they developed the character of Howard in TAGS he’s a pretty interesting character and Dodson especially gave him even more depth. He’s pretty much destroyed in RFD, along with most everything, by dragging out a comedy bit with endless bickering between he and Goober and Emmett. Wow that wasn’t even funny to begin with, let alone perpetuated throughout the series. It got to be like watching three elderly dudes in a nursing home constantly carping about everything. But on TAGS I think Howard is ok and interesting and I believe Andy himself was a big fan and friend of Dodson.
    I’m also a Warren fan and would have loved it if he was cast in the Howard part. It would have alleviated the surface dullness of Howard and made for some funny scenes having such a goofball like Warren be the County Clerk.

    Howard Sprague- the definitive nerd, wearing those dumb black & white oxfords and belted sport coat. That “bash” he threw in his redone bachelor pad was the icing on the cake. The writers really nailed the epitome of a nerd, trying hopelessly to be ‘with it’ . 😆

    I liked Howard and Emmitt. I thought they worked very well with Goober and the rest of the cast. They kept the small town flavor intact. And besides that just compare them with today's sit coms. No they weren't the AGS but they were genuinely funny and brought new characters to the town of Mayberry. After all doesn't everything change eventually.

    Howard wasn't the most exciting character. Who else thinks insurance agent Ed Jenkins, Jack Dodson's previous character, might have done better? Things improved when Howard's mom remarried and moved away. It was sad that Millie left him for Sam Jones on Mayberry RFD. One of the few acknowledgments of the color years in the reunion movie was having Howard back. He even got a scene with Barney. I still think the show suffered after Aaron Ruben moved over to Gomer Pyle USMC.
