You can say what you want about gen 7, but i love it just as much as the others (mayne even more). I love that they tried to do something different with kahuna's, trials, totem pokemon, z-crystals, ultra beasts and regional forms. I love gen 7 and i will die on that hill to defend it
FRRR my second favorite gen. Everything about Gen 7 still feels fresh today. The Gen 7 games were so CLOSE to being the best games in the series, but the lack of postgame content/areas, the huge amounts of unskippable cutscenes, and rushed content kind of watered the games down. USUM was wasted potential as well and was lazy.
If trial captains are counted as gym leaders, Nanu is basically the first Dark type gym leader. And it's likely for him to become a real one because you can see that there are lots of empty spaces around Alola, likely used to build gyms as there is a league now.
4 trial captains, 4 kahunas.. It matchs the number of gym leaders so they are same as agym leaders as you said. I think there will be a gym and they will be the gym leaders of alora. maybe in sequel or something

Kahunas are Elite 4 tier so we still dont have a Dark Gym
Nanu declined Kukui's offer of making him Elite Four thats why Acerola is a stand-in for him
