Once Barney left. It was over.
Howard and Warren had big shoes to fill. When Don left, it changed the series.
Huge
I liked the Howard Sprague character. His role had the proper writing and he was well suited for the part. Poor Warren replacing Barney, not so much. Warren was in a no-win situation
I think Warren had the impossible job of replacing Barney as deputy. No one could do that. Whereas, Howard Sprague was just another one of those quirky, lovable Mayberry residents who was useful in creating situations and adding to storylines. He was even elevated to have his own storyline in a few episodes. S8E12 Howard and Millie comes to mind. I liked Howard even though he was boring. Another good episode Bob.
Howard was almost super human. He wasn't a huge fisherman but he caught Old Sam. He never really bowled but got a 300 game. He even fixed a church dispute when the ladies wanted choir robes but the men wanted to fix the foundational problems in the church. He runs for town council. Bam, he won.
❤❤❤😮😮😮😊😊😊
I remember my dad always saying the color episodes of the Andy Griffith weren't as good as the black and white ones. I think that was mainly because the color episodes didn't have Barney except for a couple of guest appearances.
during the first season they discovered barney was the lead focal point, not andy, so they made barney the funny guy actor, and andy basically read his scripts. the show was definitely barney fife.
The color episodes weren't as good. Barney not being there hurt but the biggest reason is the show shifted away from Andy to Howard who was just a boring character and Goober and Floyd who were almost too simple to exists. To me if the black and white shows didn't exist the show would not be talked about.
@@stephaniechaffin1154 seems the big mistake was losing don knotts by paying only him measly union actor scale for all 5 seasons, after that andy griffith just milked the show as long as he could. he foolishly lost his stars ie barney. anything else is speculative lol
@@-BUFFALOMan I agree. They took advantage of Don for sure but even if he would have stayed the writers were all new and the quality just wasn't as good. Maybe him staying would have changed it but we will never know.
Andy did a lot more than just read the scripts
after barney there was Emmitt fix it shop where barber shop was.
Emmett was as annoying as Howard Sprague in a different way. They sure goofed when they replaced Barney and Floyd. I know Floyd was ill, etc., but still, those replacements characters were duds.
Thank you Bob, for these vids on the ANDY GRIFFITH show! Im 61 and grew up watching Andy and all the other classic tv shows! Nice memories!
Jack Dodson also appeared with Andy Griffith in Andy’s movie, “Angel in My Pocket”. He subsequently guest-starred on “Room 222”, and on “Happy Days” as Ralph’s Father.
Jack Dodson played Howard Sprague very well I liked the character mayberry RFD was a good show it was on catchy comedy good video bob
I knew a guy exactly like Howard Sprague. The odd thing, during the war he was a Marine Corps MP. How opposite could you get!
I felt sorry for the Man who played Warren. He in NO WAY was as Good and Funny as Barney and I’m sure he heard that over and over.
I liked Mayberry RFD...Granted it was the Andy Griffith Show by any stretch of the imagination. I enjoyed it.
Hi Bob and everyone God Bless Much Love Jean
seems the moment andy lost barney and mayberry's future, was the same moment don knotts emerged as a star earning, and star salary and recognition. andy griffith kept all the limelight and money for himself on his show, and it wasnt until don became big screen star where anybody realized that don's star talent and charisma was actually what made the andy griffith show... andy griffith drifted away into nowhere exactly the moment don knotts went huge
Howard the Bowler and Dinner at 8 were good ones.
Could you do a video on Elmo? I remember he was arrested by Goober.
I liked the Howard character. The bowling episode was especially good.
Good video, Bob. I never was much of a fan of the color AGS, and I don’t think I ever got through a single episode of RFD. I absolutely HATED it. The black and whites? I can quote almost every line word for word.
RFD was a horrible show. I don't think I ever sat through five complete episodes of it. As far as Howard Sprague goes, he was a good peripheral character but could never have helped down a prominent spot on a series. Warren was just annoying. Essentially, The Andy Griffith Show died with the departure of Barney, who I will always remember, (as the first couple of episodes revealed), as Andy´s bungling cousin.
Mayberry RFD was a completely different show . It wasn't the AGS at all in my mind. Not my favorite but it was still a good wholesome show in its own way.
My guesss is when portraying a character, the producers allow great flexibility in how given actor will present them, provided it remains consistent
Jack dodson "toned down" Howard sprague,
Howard morris animated Ernest t
Can't replace Barney Fite.
In "Howard's new life", where was the beach scene filmed
Thus was pre green screen/cgi and its not mentioned in the credits 😑
Actually if you look at how they developed the character of Howard in TAGS he’s a pretty interesting character and Dodson especially gave him even more depth. He’s pretty much destroyed in RFD, along with most everything, by dragging out a comedy bit with endless bickering between he and Goober and Emmett. Wow that wasn’t even funny to begin with, let alone perpetuated throughout the series. It got to be like watching three elderly dudes in a nursing home constantly carping about everything. But on TAGS I think Howard is ok and interesting and I believe Andy himself was a big fan and friend of Dodson.
I’m also a Warren fan and would have loved it if he was cast in the Howard part. It would have alleviated the surface dullness of Howard and made for some funny scenes having such a goofball like Warren be the County Clerk.
biggest mistake in andy griffith's life was not making don knotts a partner
Howard was one of my favorite characters. And I enjoyed the show as it evolved. With characters in the town coming and going, that made it more like real life.
Was it a coincidence that Jack accepted the role of Harold in the 72 release of The Getaway knowing [Harold Clinton] looking exactly like Howard Sprague, Commits suicide by hanging himself in a restroom shower. His body is only shown afterwards.
Jack Dodson was talented. He played Howard Sprague good. He was different on TAGS but he fit in. Thank you. Praying for you 🙏 Melanie
The only movie i saw Dodson in was The Getaway
Howard Sprague- the definitive nerd, wearing those dumb black & white oxfords and belted sport coat. That “bash” he threw in his redone bachelor pad was the icing on the cake. The writers really nailed the epitome of a nerd, trying hopelessly to be ‘with it’ . 😆
Good commentary today, Brother Bob!
Howard's mother was played by the sister of Jack Albertson'.
I read somewhere that she was the mother in law of Cloris Leachman. I loved her on Bewitched, as Darrin’s mother.
I liked Howard and Emmitt. I thought they worked very well with Goober and the rest of the cast. They kept the small town flavor intact. And besides that just compare them with today's sit coms. No they weren't the AGS but they were genuinely funny and brought new characters to the town of Mayberry. After all doesn't everything change eventually.
❤
I think the main 3 reasons why RFD was so dreadful is that the main characters were gone, the writers lost their magic & they were also in Color.
Guy who portrayed Warren - Jack Burns - was the comedy partner of Avery Schreiber (Cheese that goes CRUNCH!) and wrote for the Muppet Show and Muppen movies.
He also wrote for and appeared on Hee Haw, sometimes with George Lindsey.
He actually wrote a lot for heehaw..was also head writer for the show "fridays"
some shows do well after losing some actors , some dont, mash continued to do well after actors left and were replaced. Andy griffith just didnt. Losing don knotts the show lost its comedy and chemistry don and andy had.
I quit watching “Mash” when Trapper John left. Couldnt hack the new guy- Mike Farrell.
IT WENT FOR THE BEST TO THE WORST
Thanks Bob. Two of my favorites from Howard are. One where he goes to an island and the second where he is black ⚫️ from joining the lodge.
He was supporting cast like Elmo and the fix it guy. Do they still exist?
I haven't watched the color episodes much, so I don't really know what to think. I like the actor on Happy Days better.
Barney made the show. Period
Howard wasn't the most exciting character. Who else thinks insurance agent Ed Jenkins, Jack Dodson's previous character, might have done better? Things improved when Howard's mom remarried and moved away. It was sad that Millie left him for Sam Jones on Mayberry RFD. One of the few acknowledgments of the color years in the reunion movie was having Howard back. He even got a scene with Barney. I still think the show suffered after Aaron Ruben moved over to Gomer Pyle USMC.
the last 3 years were just a little too polished and the characters were not as quirky
there were some worthwhile episodes in there though. i think it's written off to easily because of comparisome
I liked the Howard character. Didn't care for Mayberry RFD.
Howard was a rather dull character 😴 🙄 I guess that's where the humor came from. Totally different from the first 5 seasons. They could have given him a parking spot in the back of the parking lot 🙄 😒 😆 🤣
Howard Sprague was a terrible character.
It's not just you, in fact I've never met a person that liked Mayberry RFD or hardly any episodes that were in color.
We can't figure out how a show goes from being so good to being so bad. What happened to the writers after the show went to color!!!!!!
🤓😎✌🏼
I agree, the character wasn’t one that added much to the show. Good actor, but not great role.
You would be boring to if you lived in Mayberry
I pretty much do. A town population 1200. Trust me, I'm not boring😉
Small towns can be definitively UNBORING. They are unique and full of character.
Warren was a stupid character. I liked Howard a whole lot better. I'm glad they got rid of Warren very quick. He was so obnoxious with his "huh, huh, huh" crappy dialogue!! Howard was a good addition to the show, l thought!! His Mother was Darrin Stevens Mother, also. She was a pill, l thought!!!! She got old real quick, also, with her "headaches" talk!!
( on both shows. )
I found Howard Sprague to be dull and boring.
