Because Andy was Batman, and Barney was Robin.
Not surprising. Don was the star of the show.
Don's (Barney) character was the funniest, but he couldn't be the protagonist. Griffith's character evolved into sort of a ringmaster at a circus, surrounded by a succession of wild bizarre characters, but he himself couldn't be one for the show to work dramatically.
This was such a good story, I admire there friendship they had. What Loyalty looks like.

Don was tired of being the co star. Don hit it off with movies, one after another. Mr. Limpett was another winner. When Don passed on, it hurt a good bit.

Some jealousy is understandable. That's probably part of the business. Thankfully they didn't let it affect their friendship. Who else would have liked to been on one of those outings? Those nearby might have been tempted to eavesdrop.
