@johnnyyuma4194 , yes, basic math says you are correct...however there are these tricky things that are contained within a year called months and within these months are days, are you following? So if he had lived past October (his birth month) he would have in fact been 51. But because of those pesky months I was talking about, the year is split into 12 of them. So he died in June not quite making it 51 times around the sun.. so it was 50 years and some days. If you want basic he lived within 51 years but didn't makenit 51 times around the sun.
Frank Sutton's role as Sgt. Carter absolutely made that show.

My Dad loved watching Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. He always cracked up laughing when Sgt. Carter was yelling at Pfc. Pyle.

I was thirteen when it premièred in 1964. Of course we had already been seeing Gomer on the Andy Griffith Show, so naturally we were going to tune in. Sgt Carter was a great character for Frank Sutton and you are right, he died way to young. Thanks!

I liked the episode when Opie ran away from home and arrived at Gomer's base. When Andy came for him ,Sgt.

Jim Nabors was a very loyal friend to Sutton , even hiring him for his variety show. At the end of the first season, CBS wanted to let Sutton go but Nabors refused to let them do it. So the show was cancelled soon afterward

I was stationed at Ft. Campbell from ‘77-‘81, and lived in Clarksville. Greenwood cemetery was only 3-400 yards from our home. Visited there often (fascinating Civil War cemetery), but never knew he was buried there.
Why do you say these guys have a sad life he keep himself busy but died young but l know lots of people who died younger than that he served in the military with honor and seem to always rember where he came from had a nice statue ma

I always thought my Dad and Sgt. Cater could have been brothers when I was a kid. My Dad was a 30 year USAF Pilot and Officer. He was left handed like Sgt. Carter. On TV Sgt Cater had a somewhat volatile reaction when things would get out of hand and so did my Dad🤣 My older brothers laughed when I told them about my "brothers theory" but they promisded me I would not tell our Dad. Years later after Dad have retired from active service and was way more mellow, I did tell him and he laughed. The funny part was Sgt. Caters girlfriend in the show was named Bunny and THAT was my Mom's nickname for Bernice because she was born the day before Easter! Appreciated this wonderful story! Cheers👋

As a Black kid in the 'hood, we watched a variety of tv shows. Gomer Pyle was a favorite. As the show progressed and went from black and white to color it became even funnier. My father was a Marine during the Korean war and was a P.O.W. As a child playing with toy army men, jeeps,trucks and tanks I never new the seriousness of war and was oblivious to the social and political climate of the times. Be that as it was, I watched the reruns of the show when I became a teenager and appreciated its humor even more. I was just 15 when Frank Sutton passed and was sad for a while when I heard about it. Jim was a talented vocalist and musician and Frank was gifted in drama and comedy roles. Frank's facial expressions and body language at Pyle's bumblings would kill me at times!🤣🤣 and were pure genius. More often than not however, Pyle would come through for Vince in the end. He was genuinely fond of Vince, respected him, and was dedicated to him. Man I love those guys! They were funny as heck! Now that they both transcended, may the Lord embrace their spirits.👍❤️🙏🙏
I was your age when he passed away also, and sometimes I sit down and have to get my fix of the old school humor, All in the Family, Sanford and Son, even go further back to Beverly Hillbillies, Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy,Three Stooges etc.... it's a shame kids of nowadays don't know who these comedians are!! like you we played with combat toys, rifles helmets grenades and such. My dad was in the army and sent off to Guadalcanal but didn't suffer like your dad , both were heroes no doubt, and may the Lord embrace their spirits.

Gomer Pyle always reminds me of the comic strip Beetle Bailey, with Gomer as Beetle (but minus the covered up eyes), and Sgt. Carter as Sgt. Snorkel.
I remembered him in Love American Style. When I was small we used to watch Gomer Pyle USMC. It's so sad he died so young!
I have watched him play a lot of different character roles in shows from the late 1950's and 1960's. He was always good at whatever part he played! Yes, it is indeed sad that he had to pass so early!
I find it so ironic that he plays a Marine gunnery sergeant when he was rejected in real life life from joining the Marines.

Sutton could have played many roles in the 70's and 80's if he had a longer life. I can see him playing Mel on Alice very similar to Vic Tayback .
I remember Frank in the Twilight Zone. I loved Gomer Pyle and Sgt Carter was a huge part of that show. It is sad that Frank died so young at 50.

Gomer Pyle was not a goof off. He worked harder than the rest of his platoon. He was just not too bright and wasnt really cut out to be a Marine. If he were truly a goof off Carter would not have been so patient with him.
Another nice tribute Steve. I read or saw an interview with him when he talked about the generosity of Jim Nabors, it was really touching. Why did he die so young! I wonder if he drank or smoked?

This Video is GOLD. I actually met Jim Nabors back in 1995 & 97 when he was performing in concert. I first started watching GOMER PYLE USMC in the early 90's which is when I first Learned about the show. I Love GOMER PYLE USMC because of Nabors & Sutton & it is beyond Sad , passing away at only 50 years old.

I saw Sutton in a five of episodes of "Love American Style" after Gomer Pyle ended. "Gomer Pyle" wasn't cancelled, Jim Nabors decided not to come back after his original 5 year contract expired. He was given his own variety show on NBC called the "Jim Nabors Hour", where Sutton and his other Gomer co-star Ronnie Schell were frequent guest. Unfortunately, it was cancelled after one year.
I never knew that Frank Sutton was color blind. When he died, Gordon Lightfoot was enjoying his only #1 song, with Sundown, which is the title track from the album, which was the #1 LP on the pop charts, and also his only #1 album.
I had heard one time that during the span of the Jim Neighbors Show, that the network wanted Frank Sutton off the show. I guess they felt he had worn out his welcome. However, Jim was so loyal to him as a friend, that he refused and risked having the show taken off the air because of it.

I was born in 1967 so I didn't watch it in first runs but as a kid in the 70s I saw it in reruns. Love that show it's so funny. It's great he was a Sgt in the Army which gave him valuable real life experience to play Sgt. Carter in Gomer Pyle USMC.

My dad was his age 51 and died of a heart attack and was in the army in World War Two but went and fought the Germans. I really liked Sergant Carter. Wish they hadn’t ended that show or at least made a few more episodes
I remember him in Combat and Gunsmoke and others where he played a not too bright character or a heavy actor. Very versatile

Yes, I remember the Hurrican Movie about Hurrican Camille and the destruction of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and he played the part of a man who stayed instead of evacuating. He also played a part on Dragnet after Gomer Pyle. He and his wife in the episode got into an argument over him making a Brandied Fruit Cake for Christmas.
I remember the Hurricane movie. He played a guy who was having a hurricane party in his apartment and ignoring the warnings to evacuate. It was broadcast in '74 so it was probably his last movie.
Lost too soon. Watching his various film and television appearances you realize what a versatile actor he was. I can think of several roles in television and film that he would have been perfect for. However, we will always have what he gave us, and the antics of Pyle and Carter have brought so much joy to the lives of myself and countless others.
The other day I saw Bunny (Sgt Carter's girlfriend) on Three's Company. They were fun together on Gomer. RIP, Frank.

My favorite quirk about him on GP was when he would say "Huh?" whenever someone would tell him something or ask him something that took him by surprise.
I remembered when I was was a little girl there was a book titled "Too Young To Die". I think Frank Sutton along with so many others that died decades before their time were mentioned in that book 😢😢😢😢😢. R.I.P.😢😢😢😢
The movie that you remember was called "Hurricane". Also in the movie was Larry Hagman, Will Geer, Michael Learned just to name a few. The hurricane footage used in the movie is from Hurricane Carmen in August, 1969.

I do remember watching some episodes as a small boy when it originally aired, especially the one where they captured a submarine! Also remember reading about his untimely passing in the local paper.
Somehow I like the term “untimely demise.” Fortunately his work lives on still today. Being 60 myself it’s sad to learn of talented folks passing way too soon.

He will always be Sgt Carter and that role was perfect for Frank Sutton. Gomer Pyle was one of my favorite shows a show that went against the grain when the Vietnam War was taking place. Vietnam was never the topic on the Gomer Pyle show, but Hippies were the topic when a marine bus 🚌 had been painted Psychedelic 😵💫.

Brings back fond memories of watching ‘Gomer’s Pyles USMC’ while I was in Middle School. Frank Sutton and Jim Nabors played so well off of each other in the show. Sorry Frank died so young. He was a talented actor and from what I read about him seemed like a genuinely nice man.

I've seen his NAKED CITY & TZ appearances. I remember hearing about his death on the radio back in 1974, but I didn't remember when. 11 years later I heard on the radio driving home from work that it was the 11th anniversary of his death. My favorite GOMER PYLE episode (at least of those I've seen) is S3's "Gomer, the Welsh Rarebit Fiend", where that dish causes personality changes for both Gomer & Carter.
I must visit that statue & snap a selfie with it. This is a tidbit of which I was unaware.
As for Gomer, the conventional wisdom of the day has me thinking Pvt. Pile rarely made it home from work, “smelling like a rose”… thanks for the cool episodes…..
@TheLifeandSadEnding The TV movie you are thinking of was titled, appropriately, "Hurricane," which aired in September of 1974 as an "ABC Movie of The Week." It was Sutton's final role.
