I don't think you guys understand, this is incredible. He's returning to his roots, and not selling out or going harder on the whole twitch streamer thing, or starting some new brand deal on an obscure platform or some shit like other streamers do. He's slowing down streaming, and returning to the original reason many of us loved him so much, while chasing a few of his own dreams in the process.

People always go on about wishing the best for streamers and always asking them to prioritize their health and what they want to do but when one actually does they can't handle it like the chat here, honestly when I heard the news I thought it'd be worse but sounds like he's just gonna do content whenever he wants rather than constantly doing it to meet a quota which sounds great. He's not going anywhere, we're not getting rid of this germ so easily.
i honestly am not even a bit sad about this. it will just be jerma doing whatever he wants on streams and youtube, with less pressure to consistently "perform" while working what seemingly pretty much matches his dream job from what he has talked about before. seems like great for him and not that much worse for fans either.

It feels like a build-up towards a full retirement, and this announcement is the first step. Jerma definitely deserves the rest he needs though and he has already been in the industry for so long. Tbf I think a good bit of those people are joking, "he hates us" "hes turning 90" "funeral stream soon" have always been running jokes. But also I think the way he's phrasing it is a bit, incorrect? I think the word retirement or soft retirement is a bit too strong for what he's actually doing. Hes still making content, just not his usual streaming content. Its probably gonna be a long time before he goes away for good.

jokes aside i was fully expecting a bit where he sets up this whole "retirement" shtick and like oh guys yknow im getting old already we knew i couldnt keep an online presence until i was like fucking 80 and while he's talking he puts up a mock charles martinet poster and the chat immediately goes from sad peepos and crying emojis to oh he got us he got us good +2 +2
It's funny, like 6-7 years ago he semi-retired the original Jerma985 channel to stream, and now he's going to focus on the Jerma985 channel. Jerma's streamed _at least_ once a week or so for a decade, which I'd imagine gets pretty stressful after a while, and now he's got a stable (and probably pretty good) source of income that isn't a bunch of weird chat members. I hope Sus Guy gets to spend the rest of his career just having fun and doing what he likes doing.
A few thoughts:
- It feels a bit wrong to use the word "retirement" at all here, even in the phrase "soft retirement", because it's so far away from what retirement usually is. It evokes a feeling of finality that just isn't going to be happening here, as Jerma has made it clear that he will have *some* online presence for the foreseeable future. Jerma's age is a long-running joke in the community, but really he's a very young guy who is a good 20-30 years (give or take) from a 'normal' retirement age, which is part of why this feels so off-putting. If anything, maybe this should be rebranded as a switch over to a non-professional management of the channel since it won't be a primary income source anymore.
- This wasn't mentioned in the video, but in the post-stream chat, Jerma indicated that there is a real, likely possibility that he may stop streaming indefinitely after a few years from now. This gives me conflicting feelings because it seemed like he genuinely enjoys streaming... and unlike other forms of work that one might enjoy, it doesn't seem like the sort of thing he'd ever have to stop doing outright (no major health, cost, or career conflicts if done on rare occasion). I can't help but wonder whether he truly enjoys doing the lower-energy "chill" streams, or if it's only the higher production acts that fulfill him in a meaningful way. I sincerely hope it's not the latter, because I would absolutely hate to find out that he has spent the last few years streaming as a means to an end rather than as a genuine passion of his, even with the understanding that it is a job and has been for quite a while. Whatever the case may be, I just hope that he will be honest with himself and the community, and not feel the need to keep streaming for the next few years for our sake if it's no longer a real passion of his.
- On a brighter note, I'm incredibly excited to see where this next era of Jerma leads to! He has always had such a talent with video making, his older RUclips videos still really hold up to this day and are some of the best on the platform, so I can't wait to see what comes next. Honestly, the lower-budget "special" videos on the old channel such as Dork Cube, The Photos Are In, Castle Griffinsteed, and the original Jerma Rumbles all rival some of his larger Twitch productions in my mind. As entertaining as the Dollhouse, Baseball, and Carnival streams were, I don't feel myself itching to rewatch those the same way I do with the YT videos, and a huge part of that is the format difference between the platforms, with video production making it possible to highly edit and perfect aspects that you never quite could with a livestream. So no matter what content he decides to make, I know I'll be in for a good time!

He's always been this great, I'm glad people are finding their way. There is an excitement level to a jerma-made youtube video, but I was hoping he'd keep streaming. It'll be fine.

Honestly, I don't think Jerma sees himself as a "let's player" in the youtube sphere.
If he wants to concentrate on youtube, it's because he has content he things he can create and release easier on that platform than via twitch, which won't be crazy stuff like the baseball stream, but I don't think it'll be just him playing videogames either. It'll be good content regardless.

as sad as it is, what matters is that he's happy. i don't care what he does, he could disappear forever, so long as he's happy. outside of a weird parasocial way, i just want people to be happy with what they're doing, and if youtube or retirement entirely is what brings him joy, then that's what he should do. what he's done over the years is more than enough, and one day it'll end, and that will be okay.

I'm not a mega Jerma fan or anything, but I watch him from time to time (usually condensed versions of his playthroughs on RUclips). And honestly, I think whatever he's going to be working on going forward will be even better than what he's done in the past. He's shown himself to be an extremely creative person and by working like this, he'll be able to pour all of that into whatever the hell he wants to, rather than needing to work it in around an existing schedule.
Shift away from Twitch and back to RUclips feels like a "this isnt as much fun as it used to be, imma go back to the old thing and hopefully that'll rekindle my enthusiasm". I totally get tha mentality because ive had similar experiences with hobbies and projects ive been involved in, but " going back" rarely rekindles the flame like I ever hoped it would. More often than not it makes me realize ther *is no going back* to how things used to be, and thats OK. We all change as does what we love and enjoy.
The past few years its felt like Jerma has been increasingly looking for reasons to keep being a public facing "content creator" and has been finding fewer and fewer reasons to stay as one. TBH i would not be shocked if he had a formal retirement from public stuff in a few years time. We'll all miss him, but more than anything I just hope Jerma can keep whatever loves and passions he has going strong in his private life ❤

Don't get me wrong, Jerma's streams are bodies of work themselves but seeing him dedicated to writing cohesive standalone pieces of work will be fun. Jerma loves writing, creating, and conceptualizing, this will be him in his most comfortable and happy environment. (I definitely went too deep here, sorry)
